Welcome to Episode 61 of the Blue Light Leavers Podcast Now, this one really is a bit special, and this is going to help a huge amount of people. Today, we're talking pensions and we're really fortunate to be speaking to Rob Heath. Rob is a former police officer who retired due to ill-health after 23 years' service, and he's now the lead financial advisor for 3nines Financial Planning, and they offer bespoke financial planning for Police and Emergency Services personnel, and Rob is a Police pensions expert. He delivers pension presentations across the UK and he's just an all-round, lovely bloke. Now the challenge we have here is that a lot of advice and guidance is based on your personal circumstances, and your personal goals and needs, so we've tried to answer all of the pension related questions that were asked within the Blue Light Leavers Group. We've also tried to deal with some common themes and do some myth-busting. In this episode we talk about that sweet spot of when you should or could go, we talk about the 87/06 and 2015 pension schemes and we also talk about the some of the really bad advice, such as retiring a day before your 55th birthday, and we talk about the risks associated with opting out of the 2015 scheme and we also talk about the pension trap. We also cover those with less than two years' service who decide that policing isn't for them, and the options they have in terms of getting access to their contributions. We talk about why having 25 years' service and being aged 50 is becoming much more relevant, and we also talk about becoming a financial advisor as a career path, and something that Rob talks about is the Aspiring Advisor Program. You can contact Rob through info@3nines.co.uk The value of an investment of St. James's Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time and are dependent on individual circumstances. 3Nines is a trading name of Eight Wealth Management Ltd, who are an Appointed Representative of and represent only St. James's Place Wealth Management plc, who are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Robert Gardner joins Purposely Podcast to share his fascinating story, from a childhood in inflation ravaged Argentina to disrupting the pension industry through his successful start-up ‘Redington'. Rob is currently Director of Investment at St. James's Place Wealth Management, a highly respected visionary, Rob is leading a responsible investment revolution in wealth management. Rob is responsible for planning, growing and protecting the wealth of over c850,000 clients in the UK and Asia. St. James's Place manages over c£150 billon of client funds, Rob's main goal is to ensure that these clients have enough money to live a long and prosperous life, at the same time using this money to be a force for good as delivering financial wellbeing in a‘world worth living in.' Rob started his career in investment banking at Deutsche Bank working in foreign exchange. Rob then moved to Merrill Lynch where he helped pioneer a way for pension funds to manage their long-term interest rates and inflation risks. In 2006 he resigned to become an entrepreneur and co-founded Redington, “we wanted to do for pensions what Jamie Oliver did for school food”. Redington today is one of the largest investment consultants in the UK, employing over 200 employees in London, Bristol and Beijing. While Rob no longer works at Redington but remains a shareholder in that business. During his time at Redington, Rob also co-founded a charity RedSTART focused on delivering financial education to children across the UK especially those who need it most. Rob talks about his personal commitment to RedSTART's mission and how they plan to play a key role ‘ in planting the seed for the financial security for young people across the UK. I normally ask my guests about organisational mission but it struck me that you have your own personal mission? ‘Yes that's right, over the last few years I have used a concept called Ikigai (Japanese philosophy) to decide my personal mission, it mapped what I love doing, what I think I'm good at, what will enable me to make an impact paired with what the world needs. Ideally something I can get paid for and suits my skills - the epicentre of that is financial well being in a world worth living in. So if you look at my career and the things I do, they basically fall under either helping to create financial wellbeing or helping towards ensuring a world worth living in.' You spent some of your childhood in Argentina? ‘ Yes, my parents were teachers and moved there to take up roles at the end of 1985 when I was seven years old. One of the interesting things about Argentina in that period is that inflation was running at over 30% a month. So imagine being paid and then at the end of the month your spending power is 30% less than it was the month prior. Incredibly prices would change every day and Mum and Dad would get paid a wad of cash and we would then go and do the monthly shop. In the evening, we drove to this house, I don't know if you've ever watched a show called Narcos, this was a scary house big metal bars on the windows and Dobermans in the garden and my dad and one of the other members of staff would go up to change their money into US dollars. Then that night we'd head home with our US dollars and hide them typically in the old 35 millimetre film canisters and hide them around the house. So remember, I'm seven years old, my sister's five, and this is normal and I why are we doing that?! Well, there are two reasons, one was inflation and the second thing is that people didn't trust putting their money in banks.' --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

Founded in 2006 by Tom Mercer from a stall at Waterloo East and now, over a decade on, MOMA Foods has recently won a great taste award for it's oat milk barista edition. This however didn't stopped Tom from growing a multimillion-pound business and kicking on. So, from humble beginnings on a market stall in East London, is Tom the Lord Sugar of the Oat world? Famed for being labeled ‘England's leading adman', Johnny Hornby founder of The&Partnership spoke to Oliver about how he founded and runs the now global agency. With some 1,400 staff, working on some of the globe's biggest campaigns it wasn't all jets, whisky and red carpets. Johnny, who struggled for the first 6 months to make any sales then forgot to pay the VAT and instead bought a ping pong table. He recounts how in business the best way to learn is to “fu** it up”. Things improved for Johnny and his team who later successfully delivered Tony Blair's ‘New Labour' campaign, won contracts from Tango, Tetley and the Telegraph, sold a 49% stake in the business for £60m to WPP and was recently appointed as Chairman of Prince Harry's charity Sentinel alongside his day job at The&Partnership. Robert (Rob) Gardner is Director of Investments at St. James's Place Wealth Management, a position he has held since early 2019. He was a co-founder of Redington, a consulting firm, where he spent 14 years and remains a non-executive Director. Rob describes himself as a financial activist – on a mission to make money a force for good for people and the planet and create “financial wellbeing in a world worth living in”. He is a passionate advocate for financial literacy and has written a children's book on the topic called "Save your Acorns" (see: https://saveyouracorns.com/). He is on the expert committee of the Retirement Investment Systems Reform Project of the World Economic Forum. Our multi-layered conversation looks back to Rob's youth, when he spent a period of time in Argentina and later in a boarding school in the UK. His early days of juggling exchange rates and experiencing the reality of hyper-inflation sowed the seeds for a passion for numbers and finance, and we trace his years in finance before he took the leap to found Redington. We then pivot to some of Rob's core beliefs that guide his current advocacy - his passionate focus on increasing financial literacy, particularly in young children, and his advice around what it means to invest for a world worth living in. We speak about his current work that encourage planning for living to 100 (and beyond) and how investing with a sustainable lens is critical. Rob leaves us with some of the advice he gives to the young people he mentors: that they should begin with the end in mind - and to nurture their three pools of capital: intellectual capital, social capital, and financial capital. This endorsement to keep learning, build networks and to manage risk and finances prudently is a powerful trinity that applies well beyond the walls of finance and investment. This podcast was supported by Alvine Capital, a specialist investment advisor and placement boutique, based in London, and the Guild of Investment Managers, which was found in 2015 by a group of investment managers, to combine the benefits of a modern, diverse and dynamic network organization with the traditions of the livery world.

Sign up to our newsletter for more in-depth insights | Follow us on LinkedIn As a FTSE 100 company, managing over £100 billion for 750,000 clients, St James Place (SJP) has been a great financial success story and today is the UK's largest wealth manager. Chris starts by describing his journey, studying economics at Hull University, learning key early life lessons working first at Cazenove then Fidelity, before taking up the position as Chief Investment Officer for St James Place. During that period, 2009-2020, the market value of the company grew rapidly and today has a stunning 97% client retention rate. Chris describes the approach SJP has to building portfolios, through identifying and working with a range of global external managers across asset classes and styles. Unlike many wealth management firms, they use external Funds, do not select individual stocks, and have developed deep, long term relationships with fund managers to whom they have access. He also discusses their approach to developing long-term relationships with clients and their families who are served by the SJP “partnership structure”. The conversation moves to the huge intergenerational wealth transfer taking place in the UK and the academy SJP run to train their advisors. Career opportunities in the wider wealth management business in the UK is also discussed, referring to an earlier MoneyMaze Podcast where Schroder's CEO, Peter Harrison refers to the shortage of trained advisors and the growing “advice gap”. Chris goes on to talk about their approach to investing in private equity and debt, the challenges of active versus passive, and their approach to the growing demand from investors for more clarity in ESG matters. A discussion follows about the SJP experience with the Woodford Funds, and then on defending the criticism sometimes made about SJP's opaque fee structure. Finally Chris talks about his love of rock climbing and admiration for the climbing legends, and of his new passion, kite-surfing, which offers him the potential to be bruised both by markets and his main hobby!
