Christine Caine's Life & Leadership Podcast with Propel Women
Lead with purpose with a degree from Trevecca. Find out more here. In this episode, Christine Caine and Priscilla Shirer offer a wealth of wisdom about surrendering our lives fully to the plan and purposes of God, no matter the call or the cost. We often find ourselves wondering if we are hearing from God correctly, if we are overthinking, and what might happen if we “get it wrong.” In today's conversation, Christine and Priscilla bring practical methods for checking-in with God and moving forward with confidence. SHOW NOTES: Daily Surrender Jesus says, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Priscilla remarks that to take up our cross “means something has to die. We have to be willing to loosen our grip on the things that we hold dear for the sake of making sure that nothing and no one is in first place over him.” An Anchored Soul Christine asks how we can know if something has taken first place in our lives. Priscilla gives us three practical indicators: 1. Our time. If we aren't spending time with the Lord it's because he's not a priority, not because we don't have time. 2. Our treasures. Are we giving to the Lord and his work? 3. Our significance. What have I tied myself to and how can I ask the Lord to help me recalibrate? A Mother's Prayer For mothers, surrendering their children can be hard. Priscilla reminds us that we don't have control over older children, but we can pray the Holy Spirit speaks to them, works in them, protects them, and transforms their hearts in ways only God can. Prayer calls down heaven's power onto our earthly circumstances, reaping a mighty harvest from the petitions sown. Follow Priscilla @PriscillaShirer and check out her new movie, The Forge. She was a beautiful surprise to her parents, George and Elizabeth Stevenson, since her mom was 49 when Betty was born. She grew up loved and cherished by her parents and her four older siblings. Hazel, her older sister by 25 years, was a second mother to her. By the time of her graduation from Albia High School, Betty was dating the love of her life, Ron. In Albia, they were known as Babe and Betty Jean. Ron was two years older and enlisted in the Army during the Korean War. While Ron was on leave in December 1952, they planned a wedding in less than two weeks and were married December 26, 1952. Betty went home to Jesus on their 72nd anniversary. Betty moved to Des Moines for work while Ron was in the service and this is where they made their home following his discharge. Betty became trained as a stenographer and was adept at the lost art of shorthand. She worked for the state before she began working for the Rock Island Railroad, which later became the Chicago Northwestern. She worked for the railroad for over 30 years. Ron and Betty had two daughters, Ronda and Meribeth. Betty was a devoted mom, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved her son-in-laws as sons. She was happiest when we all could be together. She would do anything for each of us. Betty loved Jesus and her life was built around her faith. Early in their marriage, Ron and Betty began attending Central Gospel Chapel which later became Creekside Church. Betty's closest friends, her buddies, were a part of her church family. Betty made friends wherever she went. She started going to the YMCA and later began teaching water aerobics. Some very special friendships were made and this group continues to meet together. She only had four months at Kennybrook Village but had already made an impact with staff and residents. Betty loved the outdoors and being active. She loved to walk, to be in her swimming pool and, if you really wanted her to be happy, you would take her on a boat ride. She enjoyed waterskiing and snowskiing. Betty left this earth December 26, 2024. She will be deeply missed by her precious husband, Ron, Ronda and Rick Gentosi, Meribeth and Doug Tenney, 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A public visitation will be held on Monday, December 30, 2024, at Creekside Church (2743 82nd Pl, Urbandale, IA 50322) from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., with a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held at Sunny Hill Cemetery, in Grimes, IA, following the luncheon. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Creekside Church.

There's a reason Psalm 37:4 is so famous. I mean, who doesn't want to hear about getting the desires of your heart? I think that's amazing. Even when someone doesn't understand the context or even the implications of this verse. I love even more that it doesn't talk about duty or obedience (though those are important!). It says to delight yourself in the Lord. Have fun with Him. Don't take yourself and all that is happening too seriously. DELIGHT yourself in Him. Then He will give you — with His own delight, I believe — the things you are longing for. What's in your heart. Get an ad-free feed of the podcast with a monthly contribution of any amount! Judson Van DeVenter was an art teacher and artist when he became a layman in the Episcopal-Methodist Church. He was passionate about his work, but also actively devoted to the evangelistic meetings held at his church. Seeing his abilities, Judson's friends urged him to quit his job and become an evangelist. For five years, he wavered between the ministry and seeking recognition as an artist. He felt God's call on his heart, but it was a difficult choice to set aside his career and artistic talent. Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” One of the most challenging things we can do as humans is to surrender our lives to God. We want to control our lives and make our own decisions, but true freedom comes when we surrender to Christ. Judson Van DeVenter, or “JW” as his friends called him, finally surrendered his life completely to Christ, and traveled extensively throughout the United States, England, and Scotland as an evangelist—visiting art museums and studying painting as he shared the Good News about Jesus. Along the way he wrote the beloved hymn “I Surrender All,” among other songs, and was credited later in life as being a positive influence on the work of Billy Graham, who counted him as a friend and enjoyed time in his home for fellowship and singing. When we surrender to Christ, we allow Him to take control of our lives. We become more focused on following His will, and less concerned about our own desires. We become more dependent on Him and less dependent on ourselves. Let's pray. Dear Lord Jesus, today I surrender all to you. Let me lean more on you, and less on my own desires. I give you my life. In Jesus' name, amen. Change your shirt, and you can change the world! Save 15% Off your entire purchase of faith-based apparel + gifts at Kerusso.com with code KDD15.

Born on a farm, Judson Van DeVenter learned to paint, studied art, and became an art teacher. God, however, had a different plan for him. Friends valued his work in church and urged him to go into evangelism. Judson felt God calling him too, but it was hard for him to give up his love for teaching art. He wrestled with God, but “at last,” he wrote, “the pivotal hour of my life came, and I surrendered all.” We can’t imagine Abraham’s heartbreak when God called him to surrender his son Isaac. In the wake of God’s command to “sacrifice him there as a burnt offering” (Genesis 22:2) we ask ourselves what precious thing God is calling us to sacrifice. We know that God ultimately spared Isaac (v. 12), and yet the point is made: Abraham was willing to surrender what was most precious to him. He trusted God to provide in the midst of a most difficult calling. We say we love God, but are we willing to sacrifice what’s dearest to us? Judson Van DeVenter followed God’s call into evangelism and later penned the beloved hymn “I Surrender All.” In time, God called Judson back into teaching. One of his students was a young man named Billy Graham. God’s plan for our lives has purposes we can’t imagine. He longs for us to be willing to surrender what is dearest. Seems that’s the least we can do. After all, He sacrificed for us His only begotten Son.

Prayer is oxygen for the Christian. Prayer is our means for communing and communicating with the one who made us. Its importance cannot be overstated. There is a price and a prize of prayer. The price is persistence. The prize is His presence. When Jesus teaches the disciples how to pray, He continues and reminds them to keep on asking, to keep on seeking, and to keep on knocking. Jesus is teaching us to be persistent in prayer. The prize of the prayer is not getting what we are asking for. The prize is His presence with us always. Listen to this sermon about the price and prize of prayer in the third part of our I Surrender All series. Satan tempts our flesh in order to hinder our spiritual. Jesus sympathizes with us because He knows the temptation we face each day; Satan did the very same thing to Jesus. In 2024, we are going to experience seasons of exhaustion. In those moments of weakness, the enemy is going to show up and try to appeal to our flesh to satisfy us temporarily. How do we fight the ways of the enemy? We look to what Jesus did when Satan tempted Him; we fight the ways of the enemy with the Word of God. As followers of Christ, we already possess everything we need in order to fight the enemy as we have the Holy Spirit in us. As we fast, pray, and read together, be empowered to discern what the enemy is doing in and around you and also have the confidence to know you have what it takes to fight the enemy.
