Great Pop Culture Debate

When Hamilton premiered off-Broadway on February 17, 2015, it created an instant sensation, making American history genuinely exciting for modern audiences, and transforming Broadway with his color-blind casting. Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda built on the blending of hip-hop and traditional Broadway musical styles that he brought to bear on In the Heights to tell the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and the birth of our nation. The show was nominated for 16 Tony Awards, winning 11 of them including Best Musical, and won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama; its original Broadway cast recording peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and reached No. 1 on the Billboard rap albums chart. Now, 10 years after its debut, the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to back to the room where it happened as we determine the Best Hamilton Song. Songs discussed include: “Satisfied,” “It's Quiet Uptown,” “Dear Theodosia,” “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story,” “Alexander Hamilton,” “Wait For It,” “What'd I Miss?” “You'll Be Back,” “Burn,” “Non Stop,” “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down),” “Helpless,” “The Schuyler Sisters,” “One Last Time,” “The Room Where It Happened,” “My Shot.” Join host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelists Gary Jackson and Joelle Boedecker, and Patreon sponsor Kathy Kingsley as they discuss 16 of the most beloved songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. A little more than a week ago I asked a question on social media. If you're a musical theater nerd like I am, there's always a song early in the first act called, the “I want song”. This is the song the hero of the story sing to set up the journey you're about to go on. In Hamilton it's the song “My Shot”. In the Little Mermaid it's a part of your world. In Rent, it's the title song called Rent. In Wicked it's the Wizard and I. I could go on and on and on. But in nearly every single musical there is a song. It's belted out, loud and proud. Over spring break I really thought of what I really wanted and how would by song go? What would it say? What did I want? What has been my purpose? This honest appraisal of what you want is a tough introspective look. It's incredibly uncomfortable. Here's how my "I want" song goes....Details on the Contest*no purchase necessary to winTo get entered to win an 8x10 print by Adam, here's what you need to do. 1. The number one song on the charts is a bit of a mystery. “We Don't Talk About Bruno” is the unlikely hit from Disney's sleeper animated musical Encanto. Set in a mountainous village in Colombia, the film was a middling commercial success when it was released in Nov 2021. But in recent months it has become a pop culture phenomenon for a confluence of reasons: an expansive discourse on Colombian representation in media, fan videos on TikTok, and of course it's ear-wormy hits.  The musical is yet another notch in the belt for Lin Manuel Miranda (the auteur behind Hamilton and In The Heights) who wrote the now chart-topping song book. While Disney certainly commands vast commercial success, its musicals rarely see such crossover attention. The last #1 Disney musical number was “A Whole New World” from the animated Aladdin back in 1993. Where that song was literally uplifting, “We Don't Talk About Bruno” is quite the opposite.  Bruno is the uncle of the Madrigal family, whose skill for seeing the future portends gloom and sends him into exile. In his namesake song “We Don't Talk About Bruno,” an ensemble cast trade verses about his ghostly presence (Bruno haunts the family home, living inside its walls). It is an odd ball song, with dark and bizarre lyrics. Sure it starts with a story about rain on a wedding day (which is not ironic), but then it takes a hard left into tales of dead fish, middle aged weight gain, and creeping rats. So then what makes it a hit? A distinctive concoction of salsa piano rhythms, familiar Lin Manuel Miranda-isms, and contemporary pop connections to Camila Cabello, Britney Spears, J Balvin, Bad Bunny and Cardi B.  Listen to Switched On Pop to solve the mystery of what makes “We Don't Talk About Bruno” a hit.  SONGS DISCUSSED Lin Manuel Miranda - We Don't Talk About Bruno, In The Heights, Helpless, Satisfied, My Shot, Wait For It, Say No To This Cardi B, J Balvin, I Like It Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee - Despacito Camila Cabello, Young Thug - Havana Britney Spears - Baby One More Time Learn more about your ad choices. Conductor Devin Patrick Hughes interviews rapper Lightskin Legend on One Symphony today. Change is a mission statement for the charismatic 21 year-old Lightskin Legend, whose high aspirations to change the genre of hip hop and create social movement around the world drive his creative inspiration. A graduate of Rhodes College and master's student at the University of San Diego but originally from Colorado, Grayson Walker is the grandson of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer George Walker and son of renowned concert violinist Gregory T.S. Walker, who is also with us today.    Lightskin Legend has become a cult favorite with hits like “My Shot”, “Pretty Faces”, and “Main Thang”, and continues to expand in popularity as his unique lyricism and signature sound makes its way around the world. “My Shot” reached the top 25 in the U.K. iTunes Hip Hop Charts, and his latest album Commitment Issues seeks to build off that success. Lightskin Legend recently made his Symphonic debut on Gregory T.S. Walker's dream n the hood, and I'm excited to bridge the symphony and r&b worlds together.   There is a Parental Advisory warning on the music featured in this episode. If you have kids in the room please make appropriate adjustments. Thank you for joining us on One Symphony with Devin Patrick Hughes and thanks to Lightskin Legend for sharing his amazing gifts and insights, and to his father Gregory T.S. Hello and welcome or welcome back to another episode of Yasmine’s Warehouse! Today’s episode is actually an assignment for my AP Language and Composition class, but I had to share! The question we had to answer was “What shapes identity?” My assignment partner Wes Fowler and I discuss how musical theater can both shape and reflect identity. In my research I found the online movement named #TheaterInColor which inspired the name of our episode and the arguments within. Helping us in our analysis and sharing her story is actor, writer, director, and educator Ms. Sharon Miles. Working with Wes and Ms. Sharon was an honor. I am so glad that we were able to come together out of our love for musical theatre, and more, that I have a platform to share it with all of you. If you've seen Hamilton (or have had a Hamilton phase like me) you're in for a treat! I had so much fun editing this, particularly the ~rhetorical choices~, and I hope you appreciate the way it came out. When he’s not pursuing his dreams onstage, this performer spends his spare time translating musicals like Hamilton from English to Japanese, on a mission to bridge the gap between Japanese and American musical theater audiences. Gen Parton-Shin is a Japanese-British actor who made his professional debut as Angel in the Official Japanese cast of Rent in 2008. While pursuing his dreams in the US, he furthered his career with leading roles in Japan's official Broadway productions of next to normal (Gabe), Dracula (Jonathan), Bare (Jason), and Rocky Horror Show (Rocky). Gen also played the lead role in an original Japanese musical Mitsuko ~Love Crosses All Borders~ in 2010, composed by Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll and Hyde, The Civil War). He has been a part of numerous musical/play readings in NYC, including Other World (directed by Gabriel Barr and written by Hunter Bell and Jeff Bowen of Title of Show), off-Broadway’s K-pop, and Mafatu (produced by Broadway veteran Telly Leung). He co-founded a company called Broadway in Japan, which introduced Broadway musical theatre faculty to Japanese aspiring musical theatre performers, offering invaluable education opportunities in Japan. Gen has also appeared on TV, including roles on Season 4 of Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and The Other Two on Comedy Central. In addition, Gen has self-produced three solo cabaret shows, and in the latest one he translated and performed “My Shot” from Hamilton in Japanese. During our conversation, Gen describes his musical theater journey which has taken him from the stages of Japan, to those of New York. He shares that while performing in Japan, he wasn’t always satisfied with the translations they were given to work with; thus sparking his drive and desire to see if he could do the job himself. Gen has now translated about three fifths of Hamitlon into Japanese, comparing the process to completing a puzzle which he really enjoys.  He also shares that one of his life missions is “to bridge Japan and the U.S.”, which he has begun to do with his foray into translation, hoping to make American musical theater easier for Japanese audiences to listen to and process. In this episode, we talk about:  Why he identifies as a Third Culture Kid  Completing the One-Year Conservatory program at T. Schreiber Studio on a tourist visa How he was inspired to start translating musicals into Japanese  The intricacies of translating English to Japanese  Why he thinks musical theater is so popular in Japan  Takarazuka Revue - the all female musical theater troupe in Japan Connect with Gen and watch two of his Hamilton translations: Watch Hamilton's "My Shot" Watch Hamilton's "Helpless" Check out 35mm, A Musical Exhibition IG: @GenPartonShin Twitter: @GenPartonShin Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. I've mentioned the musical Hamilton many times on the podcast - and due to its recent release on Disney Plus, a lot of my inner circle have been talking and dreaming about Hamilton too! I can't even do justice to how awesome it is. I picked 3 songs like we all did, but I easily could have picked 3 other songs, or any of the songs my guests picked. The songs are just that damn good (like Triple H) and my favorites change from listen to listen. Not only is the play now available on Disney plus, but the album (on all streaming services) features every song, so you can relive the play over and over again. The whole thing is long, but it is definitely worth a deep dive.On this episode, I brought on returning guests Erin Brock & Zack Fennie as well as first time guest Christine Brock, and we had a great discussion about the history of the play, the production and some fun facts about the performances, as well as of course our top 3 favorite songs.Take a listen, hear a preview of some of the great music from a wonderful play!

Before photographing celebrities, entertainers, athletes, and CEO's for advertisements, national networks, and global brands, Natalie produced photo shoots world-renowned clients.  Uniquely equipped with both a media background, and non-profit training in youth trauma, creative workshop facilitation, interviewing techniques, and anti-oppression alignment, Natalie realized she could lend her varied expertise and insight to important causes in need of partnership.
