Jarrod Spector (King George III in Hamilton Broadway) is back for round two. In this episode, Jarrod talks about heading to New York City to study at the Atlantic Theater Company and starting his Broadway career. After being fired from Jersey Boys before he even started, Jarrod went on to play a record-breaking 1500 performances at Frankie Valli. We also talk Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, The Cher Show, and collaborating with his fantastic wife Kelli Barrett. Jarrod also discusses landing KGIII in Hamilton, explains why the role is like "starting on third base", and reflects on his long history of playing real people. Jarrod Spector, Hamilton Broadway's current King George III, is on the podcast! This week, Jarrod talks about growing up in Philadelphia where he started performing on the Al Alberts Showcase at barely three years old. From there, he did his Bobby Darin act on Star Search for a while, humbly passed on The Mickey Mouse Club, and at nine years old he landed the role of Gavroche in Les Miserables where he performed in Philly, Chicago, and eventually on Broadway. Jarrod also opens up about his somewhat tumultuous early college experience, (girl, same) and we have a very honest conversation about some tricky life lessons we both learned around the same time. This week wraps up my chat with Jonathan Butler-Duplessis (Hamilton Broadway: Aaron Burr, George Washington, and Mulligan/Madison) and he's taking questions from The Patreon Peeps so we're all over the map. There's lots of pizza talk (obviously), Jonathan gives advice about being weird and authentic and finding your people, he talks about his fascination with the 2019 Cats movie, manifests his dream of playing Elphaba, and confesses how many times he's read that erotica book that's onstage at Hamilton. Plus! Jonathan explains why he sees his Broadway debut as Burr as a return on a lot of people's investments, and he does some deep introspection about relating to the frustration and ambition of Aaron Burr, a role Jonathan never thought he'd play because according to him, "no one is ever gonna let him LEAD a show." Jonathan Butler-Duplessis (Hamilton Broadway: Aaron Burr, George Washington, and Mulligan/Madison) is back for round two! In this episode, we kick off talking about his experience playing Jim Conley in Parade. It was a really intense audition process, Jonathan couldn't afford contacts for the first half of the run so could barely see and the audience looked like blobs, and he had to deal with several instances of the cops being called on him for existing while Black. But according to Jonathan, all of this craziness actually *helped* his performance. We also dive into his Hamilton story, which starts with the belief that he was wrong for absolutely every part in the show. Of course that wasn't the case because we eventually hear the story about how Jonathan was giving Lin-Manuel Miranda shit for eating Sicilian style pizza at the Richard Rodgers so things worked out pretty well! Side note: Jonathan takes his Chicago pizza very, very seriously. Jonathan also has an incredibly moving debut experience, and talks about what it was like to play Aaron Burr for the first time. He explains his connection to Wait For It and how he carries his past with him as he moves forward. /// Jonathan on Instagram Jade Armor The Plate Show Podcast /// Gillian's Website The Hamilcast on Twitter The Hamilcast on Instagram Join the Patreon Peeps
Jonathan Butler-Duplessis is currently in the Broadway company of Hamilton covering Aaron Burr, George Washington, and Mulligan/Madison. Jonathan grew up in Chicago singing in church and got his first break thanks (in part) to his grandmother's babysitting gig. He did a lot of community theatre but by the time he graduated from high school, he stopped performing. After a quick (not great!) experience at a Christian bible college, Jonathan had the opportunity to audition for the University of Illinois and he took it. He worked hard, he wanted to learn, he used the tools they gave him, and he kicked off his prolific career. Jonathan has this No Shortcuts mantra and it's definitely the vibe of his three episodes. From professional wrestling, to a metaphysical discussion of Beyonce's Renaissance, to his love of small details, it all seems to come back to how all of these things effect his performance in Hamilton and everything else he does. /// Jonathan on Instagram Jade Armor The Plate Show Podcast /// Gillian's Website The Hamilcast on Twitter The Hamilcast on Instagram Join the Patreon Peeps

Brandee Danielle Huston loves being Hamilton Broadway's Hair Supervisor, but it wasn't an easy journey getting there. As Brandee tell us in this episode, things are a lot different for people of color, women, LGBTQ+ folks, and those in women-dominated fields. From poor work conditions to pay disparities to unpleasant interactions, there is inequity all over this industry. It's so important making someone feel confident going on stage, and the work is very personal, but that isn't always acknowledged. Since working at Hamilton, though, Brandee finally feels like she's been set up for success. Brandee tells us how she got there, and walks us through how she earned the trust of the cast as a white woman working with BIPOC hair. /// Brandee on Instagram Gillian's Website The Hamilcast on Twitter The Hamilcast on Instagram Join the Patreon Peeps

She grew up in a 5th generation carnival concession business and has been working since she was two years old. Inspired by painting people's faces at carnivals, she started working in theatre, and when she saw that there was a job in fixing the Santa beards for the famous Rockettes show and she thought, "Why am I not doing THIS?!" Brandee did everything from pushing boxes backstage, electrical work, sound, handling props, driving a forklift, you name it... all while going to cosmetology school. Tamar Greene (Hamilton Broadway's George Washington) is a classical trained pianist, an opera singer, a voice teacher, a founding member of Ham4Progress, and a guy who appreciates the revitalization that comes with embracing the unexpected. That's what his three episodes have been all about. Tamar started his career in music literally hiding behind a piano because it was easier on his stage fright. For years, he resisted accepting his vocal talent. So, he got a bachelor's degree in computer information systems but the music stuff was still nagging at him. On his way to class, he'd walk the halls of the music department, admiring the beautiful pianos and listening to other vocalists and thinking, "you know maybe I *could* make a living in music." Tamar embraced everything he was interested in and now he's accepted that he can be passionate about all of it. Being in bands like Bitchin' Kitchen means he learned, as he says "the business of the business." - traveling, booking, splitting the door money with the band, all that stuff. A degree in computer information systems means that he could put on concerts during lockdown without worrying about the tech side of things. So I guess what I'm saying is that Tamar Greene knows what he's talking about and he also walks the walk so you should take what he says to heart. This week, Tamar talks about performing orchestral versions of South Park Songs, his favorite SNOBs (Saturday Night on Broadway), leading with love, and he unexpectedly walks us through his Washington's mental and emotional arc leading up to One Last Time. Plus, Tamar talks about grappling with the colonizing slave owning history of the founding fathers, the power of a Black man playing George Washington, and how this ties into his role as an original member of Ham4Progress. Tamar Greene (Hamilton Broadway's George Washington) talks about checking in with yourself to reassess and possibly change course, which can actually be very rejuvenating. In fact, that's what led him to musical theatre, from auditioning in stairwells to going out on tour and eventually landing on Broadway. Remember the guy who didn't think he could sing or make it professionally as a musician? Seems like a lifetime ago. And of course, we dive into his long history with Hamilton. He went from knowing nothing about the show and turning down tickets to see it, to winning the lottery and falling in love with it, then passing on a callback after years of auditions, to finally stepping into the role of Washington in Chicago and making the transition to Broadway. So get ready, because this week you're gonna hear about how Tamar made his way to acting on stage, something that has yet to come up in his long list of interests and career choices. #HamiltonCHI Episodes: Party in Chicago! Tamar Greene, Hamilton Broadway's current George Washington, returns to The Hamilcast! Tamar was first on the podcast back in 2019 when I saw Hamilton in Chicago and threw a big party recording with the cast. Those are episodes 181-185 if you're interested. That party was so much fun but it's hard to do a deep dive with someone in those recordings, so it's always nice to be able to sit down one on one and really get into it... and that's exactly what's happening with Tamar because he's been on a JOURNEY. Tamar's mother was a singer and a pianist who ended up retiring as a nurse, and his father was a DJ and promoter focusing on Jamaican artists. He owned a record store and threw parties and events in the community. Growing up, Tamar and his nine siblings all had to learn an instrument. He chose the piano because, as he says, it was easy to hide behind. Throughout Tamar's life, the people around him kept encouraging him to sing but he fought them every step of the way. Even as he was studying for his BA in Computer Information Systems (which he has, by the way), he found himself wandering the halls of the music department... always drawn to this life he didn't know how to live. Is it even possible to do music professionally? What does that look like? #HamiltonCHI Episodes: Party in Chicago! In today's episode, I am interviewing a dear friend, Lily Ling, who is music director and conductor of the Hamilton Broadway show. I was connected with Lily through the mentorship program offered by the Maestra Music, an organization supporting women and non-binary musicians working in musical theater. They offered a lot of great webinars during the pandemic, and I was fortunate to be accepted into their program as a first cohort mentee. Full disclosure, I am not terribly familiar with the industry or practices of musical theater, but through Maestra Music I have made friends in the field. In my conversation with Lily, you will hear me asking lots of questions based on my assumptions of the profession, and her insider responses and her genuine sharing are just something that I love about her as a person and a great musician.Lily Ling is a Toronto based musician and the current Music Director and Conductor for the And Peggy tour of Hamilton. She is the first female to hold the title of Music Director and also the first person of East Asian descent to conduct the production. Most recently, Lily served as the Vocal Music Coordinator for the Netflix movie adaptation of 13: The Musical. Other theatrical credit highlihts include Music Director and Conductor for 20th Anniversary Off-Broadway revival of john & jen and Associate Music Director and Vocal Coach for the Chinese language premiere of The Lion King. She holds a BMus in Piano Performance from the University of Toronto and an MFA in Music Direction from Penn State University. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education degree in Music and Music Education at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Kurt Crowley is back for round two and this week we're talking about how Hamilton has its very own Department of the Treasury (aka the music department) and how they are - still! - constantly making sure the music is on the up and up. Kurt also gives insight into the rehearsal process now that HamFans are being cast in the show and they have to unlearn the album, which is a lot harder than you may think. AND! Kurt goes in on the "Toronto/Company Screams in Chaos" part of "The Room Where it Happens" to make sure we know *exactly* when to chime in with our approved location.
Kurt Crowley, Hamilton Broadway's music director, kicks of 2019 with three mindblowing episodes. In this first episode Kurt pulls back the curtain on the #SNOB tradition (Saturday Night on Broadway), tells stories from the earliest days of Hamilton, goes in on his friendship/working relationship with Alex Lacamoire, and plays tons of motifs and musical gems because OF COURSE I MADE SURE THE KEYBOARD WAS PRESENT!
YOU GUYS LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA DJ'D DEANNA'S WEDDING AND SHE TELLS THE WHOLE STORY AND IT'S AMAZING. We also talk about Deanna's fantastic problem solving skills, how to balance work and friendship, and The Naked Wall™ (yes it's a thing and yes you get all the details!).
Hamilton Broadway's assistant stage manager, Deanna Weiner, is back again with more stories from the early development stages of the production. From Lin-Manuel Miranda padding around in his slippers to the importance of a Burger King crown for director Tommy Kail, Deanna was actually in the room where it happened.
Deanna Weiner, the assistant stage manager for Hamilton on Broadway, is here to blow your mind. Deanna has been with the show since the early workshop days at The Public (we're talking 2013, fam) and has so much intel it's crazy. This episode covers Deanna's journey to Hamilton (oh hai Meryl Streep and Brian Cox and Stephen Sondheim and Ariana Grande to name a few) and how being randomly assigned to work on reading of a little thing called The Hamilton Mixtape changed her life.
