We've noticed we start off each show kind of sluggish so we throw to Kriss Kross to Warm It Up! Did you ever wear your clothes backwards? Govier remembers a terrible movie from 2001 called Killer Bud with Robert Stack as The Gooch. Cue the Unsolved Mysteries theme! Luke is a passionate fan of the movie Ravenous, but he could not recall the main theme from the film's score. Pat Robertson bit the big one and it's about damn time that homophobe left this plane of existence. When will Henry Kissinger die? Cormac McCarthy also hit the high road. Luke loves him, but Steve was more curious about Werner Herzog reading McCarthy's work in his silly Herzog voice. Silvio Berlusconi is dead too! Why did any Italians mourn him in the streets?! And Bunga Bunga will always be connected to Joe Versus The Volcano for Govier. Steve's mom burned VHS tapes and vinyl records when he was younger. She was definitely committed to her obsession. This leads to an overall frustration with the people we love who are locked in on their beliefs without any doubt on their face as they push the word of the people who proselytized them. We read your emails! We have two each from Mr. Pink & Christian! Thank you for the curiosities and questions you offer each episode. Mike is pissed because the term rotting has taken off on TikTok lately while the original rotting, burning people were Mike & Steve. Mr. Pink wants to know how to unwind when he has time off work. Steve and Luke are fine getting hammered on booze but the teetotaler Govier demands more. Also, what's your favorite Smoke? Porn is not a part of Mike's life anymore, but in the 2000's Mike was depressed and downloading a lot of porn before it became even more accessible last decade. The pixie cut of the 90's has apparently become the haircut of the modern day Karens? Remember the novel Snow Crash from the early 90's? It's a science fiction novel that Steve thinks may be the impetus for Facebook's garbo Metaverse. Also Trump was indicted and nobody cares here because what does it matter when he's running for president from the can? It's all trash. We love you all! Really! We are very pleased with our little world that together we have formed thanks to this show. This show has no substance to it without you listening and emailing. We close the show with Fear And Trembling by Gang Of Youths. If any of our nonsense provokes your thoughts, please share them with us at isitsafepod@gmail.com

Barkum Deer are Louis Giannamore and Jenny Ames, two talented musicians who met in a London house share and bonded over their love of early Renaissance music, black metal, and Björk. Amid the bleak reality of a winter lockdown, the pair found a space for creative collaboration unencumbered by deadlines or expectations, fuelled by the catharsis of experimentation. Jenny graduated from the RCA, and as a classically trained viola player, has performed with Björk, Floating Points and Mica Levi, while Louis is a drummer, producer, and graduate of Berklee College of Music who's collaborated with the likes of Gang of Youths, Master Peace, and First Light Records labelmate Kinn. Earlier this year, they released their debut self-titled album Barkum Deer (First Light Records, 2022), a dense half-hour trip into bass-rich drones, anxious strings and skittering electronic flourishes. Viola, drums, Jenny's voice, and found samples (creaking doors and dusty footsteps) all come together to form a beautifully cinematic and abstract exploration. The track's sound is designed with a special awareness that makes it something really special, endowing the compositions with a haunting enduring physicality. In some tracks, travelling pulsating drums make you feel like galloping on a horse's back at 100 miles per hour; in others, it's the viola pulsating or stretching, with its string's sound plunging into one body, pungently expanding and contracting within. About the mix they have prepared for us, the whole of it is enveloped in found sounds and field recordings recorded by Louis: I've been on tour for most of 2022 with a band called Gang Of Youths, so I have had the opportunity to capture sounds from all over the world. There is a thunderstorm that you'll hear in there I luckily timed and captured perfectly, Louis shares. The mix opens with a live version of their song 'Folding Fog' and an alternative version of -also theirs- 'Labyrinth', which is found exclusively on the CD format of the album. Following, there are two solo pieces by Jenny and Louis, both of which can be found online. To round it off, they say, we have a roughly mixed, unreleased song for Barkum Deer. It's not even finished, but I love the way it sounds. Referring to my comment earlier, I've been trying to teach my ears to listen to the world around us as if it were music. I feel this mix mirrors that. I'm chuffed about it. Tracklist: 00:00 - ‘Folding Fog' - Piano/acoustic rendition (intro) 03:40 - ‘Folding Fog' - Live 12:38 -‘ Labyrinth' - CD exclusive/alternative version 19:09 - ‘Chrome' - solo piece by Louis Giannamore 23:12 - ‘Organ' - solo piece by Jenny Ames 27:25 - ‘Ground' - unreleased song by Barkum Deer

Today Australian singer/songwriter and returning friend of the show Charlie Collins joins us to discuss a future classic album, the recently released masterpiece from Gang of Youths ‘Angel in Realtime'. As a longtime friend of the band, Charlie delves into the background of the record and how the passing of frontman David Le'aupepe's father inspired the album, how the addition of new member Tom Hobden shifted the dynamics within the band, the global recording process that stretched from Auckland to London to Copenhagen, creating beauty out of grief, why this is the record and band we all need right now, what it was like to see these songs connect with audiences when Charlie recently opened for Gangs' UK tour, being baffled by sports references, the incredible and diverse contributions from each band member and why this record would make a great Broadway musical.

Gang Of Youths was recently named one of the most Indiecast bands, but what other musicians fit nicely in with the Indiecast brand? Since the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame was in the news this week thanks to Dolly Parton (2:43), Indiecast hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen decide to induct four albums into the Indiecast Hall Of Fame (29:04).Steven and Ian also discuss some of the biggest news in indie music this week, which this time had to do with a somewhat imaginary feud between Japanese Breakfast and Machine Gun Kelly (11:08). After MGK shared his upcoming album cover, many Japanese Breakfast fans pointed out its similarities to Jubilee's artwork. But that begs the questions: Does MGK even know what a persimmon is? And, more importantly, has he ever heard a Japanese Breakfast song?In this week's Recommendation Corner (51:09), Ian talks Oso Oso surprise-releasing their fourth studio album. Steven discusses his recent Uproxx interview with Destroyer's Dan Bejar ahead of next week's new album.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. It's another stacked week here at Riot Act Towers. Steve and Remfry have been busying themselves with a whole host of things; watching Gang Of Youths blow the roof off at Brixton Academy, reviewing new albums from Cypress Hill, Feeder and Gloson, chewing the fat over news about Dolly Parton, The Rolling Stones and Jack White and picking one fantastic soundtrack each from a terrible movie. Yes, while The Crow: City of Angels and Batman Forever were both pretty crud, the soundtrack that accompanied them were both full of some of our favourite artists doing some legit bangers. Korn, Nick Cave, Deftones, Sunny Day Real Estate, Massive Attack, U2, Hole, White Zombie, Bush, Filter, Method Man, Seal and PJ Harvey (twice) are just some of the artists featured over these two corking soundtracks. Gang of Youths are a band of misfit toys from Australia who've won the hearts of audiences all over the world. But what comes next after releasing two wildly successful albums, winning a bunch of ARIA Awards (the Australian equivalent of the Grammys), and touring with the likes of Foo Fighters, Mumford and Sons, and Sam Fender? Well, clearly it's time to fuck things up, which is exactly what the band has done on their third album, Angel In Realtime (which is out now). The album delves into frontman David Le'Aupepe contrasting his experiences with his late father with new revelations of who he used to be. On today's episode, I chat with David and bassist Max Dunn about how fatherhood both expectedly and unexpectedly inspired the new album, along with the significance of crafting a third album.

Hey everyone, it's been a while, but we're back with another Riot Act Reviews, and, good lord, do we have a good one. Steve and Remfry are looking at Angel In Realtime. by Gang of Youths, the third studio album by the Australian alternative rock band and the follow up to their 2017 album Go Farther In Lightness. Although they're pretty successful here in the UK, Gang of Youths are much more of a sizable band in their native Australia and the US. The release of Angel In Realtime. looks like it will change that dramatically though, as this is one of the most poignant, personal, inspiring and ambitious albums of 2022. The narrative around the album focuses on the death and legacy of frontman David Le'aupepe's father, his relationship with a person he describes as “the most important man in my life” and his reaction to the stunning revelations that came to light in the aftermath of his passing. This is all explored musically with a vast sonic palette that recalls everyone from Arcade Fire to Pulp to The National to Talk Talk to The Verve to Springsteen to Radiohead and beyond. It all sounds very ambitious, but has Le'aupepe done his muse justice with this record? Spoiler; unquestionably he has. https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/gang-of-youths/angel-in-realtime (Want Angel in Realtime in your life? (And trust us, you do!) Following that, we paid tribute to some of the forgotten greats of funk & soul's female vocalists while also showcasing the new joints from Elise LeGrow, Allen Stone, and Abi Farrell amongst others. For our 2nd hour AMPED rock feature, Danno couldn't have Dan Lloyd join in the studio due to the ongoing flu battle this week, but as usual Gwangju's Man On The Drums brought the heat with his playlist and new rock cuts from the likes of IDLES, Gang of Youths, Pinegrove, and many more. #feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – He Said I Can (Live)Marie “Queenie” Lyons – See & Don't SeeThe Bahama Soul Club feat John Lee Hooker – Never Roam No MoreCamille Yarbrough – Take Yo' PraiseElise LeGrow – Drinking In The DayMaggie Rose feat Marcus King – What Makes You Tick Part II (30:33)Queens Cast & Brandy – Ain't No SunshineAllen Stone with Alessia Cara – Bed I MadeEl Michels Affair feat Piya Malik – Idhar UdharAbi Farrell – Don't Follow MeLos Days feat Tommy Guerrero & Josh Lippi – Floating Against The Night SkyMavis Staples – ChangeGA-20 – Naggin' On My MindBuddy Guy - The First Time I Met The Blues (Live)Part III (57:46)Darkness - It's Love, JimIDLES - The WheelHot Water Music - Killing TimeCoheed and Cambria - Rise, Naianasha (Cut the Cord)Gang of Youths - Tend the GardenMitski – The Only Heartbreaker Part IV (88:44)Korn - Start the HealingConverge - CoilPinegrove - AlaskaNHC- The Devil That You KnowElbow - Six Wordsfanclubwallet – That I Won't Do
As broadcast October 14, 2021 with plenty of extra stones to throw for you podcast troublemakers. We begin tonight noting a lawsuit from 2003 by Barrington Henderson, the last of the original Temptations and a former member of The Dramatics who sued the band and Motown on this date for lack of royalties. After that, we had new joints from some people that are becoming legends right now such as Adrian Quesada, Web Web, and Flevans along with older joints from The Ebonys and a remix of an Otis Redding classic to boot! Lots of new tunes as well in our 2nd hour with Dan Lloyd, with albums already out as of last week from Sam Fender and The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, along with a new upcoming album from (speaking of living legends) Billy Bragg.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)The Dramatics – Your Love Was StrangeOtis Redding – Hard To Handle (DJ Spinna Galactic Funk Remix)Brownout – I Won't LieAdrian Quesada feat Brownout – Funky ChickMF Robots – Mother Funkin' Robots (alt vers)Flevans – Loose Gardener Part II (32:26)Web Web – Inner RevolutionWeb Web & Mulatu Astatke – Meskel Flowers (alt vers)Emanative feat Ahu – Turn The Lights OnMeernaa – BellsYellow Days – Belong TogetherThe Ebonys – Life In The Country Part III (62:41)Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes – Off With His Head ft CassyetteSam Fender – The LevellerThe World Is A Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid to Die – TroubleDan Andriano and the Bygones – Dear DarknessGang of Youths – The Man Himself Part IV (93:00)The Last Gang – ShamelessCirca Survive – Impostor SyndromeWe Are the Union / Eve 6 – Sound System (Operation Ivy cover)Billy Bragg – Mid Century ModernNoah Gundersen – Atlantis ft. As broadcast July 19, 2021 with plenty of extra pop for you podcast imbibers. We mark the unfortunate passing of Biz Markie over the weekend aged just 57 after a long battle with health problems. Known to most of the public as the genius behind "Just A Friend," to those who knew him he was one of the most prolific collectors of rare grooves & funk 45s on the planet with an encyclopedic knowledge of samples. A true teacher of the next generation in hip-hop and soul, he will be missed. After our somber opener, we welcome all the new tunes you can take in for the remainder of the two hours, with our fantastic new contributor Stella (미랑) joining the show for the next six weeks on our Popcast 2nd hour!#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Freddie Scott – (You) Got What I NeedChiiild & Jenson McRae – GoneSyd – Fast CarGang of Youths – unisonClairo – ZinniasClairo – AmeobaPart II (30:46)Chet Faker – It's Not YouStill Woozy – Get DownHAIM – Cherry-Flavored Stomach AcheHovvdy – True LoveTeenage Priest – Small TalkTycho feat Benjamin Gibbard – Only LoveCaroline Polachek – Bunny Is A Rider Part III (60:10)John Mayer – Shot in the DarkPop Smoke – Demeanor (ft. As broadcast June 24, 2021 with bonus bows for The High Priestess. We mark this date in 1958 when Nina Simone made her full-length debut. A singular figure in music history, there was never any half steppin with the one they called The High Priestess of Soul but we at Drop Central are convinced was an actual goddess of truth & light. Our Sampled first hour featured great new tunes from Kamasi Washington, Moodymann, Horse Meat Disco & Peggy Gou, while our 2nd hour was a tremendous blend of new rock tunes from The Wildhearts, Gang of Youths, New Found Glory, along with our rock maestro ripping apart the "Bandsplaining" podcast to finish the night right.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Llorca – Indigo Blues (radio edit)Moodymann feat CD – Keep On ComingHorse Meat Disco & The Phenomenal Handclap Band – Sanctuary (Ray Mang remix)Body Music & Bosq feat Xavier Smith – There's A MagicSun Ra – Door of the Cosmos (Armonica Cosmos Mix) Part II (31:48)sir Was – Waiting for the WeekendPeggy Gou feat OHHYUK – NabiOrgone feat Terin Ector – DreamerThe Rebels of Tijuana – Brazil 70The Harlem Gospel Travelers – Keep On PrayingKamasi Washington – Sun Kissed Child Part III (60:43)The Wildhearts – Remember These DaysModest Mouse – The Sun Hasn't LeftTeenage Bottlerocket – Ghost StoryGang of Youths – Angel of 8th Ave.The Killers – Dustland ft Bruce SpringsteenPart IV (90:46)Radiohead – CreepNew Found Glory - The Last Red-EyeAngels and Airwaves – Restless SoulsRed Hot Chili Peppers – Give It AwayBriston Maroney – Bottle Rocket ft Manchester Orchestra

Happy holidays! It's Christmas Eve, the perfect time to begin our discussion of Conor Oberst's discography, and a perfect excuse to start with 2002's A Christmas Album! It's a semi-official Bright Eyes recording and a collaboration between Oberst and Maria Taylor to benefit the Nebraska AIDS Project, which you can buy here: https://saddle-creek.com/products/a-christmas-album "Blood" by The Middle East: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjB2hbMYIXo "Blood" by Gang Of Youths (shoutout to Mollie) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLTO3U5644A The Live Album https://zacharylittle.bandcamp.com/album/the-live-album
Despite being a baby when it was released, Eilish Gilligan has long been fascinated by the Counting Crows classic 'August and Everything After', an album that captured the existential malaise of a generation when it was released in 1993. We talk about how Eilish's relationship with songs like 'Round Here' have changed over the years as she's gone from child to teen to young woman, how Adam Duritz's mental health issues manifest in his lyrics, why Gang of Youths are the Counting Crows of today, extroverted introverts in the music world, how seeing Counting Crows live taught Eilish to be a better performer and why she'd rather listen to this record than many of the classics that influenced it. My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia who has worked in the music industry since 2007. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the feature film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins, in addition to many commercials and music videos.
