Yosef is set as Viceroy of Egypt. He is presented by Pharaoh as the very symbol of Egypt. All is going well for him when suddenly...his brothers show up. He must address historic rifts and unresolved conflicts and consider who he is in light of all that he finds around him. This parasha is always read during Hanuka. In this episode we look at the complementary aspects of the Hanuka story with Joseph's and how it might apply to our lives.

Hanukkah's not so “Happy” as Israel's bombardment of Gaza is far too dark for even the world's largest menorah to brighten. So, I sing a Hebrew prayer for Palestine as I light the Hanukkah candles for my “Anti-Zionist Hanukkah for Palestine the Victims of Henry Kissinger” on FDR, & I tell the Hanukkah Story, noting interesting parallels between Syrian Greek King Antiochus' occupation of ancient Judea & Zionist Netanyahu's occupation of modern Palestine, +between the Maccabees & Hamas, as well as the passionate desire for OIL (olive oil or natural gas) & the urgent need for the miracle of peace, The Bonobo Way. Warning: Explicit Conversations About Politics, Culture, & S3xuality!  Capt'n Max and I also light the Hanukka, Hanuka or Chanuka (take your pick) candles for Henry Kissinger's millions of innocent victims, one of whom was my friend, the great Oscar-winning Cambodian star of “The Killing Fields,” Haing S. Ngor (RIP). And we watch former DrSusanBlock-Tv guest Rabbi Shmuley Boteach “terrified, running for [his] life” down a Tel Aviv hotel hallway, half-naked (wearing nothing but a towel), making a mockery of the thousands of Palestinians running through the rubble with nowhere to go, as Zionist bombs destroy their lives. Maria calls in on Callin to say Amen & Awomen to our Anti-Zionist Hannukah prayer for Palestine as well as Haing S. Ngor (“The Killing Fields” is one of her favorite films), and she sings two more SUZY award-winning songs.  We also share sexy, lefty memories of many sizzling “Hot Wax Hanukkah” bacchanals in Bonoboville. Stefi továbbra is a francia állampolgárságért küzd, míg Kristóf olasz adószámot igényel, így Derdák Andrisnak alkalma nyílik beavatni bennünket a követségi berkek működésébe. Átbeszéltük kinek mit hozott a mi, vagyis kultúrák, ünnepek, Mikulás postaláda, Hanuka gyertyák, csillogó szárnyú angyal, félmeztelen férfiak Mikulás sapkában, téli orvosi ügyelet, karantén, karácsonyfa irodaszerből, és mèg arra is fény derül mit esznek a franciák bejgli helyett. A templomok, tornyok, harangok, után politikáról, tàrsadalomról is szó kerül. Pénzosztás, infláció, politikusokra leselkedő jogi következmények, pedagógusok sztrájk joga, "agymosás" a jövő èv lehetsèges vesztesei. When is making music about community survival? For Ladino singer Sarah Aroeste, her role is as much as a cultural preservationist. Although she was raised in suburban New Jersey, Sarah's family heritage goes back to the town of Monastir in Macedonia, where 98% of the Jewish population were killed during the Holocaust, and beyond that to the Iberian peninsula, where Jews were expelled during the Spanish Inquisition. Since establishing herself as a professional musician, Sarah has made it her mission to contribute to a thriving modern library of songs in Ladino, the unique language of the Jews in this region. During our conversation, Jack and Sarah discuss how she is creating opportunities for young people to connect to their Sephardic heritage through not just music, but also literacy and food; and Sarah explains why her work pushing back against cultural assimilation is particularly poignant during the festival of Hanukkah. Songs and tunes from some of the artists who particularly impressed me during 2022. Many of them played at The Rogue, some of them played at Summer festivals in BC and Alberta, and a few played at concerts around Vancouver. I added some new releases, one or two songs for Hanuka and the Solstice, a bit of Hawaiian exotica, and a few performers coming to The Rogue over the next few weeks.

Children in foster care may have only bad memories of the holidays. Maybe they remember it as a time where Santa always forgot their house. Maybe they remember their mom being stressed about not being able to afford Christmas. Perhaps they did have memorable Christmas but their special Christmas didn't include a tree or gifts but a special trip to Waffle House every year. There was once a year time to eat out and everyone was happy. Maybe they recognized a different holiday. Maybe they were Jehova's witnesses or celebrated Hanuka or Kwanza. So now that we have all these possibilities let's go into how we can show up for any kid during the holiday season.
