When Winnie Wong first saw Dafen Oil Painting Village in 2006, it was nothing like she'd imagined. The Chinese village was known for mass producing copies of Western art. She'd read about it in The New York Times, which described a kind of compound where thousands of artists painted replicas of famous artworks, like da Vinci's Mona Lisa or van Gogh's Starry Night, for European and U.S. hotels and condos.“We had an expectation, which was that there would be this giant factory,” said Wong, a professor of rhetoric at UC Berkeley. “And in this factory, there would be these painters working in an assembly line fashion: One person would paint the rocks, and one person would paint the trees, and one person would paint the sky.”But when she arrived in the small gated village, what she saw surprised her. In 2013, she published van Gogh on Demand: China and the Readymade, a book about her six years of research in Dafen and how it forever changed the way she thinks about art and authenticity and the nature of creativity.See more artwork and photos of Dafen from 2015, when Wong and architecture professor Margaret Crawford took a group of graduate students on a 14-day trip to the Pearl River Delta region to study urban art villages.Listen to the episode, read the transcript and see more photos on UC Berkeley News (news.berkeley.edu/podcasts).Music by Blue Dot Sessions.Photo by José Joaquin Figueroa. This year on Berkeley Voices, we're exploring the theme of transformation. THE ROADS NOT TAKEN—Much of travel media comes with a kind of sheen to it. A gloss. Whether you are traveling Italy with a hungry celebrity or cruising Alaska in the pages of a magazine, the photos are big and Photoshopped, the text kind of breathless. And while Afar has plenty of both, it just feels a bit different. It is not a magazine that puts a focus on consumption but on feeling. On the experience of travel.Julia Cosgrove has been atop Afar's masthead from the beginning. She comes from a magazine and journalism family. And despite their warnings about the industry, she joined the family business anyway because what kid listens to their parents? When the founders of Afar Media plucked her out of ReadyMade magazine and told her that no other travel magazine felt experiential to them, she understood and joined the team.Travel media has changed a lot over the years. One has to ask what moves a media consumer more: a magazine article about a beach in Croatia or the TikToks of numerous influencers on that same beach, extolling its virtues, reaching their millions of fans?Afar doesn't care. Because it believes in its mission and marches on, now in its 15th year, inviting its readers to experience the world, by diving in. ©2024 The Full-Bleed Podcast is a production of Magazeum LLC. Hello everyone! In today's episode, I do a recap of my recent school camping trip experience and reflect on seven years of memories marked by the K-pop girl group Blackpink. I also share an update of my Blackpink-related YouTube channel, which almost has 6k subscribers now. I want to express my gratitude to all my followers here and on YouTube with whom I share my life. Thank you. Scripts and useful expressions below. Email me if you have any questions or need help with anything! Have a great week! 圆满 (yuánmǎn) - Satisfactory, successful, complete更上一层楼 (gèng shàng yī céng lóu) - To reach a higher level风景如醉 (fēngjǐng rú zuì) - Scenery is intoxicating (beautiful landscape)旅途劳顿 (lǚtú láodùn) - Fatigue from the journey幸好 (xìnghǎo) - Fortunately重播 (chóngbō) - Replay回忆 (huíyì) - Memories, recollections定位 (dìngwèi) - Positioning, locating单曲 (dānqǔ) - Single (music track)起止 (qǐzhǐ) - Start and end, beginning and termination重复 (chóngfù) - Repeat, repetition尾声 (wěishēng) - The final part, conclusion安可 (ānkě) - Encore酸甜苦辣 (suān tián kǔ là) - The ups and downs, joys and sorrows (figuratively)相伴 (xiāngbàn) - To accompany空白期 (kòngbái qī) - Blank period, hiatus陪伴 (péibàn) - To accompany, to keep company饭拍 (fànpāi) - Fan video, fan-made video (often related to celebrities)现成 (xiànchéng) - Readymade, pre-made编辑 (biānjí) - Edit, editing标题 (biāotí) - Title描述 (miáoshù) - Description标签 (biāoqiān) - Tag, label恶意 (èyì) - Malicious, ill-intentioned诅咒 (zǔzhòu) - Curse侮辱 (wǔrǔ) - Insult, insulted威胁 (wēixié) - Threat, threaten攻击 (gōngjī) - Attack, assault隐藏 (yǐncáng) - Hide, conceal越线 (yuèxiàn) - Cross the line, go too far (figuratively)Support the showThank you for listening. On this special episode, male-identifying hosts Matt Hennessey and Ryan Edgington have been excommunicated from the programme in favour of guest hosts Lydia Porter and Alessia Arcuri who spoke to Katy Hessel about her new book, "The Story of Art Without Men." How many women artists do you know? Who makes art history? Did women even work as artists before the twentieth century? And what is the Baroque anyway?Discover the glittering Sofonisba Anguissola of the Renaissance, the radical work of Harriet Powers in the nineteenth-century USA, and the artist who really invented the Readymade. Explore the Dutch Golden Age, the astonishing work of post-War artists in Latin America, and the women artists defining art in the 2020s. Have your sense of art history overturned, and your eyes opened to many art forms often overlooked or dismissed. From the Cornish coast to Manhattan, Nigeria to Japan this is the history of art as it's never been told before....And lest you had previously considered this show to be too male-dominated, this quasi-tokenistic act of self-immolation on the part of Matt and Ryan now permits us to never again address any future criticisms you may have about this fine programme. Especially if they are warranted. As always, we will continue to accept flattery and well wishes, as well as the occasional pint. This is The Hatchards Podcast... without men.
It's 1848 and a London-based company is changing the way that clothes are made and sold. E Moses and Son operate out of striking buildings across the capital. Men from all points of the compass are converging on the store with one thing in mind. They want a suit. In episode six of Torn, Gus Casely-Hayford finds that quick returns, division of labour, economies of scale and thoughtful innovative investment in advertising are among what will shape the history and present of low cost fashion. While there is no evidence that E Moses and Son used sweated labour, their innovation led to plenty of their competitors to do so, particularly sweated women. Gus explores how the advent of sweatshops in the 1860s gave rise to exploitation in the garment industry. From the British city of Leicester that saw higher than average infection rates during COVID, to the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka where over 1000 workers died in a building collapse in 2014, the legacy of exploitation continues to the present day. With historian Sheila Blackburn, child labourer-turned-activist Kalpona Akter, and archival material from the readymade suit manufacturers E Moses and Sons. This is the third episode in our 4-part series, Behind the Spine. In this series, we've shifted focus away from the authors to hear from some of the talented folks who work behind the scenes to create the beautiful cookbooks that we all love. You've already heard from the recipe testers and photographers, and today we'll hear from the folks who bring that content together into one book: the graphic designers. We'll start with a peek into the mind of Frances Baca – she'll teach us about typographic details that can set a book apart from the rest, how she begins a new design project, and the characteristics that make cookbook design special. Frances designed her first cookbook at 7-years-old. “Snacks” the homemade cookbook, featured a green construction paper cover with a yarn binding. Suffice it to say, Frances has always known that she wanted to design books, and not just cookbooks, though that's what we'll focus on today. She studied design at Rhode Island School of Design, where she learned to pay close attention to the minuscule details that can make books so special. She talks about sticking up for her readers and the unique challenge of designing a cookbook, which she says ought to be a multi-sensory experience. Because cookbooks are also practical books that we use in our day-to-day lives, Frances stresses the importance of accessibility in her work: everything from making the font large enough to read to ensuring the spine lays flat on the countertop – Frances tries to account for it all. You'll also hear from the San Francisco-based artist and graphic designer, George McCalman – his work spans different industries, but he focuses mostly on clients in food media and the art world. He opened the doors to his own design studio, McCalman Co. in 2011, where he works on branding for clients and does projects like cookbook design. Prior to starting his own business, he worked for award-winning magazines including ReadyMade, Mother Jones, and Entertainment Weekly. Today, we zoom in on his design process for Black Food, the first publication for Bryant Terry's imprint, 4 Color Books. George talks to us about flipping the traditional design model upside down, facilitating collaboration between all the folks on the creative team, and how he sees himself as a graphic designer: as a steward of information. "And so you're asking a lot of somebody who's reading a cookbook. You're kind of engaging them, you know, head, heart, and hands, really. It's this very different way of relating to a book than you are to an art book. And that's why I love designing cookbooks because there's a creative aspect to it, but there's also a very practical aspect, too. And you have to kind of keep that balance in mind whenever you're designing." —Frances Baca, book designer and creative directorThis is the third episode in our four-part series, Behind the Spine.
