They toured the world and navigated the boys club and stepped out onto the main stage sometimes together, sometimes apart. Across all those years, their sisterhood has seen them both through arguments and fights, divorce, addiction, loss and those endless trips in tour buses… the things of many a midlife. And despite being deeply different people they are, still doing it, and living round the corner from each other and their parents, who are now in their 90s, making family the centre of their world. Melbourne-born sisters, Vika and Linda Bull, grew up singing at church, and were taught how to harmonize by their Tongan mother. The talented siblings first made their mark as members of Joe Camilleri's The Black Sorrows in the late 1980s, also providing backing vocals for other artists including Hunters and Collectors, Archie Roach, John Farnham, Deborah Conway, and Paul Kelly. In 1994 they left the band to launch their own career as a duo, releasing their debut self-titled album that same year. The album was produced by Kelly, and peaked at No. 7 on the ARIA Albums Chart, reaching certified platinum and nominated for an ARIA Music Award in 1995 for 'Breakthrough Artist – Album'. Vika and Linda had four singles, “Hard Love”, "We've Started a Fire", "When Will You Fall For Me", and "House of Love”, the latter two were featured as backing music on the soap opera, Home and Away. The pair have since had near-inseparable careers, releasing eight studio albums and twenty-one singles, collaborating closely with the likes of Paul Kelly, Diesel and Renée Geyer and cementing their place as national musical treasure. Vika and Linda have a long and decorated music career, with constant critical acclaim, including four ARIA Award nominations for Best Adult Contemporary Album, a Special Recognition Award at the Pacific Music Awards, and performed the national anthem at the AFL Grand Final. In 2019 they were inducted into the Music Victoria Hall of Fame and in 2020, their retrospective album 'Akilotoa: Anthology (1994-2006) entered the Australian charts at number one, making Vika and Linda the first Australian female duo to debut at No. 1. They are currently finalists for the Artistic Excellence Award at the 2023 Australian Women in Music Awards. Their music has traversed genres over the past three decades, incorporating rock, country, gospel, reggae, R&B, soul and blues, as well as paying tribute to their rich Tongan heritage.

The voices of Vika and Linda Bull have been lifting the spirit of listeners for decades now. That continued last year when, under isolation, they shared a series of gospel songs with fans on social media.
My guest today is Peter Luscombe. Peter is drummer, musician, producer and musical director from Melbourne, Australia. From Joe Camilleri and the Black Sorrows, Vika and Linda Bull, Stephen Cummings amongst many others, to the house drummer and MD for long running SBS music quiz show RocKwiz, and of course, Peter is the long time drummer and band member of The Paul Kelly Band. As some of you may have noticed, we had the enchanting Valeriya Gogunskaya visiting Hamburg in August. Valeriya gave skating workshops with us in longboard dancing and freestyle. At the end of her visit we found the time to record a podcast with Valeriya and talk to her about life as a longboard dancer and the longboard community in Portugal. Over a career spanning three decades, Vika and Linda Bull have traversed the musical universe, drawing on the influences of soul, gospel, rock, country, and the island music of their Tongan ancestry.
Darren is teaming up with other aussie rockers for a one off The Beatles, Abbey Road Tour around Aus. In October 2019 The Beatles opus Abbey Road returned to #1 around the world, 50 years after its release, cementing its place as arguably the greatest album of all time. In August 2019, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, some of Australia's most respected musicians and members of iconic groups, collectively known as ARC — Kram (SPIDERBAIT), Mark Wilson (JET), Davey Lane (YOU AM I) and Darren Middleton (POWDERFINGER), brought The Beatles' most audacious creation to life on stage, performing Abbey Road in full, from start to finish, followed by a second set comprising of a selection of hits spanning the breadth of The Beatles’ career and catalogue. The reaction was momentous: sold-out shows, rapturous reviews and standing ovations every night. To meet with the incredible demand and to celebrate the album returning to #1, the band are heading back out on the road for a final run of shows. Adm Ventoura is a “first call” bass guitarist based in Sydney. He has worked across a wide range of musical styles throughout Australia and also in South America, USA, UK, Asia, the Middle East and New Zealand. Over the last 25 years, he has played, recorded and toured with an array of artists and musicians in concerts, clubs, and for radio and television. These artists include Al Green, Kelly Rowland, Lupe Fiasco, Jon Stevens, Guy Sebastian, Ian Moss, Kate Ceberano, Vika and Linda Bull, and Jessica Mauboy, Karen Lee Andrews and Delta Goodrem. In addition to this performance experience Adm has composed works and been accompanist for Quantum Leap Youth Dance Ensemble, Dance Tank (Sydney Opera House), Steps Youth Dance Company – WA, the Victorian College of the Arts, Sonic Mayhem Orchestra and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
