Have you ever wondered where your beliefs about food, weight, and body image actually came from? Many people assume their eating disorder, body dissatisfaction, or disordered eating patterns developed entirely from personal experiences. In reality, family food rules, generational diet culture, and inherited beliefs about bodies often shape our relationship with food long before we recognize what's happening. In this episode of Dr. Marianne-Land, I explore how eating disorders can develop within family systems, why body shame often travels across generations, and what happens when you begin questioning the food and body rules you inherited. Through the story of a fictional client named Esme, we examine how childhood messages about weight, dieting, health, and appearance can become deeply embedded in adulthood, even when they were never spoken directly. Whether you're recovering from anorexia, binge eating disorder, bulimia, ARFID, chronic dieting, or longstanding body image struggles, this conversation offers a compassionate look at the ways family history and diet culture can influence recovery. What You'll Learn In this episode, you'll learn how family food rules shape eating behaviors and body image across generations, why children often absorb beliefs about food and weight without realizing it, and how multigenerational diet culture can contribute to eating disorders and disordered eating. You'll also learn why inherited beliefs often feel like facts, how anti-fat bias and cultural beauty standards influence family conversations about bodies, and why recovery frequently involves examining long-held assumptions about food, health, worth, and appearance. Why Family Systems Matter in Eating Disorder Recovery Eating disorders rarely develop in a vacuum. Many people grow up surrounded by messages about dieting, weight loss, body size, exercise, and food morality that seem completely normal at the time. Those messages often become part of a family's culture, shaping how people think about hunger, fullness, health, self-worth, and belonging. When clients begin recovery, they often discover that some of the rules guiding their relationship with food did not originate with them. Instead, those beliefs may have traveled through multiple generations, influenced by diet culture, weight stigma, sexism, anti-fat bias, food scarcity, trauma, and larger social systems. Recognizing these patterns can create opportunities for healing, self-compassion, and greater freedom around food. Who This Episode Is For This episode is for anyone recovering from an eating disorder, struggling with body image, questioning family food rules, or trying to understand how childhood experiences continue to affect their relationship with food. It may be especially helpful for people navigating anorexia recovery, binge eating recovery, bulimia recovery, ARFID recovery, chronic dieting, weight cycling, body image concerns, or the emotional impact of growing up in a family where weight and appearance received significant attention. What a week — full of family, food, and me officially entering my old‑school era. I'll recap my birthday, including the watch that is bringing back a much simpler time. A waitress convinced us to try caramel‑covered cheese curds, and against all logic, they were absolutely incredible. And back at home, the cats are acting up and the jealousy levels are at an all‑time high which is giving full feline-WWE energy. And yes, I absolutely talk about Punch, the monkey who is absolutley the coolest and cutest. In this in-depth interview, Jonathan Kim discusses bringing Min to life in THE MOTHER AND THE BEAR, a quietly powerful and funny film about family, identity, and cultural memory. Kim shares what first drew him to the project, how he emotionally connected with Min, and why the tension between parents and children feels so universal. In this 1on1, we explore preserving culture while moving forward, food as an expression of love, and the film's resonant idea of “kindness in the cold.” THE MOTHER AND THE BEAR is in select theatres on Friday, January 9th, 2026.

Send us a textHow does a CPA from New York end up co-running one of South Florida's fastest-growing bagel brands? Meet Adam Shidlofsky, co-owner of Mitch's Bagels, the family-built business redefining what a “New York-style” bagel means in Florida.Adam joins host Brenda Popritkin to talk about building a legacy with his father — from Mitch's original old-school diner concept to today's sleek, tech-driven delis in Flagler Village, Hallandale, and Weston.Together, they cover everything from airy-fluffy dough philosophy (“they don't count as carbs if you believe it”) to family values, generational work ethics, and how South Florida's mix of New York transplants and hungry locals has shaped the brand's identity.Notable Quotes“My dad knew nothing about bagels when he started — but he learned everything, from baking to branding.”“During COVID, I convinced him I could bring something new: marketing, social media, and a modern twist. One night over wine, he finally said, ‘Okay, go bake bagels at 4 a.m.' — and I did.”“Seeing my dad finally take a holiday and enjoy his 60s — that's one of my proudest accomplishments.”“Everyone says they're from New York and ‘know bagels.' Down here, we're proving you can find a great one anywhere — if there's love in the dough.”From carb myths to family truths, this episode proves that passion and grit rise just like dough, with a little heat, patience, and plenty of flavor.
When feeding your family feels confusing and chaotic, this episode is your reset. Functional-medicine dietitian Ali Miller (RD, LD, CDE) shows how to move from “immediate” choices to environmental shifts to true habit rewiring—simplifying dinner with 5–7-minute protein sears, sheet-pan veggies, and one slow-cook a week. We talk “God foods” vs. ultra-processed products, why kids' moods track their blood sugar, and how to make your kitchen the hearth again—less frantic, more joyful. Ali's brand-new book, Naturally Nourished Kids turns big ideas into doable family routines (like bone-broth queso, cabbage chips, and rainbow sheet-pans). We also dig into guiding teens toward ownership (guided choices, smart carb-plus-protein pairings), and how probiotics + mineral-rich bone broth support calmer brains and sturdier immune systems. For a deeper dive into food-as-medicine and anxiety, explore Ali's Anti-Anxiety Diet resources and her Naturally Nourished Podcast. On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Joshua Silverstein, an award-winning actor, comic, writer, allergy-culture advocate and food lover. Silverstein's creativity clearly lends itself well to the kitchen, especially since he needs to work around his many allergies. “My relationship with food has been challenging, it's been exciting, it's led to a lot of interesting stories,” he explains. The executive director of Cazadero performing arts camp, he is also a staple writer-performer at The Braid Jewish Theater Company. Silverstein's The Braid's shows include “True Colors,” “What A Surprise” and the upcoming “Hold Me, Heal Me,” as well as a solo show. “Because I'm a father with a multicultural family that leaves room for a lot of experimentation [especially since] my children also have allergies,” he says. Silverstein explains how he gets to be a “mad scientist” in the kitchen. Combine the mindset of exploration with being inclusive. “The kitchen should be a place of play and fun, and that's a privilege,” he believes. “Keep trying new things [and] keep being curious about what's on the other side of people's palates.” Joshua Silverstein talks about his upbringing, creativity in the kitchen, and how everything his family eats is a community project. He also shares about his grandmother's latke recipe, which you can get at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. There are also shout outs to Natasha Feldman, NoshwithTash.com, author of “The Dinner Party Project.” Learn more at JoshuaSilverstein.com and CazFamilyCamp.org. Do your social connections impact the food you eat? What you eat matters, especially for your gray matter. It's something you've heard me say a lot, but nutrition is about more than simply what you eat. It's how you eat and who you're eating those meals with. Every food choice, from a quick snack to an entire meal, has a huge impact on your overall health. And those decisions are influenced by the people you love. I'm excited to welcome Shawn Stevenson back to our show. Shawn is the creator and host of the top health podcast in the U.S., The Model Health Show. He's also the bestselling author of a brand-new cookbook, Eat Smarter Family Cookbook: 100 Delicious Recipes to Transform Your Health, Happiness, and Connection. Everything you eat, even what food you crave, is deeply entrenched in your upbringing and your surroundings. Before you can change those habits long-term, you have to change the culture you have around food and eating. Listen in as Shawn talks about how to change the way eat so that you can transform not only your body and brain, but the health of your entire family.
