Today, I am so incredibly thrilled to announce the release of my interview with Pulitzer-Prize winning Broadway legend Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose new album WARRIORS, co-written with Eisa Davis, is now out on all platforms. Tune in to hear stories and insights including how WARRIORS became his “Roman Empire,” the challenges of adapting an action movie into a musical, how Twitter helped him develop HAMILTON, the hardest role to cast in IN THE HEIGHTS, how he approaches the dual roles of actor and writer, why he loves writing New York stories, working with Thomas Kail on saving the Drama Book Shop, coming back to Broadway in ALL IN, how his experiences with FOSSE/VERDON and MARY POPPINS RETURNS led to TICK, TICK…BOOM!, filming at the New York Theater Workshop during the pandemic, taking inspiration from Jonathan Larson, the phone call from John Kander that led to NEW YORK, NEW YORK, meeting Stephen Sondheim in his senior year of high school, the enduring legacy of HAMILTON, and so much more. You won't want to miss this in-depth conversation with one of theater's most brilliant writers.
RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio theatre reviews. This week Vidar is reviewing Lin-Manuel Miranda's multi award-winning cultural phenomenon that is Hamilton as the 2023/2024 touring production visited the Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre with description by Professional Audio Describers Julia Grundy and Jonathan Nash. About Hamilton: Hamilton is the story of America's Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and helped shape the very foundations of the America we know today. The score blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway – the story of America then, as told by America now. Hamilton has book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is directed by Thomas Kail, with choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire and is based on Ron Chernow's biography of Alexander Hamilton. Winner of 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, 7 Olivier Awards, the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album. With big sporting, cultural, and political events occurring all at once, Mike offers a contemplation of the nature and purpose of speculation about things that are definitely going to happen one way or the other. Plus, Thomas Kail and Lior Ashkenazi are director and actor in the Hulu series We Were The Lucky Ones, the telling of a true story about a family's nearly impossible survival during the Holocaust. We discuss how this film lands differently after October 7th, the benefits and drawbacks of an all-Jewish cast, and how Israelis and Americans react differently toward movie Nazis. Though probably not the most lighthearted series to tackle on April Fools' Day, on Today's Episode we take a closer look at Hulu's new adaptation of Georgia Hunter's 2017 bestselling novel, We Were the Lucky Ones. Starring Joey King and Logan Lerman, and directed by Thomas Kail of Hamilton fame, there's plenty of talent on both sides of the camera. With a web of family storylines spanning from Radom to Siberia and several years, we discuss how the first few episodes (Radom,' 'Lvov,' and 'Siberia') balance the historical events with the personal tales of survival. Tune in and Enjoy!

HAMILTON COMPOSER: Lin-Manuel Miranda LYRICIST: Lin-Manuel Miranda BOOK: Lin-Manuel Miranda DIRECTOR: Thomas Kail CHOREOGRAPHER: Andy Blankenbuehler PRINCIPLE CAST: Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), Leslie Odom Jr. (Burr), Phillipa Soo (Eliza) OPENING DATE: August 6th, 2015 CLOSING DATE: Still Playing as of this writing PERFORMANCES: +1900 SYNOPSIS: The life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton is explored from his immigration to the United States through his murder by political rival Aaron Burr. W. Jerome Stevenson argues Hamilton's significance as a twenty-first century musical which was able to maintain mass appeal to the public amid a flurry of tourist-oriented Broadway productions. Hamilton's original score and historical storyline update the structure of a traditional book musical by fusing the narrative with rap and hip hop and reimagining white figures as people of color. The Lin Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail, and Andy Blankenbuehler production set off a global revolution with its contemporary score but was later brought under scrutiny for its lack of accurate representation of Afro-Caribbean and African-American voices. W. Jerome Stevenson is an Instructor of Performance for the Helmerich School of Drama at the University of Oklahoma and served as the Producing Artistic Director of the Pollard Theatre Company in Oklahoma until 2020. Stevenson is an accomplished director and a proud member of Actor's Equity Association and serves as adjunct theatre faculty at Oklahoma City and Oklahoma Universities. Stevenson's numerous directing credits include Hairspray, Green Day's American Idiot, Crowns, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. In addition to a variety of work in radio, television, and film, Jerome was the recipient of a 2018 Oklahoma Governor Arts Award for Community Service. IN THE HEIGHTS COMPOSER: Lin-Manuel Miranda LYRICIST: Lin-Manuel Miranda BOOK: Quiara Alegria Hudes DIRECTOR: Thomas Kail CHOREOGRAPHER: Andy Blankenbuehler PRINCIPLE CAST: Robin De Jesus (Sonny), Mandy Gonzalez (Nina), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Usnavi), OPENING DATE: Mar 09, 2008 CLOSING DATE: Jan 09, 2011 PERFORMANCES: 1,184 SYNOPSIS: Washington Heights, New York is the diverse environment that holds an eclectic group of citizens. Usnavi, the show's narrator and bodega manager, observes the lives of his neighbors as they begin to forge new paths in and out of the barrio. In the Heights was the first Broadway musical to rely on rap as its primary mode of storytelling. Composer Lin Manuel Miranda first began developing the show while a student at Wesleyan University with a desire to share his perspective as a child of immigrants and emphasize a universal desire to find belonging. Devon Hunt traces In the Heights' seven year development process, collaborators Thomas Kail and Quiara Alegría Hudes, and outlines the significant cultural influences which informed the work. The musical is significant as a Latinx-authored, authentic telling of Latinx immigrant stories and its success laid the groundwork for Miranda's later artistic accomplishments. Devon Hunt is an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Oklahoma State University. His areas of research include secondary musical theatre educator training and Black contributions to early 20th-century musical theatre. Selected regional acting credits: She Loves Me (SDSU), A Chorus Line (Welk Resorts Theatre), The Producers (Moonlight Amphitheatre), and the world premiere of The Tale of Despereaux (The Old Globe/PigPen Theatre). Devon holds an MFA in Musical Theatre from SDSU and an MM in piano performance from the University of Maryland. He is an Equity Membership Candidate and a proud member of the Musical Theatre Educators' Alliance. COVID-19 has created a unique dearth in the film industry. We've all been seeking something to look forward to this summer and Disney+ provided a glimmer last week by releasing a film version of Hamilton captured live from Broadway in 2016. In a sea of theater at home releases that leave the world questioning what constitutes the very definition of film, entertainment is on the cusp of revolution and sets a stage for Lin-Manuel Miranda's groundbreaking musical to further demonstrate the importance and power of deals with titans in the ongoing battles for content on their proprietary streaming services. The Film Board couldn't resist gathering to commemorate American independence with this innovative exploration of history. We've talked before about the relevance of historical accuracy in film portrayals. The issue garners additional talking points in the realm of musical theater, so we'll address it in a new way on this show and we'll attempt to place this filmed version of stage success alongside other movie depictions of Broadway's greats. This is definitely a different way to view either medium, so it's important to weigh how it channels the original and holds up on screen. Kathryn and Tug tell the story of the time they hung out in Larry Bird's office and talked about wine. Tug made his Broadway debut in 2012 portraying Larry Bird in the play MAGIC/BIRD directed by Thomas Kail, and they connected after the completed run of the show. Kathryn and Tug reminisce on how wine served as a catalyst to a very fun, warm conversation. Later in the episode, Kathryn discusses why she likes to taste wines for Esters before she ever meets the winemaker. Tug names two musical artists he's been listening to under quarantine, and Kathryn gives out a rare music recommendation as well! They also fawn over a delicious, affordable Chardonnay from Burgundy. Alex Lacamoire is back to blow our minds once again which is crazy because I'm still not over last week's episode. This week we dive into Lin-Manuel Miranda's favorite arrangements and how Alex came to make them: Yorktown (YAASSSS!!!), Wait For It (SRSLY YOU'RE NOT READY), One Last Time ("f@%k you strings!"), and That Would Be Enough (Alex brought something that even Lin hasn't heard yet - yes, there were tears). Oh! AND! Alex plays an exclusive track you can't hear anywhere else called "Hamilton Finale Idea" and while neither Alex, LMM, nor Thomas Kail remember exactly what it was for I can promise you that your world will never be the same. Hamilton director Tommy Kail is back again this week and I am reminded, by Tommy, that no one thinks I'm laid back. In this episode Tommy talks about the casting process including how Hamilton has the feeling of a family reunion, and he gives his opinion on what happens in the very last moment of the show. In non-Hamilton related topics, Tommy tells the story of how he and Lin-Manuel Miranda ended up in the Sex and the City movie, his experience directing Grease LIVE!, and why "Mona Lisa" by Slick Rick is a defining song for him. That's Thomas as in KAIL. YES! TOMMY. KAIL. CAME. OVER. It was super fun and we are naturally at 1.5x speed. Tommy tells me all about the upcoming Hamilton exhibition in Chicago, opening this November, and how the job of a director changes (or doesn't) as a production evolves. We bond over It's a Wonderful Life, Tommy reminds cast members who are alums of The Hamilcast that he *does* hear the stories they tell, I teach him the correct names of Hamilton songs, and Tommy confirms that he is not in fact Alex Lacamoire. OR IS HE??? He's not, you guys, they just both have really fantastic hair. Have I mentioned that Hamilton and In The Heights director and all around excellent human Thomas Kail hung out with me for a few hours? Because it still feels ridiculous.
