It's that time of year again when team Scran cannot resist the temptation of the world's biggest arts festival. Rosalind went along earlier this week to enjoy a foodie's day out at the festival and bring you some top shows to consider if you're heading to Edinburgh this August. First up she hit C Venue for coffee, a croissant and Shakespeare for Breakfast. This show has been performed at the Edinburgh Fringe festival for 33 years. Rosalind chats to Mary Gensich, Company Manager for C Theatre and Clare Louise Roberts, one of the performers, to hear about this year's show. Then for something completely different Rosalind went to A History of Fortune Cookies performed by Sean Wai Keung. With an audience of ten this was a really intimate show where Sean shared his story about the influence of his Chinese grandparents all while baking the audience their own fortune cookies. For many the festival is all about the Fringe and the laughs, Daniel Downie definitely brought those in his whisky-soaked show Daniel Downie: Dram(a)s which was Rosalind's third show of the day.  Whilst many may start an evening at the festival with a glass of wine or 5 Rosalind chose to finish up with In Pour Taste - a wine tasting from Australian comedians Ethan Cavanagh and Sweeney Preston who have teamed up with local wine experts to produce a raucous one hour and 15 mins of entertainment (and some wine education).  Make sure to check out The Scotsman's coverage of the festivals to be right up to date with reviews and recommendations. David Pickard discusses with Ivan six things which should be better known. David Pickard studied Music at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, before starting his career as Company Manager of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Following this, David worked at the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park and was the Assistant Director for the Japan Festival (1991) before becoming Sir John Drummond's deputy at the European Arts Festival. In 1993 he was appointed Chief Executive of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment where he significantly increased the orchestra's artistic reputation and international profile, helping to establish the OAE as the pre-eminent period-instrument orchestra in the world. In 2001 he was made General Director of Glyndebourne Festival where during his tenure he created an extensive digital programme including online streaming, big-screen and cinema relays and broadened the company's audience base through specially priced performances for young people and a pioneering education programme. In November 2015, David took up the role of Director of the BBC Proms. Since then he has introduced a number of initiatives, all in support of the Proms' central mission: to bring ‘the best of classical music to the widest possible audience.' These have included an innovative series called ‘Proms at…' exploring music in new spaces, both in London and around the UK. He has introduced greater diversity among the composers, conductors and soloists showcased by the Proms - both in gender and ethnicity - and has also made youth music-making and youth audiences a major focus. He has expanded the range of genres explored in the festival to include gaming music, contemporary jazz, world music and, in 2018, a twenty minute animated light show projected onto the external and internal façades of the Royal Albert Hall, accompanied by a new work for orchestra and chorus by Anna Meredith. An original founding member of DPT in 2015, Sarah Clare is a Michigan (Ypsilanti) native. After moving about the country to find the best places and ways to create live theater, she was called back home to Detroit (first figuratively, later literally). After training in both theater and voice at Hope College, she transitioned to the administrative end of art-making and received an MFA in arts administration from Wayne State University's Hilberry Theatre program, cutting her professional teeth with Breathe Art Theatre Project (with DPT cofounder Courtney Burkett), Barrington Stage Co., and New York Stage and Film. Sarah Clare acted as Managing Director of Philadelphia's Pig Iron Theatre Co. from 2008-2009 (Isabella, Pay Up!, and the Pig Iron collaboration with NYC's Public Theatre on Suzan-Lori Parks' 365 Days/365 Plays). For 13 years since then, she has worked as Company Manager (3 years) and Managing Director (10 years) of Chautauqua Theatre Co. in Western New York, where she was co-leader through two artistic leadership transitions and was the line producer for the Chautauqua Institution's innovative inter-arts collaborations, The Romeo and Juliet Project, and Go West!, which presented narratives through cohesive experiences of symphonic and vocal music, live theatre, dance, visual art, and literature. At DPT, Sarah Clare initiated the commission of Noah Haidle's Broadway-bound Birthday Candles. She was lead producer on the televised remounts of From Broadway to Obscurity (Eric Gutman) and No Child… (Nilaja Sun), in collaboration with two PBS stations, in Buffalo, NY and Detroit, MI, and with both DPT and Chautauqua Theater Co. She has acted as the lead on DPT's move to a new building, heads up strategic planning for the company, and shares artistic leadership with Sarah, Courtney, and Dominique.  Overall, she specializes in creating opportunities for artists on projects close to their hearts and bringing them before audiences who can share in and gain something from their offerings.Mentioned in this episode:Eckhart Tolle The Power of NowCourtney BurkettSarah WinklerDominique MorriseauWe See You W.A.TTCG ConferenceSCADTo submit a question, please visit http://www.speakpipe.com/theatreofothers for voice recording or submit an email to podcast@theatreofothers.com Messages may be quoted by name unless the writer stipulates otherwiseMusic credit: https://www.purple-planet.comAdditional compositions by @jack_burmeisterSupport the show

Ruth was brought up in Ireland by her dancer mother and singer and actor father, to a backdrop of golden era Hollywood musicals with some Beatles thrown in for good measure.  After watching her mother teach choreography, she went on to take ballet classes herself soon after she could walk.  Studying music at University College in Dublin, she soon discovered she didn't want to perform, and focused on the academic side of her degree.  She went for her first interview after graduating for the job of Assistant Chorus Manager at the Royal Opera House, thinking it would be good interview practice.  She not only got the job, but stayed for many years in different capacities, before taking on the Company Management role at Scottish Opera and Opera Holland Park, and working closely with Opera Rara.  As the Company Manager of the Royal Opera House, Ruth had to not only bring the artists at the house to a screeching halt in the face of the pandemic, but organise and reorganise the company in the wake of the crisis that has been devastating our industry.  Ruth chats through the highs and lows of the high-pressure environments she has worked in, and what happens when you get that emergency call from prompt corner…

When I decided to create this podcast, one of the first people I knew I wanted to sit down with was Katie Zanca. If you are looking for some professional lessons they don't always teach in school, you're considering a career in casting, you want to start going to therapy, or all of the above, this conversation is truly for you. Katie proves to us through stories from her own career that empowerment is free and that we all have the ability to reach our fullest potential. It won't always be easy and while the growth can often be uncomfortable, it is so incredibly worth it.As the Director of Worldwide Casting, Katie Zanca oversees the audition processes for all talent in every production of Magic Mike Live across the globe. Katie started her career as a musical theatre performer, but quickly transitioned to roles off the stage. Katie has worked as the Company Manager of Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theatre of North Carolina, as a Talent Representative at Door 24 Entertainment working with artists in film, television, and theatre, and eventually found her true calling in casting at Binder Casting. With Binder, she helped to cast projects on Broadway/National Tours (Disney's The Lion King, In Transit, White Christmas, Sister Act) Off-Broadway (NYCC's Encores! Series, Chick Flick, Trip of Love) and regionally across the USA. As a former performer herself, Katie is passionate about helping artists realize their potential. Raised in Connecticut, she received a BFA in Music Theatre from Elon University. She is based in Brooklyn, NY.

You been busy?" That same old thing we all seem to get into when we're in the back of a taxi. "This show is designed to offer snippets of life in Shrewsbury. There's nothing more humbling to hear, than a story of a taxi driver who has risen through the ranks to eventually become a company manager for a brand new company. Known affectionately as Frosty the Showman; impresario John Frost has been at the pinnacle of Musical Theatre in Australia for several decades. The Gordon Frost Organisation contributes much of the commercial product that traverses stages around the country. His productions have garnered a swag of local awards as well as two Tony Awards for musicals on the Broadway stage.Frost grew up in Adelaide and harboured dreams of a showbiz life. He’d stage backyard entertainments with his doting Aunt Mary playing Eliza to his Henry Higgins. He's been stage-struck ever since. It was a childhood influenced by a regular diet of television and Hollywood movies. A dalliance with amateur theatre in his teens provided him with the realisation that he was suited more to backstage. He left school at 15 and began his career as a dresser on the J.C. Williamson’s production of Mame. Frost had found what he wanted to do and the young apprentice garnered enormous knowledge working his way through a succession of roles - Wardrobe Master, Office Assistant to Kenn Brodziak, Stage Manager, Company Manager and Actors Agent - each experience informing his prized accomplishment as Producer. In 1983 John Frost co-founded the Gordon Frost Organisation with Ashley Gordon. They took a lease on the University of Sydney’s Footbridge Theatre and presented a succession of shows that would demonstrate to the pair the precarious nature of ‘the business’. Shows emanating from The Footbridge included Women Behind Bars (starring June Bronhill), ‘Night Mother (starring Jill Perryman and June Salter), Agnes of God and a ‘just sensational ‘ production of Jerry’s Girls. It’s a riveting story and John speaks frankly and with great wit, about his journey and what is involved in being Frosty the Showman; producing commercial product, increasing the profile of musical theatre and delivering a magical experience to audiences.

“No matter how you understand your content, your users will tell you how well you don’t understand it” this quote is from Andy Hunt, Manager, Digital Innovation Lab at the Hershey Company - this week on the #ShinyNewObject podcast. Andy is making innovation happen at Hershey with his own hands - telling us that “I build things.” His advice to those getting into the innovation game is that we should learn to make things ourselves - “all the tools are out there.” But it’s not all nuts and bolts for Andy. He is adamant that the role of the innovation person is to make technology “relatable”. Talking about innovation is not enough. His view is that “PowerPoint decks don’t do it - we are in a show and tell environment.” Andy’s shiny new object is ‘AI for Internal Comms’ and Hershey have explored this through voice and chatbots. These projects have taught him not to assume how his audience thinks. He tells us that “you can’t schedule enough user testing periods.” Andy’s innovation mission at Hershey’s is create a “deeper connection with consumers” by looking at technology that is two to four years out.   I loved hearing that “innovation is a company wide initiative” at the Hershey Company and maybe that’s why it’s been around for one hundred and twenty years.   Andy is a dude. This interview was a treat. Enjoy.
