Prince: Relentless Genius

Prince was perhaps one of the most accomplished, innovative and prolific artists of the last century. Through his seemingly limitless talent and electrifying performances, he transcended every genre and pushed every norm. With a catalogue of 40 studio albums, multiple film scores, not to mention a wealth of unreleased material, Prince's musical legacy is staggering. But his story is also one of inescapable contradictions. Offstage, he was softly-spoken and private - a stark contrast to the flamboyant, over-the-top artist audiences witnessed on stage. Though known for his unabashed sexuality and explicit lyrics, he espoused strict religious beliefs and even enforced a swear jar to discourage profanities around him. And despite his lifelong public shunning of any drugs or alcohol, Prince tragically passed away from an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2016 - leaving the world in disbelief.Sam Parker - CEO and Co-Founder of Attune - returns for the first time this season to tell the story of Prince Rogers Nelson, a complex genius on a relentless search for perfection. With an empathetic approach shaped by her experience as a mental health practitioner, coach and former artist manager, she explores the man behind the purple icon - and the forces that may have contributed to his shocking and devastating death. This week's ‘One for the Road' as chosen by Sam comes from The Artist himself. ‘The Beautiful Ones' is Prince's sadly unfinished autobiography - an intimate and illuminating memoir full of previously unseen photos and handwritten notes. On this episode we head back once again to 1996 to look at a band often mentioned on the pod. "Coming Up" is the third album by alternative/indie rock band Suede, released on September 16, 1996. The album marked a significant point in the band's career, following the departure of guitarist Bernard Butler, who had been a key songwriter for their first two albums. Despite the change in lineup, Suede managed to produce a commercially successful and critically acclaimed album.   Musically, "Coming Up" features a more polished sound with hooky, pop reps compared to the band's previous efforts, incorporating elements of glam rock and Brit Pop. It includes tracks like "Trash," "Beautiful Ones, "Film Star” & “Saturday Night," which became some of the band's most recognisable songs.    "Coming Up" received positive reviews from critics and was praised for its catchy melodies and anthemic choruses. It debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart thanks to loads of airplay at the time and an insatiable appetite for British guitar bands.        Be our mate by handing out a solid handshake and rate or review the Personal Jukebox on Spotify, iTunes and all of your podcast providers. *LIVE RECORDING. I wrote and delivered this poem, The Beautiful Ones Have Changed to Light, in honor of the martyred poets and writers of Gaza and Falesteen as part of the first ever Los Angeles reading of The Gaza Monologues, on January 19, 2024. Our gathering was organized by the precious Sonali Fiske @sonalifiske (IG) with the blessing of Ashtar Theatre @ashtartheatre (IG) in Ramallah and in response to their global artistic solidarity call. We gathered to pay our respects, bear witness, send collective Love and prayer, and recite the heart-piercing monologues written by young souls in Gaza.To birth this prayer-poem posted here, I soul-studied each of the named martyrs (among so many unnamed here) and, for each of them, wrote passages specifically in their honor. My prayer is that these personalized passages intuitively reflect aspects of their singular lives, work, passions, personalities, prayers, and dreams, including phrases here that are inspired by and evocative of their own written work.On Jan. 28, I posted on IG an unofficial phone recording of me reciting this poem. You may find it on my page. The official video of our overall monologue reading will be shared by Sonali and others in the days to come. For a written copy of this poem, please email jaiya@soulwater.org.Please feel free to share and post this poem with proper crediting far and wide, especially within the diaspora Fal*steeni and Levantine communities. We had the pleasure of interviewing Dean Ford over Zoom video!Rising pop-rock artist Dean Ford has released his new EP Dream Fever. The formation of the 6-track EP began out of a need for creativity and excitement for Dean as he expanded on his sonic exploration, combining classic 80s synth-pop and rock. Resulting in his most cohesive project yet, the project finds Dean detailing the different kinds of love found throughout life's journey: the hopefulness and infatuation you feel at the beginning of something new, the realities that set in when the rose-tinted glasses come off, the power struggles that can manifest, and everything in between.Co-written and produced by studio wizard Bleu (Demi Lovato, Jonas Brothers, MichelleBranch), Dream Fever further elevates the vibrant and effervescent sound Dean is best known for as he speaks to the emotional ups and downs that occur in any relationship as well as the overall effect we have on one another. Dean reminisces on memories of the past while longing for the potential the future can bring.First creating music at 15, Dean always saw himself becoming a performer and did just that. The Maine-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter took inspiration from legends such as David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Madonna, and James Brown — artists who were bigger than their music, personas, and cultural markers all unto themselves — when developing his sound throughout the years both on and off the stage. Dean has gone on to release two earlier projects, 2012's Ctrl and 2015's Get Messy, along with a string of singles as a solo artist in addition to captivating audiences around the country with his Prince tribute band, Dean Fordand the Beautiful Ones. Inspired by the isolation of the pandemic, which kept him from the stage where he feels most at home, Dean is excited now more than ever to share this next chapter with fans everywhere. We want to hear from you! "Behavioral sink" is a term invented by ethologist John B. Calhoun to describe a collapse in Society which can result from overcrowding.  But Calhoun may have mistaken overcrowding as the cause of the societal collapse instead of the fact that scientists provided the rats with everything. In essence they created a socialist utopia.   Universe 25 may just be predicting the downfall of America.   The term and concept derive from a series of over-population experiments Calhoun conducted on Norway rats between 1958 and 1962. In the experiments, Calhoun and his researchers created a series of "rat utopias" – enclosed spaces in which rats were given unlimited access to food and water, enabling unfettered population growth. Calhoun coined the term "behavioral sink" in his February 1, 1962 report in an article titled "Population Density and Social Pathology" in Scientific American on the rat experiment.[3] He would later perform similar experiments on mice, from 1968 to 1972. Calhoun's work became used as an animal model of societal collapse, and his study has become a touchstone of urban sociology and psychology in general.   The Apple subscribe link is here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/stinchfield/id1648560956 The Spotify subscribe link is here: https://open.spotify.com/show/7y6jgJ3af2ymyDQ79Nk0yv You can also watch on rumble:https://rumble.com/c/GrantStinchfield Stinchfield website https://grantstinchfield.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Her gender analysis is rooted in Red Pill theory—she admittedly came up reading Chateau Heartiste—and she's the first woman I've ever heard bring up the concept of hypergamy. She joins Peachy Keenan and Aimee Therese on the Mount Rushmore of Female Dissident Right (FDR), although I'm not sure she would agree with this characterization. She's got a JD from UVA and now works for the Independent Women's Forum, a right-leaning think tank which recently filed an amicus brief arguing against the U.S. Women's Soccer absurd pay discrimination lawsuit.Stepman can cover an immense amount of ground very quickly. Our convo covers Biden's recent pro-ESG veto, Lochner v. New York's impact on feminism, John Calhoun's Beautiful Ones experiment, and how school choice can serve as a patronage system for the contemporary right. Welcome to our Anniversary Divas Series! 2022 marks the 25th anniversary and several career cementing and music defining projects for our divas. Picture it: the year is 1998. And within several weeks of one another, Mariah Carey's “Butterfly”, Janet Jackson's “The Velvet Rope”, Whitney Houston & Brandy's “Cinderella” and the Spice Girls' “Spiceworld” were all released into the world and pop culture was never quite the same again. Oh, and a little album called “Thriller” by an up and coming artist named Michael Jackson is also celebrating its 40th anniversary year, as well. We hope you enjoy these next episodes as we celebrate these amazing projects and artists! To kick off Anniversary Divas, Angie (@poertrysoul3) and Steffi (@inn_mho) are going track by track, reviewing arguably this diva's BEST album in her discography: Butterfly (1997).At the top of this episode, we discuss a HUGE diva headline. RIH RIH AND THE SUPERBOWL. We share some songs we hope make the set list and briefly discuss other potential Superbowl Headliners. Also, during our Oscar & Razzie Moment of the week, we discuss the relevancy of anniversaries and whether or not artists should celebrate these milestones for their previous work. As we do in all of our Diva Discography episodes, part 1 is an in-depth review and discussion on EVERY SINGLE TRACK of the album. We then end our conversation sharing our Top 3 favorite songs from the album, 1 song we'd cut, and the underrated gem. Make sure you tune in next week for part 2 when we talk about Mariah Carey's Butterfly era.Album Info: Butterfly is the sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey, released on September 16, 1997, by Columbia Records. The album contains both hip hop and urban adult contemporary sounds, as well as some softer and more contemporary melodies. Throughout the project, Carey worked with Walter Afanasieff, with whom she had written and produced most of the material from her previous albums. She also worked with many famed hip hop producers and rappers, such as Sean "Puffy" Combs, Q-Tip, Missy Elliott and the Trackmasters. With the latter acts producing most of the album, Butterfly deviated from the adult contemporary sound of Carey's previous albums.*Email us for show notes: divadailiespod@gmail.com*Twitter & Instagram: @divadailiespod*YouTube: Diva Dailies PodcastSTEFFI'S SOCIAL MEDIA:*Twitter & Instagram: @inn_mho*YouTube: innmyhumbleopinionANGIE'S SOCIAL MEDIA:*Twitter: @poetrysoul3*YouTube: Sleepy Nerd ProductionsEPISODE TIME STAMPS:- Explaining Our Next Theme: Anniversary Divas! The Autonomous Creative
Challenging the dominant culture: intent vs. interpretation with Ronald Wimberly

The Autonomous Creative

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2022

On this episode of The Autonomous Creative, I sit down for a super fun conversation with Ronald Wimberly. Ronald is best known for his graphic novel Prince of Cats, which is currently being developed as a film by Legendary Entertainment. His other works include a giant tabloid journal and art magazine on identity and visual culture, LAAB, Sentences: The Life of MF Grimm, Black History In Its Own Words, and his critically acclaimed webcomic, Gratuitous Ninja (which is currently being Kickstarted and published by Beehive Books as a 600-page accordion-folded concertina!). I first met Ronald Wimberly in 2007, and shortly after we came together to work on my book, Trish Trash. We have had many long, in depth conversations over the years, and I can always count on them turning out hilarious, challenging, and never boring. This one is no exception. We explore some of Ronald's most popular work and its influences, including other artists, cultures, and his personal identity. Ronald compares the many references in his work to sampling, and explains why he believes it leads to deeper, more engaging art. We also discuss the discrepancies between the artist's intent, and the audience's interpretation. How much does it actually matter? Is it better, healthier even, to look away? More from the episode... Ronald breaks down some of the references in his graphic novel, Prince of Cats, which he describes as the B-side to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. “One of the lessons about being an artist that I've learned over these years is you put stuff out, you mean things, sometimes it's inconsequential to what people get from it” — Why Ronald thinks focusing too heavily on how his work is perceived is unhealthy. Ronald reminiscences on New York in the 80's, newsstands, and being introduced to the world of comics. We discuss the early influences on Ronald's work, such as Japanese pop culture and Jordan Crane's Non, and examine the value of tracing these influences. Ronald talks about meeting fellow comic, Evan Dorkin, author of Milk & Cheese, and the joke it took him ten years to understand. “You and the world that you live in has created this.” — How dominant culture and aesthetics feed into each other, from hex codes to Marvel movies. What does Ronald mean when he talks about “doing the least possible reproduction of pernicious ideas that are embedded in aesthetics”? “I always liked the collector cards from Marvel more than the comics...It's an exploded world.” — How does building context enrich a work of art? Ronald explains the intention behind his tabloid newspaper, LAAB, and how it compares to work he's done in the past. More from Ronald Wimberly Ronald Wimberly is a comic artist best known for Black History In Its Own Words and Prince of Cats, an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet set in NYC in the 80s, which he's now developing as a film with Legendary Entertainment. He's got several other major projects in the works as well, like his giant tabloid journal and art magazine on identity and visual culture, LAAB, plus more comics and more movies. Guy is BUSY. Ronald and I even collaborated once on a comic called "The Beautiful Ones", and he was my inspiration for a well-loved blog post about whether it's a "HELL YEAH" or no.
