We explore friendship and emotional well-being through conversations with two sets of special guests who share powerful insights on maintaining happiness even when others aren't kind.• Emma and Ada demonstrate how friendship can thrive despite attending different schools by making intentional time for each other• Best friends don't need to be exclusive – having other friendships is healthy and necessary• The Fishmans share how their popular "Bucket Filler" books originated from Nechama's kindergarten bullying experience• Everyone has an invisible emotional bucket that fills with good feelings when full and empties when sad• When someone is mean, it's because their bucket is empty – understanding this helps you not take it personally• Filling others' buckets through kindness automatically fills your own bucket too• Being "bully-proof" means staying happy despite others' unkindness• Finding people who make you feel good is more important than forcing yourself into unfriendly groups• Simple acts like smiles and compliments can significantly impact someone's day• Parents should work through schools rather than directly contacting bullies' parents

Rosie was always told her red hair was a curse, but she never believed it. She often dreamed what it would look like under a white veil with the man of her dreams by her side. However, her life takes a harrowing turn in 1944 when she is forced out of her home and sent to the most gruesome of places: Auschwitz. Upon arrival, Rosie's head is shaved and along with the loss of her beautiful hair, she loses the life she once cherished. Among the chaos and surrounded by hopelessness, Rosie realizes the only thing the Nazis cannot take away from her is the fierce redhead resilience in her spirit. When all of her friends conclude they are going to heaven from Auschwitz, she remains determined to get home. She summons all of her courage, through death camps and death marches to do just that. The Redhead of Auschwitz: A True Story (Amsterdam Publishers, 2021), written by Nechama Birnbaum in honor of her grandmother, is as full of life as it is of death. It is about the intricacies of Jewish culture that still exist today and the tender experiences that are universal to all humanity. It is a story about what happens when we choose hate over love. Daily Bitachon
A Time to Cry

Daily Bitachon

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 30, 2025

Welcome to our daily bitachon class. As our community is reeling from the tragedies that occurred on Shabbat , I'd like to leave our Haggadah discussion for the day. There's a story that's told over that a skit or a play about a certain tragic event during the times of the Holocaust was shown, and people were extremely moved. They all cried and were very jarred from the play. Somebody asked the Brisker Rav , why it was that when people heard about the Holocaust, and how six million Jews died, they were not bawling and crying, but they were bawling and crying from this small skit of what happened. Rav Brisker answered that if you have a very large piano that you're trying to get it into the house, as much you turn and twist, the piano won't get in. But if you have something smaller, you can get it in. This is similar to our brains, which are made in such a way that it has a certain capacity to hold things, and certain things, it just can't hold. Something of with the magnitude of the Holocaust can't be held, but when a smaller snip of a larger tragedy comes by a person, they're able to hold it and process it and that causes the emotions to flow. And when a tragedy of the magnitude where a mother and two children are killed in such a sudden way, the term is used Alah Mavet beChaloneinu/Death has come through our window. The Rabbanim explain that when someone comes into a house, they usually knock on the door. That's the regular way of doing things. Coming through the window means you snuck in. So Alah mavet bechaloneinu/Death came through the window means there was no warning. There was no sickness. Someone was taking a walk on a Shabbat afternoon with their family, and this came out nowhere, and something like that is just too big to process. It's too big to figure out, especially in the early stages, when people are looking for answers. But there really is no answer. It's really just a time for emotion and crying. The Mishnah in Pirkei Avot , Perek 4 , Mishnah 18 tells us Rav Shimon ben Elazar says וְאַל תְּנַחֲמֶ נּוּ בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁמֵּתוֹ מֻטָּל לְפָנָיו / Al tenachamenu B'shaah shemeto mutal lefanav / Do not comfort someone when the dead is still lying there. Rabbenu Yonah explains that because at this point in time, trying to comfort the person is just going to cause anger, and cause the person to say things he doesn't want to say. The Sefer Midrash Shemuel says more than that, B'vadai yimna milhitnachem . He will for sure refuse to be comforted, to accept the will of God. If anything, the person might say improper statements. Nechama means comfort . But as we've said in the past, nechama also means to have a different look at things . Rashi says vayeinachem means God looked at it differently. Nachum Ish Gamzu , said Gamzu l'tova , and the root of his name is Nachum , which we call a reframe , But there are times when there's no place for a reframe. It's too raw and too big for a reframe, and at those times, there is nothing to be said. That's why, quite often Rabbis are put in the position to answer the question, What's going on here ? In other words, Rabbi , reframe this for me. And the answer is, Right now is not a time for that. It's not a time for looking for answers. It's a time to cry. It's a time to stay with this shock and the emotion of what happened and process it and see if it can somehow get inside of you. A lot of times when we're looking for those answers, we're trying to get rid of that uncomfortable feeling of sadness, of confusion, because it's too hard to deal with. So answer it for me. But it's not the time. The sefer Mili DeAvot on that same Mishnah in Pirkei Avot brings a proof from Hashem. He quoted the Yalkut Shimoni in Yeshayah , where it says in Yeshayah 22:12, Hashem calls out to the angels to cry, to bemoan that the Bet HaMikdash was destroyed. And it says Bikshu malachim l'nachamo , the angels wanted to comfort God, V'lo ratza lehitnachem / And God did not want to be comforted. And it goes on to say, Al ta'itzu l'nachameni / Do not try, don't push yourselves not to give Me comfort . It's not the time. That's my little thought for today. I don't feel it's the right time for people to start looking for answers or reframes or comfort. It's too early. It's too raw. It's a time to sit with that emotion of sadness. And although it may sound like it, I'm not coming from a therapeutic approach. This is a Mishnah in Pirkei Avot based on Rishonim . Now, if it sounds like it rings from the world of therapy, that's because Torah was here before therapy, and there's a time for mourning and there's a time for crying. And as uncomfortable it may be to sit with these emotions of sadness and questions, and whatever it may be, that's really what one is supposed to be doing right now. We don't like to cry, but it's a time to cry.

With all eyes on the conflict in Isreal, Lebanon and Gaza, it can be easy to sink into despair witnessing the endless stream of news stories of violence and devastation. However, there are some who are like lights in the darkness, spreading peace and love at the center of the strife.    We are so honored to have one of those people on our podcast, Nechama Shaina, an expressive arts therapist originally from the Chabad community in the Bay Area of California who currently resides in Israel with her two teenage children. She has a background in clinical psychology and uses dance, drama and visual arts in her therapy. She has been playing an active role in healing those who have been so horribly affected by the current conflict there including giving hands-on treatments for the Kibbutz Be'eri survivors of the October 7th attack where Hamas-led terrorists killed 101 people in that kibbutz alone. She also organizes healing retreats for the grieving Druze women who lost their children during the Hezbollah attack on the soccer field in Majdal Shams this past summer.  Speaking with Nechama, we were in tears listening to how she brings her life journey of creativity, her passion for the sacred feminine and her deep knowledge of the Jewish tradition to anyone who has need allowing those she treats the space to heal on the level of mind, body, heart and soul.  She is a true pioneer, and her diverse background puts her in the unique position to be of great service at this particular time in Israel's history. We feel like we got a glimpse into what it is really like to be there now at the center of the conflict, and surprisingly, miraculously, it was a glimpse of hope.  Meditation Without Borders is currently raising funds to go to Isreal in 2025 in collaboration with Nechama Shaina to teach Vedic meditation to the women and mothers in Isreal of various backgrounds who are most effected by the current conflict. This evening we discuss the shift in mood from mourning and fasting on Tisha B'Av to this coming Shabbat of Nechama (consolation), focusing on a different way of what we hope all mourners will reach, as expressed by Rabbi Leo Jung. We investigate the curious placement of a Mezuzah on our doorways, as explained by Rabbi Yosef Rimon. And we analyze how many words are in our primary statement of belief in One God, and what we mean when we say Mazal Tov at a wedding. This morning we discuss the Nechama (consolation) promised by this Shabbat, Shabbat Nachamu. We learn from God's message to the prophet Isaiah how we can lift up and comfort another by believing in them even when they don't believe in themselves. Is Moshiach escapism or is it a reality that we set the stage for? How do we channel the pain of our current experience into a strong boundary against evil? Today I'm honored to have back on the show: former guest, translator, former therapist, entrepreneur, survivor, overcomer, visionary, and another spectacular male survivor speaking up to share his story: Israel Sykes! The first time Israel was on, he was joined by Israeli survivor, Nechama Te'ema and he was not only an incredible support system for Nechama, but he made that interview possible by also helping translate Nechama's story so it could be heard in English. That episode was one of the most ground-breaking interviews I've had the opportunity to do as a podcast host and I can't thank Israel enough for making that interview possible!Born in Baltimore, Israel dealt with both bi-polar disorder and child sexual abuse in his life which resulted in him on the spectrum of dissociative disorders. After not finding therapists who were able to identify either of these issues and help him heal, and having been trained himself as a family therapist, I developed my own healing method based on automatic drawing and the deliberate taking back of projections - and through this process his unconscious shared with him many incidents of abuse. He has so far discovered that none of these instances were in his family, but has a range of other setting where abuse took place including a synagogue, Hebrew school, boat trip to Israel, and a summer camp in Israel. He believes he is being protected from uncovering additional layers. In Israel's training, there was no mention of dissociative disorders, and MPD was considered so rare that students were unlikely to meet such a client. After numerous MPD clients came his way, he found them to be amazing - and in meeting the challenges they posed, he went through numerous transformations of his own consciousness. It was in fact this work that opened the gates to the memories of his own childhood trauma. It also led to efforts to open a recovery center that would highlight the contributions of survivors to one another's healing. It would be many years before this vision would be implemented in Israel by another survivor. For numerous reasons, Israel left the practice of therapy in 1996 and brought he insights to bear in social change work in the area of mental health and disabilities. These have been documented in numerous articles and books that he has co-authored. Over a period of over 20 years he has developed - together with a colleague named Victor Friedman, an approach to individual and social development called “Self-in-Field Action Research”. This work is grounded in the work on field theory initiated by the social science pioneer, Kurt Lewin, who died in 1947. Self-in-Field Actions Research is currently being implemented and developed in partnership with Dr. Alfredo Ortiz at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio Texas, and Israel and Dr. Ortiz are in the process of writing a book based on these efforts.CONNECT WITH ISRAEL:Email: israelsykes1@gmail.comCONNECT WITH EMMA & THE IMAGINATION:Emma's Substack: (1) Emma's Substack | Emma Katherine | SubstackEMAIL: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.com   All links: Emma Katherine on Direct.meBUY ME A COFFEE: Emma Katherine is Artist (buymeacoffee.com)Support the show

It is about the intricacies of Jewish culture that still exist today and the tender experiences that are universal to all humanity: family, coming of age, and first love. It is a story that celebrates believing in yourself no matter the odds. This is a story about the little redheaded girl who thought she could, and so she did.

Today we have two brave survivors who are coming on to share a very important, relevant and horrifying testimony that takes place across the world in the country of Israel. Today's show will be different as our featured guest, survivor Nechama Te'ena, doesn't speak English! To help translate her story, we are also joined by survivor Israel Sykes who is native to America and currently lives in Israel.-Nechama, 39, was born in Hebron, Israel to her parents Menahem and Rivkah, in an extended family of Orthodox Jews who love and settled in the land of Israel. Her mother gave birth to her at the early age of 16, very unusual in Israel. She believes that at a very young age her mother was a victim of trauma-based mind control and was cultivated for an active role in an organization whose long-term goal was the destruction of Israel from within. She is the oldest of 9 children, two of whom died mysteriously at an early age. She remembers having been abused since the age of 4. She remembers her mother behaving harmfully towards her two younger brothers at the behest of a powerfulrabbi in Israel named Zvi Tau. This happened  to one baby brother when she was four years old, and then to a second when she was ten. This second time she was very aware of what was happening, and she screamed and called for help. Since that time both her mother and the rabbi began to abuse her (her father was never part of the abuse).Nechama was a witness to the organization's rituals that took place in an empty building next door to her home. Rituals included fire, walking around an altar, calls of Heil Hitler, swastikas, terrifying chants, abuse of cats, and sucking bones. She was also abused during these rituals, including rape. One time, for example, they put her over a small bonfire and threatened to burn her.About 12 years ago Nehama gave birth to a girl (her fifth child), and it was then that she began to recover memories. About a year and a half ago she realized that she had to go public with the story that she had been raped by this powerful and highly respected rabbi. Otherwise her life would be at risk, as it was becoming increasingly clear to her abusers that she was increasingly out of their control. She figured that if her story were known to the public it would be impossible to kill her without raising suspicion. So Nehama went through a process of sharing her memories with hersiblings and father, all of whom have become staunch supporters. When a television documentary was cancelled at the last minute, she posted her story on Facebook and called people to join her in weekly demonstrations in front of the Knesset, which have continued to this day. Since that first step she has become a fearless leader and advocate for survivors and children, and a magnet for other survivors of similar abuse, many by the same rabbi. One year ago, Israel Sykes was exposed to the activism of a religious Jewish woman from Hebron named Nechama Te'ena, who on Facebook and in weekly demonstrations before the Israeli parliament accused a powerful and highly influential rabbi of murdering two of her siblings when they were in their first year, and of having raped her repeatedly. Nehama and her family attracted a growing number of supporters until, out of fear that family members were in danger of "quiet" assassinations, they held a press conference in which they accused the rabbi, who had come to Israel from Holland in the 1950's, of being a Nazi with connections to Mengele. Because of Israel's prior experiences, he had no doubt that such things were possible, so he stuck by her. From this point the family downplayed the Nazi part of the story and focused on the sexual abuse, and support was rebuilt. There was a serious police investigation, and an indictment is being considered.EMAIL ISRAEL: israelsykes1@gmail.comSupport the show
