The Columbian Exchange remains maybe the most significant historical development in modern history-setting the stage for the world we inhabit today. In modern day Mexico, the post-conquest colonial period led to the beginnings of many processes that would define Mexico and the Americas for years to come-the encomienda system, the racial casta system, class struggle in Mexico, tension between Spanish and indigenous, and the sparks of future Revolution. With the benefit of hindsight and counterfactuals, it's worth asking if the Columbian Exchange was the best or worst outcome we could have gotten? For many fans of history, the story of the Aztec empire ends with the Spanish conquest and the fall of Tenochtitan. But there was a post-conquest period, lasting for hundreds of years, in which the Spanish exerted authority and control over the people of the former Aztec Empire. The Mexica people had to make difficult decisions about conversion to Christianity, how much tribute to pay to the Spanish, how to incorporate the new rule of the Spanish into their lives, and how to deal with violence and terror. For some who thought life under the Spanish would be an improvement over Aztec rule, they may have been sorely disappointed. This is Part VII in a series on the rise, fall, and enduring legacy of the Aztec Empire. In this episode I discuss life under the Spanish in the post conqust period for the Mexica people, new tribute systems, violence and terror as tools of Spanish authority, Cortes' and Malintzin's expedition to Central America, conversion to Christianity and the difficulties both sides faced with this, and more. The Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire provides a great opportunity to think about many complex historical questions. How should we think about topics of colonialism and conquest from a modern lens? How are morality and historical narrative closely tied together? How did Spanish people and Mexica people think about the conquest both at the time and deep into the future? We finish off the Big 3 of Ancient Meso/South American civilizations with The Aztecs. Originally hailing from what is now the southern United States, the Mexica would enter the Valley the Mexico to find the place pretty crowded already. The only real spot left was a swampy marshy island in the middle of Lake Texcoco. Through innovation and engineering they created floating gardens to grow crops and sustain their growing population. The island that was once their disadvantage had now help them to grow and become valley's dominant peoples, ruling from their city of Tenochtitlan . Grand palaces, magnificent temples of sacrifice and enormous outdoor markets had the newly arrived Spanish Conquistadors in shock and awe. From their new base in Tenochtitlan, the Mexica people slowly built the Aztec Empire over the course of the 1300's. While the "myth of the Aztec" ascribes this accomplishment to the barbarism of human sacrifice and brutality, the Mexica both lived in a particular context and shaped their own unique political environment. Prince Nezahualcoyotl was a scholar, warrior, architect, poet and eventual ruler of the city-state of Texcoco in pre-Columbian era Mesoamerica during the century preceding Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. The Valley of Mexico is a highlands plateau surrounded by mountains and volcanoes (coterminous with present-day Mexico City) that was the centre for several pre-Columbian civilizations. Generations later, Conquistadors arrived in the New World. ACTS 19:8-20 8 Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God. 9 But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. 10 This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord. 11 God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them. 13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, "In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out." 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day, the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?" 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding. 17 When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. 18 Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed their evil deeds. 19 A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. 20 In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power. (NIV 84) FROM THE LESSON Burn the boats - a phrase spoken by Hernan Cortes, a Spanish conquistador who overthrew the Aztec Empire and won Mexico for the crown of Spain in 1519. Ephesian writings - Ephesus was a center for magical power in the Mediterranean world. The phrase "Ephesian writings" was used in antiquity to refer to any documents that contained magical spells and formulas. "All of life is repentance" - this is a quote from the reformer, Martin Luther. Believers commit not to a moment of repentance but to a life of repentance.  Definition of repentance - "the call to repent is an invitation to see the world differently in light of Jesus Christ." DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1 Icebreaker: can you think of a motivational phrase or memorable motto that you have liked or that has encouraged you in some way through the years? Share it with your group. 2 Repentance is not a one-time event, but instead it is a commitment to a lifelong process. Discuss the difference with your group. 3 The call to repent is an invitation to rethink everything in your life in light of His life. Discuss this process with your group. 4 We looked at three characteristics of the kind of repentance that leads to spiritual breakthrough in Acts 19:17-19. Re-read these verses. The characteristics are conviction (verse 17), confession (verse 18), and conversion (verse 19). Discuss the importance of these three characteristics with your group.

During February 2024, the latest storm brought 1.99 inches of rain to Southern California so far, bringing this month's total rainfall to 12.56 inches. The latest storm dropped 1.99 inches of rain in downtown Los Angeles and it makes it the fourth wettest February in downtown Los Angeles since 1877 when records first were reported. The monster storm triggered hundreds of mudslides across Los Angeles. Why do they happen?Our story takes 500 years to the past back to the Aztec Empire, who believed in a complex and diversified pantheon of gods and goddesses.Tlaloc, the god of rain, water, and earthly fertility, is one of the most ancient deities in all Mesoamerica.  The Aztecs believed that if sacrifices were not supplied for Tlaloc, rain would not come, their crops would not flourish, and so, human sacrifices were performed...child sacrifices. Visual accounts of Aztec sacrificial practice are principally found in codices and some Aztec statuary. Many visual renderings were created for Spanish patrons and thus may reflect European preoccupations and prejudices.Archaeologists have found the remains of at least 42 children sacrificed to Tlaloc at the Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlan.  Tlaloc required the tears of the young as part of the sacrifice. The priests made the children cry on their way to immolation: a good omen that Tlaloc would wet the earth in the rainy season.The Tlaloc Monolith is among the most photographed public artworks in Mexico City. Standing on the grounds of the National Anthropology Museum it represents an ancient deity of rain and water. The monument was buried from at least the 16th century in San Miguel Coatlinchán, east of Mexico City in Mexico State, and found in the mid-19th century. In 1964 the statue was moved to Mexico City. The Aztec Empire was a large and sophisticated one, stretching at its height from the Pacific coast to the Gulf of Mexico. But in August 1521, after a last stand on the steps of their temple buildings, the Aztec defenders of Tenochtitlan surrendered to the Spanish forces of Hernán Cortés and his Mesoamerican allies.To talk about the fall of the Aztec Empire, Dan is joined by Matthew Restall, Director of Latin American Studies at Penn State University. In the 16th century, a series of deadly epidemics swept through much of the region of Mesoamerica known as the Aztec Empire, killing untold millions. By the start of the first of these epidemics, the area had become woefully accustomed to devasting epidemic disease, as the Spanish conquistadors had introduced smallpox, measles, typhus, and influenza, among other infections. But this disease, with its tendency to induce massive hemorrhage, fever, jaundice, and rapid death, seemed different from those now familiar infections, and so was given a new name: cocoliztli. People watched in horror as cocoliztli overtook town after town, village after village, sometimes killing as much as 80% of the population and leaving nothing but desolation in its wake. Hundreds of years after the epidemics ended, debate about the pathogen responsible for cocoliztli remains. In this episode, we're going deep down the rabbit hole of this medical mystery, linking the spread and nature of these epidemics with the characteristics of the many pathogens that have been proposed over the years. We draw from contemporary accounts, ecological analyses, and even a recent ancient DNA study to make our evaluations, but do we ever get to the bottom of cocoliztli? In a sense, 1521 is Mexico's 1619. A foundational moment that for centuries has been shaped by just one perspective: a European one. And for a long time it was largely accepted as truth. But in recent decades researchers have pieced together a more nuanced, complicated version based on Indigenous accounts: a version that challenges what one historian calls "the greatest PR job in the history of the West."
