As a small business owner myself, I see this story quite a bit. I hang out around other business owners, and they all think that they're running this very successful company that one day they can sell for tens of millions of dollars. Then they get the bad news that they haven't structured their books the correct way, and they're not achieving enough of a profit to get what they hoped they were going to get when they sold. And that's why they bring in guys like my next guest: Robert Gardner, a founding partner of Gardner Wallace Financial Solutions, and Jack Kearney, with Dumas Capital Partners.

Show Notes: Title: Media Entrepreneur and Filmmaker   Show notes: Natalia Tsarkova, a transfer student from Latvia, was the first student from the former Soviet bloc to apply to an American college. She was thrown into a completely different world and roles, but knew she wanted to create more contexts for others to transform their lives like she didher life. Growing up in Latvia, she watched pirated MTV videos and credits seeing Billy Jean for the first time for inspiring her to work in the media space. In 1993, she met a professor at the MIT Media Lab, who recognized her mixed background of mathematics, social studies, and filmmaking. She fell into the master's program at the MIT Media Lab, where she was educated on the new way of thinking about media and how to create more meaningful experiences through on-demand interactive media platforms.   Working in Video on Demand and Interactive Experiences Natalia was eager to move to New York City and found a job with a startup in Soho. She was driven to explore the world of startups and entrepreneurs, which she didn't know much about before. She created projects Barry Diller, Sony Music and was hired by the Beatles estate to create the first Beatles digital experience. She had the luxury of diving deep into the Beatles archives and creating unique digital content. Natalia worked with IMG, fashion, and sports, and was tasked with explaining the digital transformation to CEOs in management, helping them imagine new types of media experiences that were digital and on demand. Her journey from MIT to New York City was filled with excitement, partying, and meeting people from all walks of life. She was able to stay afloat as a consultant, working on projects that fascinated her and helped shape the future of digital media.  The Development of Transmedia  In 2001, Natalia met her husband, a French television music television producer, who was looking for a digital media expert. In 2003, they set up the first European video on demand platform, called Transmedia.  Natalia convinced television producers that linear television was dead and that video on demand was the future. They built a business by packaging content from France television and other European producers and selling it to telcos in Belgium, Switzerland, and even France. With their large library of live musical content, they launched a video on demand platform called iConcerts, similar to Netflix but with only live music. This platform evolved into a hybrid high-definition TV/Video on Demand channel, licensed by operators in 128 countries between 2007 and 2010. The platform was successful, with collaborations with CCTV, an office in Singapore, Paris and Tokyo and partnerships with Senegalese musicians and Africa. Natalia explains how she became disillusioned a few years before it was sold.     Making a TV Documentary  Ever since Harvard, Natalia always did some form of documentary filmmaking. During summers, she rented a house in France and started filming the Gypsy Kings, a group that were popular in the 90s. Natalia showed the excerpts to a head of a European arts channel called Arte, who suggested she submit a the proposal for a full length film. The film was released in 2016 and received triple primetime ratings on the channel, and the Gypsy Kings loved it. This experience of original content storytelling and the idea of tribes, such as the Gypsy tribe, inspired her. She moved on to create a project called Tribo, designed to be a storytelling platform for groups to share their stories. Tribo has become more about digital storytelling and dynamic storytelling.  The Evolution of the Tribo Platform  Natalia discusses the concept of Tribo as a media platform for storytelling. Tribo was initially designed as an extension of live music festivals, but after two years of testing, it has been found to be particularly effective in private communities during COVID-19. Tribo aims to create a platform where stories that matter over time are told, such as collective storytelling. This can involve recording portraits of different people who are part of the organization, allowing everyone to post photos and videos during an event, and giving CEOs a space to motivate everyone. Natalia emphasizes the importance of engagement from employees, as most companies struggle with sharing their stories due to busy work and reluctance to share. By providing equal opportunities for sharing and having leaders interviewing people, Tribo can capture the heritage and legacy of the community.  Influential Harvard Professors and Courses Natalia was particularly fond of the VES department, where she watched two movies a day, and had a close friendship with Robert Gardner, Director of the Film Study Center and Svetlana Boym, an expert on Soviet art and modern art. She mentions Liah Greenfield, her thesis advisor. She also worked for the Harvard Negotiation Project, created by Roger Fisher, a professor at HLS known as the ultimate expert on negotiation.. Her first job at Harvard was working at the Russian research center, where she was hired by Marshall Goldman, a big Soviet studies professor.   Timestamps: 05:12 How a Latvian student applied to Harvard despite obstacles 11:30 Moving to NYC, starting a business, and networking 14:00 Digital media, video on demand, and startup experience 21:03 Entrepreneurship, media, and filmmaking 24:15 Filmmaking, loss, and entrepreneurship 31:27 Using tech for collective storytelling in organizations 41:17 Grief, trauma, and resilience after loss 44:42 Filmmaking, Harvard experiences, and connections Links: LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/natalia-tsarkova  Website: Tribo.Live Kings of the World: https://vimeo.com/197952008/d444b20c11 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nataliatsar/

Robert Gardner is CEO and Co-Founder of Rebalance Earth. With over 20 years of experience in the financial industry, he has a unique expertise in sustainability, pensions, and wealth management and believes that money can be a force for good.Rebalance Earth, is a fund manager that redirects the flow of private capital to protect and restore Nature. Their mission is to drive the transition to a nature-based economy by enabling the flow of private capital to protect and restore nature. Rebalance Earth achieves this by creating opportunities for investors to achieve sustainable financial returns from projects to restore Nature.Robert is passionate about the idea of “natural capital”. He believes that investment in the environment shouldn't simply be about climate change but should take a broader approach. He sees a future in which biophilia is prominent and discussion of environment-conscious investment should include reduced biodiversity loss, rewilding, and all aspects of being in tune with nature.Robert sees nature as the most valuable asset class on the planet. It provides everything from clean air to carbon capture and biodiversity; not forgetting that a balanced ecosystem is essential to create pollination and soil fertility for our food. The investment community currently operates an extractive financial model that has been using all of nature's resources for free, not valuing them and, worse than that, destroying them. Rebalance Earth is taking steps to build and propagate a more sustainable, biophilic approach. In this podcast, Robert talks about how he studied Geography at university and how his passions are hydrography and glaciology. He notes with sadness that a glacier he worked on as part of the Alpine Glacier Project during his studies is now gone. He sees glaciers as the canary in the coalmine of climate change and nature loss but sees the good news as being that this can be turned around with money used as a force for good.Robert explains how his background, growing up in Holland and travelling all over the world with his parents led to his interest in geography and how is career in finance and 25 years of learning how money flows around the world has led him to establishing Rebalance Earth. He says that there is no point having a great pension if we have no coral reefs, rivers are filthy, there are no fish, and the air is polluted. There's nothing to enjoy! He sets out his idea that nature should be valued. He explains that assets have utility, scarcity and cashflow in order to be valued. He gives us the example of the humble bee and how it has been estimated that it would cost £1.8bn to pollinate crops if the bee were to disappear. Using this and other examples Robert observes that the concept of valuing nature is currently an intangible and how by making the intangible tangible, people will value nature and therefore will look after it. Because people look after things they value. The five key problems that Robert sees in the UK are: Flooding, Drought, Water Quality, Biodiversity and Carbon. He goes on to detail how each of these problems represent significant opportunities for companies to make a return. The essence is the idea that companies can charge customers for reducing the customers' risks across these areas. He is excited by his dream that pension funds allocate 2% of their capital to invest in nature (enough to bridge the nature deficit), companies start paying for services to reduce risks from the five problem areas and the UK becomes a place worth living in.It would be amazing if we all look at the successful ideas around the world, which Robert shares with us in the podcast, and see how they work, so we really see the value of investing in Nature. For instance, nature-based towns and cities, a countryside with nature back in it and a farming system that has nature at the heart of it. Once people see that it works they will do more. “I was drowning”. Acclaimed filmmaker Brett Morgen (“Kurt Cobain Montage of Heck”, “The Kid Stays in the Picture”) knew he was in deep trouble creatively when he sat down to write the script for his latest documentary and days stretched to weeks and then months. When your film subject's own creative output is as varied, unpredictable, and brilliant as rock star David Bowie's was throughout his legendary career, the pressure to measure up can be paralyzing. But, eventually, Brett cracked the narrative code, and the result is his remarkable new documentary, “Moonage Daydream”. Following the film's successful launch on IMAX screens, Brett joined Mike and Ken to talk about the emotional rollercoaster of his seven-year odyssey to bring this cinematic exploration of David Bowie's creative and spiritual journey to life. Faced with two visions of how to approach the topic, why did Brett choose the road less traveled — “a non-biographical experiential non-fiction film” — rather than the more linear musical jukebox that would have surely been the easier path? What is the “covenant” that Brett created with the audience? And after experiencing a massive heart attack at the beginning of the project, how did Brett draw inspiration from Bowie and gain insight into how to live his own life? Join us for this wide-awake conversation that is not intended to answer all of your questions about this extraordinary film, but will, hopefully, provoke more questions. That's just how it is with David Bowie… and Brett Morgen. Property And Share Prices At Record Levels Despite Poor Economic Outlook As 2021 Draws To A Close

UK house prices have reached an all-time average record of £254,822 in December, according to lender Nationwide. While most stock markets around the world have continued to rise to new highs despite the gloomy economic outlook and a growing new variant  The average price of a typical house in the UK is now £23,902 more than it was in January, making it the strongest year for price rises since 2006. Nationwide and the Halifax have predicted the market would slow next year because the stamp duty holiday, which ended in September, forced buyers to bring purchases forward. Nationwide also said the slowdown could be made worse by the spread of Omicron. Interest rate factor Nationwide's chief economist Robert Gardner said that even if the economy remains strong in spite the virus, higher interest rates were likely have a "cooling influence" on the housing market. "House price growth has outpaced income growth by a significant margin over the past 18 months and, as a result, housing affordability is already less favourable than before the pandemic struck," Mr Gardner added. The lender could be anticipating further increases to interest rates in the new year. Earlier this month, the Bank of England hiked base interest rates to 0.25% from their historic lows of 0.1% in a bid to curb the threat of rising inflation. The US is expected to raise rates three times next year to tackle the highest price rises in nearly 40 years. But the central banks cannot raise rates too high as this will mean higher payments on the trillions in debt they owe to lenders. Increases in the cost of borrowing will be bad news for people trying to get on the property ladder and could herald the end of the decade long property and stock market boom. Wales saw the highest growth with prices increasing 15.8% compared to the same time last year. Meanwhile, price increases in London slowed compared to last year, climbing just 4.2%. In an interview with BBC's Today programme, Andrew Harvey, a senior economist at Nationwide, said the pandemic had caused a change in the behaviour of buyers who had been looking to leave large cities in favour or suburban and rural areas. "I think London probably has suffered as a result of that," he said. Average prices change across the UK Wales: Up 15.8% to £196,759 Northern Ireland: Up 12.1% to £167,479 South West: Up 11.5% to £294,845 Outer South East: Up 11.3% to £329,869 North West: Up 11.2% to £196,806 Yorkshire and Humberside: Up 10.8% to £190,855 East Anglia: Up 10.4% to £268,146 East Midlands: Up 10.4% to £221,813 Scotland: Up 10.1% to £172,605 West Midlands: Up 9.4% to £227,031 Outer metropolitan area of London: Up 8.8% to £410,992 North: Up 7.7% to £148,105 London: Up 4.2% to £507,230 Source: BBC. Mr Gardner said it was the first time since 1973, when Nationwide began publishing house price data, that the largest price rises had been seen in Wales. "Price growth remained elevated in Northern Ireland at 12.1%, the strongest end to the year for the region since 2007," he said. "Annual house price growth in Scotland was 10.1%, in line with the wider UK." The year has been dominated by Covid lockdowns and restrictions which saw international flights to the UK slump by 71%, retail giants such as Debenhams go bust and thousands of small businesses and hospitality firms suffer losses. Robert (Rob) Gardner is Director of Investments at St. James's Place Wealth Management, a position he has held since early 2019. He was a co-founder of Redington, a consulting firm, where he spent 14 years and remains a non-executive Director. Rob describes himself as a financial activist – on a mission to make money a force for good for people and the planet and create “financial wellbeing in a world worth living in”. He is a passionate advocate for financial literacy and has written a children's book on the topic called "Save your Acorns" (see: https://saveyouracorns.com/). He is on the expert committee of the Retirement Investment Systems Reform Project of the World Economic Forum. Our multi-layered conversation looks back to Rob's youth, when he spent a period of time in Argentina and later in a boarding school in the UK. His early days of juggling exchange rates and experiencing the reality of hyper-inflation sowed the seeds for a passion for numbers and finance, and we trace his years in finance before he took the leap to found Redington. We then pivot to some of Rob's core beliefs that guide his current advocacy - his passionate focus on increasing financial literacy, particularly in young children, and his advice around what it means to invest for a world worth living in. We speak about his current work that encourage planning for living to 100 (and beyond) and how investing with a sustainable lens is critical. Rob leaves us with some of the advice he gives to the young people he mentors: that they should begin with the end in mind - and to nurture their three pools of capital: intellectual capital, social capital, and financial capital. This endorsement to keep learning, build networks and to manage risk and finances prudently is a powerful trinity that applies well beyond the walls of finance and investment. This podcast was supported by Alvine Capital, a specialist investment advisor and placement boutique, based in London, and the Guild of Investment Managers, which was found in 2015 by a group of investment managers, to combine the benefits of a modern, diverse and dynamic network organization with the traditions of the livery world.
