Earle Nelson, known as “The Gorilla Killer,” was an American serial killer who terrorized the United States and Canada in the 1920s. Born in 1897, he exhibited signs of violent and erratic behavior from an early age, possibly due to a childhood head injury. Nelson mostly targeted landladies and women offering rooms for rent, using … Continue reading Episode 443: Serial Killer Earle Nelson – The Gorilla Man

On episode 221, we welcome Randy Fertel to discuss the rich history of improv, hot cognition and cold cognition, the importance of a liberal arts education for creativity, Trump's charisma and use of off the cuff comments to charm his audience, the neuroscience of creativity, Saturday Night Live and how those comedians embodied the dark side of improv, improv as a symbol of authenticity and why that connects with an audience, trauma and reintegration into the community, and how to cultivate a “yes and” mindset. Randy Fertel is a writer, scholar, and philanthropist, best known for his work exploring the intersections of improvisation, culture, and politics. Fertel holds a PhD in English and American literature from Harvard and has taught at institutions such as Harvard and Tulane. His previous works include A Taste for Chaos: The Art of Literary Improvisation and The Gorilla Man and the Empress of Steak, a memoir of his family's New Orleans culinary legacy. Welcome to a tale that will chill you to the bone. A man who preyed on mostly older women who were running boarding houses. His sick and depraved desires would leave several cities and states from the USA to Canada in fear.
Joshua’s old college friend John suggested we listen to “The Gorilla Man” from The Shadow. So we did! Thanks, John! The story features a man who takes care of a large gorilla at the zoo. He finds himself growing to resemble the beast in his care, and the more he does, the further he retreats […]
Produced by KQD 90.7, 89.5 & 89.7FM In the new book, “Winging It: Improv's Power and Peril in the Time of Trump”, the author explores popular cultural and public affairs, ranging deftly from the unmediated experience in Fred Astaire's tap dancing, Frans Hal's brush strokes, hook-up culture, psychedelic trips, social media, and Hamilton's hip-hop to, last, though not least, the performative and demagogic posturing of Donald Trump. The gesture all improvisations share is “I will create this on the fly,” or as Trump has stated, “my gut knows more than my brains” This defies rationality and elevates embodied emotions, instinct, and intuition that challenges our assumption that everything of value depends upon long study, tradition, and hard work. Claiming to be free of serious purpose … improvisation only pursues pleasure. Or so it says. What happens when a young woman begins to suspect her sophisticated Uncle Charlie– who happens to be staying in her family's home for a visit– is the notorious “Merry Widow” killer? That's the question addressed by Hitchcock's 1943 classic “Shadow of a Doubt.” The thriller is reportedly Hitchcock's favorite movie, one that features Teresa Wright as the strong, plucky heroine, and Joseph Cotten in the role of the charming, sociopathic villain. Tragically, however, the serial killer upon whom this movie is loosely based was even darker and his crimes more horrific than the one Hitchcock brought to life. In this episode we delve into the true crime behind “Shadow of a Doubt,” the murderous spree of Earle Leonard Nelson– aka “The Gorilla Man” and “The Dark Strangler”-- who has been described as one of the most prolific and feared serial killers of the early 20th century. *Please note that this episode may not be suitable for all audiences. There's a mouthful of memories in every family – especially if your family is in the food biz! On this week's show, we hear from New Orleanians whose parents and grandparents gave them a passion for food and a love for their community. We begin with writer and philanthropist Randy Fertel, whose 2011 memoir, The Gorilla Man and the Empress of Steak, tells the story of his larger-than-life parents. His mother, Ruth U. Fertel, founded Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, now a worldwide establishment, right here in the Crescent City. Then, we learn about New Orleans' famous muffuletta sandwich, which is said to have been invented at Central Grocery, the Italian deli established in the French Quarter in 1906. We bring you an oral history from NOLA Life Stories, in which third-generation owner Salvatore "Tommy" Tusa describes the evolution of this family business, as told to Mark Cave of the Historic New Orleans Collection. And finally, we get the story of Barrow's Catfish, which has been a cornerstone of the Hollygrove neighborhood since 1943. Deirdre Barrow Johnson and her husband, Kenneth discuss their family's legacy – one that began with a fried catfish sandwich sold from Deirdre's grandfather's barroom door. Susan writes “In 1962, I was only 12 at the time of the encounter. This happened in Crandon, Wi and I have been reaching out to find others in this state who have seen a Bigfoot. I can give a very detailed description of the day, his face which I thought was so horrendous at that time and his hands, etc. something many people don't get a good look at. This event happened late afternoon just before the sunset. It was very confusing as I thought I saw a gorilla man or else a freak that escaped from a circus freak show. It was an event that made me depressed and gave me many sleepless nights/weekdays with nightmares. I am attaching an AI picture that closely resembles the facial structure of the type I saw.”

In Part 2, Tracy talks about how Earle goes to Canada and continues murdering women. After two murders in Canada, many outfit changes, visits to several towns, an attempt to cross the border back into the US, and an actual town mob hunting him down, he is apprehended by authorities. In Part 1, Tracy talks about the origins of Earle Nelson, his traumatic upbringing, both parents dying, his multiple traumatic brain injuries, and bouts of syphilis (which offered possible mercury and arsenic poisonings as treatment), his insatiable sexual appetite, and his overt religious fervor. Nelson had serval aliases and traveled all across the US to strangle women to death and sexually assault them post-mortem. There is a very long list of murders attributed to him and he worked in so quickly and randomly, he was very hard to pin down by authorities. For research, Tracy referenced two books: The Laughing Gorilla by Robert Graysmith and The Gorilla Man Strangler Case by Alvin EsauThe cocktail for this episode is The Dirty Wanderer. Florida calls in and lets me know about the Candace joke and Mylar joke and Dee joke, deez nutz. The sound effects guy comes back and opens with Peaky Blinders. Drive by Night Show is a drive around call in talk show. Watch the show live on TikTok at https://www.tiktok.com/@alltherides Thursdays from 8pm to 11pm central time. Episode number 15 starts off with a regular caller from Pennsylvania, we move to another regular from New York and eventually end up with Michigan and almond milk. Dalton from Kansas calls in and reminds me that I was supposed to call him. Ontario calls in and we talk a little about the Oscars and Promising Young Woman. Massachusetts calls in and we talk about if we should end the handshake or not? Gorilla Man checks in and tells a story about how his cousin was looking for mushrooms and was bit by a rattlesnake and died. The Virgin Islands call in and unfortunately the call ended abruptly. I was then sent $10 and was urged to go to Raising Cane's and eat chicken fingers on the air. Oklahoma called in on the way and we talked about racing horses in Dubai. Lastly, a guy from California calls in and has a bunch of sound effects that are hilarious. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Earle Leonard Nelson, also known in the media as the "Gorilla Man," the "Gorilla Killer," and the "Dark Strangler," was an American serial killer, rapist, and necrophile. He was the first known American serial sex murderer of the twentieth century.
Dzisiejszy podcast poświęcam w całości pierwszemu znanemu amerykańskiemu mordercy seksualnemu XX wieku. Człowiek wielu pseudonimów, choćby takich jak "Gorilla Man", Gorilla Killer, Dark Strangler. Czym zapracował sobie na swoje przydomki? Był seryjnym morderca, gwałcicielem i nekrofilem. No i wyglądem- był dużym postawimy mężczyzną z dość dużymi dłońmi. Dlatego właśnie został ochrzczony przydomkiem Gorilla Man. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/8podcast/support

Welcome back to Beyond the Mask, where host Melanie Peterson joins her passion for true crime with her love of all things horror. In this episode, Melanie dives into the case of Earle Leonard Nelson, known as the Dark Strangler and the Gorilla Man. His horrific crimes would loosely inspire the Merry Widow Murderer in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1943 thriller, Shadow of a Doubt.
