Siobhan Davies is a contemporary dance pioneer who has witnessed and contributed to the development of the British dance scene over the past 50 years. Having originally studied visual arts, Siobhan discovered contemporary dance in 1967, when she began to take classes with the Contemporary Dance Group, which later became London Contemporary Dance Theatre. In 1969, she started performing with the company, and by the seventies she was choreographing for them. Siobhan has had many different chapters of her career, from joining forces with Richard Alston and Ian Spink to form Second Stride, one of the most influential independent British contemporary dance companies of the 1980s, to taking a year's sabbatical in America on a Fulbright Arts Fellowship, from working as an Associate Choreographer for Rambert to founding the Siobhan Davies Dance Company. Siobhan's work is marked by her interest in presenting dance in visual art and gallery spaces, and throughout her career she has worked with venues including Victoria Miro Gallery, the ICA, the Whitworth Gallery, Glasgow Museum of Modern Art, and Turner Contemporary. In the mid 2000s, she opened Siobhan Davies Studios in South London, a base for her research that has become a place not only of dance activity but of traffic between dance and other fields. Two years ago, Siobhan stepped down as artistic director of Siobhan Davies Studios. Since then she's been busy with various personal projects, from being appointed as an Associate Professor at C-dare Coventry University to traveling as an artist to the High Arctic with the Environmental organization Cape Farewell. She's also created ‘Transparent', a film that unravels the complex processes underpinning her 50 years of work in dance. Premiered at the BFI London Film Festival, the film is going to be shown at Sadler's Wells on 20th April and will be followed by a post show talk. Ahead of the screening, I couldn't wait to speak to Siobhan to find out what we can expect, reflect on her extensive career, and discuss her plans for the future.

Scott sits down with a former student, Alyssa Carol, for a heartfelt and lovely conversation about Alyssa's pathway towards higher education at the University of Michigan's famed Musical Theatre BFA and making her Broadway debut as an original Broadway cast member in Andrew Lloyd Webber's brand new musical, BAD CINDERELLA. And while in many ways Alyssa is living what from the outside looks to be a Broadway Cinderella story… she comes to the podcast to share her personal journey to this moment to highlight the fact that the road to Broadway is rarely glamorous or picture book perfect, but this journey is often a deeply satisfying, valuable and artistically illuminating process. Alyssa Carol is a performing artist originally from Orange County, CA. She grew up dancing, singing and acting and eventually attended the Orange County School of the Arts to study Musical Theatre from 7th-12th grade where she discovered a deeper sense of her artistry and the cathartic nature of performing. And I had the privilege to be her conservatory director for her junior and senior year at OCSA. She is currently completing her last semester at The University of Michigan in their BFA Musical Theatre program remotely from NYC… so that she could join the original cast as a swing of the Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's BAD CINDERELLA covering 9 tracks and triumphantly made her Broadway debut during previews on March 9th. At the University of Michigan she was featured in productions of The House of Bernarda Alba, Hair, Michael McElroy's Sonnets, Soliloquies and Soul, The Wild Party; she made her professional debut as the female swing in The Ogunquit Playhouse staging of The Nutty Professor; At OCSA, she played Charity in SWEET CHARITY, Olive in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, was in the ensemble of OCSA's productions of Jasper in Deadland, Footloose as an Associate Choreographer (with Emily Baggerly) on an epic production of EVITA. On a personal note, Alyssa is a light in this world and a ferocious quadruple threat - actor, dancer, singer AND creative/maker. She is a wonderful example of leading with the love of an artform, and practicing that abundant mindset at every turn of the creative process. In this episode, we talk about the many facets of her talent and creative interest; what helped her be her authentic self in audition settings; How she decided to say YES to a school like University of Michigan; And a touching story of being guided by the legendary Broadway dancer and choreographer, Ann Reinking, just weeks before her passing. There aren't many choreographers in the musical theatre industry who have had as much success as Stephen Mear CBE. Since the late 1990s, Stephen Mear's helped reshape some of the Musical Theatre's most beloved works such as 'Anything Goes', 'Gypsy' and 'Sweet Charity' into pieces for today's audiences. Along the way, he has also brought home 3 Olivier Awards as well as developed a reputation for being one of the West End's most revered choreographers. Since his debut, Stephen has also worked extensively on Broadway, across the United States, in Europe as well as in the U.K. regions with a long run as Associate Choreographer for Chichester Festival Theatre. He continues to be a strong champion for the Musical Theatre industry and has become a patron for numerous performing arts schools including Laine Theatre Arts and The Brighton Academy, encouraging young people to get involved in Musical Theatre. With 'Mary Poppins' now firmly reopened in the West End and featuring his and Sir Matthew Bourne OBE's Olivier Award winning choreography, Stephen Mear was kind enough to sit down with us to share his insights into the industry and working with some of the industry's top talent. He also tells us his thoughts on the recent backlash against his 'Mary Poppins' collaborator legendary producer: Sir Cameron Mackintosh. It's a fascinating listen as he makes it clear that talent must always come first whilst remaining a faithful supporter of diversity causes. Moreover, Stephen Mear reasserts his passion for working especially after a year of theatre closures and we look forward to what else has to offer in the years ahead.

Originally from Belgium, Stina Quagebeur is a First Artist and Associate Choreographer with English National Ballet. During her time with the company, she has performed in works by acclaimed choreographers, some of her favourite experiences being creating the role of Myrtha in Akram Khan's Giselle and dancing in William Forsythe's In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated. Stina created her first mainstage work, Nora, in 2019 as part of ENB's She Persisted, their second programme dedicated to encouraging and celebrating female choreographers. Ahead of the performance of her work Hollow, a duet exploring depression, as part of ENB's Solstice Programme at the Southbank Centre, I thought it was a great opportunity to talk to Stina about her route into choreography, telling female narratives through dance, and what it's like to have the dual role of dancer and choreographer in one of the U.K.'s leading ballet companies.

Today's guest, Missy Clayton is a firm believer that self care comes in many forms. She believes; communication is an extremely important part of self care. Both internally and with any form of relationship be it a romantic relationship, friendship, or just talking with any random person. "Thriving in her 30s", Missy found that communication has only helped her mental state throughout all of this. Normalizing opening up and being vulnerable has been a top priority throughout this past year. I'm sure many of us can agree. Missy and I both have our loved ones in uniform. We discuss the trials and tribulations of what that is like on our self care habits. Waking up every morning finding the joy in how we can spend our day. How we can make it ours and make it through the funks when our loved ones are away. Born and raised in NH, Missy had the privilege of growing up in the Palace Theatre's youth program on top of being a full time sports girl! When she got the itch to pursue musical theatre as a career, she waited a year after high school to perform in the professional season at The Palace and then moved to NYC to study Musical Theatre and Dance at The American Music and Dramatic Academy. Most recently, Missy has served as Dance Captain, Associate Choreographer, Youth Coordinator and Production Assistant at the American Music Theatre! Internationally, Missy danced for the NBA tour in China during the spring of 2018. Commercially, she danced for the Ru Paul's Drag Race All Stars season 3 reunion show! Some favorite Regional credits: Rock of ages (young groupie), Legally Blonde (Brooke Wyndham), Cabaret (Helga), Hairspray (Brenda), Chicago (Liz), 42nd Street (Lorraine), ACL (Kristine). Missy has always had a passion for the fitness industry. From Barry's boot camp, training for a marathon, or taking a restorative yoga class, fitness has always been a contestant part of Missy's adulthood. Amanda Kloot's always reminds us that it is a blessing if we can move our bodies everyday, and Missy reminds herself of that every morning, to get up and get moving! Thank you for listening to this episode. We hope you enjoy it! A note about this week's episode: This is a recorded conversation from Broadway Podcast Network HQ at BroadwayCon 2020. Stay tuned for Part 2 of this conversation where we'll talk about her role as Associate Choreographer for the Broadway production of SIX. Eliza Ohman is a New York City based performer and the US Associate Choreographer for SIX: The Musical. Most recently seen in the Chita Rivera Award winning Original Broadway Company of King Kong and previously Dance Captain and Universal Swing in Hamilton: An American Musical on Broadway, she had the great privilege of working closely with the original creative team and assisted in setting Hamilton’s 2nd National Tour. As Dance Captain she taught new company members the show, ran rehearsals for the offstage company, and assisted in the auditions for all four North American productions. Eliza began dancing at the age of 3 in her home state of Colorado. She trained at a local studio and toured nationally with Prof. Robert L. Reed’s tap company the St. Louis Hoofers Club. After high school she moved to New York City where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Media, Culture, and the Arts from The King’s College and received further training from the Professional Semester Program at Broadway Dance Center. Through BDC’s program she gained representation from Clear Talent Group and booked her first NYC job in the Ensemble of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. In addition to theatre, Eliza also works commercially. Some career favorites include the Emmy award winning Fosse/Verdon (FX), The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon), Saturday Night Live (NBC), Dispatches from Elsewhere (AMC), America’s Got Talent (NBC), Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO), and more! She’s danced in a number of music videos, one of her favorites being Carly Rae Jepsen’s “I Really Like You”—a day where she spent the morning teaching Carly Rae, Tom Hanks, and Justin Bieber the choreography, and the afternoon filming outside in New York City on the coldest recorded day of 2016. Through all these experiences, Eliza has developed close relationships with award winning director/choreographers such as Andy Blankenbuehler, Thomas Kail, Marguerite Derricks, Kat Burns, Linda Haberman, Denis Jones, Noemie Lafrance, Susan Misner, and Drew McOnie. These experiences encourage Eliza to remain as diverse as possible in both her training and teaching. She’s an enthusiastic teacher who focuses on the importance of storytelling through dance. She’s taught at studios/programs around the country, but most recently at Broadway Dance Center, Marymount Manhattan College, and is a guest faculty member for Intrigue Dance Intensive. Always looking to grow as an artist, Eliza continues to train, teach, and perform in New York. Instagram - @elizaohman. Keep up with Eliza on Instagram: @elizaohman Want more of Page To Stage?! Bring It On, Hamilton, the most recent revival of CATS, the revival of Falsettos, and this season’s Head Over Heels are just a few of the credits my guests today have on their impressive resumes. Shonica Gooden made her Broadway debut in 2012 in the musical Bring It On and three years later replaced Ariana DeBose as ‘The Bullet’ in the ensemble of Hamilton. Earlier this month, she was seen on the Damn Yankees episode of the TV miniseries Fosse/Verdon. Ellenore Scott was a finalist and All-Star on the TV reality show So You Think You Can Dance? and is the Associate Choreographer for this season’s larger-than-life Broadway musical King Kong. Both women started out as concert dancers but found their way to Broadway. And this month, they find themselves in Fayetteville working on the Cape Fear Regional production of the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis. Memphis is loosely inspired on the story of Dewey Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play black music in the 1950s. Shonica stars as Felicia in this production, which Ellenore is choreographing. Also notable about this production is that for the first time in the history of the show, the character of Delray is being played by a woman. Hear what Shonica and Ellenore have to say about that, their work on Broadway, on television, and of course, working here in North Carolina. About the Guests Ellenore Scott is a New York City-based choreographer and performer. Scott was a finalist and All-Star on the hit television show, So You Think You Can Dance? She was the Associate Choreographer for Head Over Heels on Broadway and is also the Associate Choreographer for King Kong: The Musical. You guys, we are so excited to welcome choreographer Spencer Liff to the podcast this week. Like a lot of people, I first became aware of Spencer for his Emmy nominated work as a choreographer on the hit show 'So You Think You Can Dance--' I had no idea that he’s totally a Broadway guy! Spencer made his Broadway debut at age 11 in the musical 'Big'. He went on to appear in 'The Wedding Singer,' 'Cry Baby,' 'Equis,' and' 9 to 5', taking on more and more responsibility along the way. He was the Associate Choreographer and Dance captain for 'Cry Baby' and was the Dance Captain on 'Equis'. After hitting it big on so You Think You Can Dance, he came back to Broadway to provide the musical staging for the Neil Patrick Harris led 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch', and was then hired to choreograph the Deaf West Production of 'Spring Awakening', which ultimately transferred to Broadway earlier this season. He was recently tapped by James Lapine himself to choreograph the upcoming revival of the much loved musical 'Falsettos'. It was such a delight to spend a Sunday morning chatting with this guy.
