In Tynwald last week Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse had two motions on the Order Paper. The first related to DoI's refusal to allow the outgoing airport director to attend a hearing of the Economic Review Committee and the second related to a report by the Select Committee on the Regulation of the Steam Packet Company. The Steam Packet is of course wholly owned by the Isle of Man Government but is kept at arm's length from government - except of course for when political pressure builds and the arm becomes considerably shorter.
The Treasury Minister has a lot on his plate at the moment as the impact of Trumpian economics sends shock waves around the world. An estimated 5% has been knocked off the value of Isle of Man Government reserves in recent days so how will that affect Treasury predictions in this year's budget? Alex Allinson appears unflappable but is he and his Treasury team doing enough to bring the deficit between government income and expenditure back to more manageable levels. Should we be concerned about public finances? And if they must fiddle while Rome burns could they at least pick a better tune?
All the latest as we hear which local authorities will be going to the polls next month.Plus, reaction to the latest Assisted Dying development, and the chief minister tells us what he knows as the CEO of Isle of Man Government is set to leave at the end of the month. All that and much more on Update with Lewis Foster for 26 March, 2025.
- The Isle of Man Government's most senior civil servant has announced he's resigning, after only being in the job for 18 months.- A leading medical specialist says there needs to be more political oversight in the healthcare system.- As the new 20mph zones roll out across the island we'll hear how some areas in Cardiff have reverted back to 30.
The Lieutenant Governor is offering 19-25 year olds the chance to immerse themselves in the work of Government House for a day. Participants will experience the breadth of Sir John Lorimer's work, typically through meetings, visits to Island events, and the day-to-day work of the Government House team. On Perspective this week we hear from Sir John, and his first guest Emily Bridson. So, what has the Lieutenant Governor ever done for us? Apart from wearing a fancy hat and sitting on Tynwald Hill once a year … acting as a conduit between the King, Tynwald and the Isle of Man Government, …. hosting dignitaries and the royal family when they visit, … and bringing a range of people together at events at government house …. opening events buildings that sort of thing …
Education, Health and Housing will not be on the agenda at this week's Government Conference. The Chief Minister tells Perspective why not as well as explaining why people should attend the Conference. Chris Thomas ponders the value of three years worth of government strategies and policies and offers some suggestions to deliver success. Isle of Man Government is facing some serious financial challenges but do Ministers have the resolve to address them?
Christy DeHaven speaks to space entrepreneur Chris Stott, whose recent endeavours have taken Manx tech to the Moon and back. This is just the latest in many 'out of this world' achievements for Chris, who is a founding member of the British Space Education Council and remains active in supporting space education initiatives. He is also the Honorary Representative of the Isle of Man Government to the Space Community.
On last week's Perspective the Treasury Minister made a valiant attempt to defend the Isle of Man Government's Tax Strategy. The Strategy was presented to Tynwald this week, not for approval but merely to be received, but even that modest objective came close to being derailed by an amendment from David Ashford. On Perspective we hear from several disgruntled Tynwald members who had hoped for much more in the strategy. We also hear why Tynwald members didn't think that it was necessary for international standards to be applied to the size of Keys constituencies. Tynwald was certainly sailing through troubled waters this week.
John Webster is an economist, business owner and Chairman of the Manx Technology Group as well as an independent adviser to various investment funds and involved with the UN as an economic adviser to small islands. He was also economic adviser to the Isle of Man Government back in the 1980s so he's well qualified to talk about the economic situation in the Isle of Man. On Perspective John Webster joins me Phil Gawne to talk about the Budget, the newly released tax strategy and what steps should be taken to ensure the Isle of Man prospers again in the future.
Crogga wants to give the Isle of Man Government a multibillion pound Christmas present but needs government to agree a variation to their gas exploration licence. The Chief Minister apparently sacked Chris Thomas for not assisting Crogga so the decision is now in Tim Crookall's hands. Several Tynwald members and a growing international chorus suggest that extracting more fossil fuels during the climate emergency is no longer acceptable. So who's right? Should we go for the gas? Crogga appears to be drinking in the last chance saloon but with the Infrastructure Minister provide them with festive cheer?
The Isle of Man Government Risks Fanning the Flames of a World on Fire according to the Green Party's Andrew Langan Newton but is he right? The claim is made as government looks to vary the conditions of Crogga's gas exploration licence which has received intense scrutiny in recent Keys sittings. There does seem to be a growing chorus of international organisations and governments suggesting that further attempts to find fossil fuels will cause real danger to the future of humanity but is this just scaremongering? More screetchy green washing or a wake up call for our future - you decide?
Lewis Foster looks back at the highs and lows of 2023 Isle of Man Government Conference.

The saying goes, “there's lies, dang lies and statistics” but Agenda this week is speaking to three people who beg to differ. Treasury Minister Alex Allinson and Jonny Platten, Head of Economic Advisory, tell us about the new Isle of Man Government dashboard and why it's important. Also, Kelvin Corlett head of Statistics Isle of Man explains how statistics are gathered and why his organisation is staunchly independent of political interference.
Isle of Man Government has this week launched a new Manx language strategy which includes an ambitious target of having 5,000 Manx speakers by 2032. So does government investment on our indigenous language represent value for money or is Manx a thing of the past best left to history?

This is a re-upload of the Friday Morning edition of Dark to Light, for which I was the lone host. It's a short recording which covers a few topics I wasn't able to get through on Friday night's episode of Quite Frankly. Alec Baldwin apparently didn't shoot the gun that killed a crew member on the set of his latest film; Isle of Man Government comes out and says what many have been warning about since the beginning regarding the so-called vaccines; and the Maxwell Trial is going precisely as expected. Hope you enjoy! Share, subscribe, and become a sponsor!

At 16 years old, Jo Overty lived independently, working nights in a print factory to pay bedsit rent and support herself through sixth form. After a couple of years working at an estate agent and a bank in Leicester, she followed her vocation and trained to be a journalist in Sheffield and benefited from tuition from national and regional newspaper editors. Winning the Esso Northern Young Journalist of the Year was a massive encouragement for this young reporter. The sunny April of 1988 a journalist placement lured her to the Isle of Man, and a job offer at the end of it (coupled with her instant love for the island) and the community meant she stayed. Then in 2006, she joined the Isle of Man Government initially in education in a diverse role (communications, events and new project management); then Cabinet Office, at the very heart of Government, in the communications team. For the past three years Jo has been the project officer for the UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man. She oversaw the creation of the first ‘local' strategy, complementing the three global aims and ambitions of Biospheres benefiting the Island's economy, environment and community. In 2020 she gained an intensive qualification in Biosphere Management. Jo demonstrates amazing resilience, is a Test cricket and football fan, keen amateur photographer, music lover and Radio 4 addict! Here's this week's conversation with Jo Overty in episode 59 of Island Influencers.

In his last six years, before taking up his appointment with the Isle of Man Government, Nick served as the Chief Executive Officer of a regulated Trust Service Provider. During his time on the island, his roles have included Banking, International Treasury Management, Box Management and Fiduciary Services. Nick is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. The Isle of Man is home to one of the most successful sustainable shell fish fisheries in the British Isles. Developed over a period of 30 years, their Marine Nature Reserve now accounts for 52% of Manx coastal waters, and their Ramsey Bay scallops are the biggest in Britain. ffinlo Costain talks to Phil Gawne, former Fisheries Minister of the Isle of Man Government, and to Peter Duncan, IOMG's Senior Marine Environment Officer. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/farmgate/message

Described as "A gathering in prayer and reflection, as we mourn those who have died, weep with those who weep, and give thanks for those who labour faithfully for all our sakes" a special Service of Reflection, organised by the Isle of Man Government, was held in St George's Church in Douglas on Friday 28th August, to reflect and give thanks for all that has been achieved in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic, and to place into God's care, whatever may lie ahead for us. Led by the Archdeacon of Mann, the Venerable Andie Brown, who is both Vicar of St George's and Chaplain to the House of Keys, the service also includes contributions from Chief Minister Hon Howard Quayle, Mr Speaker, Hon Juan Watterson, Mayor of Douglas, Councillor Jonathan Joughin, Monsignor John Devine, Reverend Richard Hall, Pastor John Powell, Pastor Jonathan Stanfield, Reverend Dawn Mather, Bob Jeavons (Secretary of CAiM - Churches Alive in Mann) and Leonard Singer, representing the Island's Jewish community. Singing is led by the choir of St George's, joined by members of the Government Choir, and the organist is Mr Nicholas Roberts.
