Hey there, ‘80s fans! Welcome back to Throwback Thursday – Return to the '80s edition! It's that time of year again—March Madness! But we're not talking about basketball here. Oh no, we're diving into our very own Return to the '80s March Madness music tournament!
One-Time VP & EP of MTV News, and The All-Time King of VO, Jim Fraenkel, takes us from the driver's seat of his Picasso Pizza delivery days and his stint at the legendary Geffen Record (where he was nearly cast in Nirvana's “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video), to his nearly two-decade run at MTV News. We'll travel with Jim from interviewing NSYNC in Orland, Florida, to covering Matthew Shepard's murder in Laramie, Wyoming, and get lost in Harlem at 3am with a very-pregnant Sandra Bernhard. We'll listen to R.E.M. rehearse, watch Kurt and Courtney cuddle, and feel all the feels at a private dinner with His Royal Badness.
Planet LP host Ted Asregadoo and Popdose writer Keith Creighton are inching closer to the end of the year with the November New Music Report. This episode is jam-packed with some stellar music recommendations just in time for the holidays. Segment One: The Big Album It's Prince! Known at various times as The Purple One, Christopher, His Royal Badness, The Artist, or Jamie Starr, Prince was at the top of his game between 1980 and 1987 with an impressive music output that few in the music world could match. Why? Because of The Vault. A prolific writer, Prince vaulted roughly 8,000 songs. In 1991, after a series of lackluster albums, Prince released “Diamonds and Pearls” with his new backing band, the New Power Generation. The result was his fifth (and final) #1 hit in the US with “Cream,” a #3 hit with the title track, and two top 20 hits with “Gett Off” and Money Don't Matter 2 Night.” Overall, “Diamonds and Pearls” was an absolute commercial success for Prince. On October 27, 2023, Sony released a super deluxe version with three CDs of vaulted tracks, a double live album, a remaster of the original record, and a disc with singles and different mixes. That's a lot of music, and Ted and Keith break it all down into digestible bits to highlight what's brilliant about the super deluxe edition, what's good, and what misses the mark. Segment Two: New Music Releases The Transcanada Highwaymen's “Explosive Hits Vol #1 is mostly a carefully curated album of cover songs popular in the 1970s. These are Mellow and Radio Gold songs sung by a supergroup consisting of Moe Berry from The Pursuit of Happiness, Chris Murphy from Sloan, Craig Morthey from Odds, and Steven Page formerly of the Barenaked Ladies, but has gone on to a fantastic solo career. Featured songs include their cover of Andy Kim's “Rock Me Gently, and “Which Way You Goin' Billy” by The Poppy Family. Samples of both songs are embedded in this episode. Lol Tolhurst (former drummer from The Cure), Budgie (from Siouxsie & The Banshees), and producer Jackknife Lee have created a cinematic mindscrew of an album entitled “Los Angles.” Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark are back with what will likely be the final album of their career, and boy what a way to go out! Nowhere on the record are songs that sound like their biggest US hit, “If You Leave.” Rather, as Keith says, this is a soundtrack for the end of the world. Ted compares “Bauhaus Staircase” to Tears for Fears' “The Tipping Point” for its strength, its familiarity at times, and the satisfying way it's all put together. Duran Duran is back with Dance Macabre, a Halloween-theme mashup of covers, updated obscure deep cuts, and some originals. Also, guitarist Andy Taylor returns to the group, and so does the drummer of 17 years with the band, Warren Cuccrullo. If you want to go on a journey with a musician who is a bit of an acquired taste, give Christian Kjellvander a try. “Hold Your Love Still” may not be for everyone, but once you become familiar with Kjellvander's voice, you'll find this record mesmerizing — as you will hear. Nat Jay's latest EP, “Turns Out It's Not The End” is one of Keith's favorites this year. Comparing her to an outlier star to Taylor Swift's galaxy-consuming supernova, Jay's song “Something More” could have been included in the new Hunger Games soundtrack — and you'll be able to hear why. Shplang! has been on the music scene for almost three decades, and is part of the International Pop Overthrow scene. Their latest song, “Understood” is featured in this episode. Segment Three: Stream It Before You Buy It Quick hit recommendations. "Pretty Vicious" by The Struts “Telephone Line” by Juliana Hatfield “New Blue Sun” by Andre 3000 “Revisions of Truth” by One Square Mile “Chronicles of a Diamond” by Black Pumas “Can't Find The Brakes” by Dirty Honey “Purple Rain” by Dolly Parton “Harridan” (Live) by Porcupine Tree

Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here to get through this thing called Podcast! Electric word "Podcast" and that means talking for a mighty long time. But I'm here to tell you, there's something else...His Royal Badness! For this week's episode, Trevor brings in the Cult Classic. "Purple Rain". So hang on to your frilly blouses, cuz tonight we're gonna party like it's 1999. But don't forget to purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka!Note: Prince did not write or direct this movie. Just one of the greatest albums of all time!
When you think about the color purple, what comes to mind? The Pulitzer prize winning novel written by Alice Walker? The Spielberg directed movie that won Whoopi Goldberg an Oscar and gave the world Oprah Winfrey's famous "You Told Harpo to Beat Me" monologue? Perhaps it conjures to mind a beloved children's character - Barney the Dinosaur, Tinky Winky from the Teletubbies, Count von Count of Sesame Street or The Grimace of McDonald's fame? Or could it create a memory of the beloved decades-old children's book involving a young boy named Harold and his adventures with a crayon of said aforementioned color? Be honest - it really makes you think of Prince, doesn't it - "Purple Rain" is and always will be a true classic as His Royal Badness was a true American icon ... and his work in helping create Morris Day and the Time should always be commended. We digress ... today on The Overlap Podcast, purple reigns over the discussion because of a big life event for our boys Sid and Keith - Keith's pregnant and having Sid's baby ... er, we mean, they both recently attained a high honor within the world of jiu-jitsu by earning their purple belt (even though it clashes terribly with those white ... jiu-jitsu suits whose name we can pronounce but never remember how to properly spell). Fashion concerns aside, this marks a milestone for both our boys, as it took both of them 5 to 6 years to attain this rank, longer than it would to earn a bachelor's degree (which would be a first for Keith). You might be tempted to skip this episode ... we get the impulse, as our eyes glazed over when the topic was told to us. However, hear us out - this is actually an incredibly important episode that isn't just self-congratulatory claptrap. Our boys banter about what it took to get there - from the importance of doing the hard work to creating community and commonality, things that can be applied to more than just wrasslin' around in weird suits with clashing belts. And, as an added bonus, you get to hear multiple tales of both Sid and Keith getting choked out and becoming unconscious. We don't know about you dear listeners, but the image of choking Keith until he's unconscious is really ... just delightful for us to imagine. So turn it on, tune in and turn it up - it's Purple Week here at Overlap. Whether that's the belt they're wearing or the color of Keith's face as our hands slowly close around his windpipe ... we'll let you decide. We talk his best (and worst) albums, and construct 45-minute playlists covering his hits, his top guitar performances, and songs to make love by. What is his best five-album streak? What is his best album that no one knows about? We argue over who was the better friend to Prince, and also a quick tangent we discuss why Carlos Boozer is the ultimate jagoff. Finally, we discuss why "Come" is secretly one of Prince's greatest records (you are welcome). Tune in now!

Strangely Beautiful. Beautiful Strange. For all of his prowess in funk, rock and R&B, there are some Prince tracks that don't fit into any category. They're weird, unique, and totally Prince. Join us for a tour of His Royal Badness' more eclectic and eccentric work, including classics like “Annie Christian,” “Judas Kiss,” and “Batdance.” The late career dreamy, stream-of-consciousness track “June” is here, proving Prince can make a song about burning pasta interesting. Also an extended live version of “Forever In My Life” from the Sign O' The Times concert film.

If you're the video-watching type, you can watch this episode in full on our Facebook or Youtube channels. Book synopsis: Theresa Booker was hardly the first singer-songwriter to be inspired by His Royal Badness-but she was the most determined. Minneapolis, 1982. Dozens of young bands, playing day and night in bars and clubs across the city, dream of being noticed by the musical genius Prince, revered as a guru and a powerbroker. But when Theresa and her band, Starchild, are offered the opportunity of a lifetime-to be taken in and mentored by their idol-they soon find that there's a dark side to fame and fortune that could turn their dream into a nightmare. MPLS Sound is the ultimate love letter to the legendary Minneapolis funk-rock sound of the 1980s. Thanks as always for listening. His Royal Badness made music across virtually every genre . . . including house music? Starting with a rare remix of “Gett Off,” get ready for Prince as U have never heard him. Then pull out your lighters as we tour anthems like “Free” and “Planet Earth.”
I mean, what can you say right? The title says it all. When I think we can't be stupider, some yayhoos are like, "Hold my beer!" and make it worse. After the break I discuss some fun stuff though. The Grammy tribute to Prince was on and it was pretty great in parts. I only say that because Usher does a horrible job (as usual) of covering His Royal Badness. A few others did really really well though. I mention, again, the George Harrison tribute show in which Prince played a guitar solo, so check out this video if you've not seen it. Amazing. I've been listening to the Black Sabbath Ultimate Collection alot. In addition to playing in with "Fairies Wear Boots" at the beginning of the show, I've got some pictures here for you to check out of the gatefold with this collection. Pretty slick. "Dave" continues to be a show we're watching alot of. So great from top to bottom people. In addition to Lil' Dicky being an amazing rapper, Dave Burd is an incredible writer and actor. I'm telling you that you're missing out if you're not watching this show. Retro game emulation is a fun new hobby. If it weren't for ETA Prime, I'd be lost too. So much knowledge in this guy. And lastly, I'm trying to figure out what to do as far as a new mower. We have a pretty large back yard (like 2.5 lots) and it takes so long to mow. I'd love to know your suggestions as far as a reasonable riding mower if you have any thoughts. Drop your words to me via email, the Facebook page, Twitter, or even right here in Anchor.fm and the leave a message option. Thanks all and I'll see ya again next week. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedadsnarkpodcast/message
