Most guides give you the same three answers: Roma. Condesa. Polanco. Those neighborhoods are popular for good reasons, but Mexico City is much more complicated than that. The right neighborhood depends on what you actually care about. Are you looking for nightlife? Do you want a large expat community? Would you rather live somewhere quiet and residential? Is public transportation important? Are you worried about earthquake risk? Are you buying real estate and hoping for appreciation? Are you planning to use the property part-time and rent it on Airbnb? Or do you simply want somewhere comfortable to live without paying a premium for the most famous address? Mexico City offers very different answers depending on your priorities. A neighborhood with excellent nightlife may be noisy. A neighborhood with excellent earthquake characteristics may be farther from the social center of the city. Transportation: Do Not Just Look at the Metro Map One of the easiest mistakes to make when choosing a Mexico City neighborhood is looking at a transit map and assuming a neighborhood is convenient because a metro line appears nearby. That is not always true. What matters is the actual walking distance from your building to the station you will use. A 15- or 20-minute walk can make the difference between using the metro every day and relying mostly on Uber or other transportation. Coyoacán Coyoacán is a good example. The neighborhood is famous and well connected to the broader city, but the historic center itself is not directly on a metro line. Stations such as Coyoacán, Viveros, and General Anaya are located around the edges of the area. Depending on where you live, the walk can be substantial. San Ángel San Ángel has a similar problem. Escandón is beginning to absorb some of the same energy at a lower price point. Mexico City’s building standards changed substantially after the devastating 1985 earthquake. For that reason, building age deserves careful attention. A practical approach is to favor newer buildings when possible and investigate the structural history of anything older. Useful questions include: What year was the building constructed? Was it damaged in the 2017 earthquake? Has it been structurally inspected? Is there a current dictamen estructural? Were repairs or reinforcements performed after 2017? A newer, properly engineered building on weaker soil can still be a reasonable choice. Likewise, good soil does not eliminate the need to inspect the building itself. We explore how local news remains a cornerstone of an informed society, the wisdom she's gained as a working mom, and her strategies for leaving newsroom stress at the office so she can be fully present at home. If your child gets swimmers ear often and you know they do not have a punctured ear drum, you can use equal parts white vinegar and rubbing alcohol as a drying solution. El Cocodrilo, bajo la conducción de Sergio Almazán, hace un recorrido por uno de los barrios emblemáticos de la Ciudad de México: la Zona Rosa. La Zona Rosa fue, desde sus inicios en los años cincuenta, un espacio bohemio y alternativo. Artistas, intelectuales, estudiantes, ejecutivos, empresarios jóvenes, y en general, todo aquel que buscaba buen ambiente y tolerancia se acercaba a este barrio, entonces de moda. Personajes como la poetisa Pita Amor, el escritor Carlos Monsiváis y el pintor José Luis Cuevas, quien alguna vez dijo que la Zona Rosa era llamada así porque “es demasiado tímida para ser roja y demasiado atrevida para ser blanca”, dieron identidad a espacio de la ciudad.
