Fruit of the Root, 2 of 8 from June 14, 2026 “We grow in love as we walk with God's Spirit.” Galatians 5 & Philippians 4 by Michael Lockstampfor (@miklocks)SUMMARYThis sermon teaches that Biblical joy is an active choice to “rejoice in the Lord always,” grounded not in changing circumstances but in God's unchanging character, presence, and work. Pastor Michael, candid about his own lack of natural joy, calls listeners to abide in Christ, let the Spirit grow this fruit, turn anxious fixation on what's broken into grateful attention to what is true and good so that Spirit-produced joy is seen as a compelling witness to the reality of Jesus.REFLECTION & DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Dr. John Lennox has lived one of the most remarkable lives in modern Christian thought. From sitting in on CS Lewis's final lectures at Cambridge in 1962, earning his PhD and teaching at Oxford as Emeritus Professor of Mathematics, debating Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, and authoring best-selling books on faith, science, suffering, AI, and Revelation. In this conversation, Dr. Lennox joins me to discuss his new autobiography, My Story. We talk about his encounter with CS Lewis, what he considers the hardest objection to Christianity (suffering and evil), and how his mind is increasingly filled with the hope of heaven. Matt and Michael dive into three recent news stories that have them asking the same question. What is this madness? They break down the California mayoral race, the Karmelo Anthony murder trial, and the Somali World Cup referee denied entry to the US. But the headlines are just the entry point. The real conversation is about something deeper. Why does it feel like half the country has stopped operating in good faith? Why do people defend narratives at the cost of reality itself? And what happens to a culture when it unhooks itself from any higher ideal? Matt brings in John C. Lennox's argument that atheism, taken to its logical conclusion, unwinds rationality completely. If your brain is the product of a purposeless process, why would you trust it to do science or even to claim you are rational? The guys connect this to Nietzsche's warning about unhooking the earth from its sun, and to C.S. Lewis's insight from The Screwtape Letters about directing malice toward neighbors and benevolence toward strangers we will never meet. They also get personal. Michael talks about being in love with the idea of his wife and kids versus actually loving them. Matt quotes Teresa of Avila. God, I don't love you. I don't even want to love you, but I want to want to love you. The episode lands on a hard truth. Without a shared goal, there is no progress. And right now, we do not even agree that there should be a goal. Cheers y'all
What does the future hold for humanity—and where does Jesus fit into that story? In this bonus episode of Bible Matters, we bring you a second interview with Oxford mathematician and Christian apologist John Lennox. Together, we explore one of the defining questions of our time: what kind of future are we moving towards? From rapid advances in technology to the growing interest in “upgrading” humanity, many are asking whether science can ultimately solve our deepest problems—even death itself. But are these hopes realistic? And what vision of the future does the Bible offer? Drawing on his book 2084, John unpacks: The promise and pitfalls of modern technology What it really means to be human The dangers of trying to redefine humanity Why the Christian hope speaks powerfully into today's questions Most importantly, we consider how the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ reshape the way we think about progress, identity, and our ultimate destiny. Whether you're sceptical, curious, or already convinced, this conversation invites you to think more deeply about the future—and the hope that truly lasts. What hope does artificial intelligence really offer for the future of humanity? In this episode of the Bible Matters Podcast, Oxford mathematician John Lennox reflects on AI, transhumanism, and the growing belief that technology can solve humanity's deepest problems. Drawing on science, philosophy, and the Bible, Lennox explains why technological progress cannot overcome death, sin, or the brokenness at the heart of human nature. Instead, he points to the hope of the Bible — a hope grounded not in machines or human enhancement, but in Jesus Christ, the resurrection, and the promise of new life. This wide‑ranging conversation explores: What artificial intelligence can and cannot do The ethical dangers of transhumanism Why science needs a Christian worldview to make sense Why death is more than a technical problem The lasting hope offered by Jesus and the resurrection The Bible Matters Podcast is funded entirely by the generous donations of its listeners. What a renowned 82-year-old Christian mathematician has to say about a life well lived. Watch this conversation on YouTube For decades, Oxford mathematics professor emeritus John Lennox has stood in lecture halls, debate stages, and university classrooms making the case that Christianity is not a retreat from serious thought but an invitation into it. He has debated some of the world's best-known skeptics, from Richard Dawkins to Christopher Hitchens. He taught mathematics at Oxford. He smuggled Christian teaching behind the Iron Curtain. And now, in his eighties, with his health declining and his world physically growing smaller, he has written a memoir looking back on the strange providences that shaped his life. In his new autobiography, My Story: A spiritual and intellectual autobiography, Professor Lennox reflects on growing up amid sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland, actually hearing C. S. Lewis lecture at Cambridge (literally!), being followed by the KGB, and learning over time that saying “I don't know” can sometimes open deeper doors than feigning certainty. If you've ever wondered whether intellectual seriousness and deep Christian conviction can actually coexist alongside tenderness and joy, step into the classroom: the professor is in. John Lennox came to worldwide attention and renown through debating the likes of famous atheists Dawkins and Hitchens, but less well known is his work behind the Iron Curtain, which impacted millions in its own right. At 82-years-old now, he's still managed to come out with two books this year alone, including his autobiography. His is a high-profile life well-lived indeed, free from any whiff of scandal; humble, gracious, laser-focused, it's wonderful to listen to this wise old hero of the faith looking back and readying himself to meet his Maker.▶️ Watch this as a video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/pJuRm0w3Rl4Check out www.johnlennox.org to see his debates with Dawkins et al, or buy his books, including his recently-released autobiography ‘John C. Rosa Hunt speaks to Emeritus Professor John Lennox, one of the most acclaimed Christian apologists of modern times, about his new autobiography 'My Story.' With Rosa, John reflects on his childhood growing up in Northern Ireland, studying at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, and teaching mathematics across the world. He's defending the Christian faith in lecture halls, debates and the public square for more than sixty years, including debating the New Atheists Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens.Throughout his career John has maintained that rigorous science and deep faith are not enemies but allies, and has devoted his life in the public sphere to defending this principle. He's tackled some of the thorniest questions in public debates; where is God in the Big Bang? Can faith and science mix? Does God exist? John takes us on a journey from Northern Ireland to Wales, Germany and Soviet Russia, tracing a lifetime devoted to mathematics, faith and reason.
eries: God's Promises, Our JourneyTitle: "Where are you looking for security?"Scripture: Genesis 20-21 NIV Galatians 2-5Bottom Line: Every time we feel insecure, we reach for control. And every time we reach for control, we reveal what we really trust.INTRODUCTIONCONTEXTOUTLINECONCLUSIONDISCUSSION QUESTIONSNOTESYOUTUBE DESCRIPTIONMAIN REFERENCES USEDMy opening prayer: Lord God, help us grow to be and do like Jesus, while abiding in him and leading others to do the same. OPENING STORY/ILLUSTRATIONDid you know you can insure your teeth and smile (Julia Roberts)… your hair Troy Palomalu)… even your taste buds (Gordon Ramsay)? You can insure your wedding (rain), your golf shot (hole in one), even against alien abduction…We laugh… but think about it—we are constantly trying to secure ourselves against what we cannot control. And Genesis 20–21 shows us something uncomfortable…Abraham is doing the same thing.CONTEXTThe thread is security:Abraham seeks security through deception (Gen 20)Abraham seeks security through control (Gen 21:1–21)Abraham seeks security through agreements (Gen 21:22–34)God shows that true security comes only from HimOUTLINE (influenced by John Lennox & ChatGPT)1. FALSE SECURITY: TRUSTING OUR OWN STRATEGIES (Gen 20:1–18)2. PARTIAL SECURITY: TRUSTING GOD… BUT STILL CONTROLLING (Gen 21:1–21)3. TEMPORARY SECURITY: TRUSTING HUMAN AGREEMENTS (Gen 21:22–34)4. TRUE SECURITY: TRUSTING GOD ALONE (BRIDGE TO GENESIS 22)Have you ever inflated your image or resume to look better? When we write a resume, we can get carried away over our accomplishments. Wording things to sound better than they really are. And then there's social media where we post pictures and poses of ourselves doing amazing things as if this is what our life is always like. We don't usually post pics of ourselves in unflattering positions or looks. That may not be conscious but it easily could be in the back of our mind. It's a fine line, right? What are our motives? Not a full lie. Just a truth designed to make us look better than we are. That's kind of like what Abraham is doing here. Technically true but still deceptive. And intentional—even strategic—deception is a sin. That's the heart of what a lie is. Deception.1. FALSE SECURITY: TRUSTING OUR OWN STRATEGIES (Gen 20:1–18)Text movement:Abraham repeats old sin (Gen 12 replay)Lies about Sarah (half-truth still deception)Abimelech acts with integrity (understood that Kings could take a woman)God intervenes (Sovereign)Key tension:The man of faith still falls back into fear.Key insight (pastoral):Abraham is trying to protect the promise by human meansFear makes us revert to old patternsWhen we don't feel secure in God's promises, we start managing our journey ourselves.Application/Diagnostic question:Where do I bend truth, control perception, or manipulate situations to feel secure?Bottom Line: Every time we feel insecure, we reach for control. And every time we reach for control, we reveal what we really trust.2. PARTIAL SECURITY: TRUSTING GOD… BUT STILL CONTROLLING (Gen 21:1–21)Do you make “just in case” plans? Backup plans?Do you have a financial emergency fund? This can be a wise decision. But where is your ultimate financial security found? Are you trusting God with your finances? Are you generous with your finances or do you operate in fear of the future and lack generosity?A. God keeps His promise (Isaac is born)God is faithfulLaughter fulfilled (Sarah → joy)B. Abraham expels IshmaelReal tension: promise vs. threatAbraham acts to “secure” Isaac's futureAbraham removes perceived threats to secure the promise. (Lennox)But God…Sees HagarProvides a wellKeeps promise to Ishmael tooKey theological move:God's promise doesn't depend on Abraham's controlGod cares for the “outsider” (Hagar/Ishmael)Even when we try to secure God's promises our way, God remains faithful to His purposes and our journey.Application/Diagnostic question:Where do I bend truth, control perception, or manipulate situations to feel secure?Where am I trusting God—but still trying to control the outcome?Bottom Line: Every time we feel insecure, we reach for control. And every time we reach for control, we reveal what we really trust.3. TEMPORARY SECURITY: TRUSTING HUMAN AGREEMENTS (Gen 21:22–34)Contracts vs. TrustWe sign contracts because we don't fully trust peoplePrenupsLegal agreementsNDAs“Agreements can create stability—but they can't create ultimate security.”Text movement:Abimelech recognizes God is with Abraham (pattern continues throughout Genesis)Covenant over wellsBeersheba establishedKey idea:This is not wrong—it's just limitedMutual security arrangements are still human-level solutions. (Lennox)Key contrast:This is horizontal security, not ultimate (vertical) security“You can build agreements with people—but you cannot build ultimate security without God.”Application/diagnostic questions:Where do I bend truth, control perception, or manipulate situations to feel secure?Where am I trusting God—but still trying to control the outcome?jWhere do I rely on relationships, systems, or resources as my ultimate safety?Do people see that God is with you?Bottom Line: Every time we feel insecure, we reach for control. And every time we reach for control, we reveal what we really trust.4. TRUE SECURITY: TRUSTING GOD ALONE (BRIDGE TO GENESIS 22)This is where you preview without preaching Gen 22The real test is: does Abraham's security rest in God—or in Isaac? (Lennox)Set it up like this:Gen 20 → security through deceptionGen 21 → security through control and agreementsGen 22 → God exposes the heart“God will lovingly test whatever you trust most—because He wants to be your only true security.”1. God's faithfulness despite flawed faithAbraham fails → God remains faithfulStrong gospel echo without forcing it2. God sees the overlooked (Hagar)Fits your church's “best neighbors ever” visionMissional application3. Security vs. trustDeeply relatableConnects to anxiety, control, family, financesCONCLUSIONBottom Line: Every time we feel insecure, we reach for control. And every time we reach for control, we reveal what we really trust.“You can insure almost anything in this life…but there is no policy that can secure your soul.Only God can do that.”PrayQuestions (Write this down) - grab an index card and penWhat is God saying to you right now? Peter Robinson sits down with mathematician John Lennox, philosopher of science Stephen Meyer, and chemist James Tour to examine what modern science really suggests about the origin of the universe and life itself. Moving from the Big Bang and the discovery of cosmic beginnings, to the fine-tuning of the physical constants that make life possible, to the extraordinary complexity and information embedded in DNA, the conversation explores whether these developments point to blind, undirected processes—or to the activity of an intelligent mind. The trio challenges long-held materialist assumptions, revisits classic scientific debates, and reflects on what these questions mean not only for science but also for our understanding of human existence and purpose.
