She turned hustle into a $4 billion brand, Emma Grede breaks down how she built Kardashian fashion empires  Emma Grede is the founding partner behind the globally successful brands SKIMS, Good American, and Safely, all launched with the Kardashian family. She is also Chairwoman of The Fifteen Percent Pledge, is a board member at Baby2Baby, and was named one of Forbes ‘Richest Self-Made Women in America'.  She explains:  Growing up in East London, raised by a single mother, and how early hardship forged her fierce independence. Taking on a maternal role from childhood, learning to lead through responsibility, empathy, and survival. Turning rejection, dyslexia, and a lack of qualifications into fuel for building billion-dollar fashion brands. Balancing ambition and motherhood, and the personal toll of leadership, hustle, and hard decisions. Building SKIMS and Good American without fashion training, and the mindset that made it all possible. 00:00 Intro   02:17 Becoming Emma Grede   03:58 Acting as the Mum and Raising My Siblings   06:49 Lacking a Father Figure Growing Up   08:25 Anger Management Tools I Learned   11:06 My Dream Was Always Fashion   12:20 Understanding Money Attachment Styles   14:32 Emma's Recipe to Achieve Anything   17:55 Customer Feedback   19:30 The Importance of Reliable Decision Partners & Mentality Shifts   21:38 Do People Need Mentors to Succeed?   24:06 The One Skill That Made Me an Entrepreneur   26:09 The Three Most Important Words for Career Advancement   27:25 Does Working in an Office Make Employees More Successful?   31:11 Traits of Future Successful People   33:32 Interview Red Flags & Work-Life Balance   39:32 Can You Be Successful and Have Work-Life Balance?   40:58 You Can't Be a Leader and a People Pleaser   43:51 Being Cancelled as a Leader and Public Figure   46:29 Racism and Sexism in the Business Industry   50:56 Dealing With Business Struggles and Crises   53:33 Top 3 Valuable Practices for Founders   55:58 Don't Get Stuck—Keep Fresh Eyes   57:15 Brands Copying Other Brands   01:00:42 Advice for People With Unsupportive Partners   01:02:10 Scheduling Date Night   01:05:45 Meeting Kris Jenner   01:12:05 Pitching to Khloé Kardashian   01:12:43 Turning an Idea Into a Business   01:14:23 Strategies Deployed in Business   01:16:24 Building a Brand Strategy in 2025   01:21:11 First Principles of Business   01:25:59 How to Become the Best Salesperson   01:33:01 Learning How to Fire People   01:37:17 Attracting Top Talent to Your Company   01:39:37 What a Founder Shouldn't Do in Business   01:41:33 Hiring Exceptional People   01:45:42 Prejudices in the Workplace   01:49:09 Why Prejudices Shouldn't Limit Anyone   01:50:39 How to Stop Giving a F***   01:54:16 When Do Successful Women Have Children?   01:56:01 My IVF Journey and Miscarriages   02:00:30 The Taboo Around Surrogacy, Freezing Eggs & Pregnancy   02:04:51 Emma Grede's New Podcast ‘Aspire'   Follow Emma:  Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/emmagrede/?hl=en  Good American - https://www.goodamerican.com/ SKIMS - http://skims.com/ Safely - https://getsafely.com/  Aspire With Emma Grede Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/aspire-with-emma-grede/id1811878340 The 1% Diary is back - limited time only: https://thediary.com/products/one-percent-diary The Diary Of A CEO Conversation Cards (Second Edition): https://thediary.com/products/the-conversation-cards-2nd-edition Get email updates: https://bit.ly/diary-of-a-ceo-yt  Think like a CEO - join the 100 CEOs newsletter: https://bit.ly/100-ceos-newsletter   Follow Steven: https://g2ul0.app.link/gnGqL4IsKKb  Sponsors: Vanta - https://vanta.com/steven Learn more about your ad choices. Periodically on TRUST ME I KNOW WHAT I'm DOING , we share a SPOTLIGHT conversation and feature brief chats with an individual from the community about a special topic or a unique endeavor. In this spotlight episode, Aki Kumar shares his journey as a blues musician, discussing the universality of blues themes, the importance of being a lifelong student of the genre, and how his Desi identity influences his music. He reflects on the emotional outlet that blues provides and the lessons learned from performing. Aki also explores the relationship between art and identity, expressing optimism for the future of music and his upcoming album. Check out his website (akikumar.com) for news and details about upcoming shows! Now there are lots of people who  love Bollywood music, and there are certainly a lot of people who love American blues music. But what happens when those two worlds meet?  And that's what set the stage for a conversation I shared with Aki Kumar, a musician and singer who for over the past decade has been trying to ensure that the intersection of these two musical genres is a space that you need to pay attention to.  Aki was born and raised in Mumbai and came to the US to study computer science - ok that part isn't without a playbook or blueprint.  But with a passion for Indian music and a deep new embrace for American blues history and local blues performances, Aki set about to express himself by blending melodies from Hindi films with blues music, garnering a buzz for his performances everywhere, many local awards along the way, and the title of “San Jose's king of Bollywood Blues”.  Now I have to tell you, that I caught one of his shows here in the Bay Area, and from experiencing Aki on stage, his singing, his killer harmonica style, and his superb band,  I could not have asked for a more entertaining way to enjoy both true Americana mixed with some soulful imaginations of Indian music.  Now for me this was all a pleasant surprise because I had made some natural assumptions about what Bollywood Blues might be, so as we   began chatting, I asked him if he also made assumptions about persona or expectations when it came to his unique brand of making music?Like many, my heart and soul go out to those who are struggling as a result of the Los Angeles wildfires. Please help contribute to the American Red Cross, Mutual Aid LA Network, various Go FundMe efforts, Save the Children, and Baby2Baby. Hoping for a safe, peaceful, and supportive recovery for everyone.

What's this? A messy love quadrangle?  You know Kelly and Ragon are all over that!  We channel our best Normal Gossip podcast inspiration and dive into our discussion of the self-sabotaging lovers of Rainbow Valley!  We ask such questions as “What's Ellen's deal anyway?”  And “Wait, do we agree with Norman Douglas?” And most importantly “Who should we cast in our movie version of this story?”   On a more serious note, if you'd like to help Kelly rebuild after losing her home in the terrible Eaton fire, we have a fundraiser to support her as she begins the overwhelming task of recovering.  And if you would like to help Los Angeles recover from the horrific wildfires, here are some places that are doing good work: World Central Kitchen is feeding people on the ground in Los Angeles. LA County Fire Department is doing heroic work and we aren't done with the fires. Pasadena Humane Society is caring for the wild animals and pets lost or injured in the fire. Baby2Baby provides disaster relief to families and children in poverty impacted by the fires. Give Directly is fundraising to provide direct cash support to those in most need after the fire for shelter, food, clothing. Inspired by: This whole episode was inspired by one of our favorite podcasts Normal Gossip. Kelly was inspired by the 1995 Persuasion adaptation and the miniseries based on Elizabeth Gaskell's  North and South. Ragon was inspired by the classic rom-com While You Were Sleeping and the time travel romance in About Time .  If you want to get a free logo sticker from us, either leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or share your love for the pod on social media!  Send us a photo of your share or review at either our email: kindredspirits.bookclub@gmail.com or on our KindredSpirits.BookClub Instagram.

Los Angeles. The city has always been a second home for me. As a kid who fell in love with Old Hollywood films, I dreamed of visiting the City of Angels. And once I did, I fell in love with such a magical place. Years later I would start working in the entrainment industry, leading me to visit LA multiple times a year for over a decade. It truly became a home away from home. I have so many friends and family living in a city that is picking up the pieces to figure out what’s next. My heart is so heavy. The fire is all I can think about. But if there is any hope I have, it’s that the community is already rallying together to collectively heal. I have a feeling we will see stories coming out, highlighting the very best of humanity. And when my friend Jennifer Love Hewitt told me about her initiative to give back to the victims of the fires, I knew I had to bring her on The Elvis Duran Show to hear how we all can join in helping. In this episode Jennifer opens up for the first time about how she has been doing since the fires hit, her new clothing collection with BFFS and BABES in which 100% of proceeds help Baby2Baby, how to continue supporting LA from afar and so much more. Kelly and Norah were on very different life paths. Kelly was a model, who spent her free time volunteering with Head Start - an experience that opened her eyes to how many children lacked basic necessities, like properly fitting shoes. Norah was a lawyer at a high-powered New York City firm, who enjoyed engaging in pro bono work, especially in helping low-income women secure housing and other resources. But a dinner between the two - arranged by Kelly's father-in-law - revealed their shared passions for nonprofit work, their new status as mothers, and their interest in pivoting in their careers, eventually leading to the two women becoming the CEOs of Baby2Baby. Now, Baby2Baby provides millions of diapers and other essentials to those in need and garners support from an impressive list of celebrities, including Jessica Alba, Kim Kardashian, Ayesha Curry, and Drew Barrymore. In this episode of She Pivots, Kelly and Norah talk about the role of celebrity engagement in Baby2Baby, the logistics of their first 100,000 diaper donation, and overcoming sexism they have faced as CEOs of a female-led non-profit. CARA NATTERSON, MD, is a pediatrician, consultant, and New York Times bestselling author of puberty and parenting books. In 2020, she launched OOMLA, a company dedicated to making puberty more comfortable, literally.Cara's journey through health advocacy began at Harvard College, Johns Hopkins Medical School, and the University of California at San Francisco. In 2000, Cara joined Tenth Street Pediatrics in Santa Monica, caring for thousands of kids from birth through their teen years. In 2008, she founded Worry Proof Consulting, a practice that gives parents time their primary doctors often don't have to cover medical, behavioral, and parenting issues in depth. Cara travels the country speaking to both kids and parents about taking ownership of their health and wellness, translating cutting- edge research into understandable, actionable, and even entertaining information.Cara has served on several boards as a Director or Advisor, including Starlight Children's Foundation, The Honest Company, Zemcar, Baby2Baby, and The John Thomas Dye School. And when she's not doing any of this other stuff, she is spending time with the people who make her all the better at it: her husband and two teenage kids.About OOMLA: Julie, the mom of a then fourth grader with budding boobs, called Cara, a similarly situated mom who also happened to be a pediatrician and writer of books about puberty. Julie and Cara didn't really know one another. The conversation went something like this:Julie: Where do you buy your daughter bras?Cara: I don't… because they're categorically terrible! None of them work well or feel good or look anywhere close to cute.Julie: Well first of all, your daughter needs a bra. (Long pause…) And second of all, my mom – who sewed all of the clothes I ever wore as a child, down to my underpants – has made one. Can I bring it by your house so that you can check it out? A few days later Julie, her daughter, and the bra showed up on Cara's front doorstep. At the end of an hour, the two tweens decided they had to be best friends because there were two of them but only one bra. Every other bra they had tried was too pulling, pushing, padded, itchy, wired, scratchy, or so flimsy it didn't do a thing. And all of the bras out there used broken sizing systems like judge-y S/M/L or confusing number/letter combos that make zero sense for kids with barely anything there yet. But the girls wanted a bra they could wear regularly - their morphing chests were super sensitive to tops in a way they had never been before. Not to mention that the area had become so surprisingly tender that if an errant backpack or elbow made contact, ouch!As the girls (and their boobs) grew and grew, Cara and Julie kept iterating and sizing up. By the time they launched OOMLA, the game changing OOMBRA fit perfectly whether breasts were just starting to bud or they'd grown all the way up to bra sizes 34D or 36B. Because the OOMBRA is made from buttery cotton that feels like second skin, it's ridiculously soft and so comfortable you forget you're wearing anything at all. Between the outer layers sits a middle panel to give gentle compression without any tight binding or bulky, awkward pads... an innovation designed to support boobs and hide nipples considered so novel that it received a patent. We invented a bra that felt like hugs for your boobs - sweatpants for your chest - and everyone who tried it on fell in love.

Follow @Baby2Baby to keep up with their amazing COVID-19 relief work!” California Governor Gavin Newsom said during a Tuesday press conference that he expects all K-12 California schools to open in the fall and resume in-person instruction Monday-Friday after a year of remote virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Baby2Baby and Amazon's star-studded welcome-back event comes three weeks after a survey showed parents of fewer than 1 in 3 students said they are ready to send their children back to Los Angeles school district campuses. After hyping his sixth studio album for the past few weeks, Justin Bieber finally dropped "Justice" -- a 16-track EP that shows the Grammy winner in a more vulnerable light. "Justice" starts off the piano ballad "2 Much," which is an ultra romantic love letter to wife Hailey Baldwin, who served as his musical muse for much of the album. "Justice" is rife with love songs and embraces a more pop-vibe than Bieber's previous album, "Changes," which advertised a heavier R&B and hip hop influence. The new album allows Bieber to slow down and show off his impressive vocal range, from the gentle "oohs" he weaves through the album's fourth track "Off My Face" to the long notes he is known to belt, which he shows off in track 2, "Deserve You." The 27-year-old does touch upon his R&B roots in "Peaches," of which he released a companion music video in tandem to releasing "Justice." Prior to releasing Justice, Bieber revealed on Twitter that he will be "supporting organizations that embody what justice looks like in action" and, while encouraging fans to do the same, shouted out several charities like Unite the Poor, The King Center and Baby2Baby. The album is now available for streaming and purchase everywhere. Rebecca’s success was further enhanced by the support of her brother, the company’s  CEO and co-founder, Uri Minkoff, who helped usher in and pioneer the company’s industry-leading  innovations with technology and fashion.  After four years of designing statement-making handbags and accessories with her trademark leathers,  studs and hardware, Rebecca returned to her roots of apparel design and introduced her first ready-to-wear  collection in 2009.  Today, Rebecca Minkoff is a global brand with a wide range of apparel, handbags, footwear, jewelry and  accessories products. In the spring of 2017, Rebecca Minkoff Watches was launched, reimagining the  category through their decidedly downtown, rock-and-roll aesthetic.   The brand has 3 national retail stores, eight international locations, and is distributed in over 900 stores  worldwide. In 2015, Rebecca Minkoff stores unveiled the first ever “Magic Mirror” technology, where  customers could interact with mirrors installed in the dressing room walls of her store and tap to pick out  additional sizes, colors and styles of clothing.  In 2011, Rebecca won industry recognition when she was awarded the Breakthrough Designer Award from  the Accessories Council. She is an active member of the CFDA, and supports multiple philanthropies  including Baby2Baby organization. In August of 2017, she was announced as a member of the first-ever New  York State Council on Women and Girls, in the company of other female industry leaders including  Refinery29 founder Christene Barberich, SoulCycle CEO Melanie Whelan and Deloitte CEO Cathy Engelbert.  Rebecca is dedicated to bringing women together to enact positive change.  In September of 2018, she established the Female Founder Collective, a network of businesses led by  women who invest in women’s financial power across a socio-economic spectrum by enabling and  empowering female-owned businesses.  In 2020, Rebecca will launch a diffusion line of children’s clothing called ‘little minkoff”, marking a foray into  designing a truly sustainable and environmentally friendly collection. She will also launch a new name sake  fragrance to be sold at retailers nationwide.  Rebecca is married to director Gavin Bellour, and they reside in Brooklyn with their three children.

The 20th Anniversary of the International Space Station (0:00:00) This month marks the 20thAnniversary of human habitation on the International Space Station. Since its inception, the orbiting laboratory has been the location of ground-breaking research and important milestones in space exploration. Tomorrow will mark another one of those important milestones. On Saturday, November 14th, NASA will launch its first commercial crew rotation aboard a SpaceX craft. This 4-person crew will replace the other astronauts who have been living and working on the space station since May. Here to catch us up on this mission and the International Space Station is NASA Astronaut Jonny Kim.   Gaining Strength from Ancestors (0:14:16) There's something truly special about making connections with ancestors, and I think we can find bravery for our own future by gleaning from our family's past. Recognizing the power family history has in our lives, Sarah Clift and Tara MacDonald started Olive Branch Connections. Their organization helps abused or homeless women leaving shelters in California by connecting them with their family history. Sarah and Tara join us today to tell us more about their organization.   How to Wait Well (0:35:00) It's inevitable that we will have to wait for things... which can cause us to feel bored, irritable, or stressed. Often, to fill our time, we turn to our phones, TV, or the radio to make the time go by faster. In fact, those periods of waiting tend to become our designated times for checking social media, getting news updates, and catching up on our favorite shows. But sometimes I think when we use our waiting periods like this, we are wasting precious time. So how can we wait better? Well, don't worry... We won't make you wait any longer to find out! Here to teach us how to change our approach and attitudes towards waiting is Director of the Design Cultures & Creativity Program at the University of Maryland and author of “Delayed Response: The Art of Waiting”, Dr. Jason Farman.   Blue's Clues Blue Friday (0:52:47) There are a few basic things that every kid should have like diapers, food, and clothing. But, unfortunately, there are some impoverished children who don't have access to these simple necessities. To help give them and their families what they need this holiday season, Nickelodeon is partnering with the non-profit Baby2Baby for “Blue Friday”... which is today! Here to tell us more about “Blue Friday” and what they're doing to kickstart the day, we're joined by Traci Paige Johnson, co-creator of Nickelodeon's popular show “Blue's Clues & You!” and the voice of Blue.   Weekend Review (1:26:44) Lisa and Richie talk about what there is to do this weekend, from the new shows coming to streaming services to the New York Times bestseller list to what's going on in your community.

This past week Meghan continued her women orientated work, participating in what was called a Couch Potato Event, hosted by the American organizations When We All Vote and The United States of Women The event that Meghan was invited to was called “When All WOMEN Vote." Partly to commemorate the centennial of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution and partly to encourage women to both register and vote in this years US elections.Meghan made some short introductory comments, stressing how this year it is exceptionally important to vote. Meghan made a personal call to action to women voters, to take part in the election, insisting that 'if we aren't part of the solution, we are part of the problem'.Meghan’s comments made news all around the world and caused some controversy in certain elements of the UK press. So why were Meghan’s comments such a big issue for Brits? I will try to explain. What made Meghan and Harry don their shorts? – They were looking very laid back and relaxed this past week in their khaki shorts and sneakers as they reconnected with one of their favourite US non-profits Baby2Baby. https://baby2baby.org/Per their social media, Bay2Baby's mission is to provide children living in poverty, ages 0-12 years, with diapers, clothing and all the basic necessities that each child deserves. In the last 9 years, Baby2Baby say that they have distributed over 100 million items to children in homeless shelters, domestic violence programs, foster care, hospitals and underserved schools as well as children who have lost everything in the wake of disaster. This past week, was week one of the charity's First Day Back Challenge. Baby2Baby have set themselves the goal of providing more than $1 million in clothing for children whose families have been struggling throughout the pandemic. It was absolutely fantastic to see the photos of Meghan and Harry away from their computer screens, and out on the streets interacting with families and their children. In this episode of The Hamilton Review, Dr. Bob and Dr. Cara Natterson have a very insightful and important discussion about raising boys. Dr. Natterson has written a new book entitled: "Decoding Boys: New Science Behind the Subtle Art of Raising Sons." They discuss everything from how to deal with puberty to how to protect and limit your son's media consumption. This is a must listen episode for all parents raising sons. CARA NATTERSON, MD, is a pediatrician, consultant, and New York Times bestselling author of puberty and parenting books. Her newest book Decoding Boys: New Science Behind the Subtle Art of Raising Sons, debuted in February 2020. A graduate of Harvard College and Johns Hopkins Medical School, Cara trained in pediatrics at University of California at San Francisco. She began practicing medicine in her home town of Los Angeles, joining Tenth Street Pediatrics in Santa Monica where she cared for thousands of infants, children and teenagers. Eight years later, Cara founded Worry Proof Consulting, a practice that gives parents time their primary doctors often don't have to cover medical, behavioral, and parenting issues in depth. Cara also began traveling the country speaking to both kids and parents about taking ownership of their health and wellness. Whether in the office or on the stage, she has a unique ability to make cutting- edge research understandable, even entertaining. Cara is as passionate about community-based programs and innovation as she is about health and wellness. She is the Chair of the Board of Starlight Children's Foundation, a 30-year old charity that brings technology, entertainment, and joy to children in nearly every hospital in America. She is also on the Medical Board of Advisors for The Honest Company, serves as an Advisor to Zemcar and has held seats on the boards of Baby2Baby and The John Thomas Dye School. But more than any of this, Cara's greatest feat to date is parenting her teenage daughter and her tween-age son with her husband Paul, a beloved cardiologist in Los Angeles. Young Living Essential Oils promotes the wisdom of Emerson that, “Every wall is a door.” Not only do you see it on their tee-shirts, but the Utah company exemplifies that spirit of engagement as it addresses the coronavirus. Shante Schroeder, vice president of brand marketing is here to tell us more. SHANTE SCHROEDER At Young Living Essential Oils our focus is on protecting employees and serving those in need. We have implemented a flexible work-from-home schedule for hundreds of employees. At the same time, we've hired some 250 temporary employees to help meet increasing demand. To serve the community, we're providing weekly donations of hand sanitizer from our Thieves product line to local healthcare facilities, police stations, fire departments, school districts, and vital workers. We're using our 3D printers to make masks for the Utah County Sheriff's Department and supporting Meals on Wheels for seniors. For children who depend on school lunches, Young Living is assisting the Jordan Education Foundation Central Principal's Pantry, and we've proudly donated $300,000 in baby wipes, bars of soap, toothpaste, and more through the Baby2Baby program. OnSide Youth Zone creates state of the art ‘Youth Zones’ for disadvantaged communities to provide children and adults aged 8 to 19 (and up to age 25 with a disability) with a safe and inspiring place to be for mentorship, support, and guidance.Participation in youth zones is proven to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour by half or more. Earlier this year, The Duke was joined by The Duchess of Sussex in opening an OnSide club in Birkenhead. On April 10, it was announced that Prince Harry is collaborating with Oprah Winfrey and AppleTV on a mental health series that is going to be released in 2020. Both Mrs Winfrey and the Duke are co-creators and executive producers on the project. They’ve been working on it for several months already and had several meetings in London. Natalie Rebot is a Google software engineer turned entrepreneur that created a new device which can be used with your smartphone to upgrade traditional bedtime story telling. Moonlite is described as the first mini bedtime story projector reader that attaches to almost any mobile phone and uses its flash to project imagery onto any surface. The idea grew organically from Natalie's bedtime ritual with her 3-year-old daughter, Chloe. After using the flash on her smartphone to create shadowplay. It wasn't long before she realized that she could take their routine to another level to create stories and scenes using her phone and innovative design. Natalie first appeared on my podcast 2 years ago on episode 160. Following a massively successful launch on Kickstarter.com, Moonlite, the #1 children’s reading toy, is back on Kickstarter with a brand new limited-edition Rose Gold story projector, all in efforts to help strengthen children’s literacy across the nation. Founder Natalie Rebot launched her initial prototype and concept on Kickstarter and funding goals were overwhelmingly surpassed, with more than 60M views to date on the product’s original video. Tapping into that existing momentum, the brand is setting out on a mission to raise awareness of the benefits of reading and ultimately give back to the community. To achieve this, Moonlite is partnering with Baby2Baby, a non-profit organization that provides children living in poverty with diapers, clothing and all the basic necessities that every child deserves. For each Rose Gold Moonlite pledged for, Moonlite will donate the equivalent of 10 books to Baby2Baby with the goal of bringing the magic of story time to over 60,000 low-income children this holiday season.
