Do your social connections impact the food you eat? What you eat matters, especially for your gray matter. It's something you've heard me say a lot, but nutrition is about more than simply what you eat. It's how you eat and who you're eating those meals with. Every food choice, from a quick snack to an entire meal, has a huge impact on your overall health. And those decisions are influenced by the people you love. I'm excited to welcome Shawn Stevenson back to our show. Shawn is the creator and host of the top health podcast in the U.S., The Model Health Show. He's also the bestselling author of a brand-new cookbook, Eat Smarter Family Cookbook: 100 Delicious Recipes to Transform Your Health, Happiness, and Connection. Everything you eat, even what food you crave, is deeply entrenched in your upbringing and your surroundings. Before you can change those habits long-term, you have to change the culture you have around food and eating. Listen in as Shawn talks about how to change the way eat so that you can transform not only your body and brain, but the health of your entire family. Next, Michael sits down with Shawn Stevenson. Shawn is the author of the national bestseller, Eat Smarter and the international bestseller, Sleep Smarter. He's also the host and creator of The Model Health Show, featured as the number #1 health podcast in the U.S. Shawn's new book, Eat Smarter: The Family Cookbook, features 100 family-friendly recipes plus the latest scientific findings on nutrition and health to help you boost your metabolism and up-level your energy to start living a happier life. In this deeply informative and revelatory conversation, Michael and Shawn discuss: –How a “one size” approach doesn't fit at all when it comes to diet and food culture, and that catering to one's own personality and unique metabolic fingerprint is the future of wellness and medicine –The studies revealing that families who eat at least three meals together per week consume more whole foods–and less ultra-processed foods–and have improved health outcomes, and that employees who are able to go home and eat dinner with their families experienced higher work morale and productivity –That the number one determinant of how long we live is our relationships and how family meals can have a unifying effect on family relationships –Smarter strategies for lower-cost healthy food shopping, minimizing food waste, selecting healthier cookware, transforming kitchen culture—and so, so much more! There's a mouthful of memories in every family – especially if your family is in the food biz! On this week's show, we hear from New Orleanians whose parents and grandparents gave them a passion for food and a love for their community. We begin with writer and philanthropist Randy Fertel, whose 2011 memoir, The Gorilla Man and the Empress of Steak, tells the story of his larger-than-life parents. His mother, Ruth U. Fertel, founded Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, now a worldwide establishment, right here in the Crescent City. Then, we learn about New Orleans' famous muffuletta sandwich, which is said to have been invented at Central Grocery, the Italian deli established in the French Quarter in 1906. We bring you an oral history from NOLA Life Stories, in which third-generation owner Salvatore "Tommy" Tusa describes the evolution of this family business, as told to Mark Cave of the Historic New Orleans Collection. And finally, we get the story of Barrow's Catfish, which has been a cornerstone of the Hollygrove neighborhood since 1943. Deirdre Barrow Johnson and her husband, Kenneth discuss their family's legacy – one that began with a fried catfish sandwich sold from Deirdre's grandfather's barroom door. Meet our latest Virtual Book Tour guest: Susie Luo! We sat down to discuss her debut novel Paper Names, her experience immigrating to the United States as a child, and the best things about NYC. And if you need some advice on what gift to bring to your next event, Susie Luo can help in our game “Bearing Gifts” (hint: it's usually wine). Paper Names is set in New York and China over three decades from three different perspectives. Tony is a Chinese-born engineer turned Manhattan doorman; Tammy is Tony's daughter who we follow through adulthood; and Oliver is a white lawyer who lives in the building where Tony works. An unexpected act of violence causes their lives to intertwine in this propulsive story of family, identity, and the American experience. Get Paper Names at bookofthemonth.com. Recently, I was inspired by a number of things to re-release this conversation that I had with Phil Rosenthal from his Netflix show Somebody Feed Phil started, which just released its sixth season. Aside from that Phil, is best known as the creator, writer, and executive producer for the sitcom Everybody loves Raymond. In this conversation we talk about the importance of travel, food and relationships, and the creative process of pulling from your life to make things. All of this felt like a perfect storm for right now to re-release this episode. I was inspired not only by seeing season 6 of Somebody Feed Phil released, but also thinking ahead to American Thanksgiving coming up soon, and the food aspect of that as well as I was talking to a friend, I recounted all the traveling that I had done this year, more traveling than I've done in. And of course the great food I had while traveling. As we wrap up our food series and celebrate of the release of Jen's very first cookbook, we have another first right here in this Feeding These People Food series: Jen's mom, her brother, and one of her sisters give us all the dish on the history of food in the King family in their very first appearance together on For the Love, for the last episode of this series! Jana, Drew, Cortney, and Jen weigh in on the good, bad and ugly of their family meals growing up, their favorite around the table memories, and the foods that, well, just failed. From Hamburger Helper, to Veg-all, to Drew's penchant for boiling cokes he would pinch from the garage in the Louisiana heat, it's a wonder any of us that grew up in the 80's survived. You'll be riveted by their spirited discussion about ranch dressing, the time when Jen's dad decided to eat healthier and Jana started cooking everything with oat bran, and the highly debated pot pie incident–plus a few other family controversies over what really happened in the King kitchen. Stick around to the end when we hear each siblings' recollection of their favorite meals and their assessment of how they are doing these days feeding their own families. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! Thought-Provoking Quotes “I don't know how Larry survived on the food that I was able to bring out of that teeny, teeny, tiny kitchen, which wasn't much. And then I didn't know what I was doing anyway. But having all of you precious children–it was just a matter of getting something on the table that you all would eat.” - Jen's mom, Jana “The dish I remember mom making all the time every Sunday after church was pot roast. There'd be a pot roast in the oven as soon as we walked in. The house smelled great. And today, every time I smell a really good pot roast, I feel like I need to sing a quick hymn and then eat dinner.” - Cortney, Jen's sister “What I got every year for my birthday, because again, much like you all, I'm not a big sweet guy–I would prefer a handful of peanuts or something salty and savory. But what I did love is mom would make me a loaf of banana nut bread, and a loaf of pumpkin bread every year for my birthday.” - Jen's brother, Drew Resources Mentioned in This Episode Ree Drummond's Pot Pie Recipe Connect with Jen!Jen's website Jen's Instagram Jen's Twitter Jen's Facebook Jen's YouTube
