Interview with Arlen Roth 2024 Arlen Roth is a true guitar legend; part of the list of who he's recorded and toured with contains folks like Simon & Garfunkel (together and individually), John Prine, Phoebe Snow, Bob Dylan, Bee Gees, Don McLean, Levon Helm, Ry Cooder, Duane Eddy, Danny Gatton, Janis Ian, Dusty Springfield, John Sebastian, Johnny Winter and countless more. He also appeared with Ramblin' Jack Elliot and Patti Smith in the Martin Scorcese Rolling Thunder film, created the guitar parts and was consultant and teacher to Ralph Macchio for the legendary blues film, Crossroads. In 2016, he wrote and performed an acoustic guitar piece with Daveed Diggs and Leslie Odom, Jr. of Hamilton for ESPN. Arlen was voted in the Top 100 most Influential guitarists of all time by Vintage Guitar Magazine and top 50 all-time acoustic guitarists by Gibson.com. Now, on Arlen Roth's 20th solo album and his fifth all-acoustic offering, he's bringing rootsy acoustic music to new heights on Playing Out the String, set for release September 27 and distributed by MVD. The new album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Alex Salzman, who also contributes keyboards to the mix. Arlen's previous album, Super Soul Session, with bass legend Jerry Jemmott, sat atop the Blues and Soul charts for 22 straight weeks, and was in the Top 5 for 55 straight weeks this past year. Arlen has also been at the forefront of guitar and music education, with 10 best-selling books, and he was the first-ever to offer video instruction with the giants of the music industry through his “Hot Licks” company, which he started in 1979, and has had millions of students worldwide. His column for Guitar Player magazine was voted #1 by the largest margin of readers from 1982 to 1992, and was also turned into a best-selling book, Hot Guitar. On Playing Out the String, this all-acoustic, mostly solo album is very personal to Arlen and is really like getting an up-close "at home" concert in your living room. On it, he paints with broad strokes across several genres of music he loves. From "Old Timey" Norman Blake material to country blues from Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and Tampa Red; he even makes you feel at home with Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'" and gives his 12-string guitar a workout on the archetypical, "Walk Right In." https://www.arlenroth.com

And that's it! Another year, another season in the books people! Chris is back to talk to Dom about a sequel to one of their first ever podcast episodes from that legendary run back in 2019 when things felt so fresh and cool when things felt so new and not bogged down in pandemic hell...and it now belongs to Netflix. Greaaaaaat. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is a sequel to 2019's Knives Out, written and directed once again by Rian Johnson that sees Det. Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) taking on a new mystery, this time one that takes him to a private island and running into another colorful group of characters representing various and assorted members of the 1% that the internet has respectively turned on in the last few years. There's another murder and another killer to find, this time from a cast of characters that includes Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom, Jr., Janelle Monae, Kate Hudson, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline & Dave Bautista. Dom & Chris break down what they liked about the sequel, what they didn't, the Netflix of it all, what this movie's Oscar chances are, and what 2022 taught us about movies going into 2023. It's been a busy year, it's been a stressful year, but an eventful one. Melanie and I are so happy that our friend Travis Cottrell (aka FryDaddy) is joining us on this week's episode. Travis is a gifted worship leader, singer, musician, and songwriter who just so happens to love the Christmas season a lot. Like, A LOT A LOT. So when Mel and I talked about recording an episode that functions almost like a Christmas special (an extravaganza, if you will), asking Travis to join us was a no-brainer. His Neil Diamond impression alone is worth the (super free) price of admission. So. We're going to talk about the latest with Travis' family, we're going to talk about Christmas memories, we're going to talk about Christmas food, and we're going to talk about Christmas music. Plus, it's Melanie's turn for Five Favorites. See? AN EXTRAVAGANZA. One of the most evocative figures in the Torah does not get much attention because his brief appearance is embedded in a dry genealogy. His name is Methuselah. When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he begot Lamech. After the birth of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and begot sons and daughters. All the days of Methuselah came to 969 years; then he died. (Genesis 5:25-27). Methuselah is famous for two things. He lived the longest of any biblical figure. Moses lived until 120, Methuselah until 969. But Methuselah is known for nothing beyond his length of years. If he touched somebody's life, if he made the world better, if he inspired love, the Torah contains no record of it. By contrast, the composer Jonathan Larson, most famous for writing the musical Rent and dying at the age of 35 the night of its first performance, inspired this gorgeous song from Rent, sung by Leslie Odom, Jr. called Without You. (Click here for the video) The thesis is: life goes on, as it must, without you, but I am not the same without you because of the deep impact you have had on me. (Click here for lyrics) We have just left the High Holiday season with its message that we do not get to control how much time we have, we can only control what we do with the time we've got. We are now entering a month without holidays, a season of ordinary days. The most important question for us all: what do we do with our ordinary days that turn them into days of impact? What are we doing that can inspire the love of the song Without You? Who will sing that song for us, and what have we done to earn that song? In his classic When All You've Ever Wanted Isn't Enough, Harold Kushner lays out three things we can do every day (Click here for text). Hopefully, that will not be our question until 120. But asking that question now can invest our years with their greatest joy, blessing, and impact.
