For the 33rd installment of the Fanzine Podcast, we welcome Chris Coleman, former editor of at least two important ‘zines from the 1980s post-punk UK Midlands: Stringent Measures and What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen. The first of these zines straddled a vibrant local indie scene that included the likes of Eyeless In Gaza, In Embrace, Attrition, and the Glass Records label (about which Chris put together a special edition) along with Chris's evident excitement for early U2. What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen, while maintaining the fanzine format, declared itself musically with a first issue featuring interviews with The Waterboys, The Alarm - and Johnny Thunders, to whom it later dedicated a special issue (as it did Marc Bolan). WANWTTS also put out physical vinyl – EP's and albums alike - that included the likes of The Jazz Butcher, Jasmine Minks, The Membranes, Mike Scott and Nikki Sudden, and which therefore continued to place the zine at the heart of the mid-80s indie music scene. To this day, Chris continues to release records of lost archived recordings on his Seventeen label.Chris spent a Friday night indoors chatting with podcast host Tony Fletcher about his fanzine experiences back in the day. Other fanzines mentioned in this episode include Bucketful Of Brains, Alternative Sounds and Adventures In Reality, and the conversation also diverges into the likes of R.E.M. and The Smiths. We get to hear how Chris's parents once collated and stapled and distributed zines for him while he was on holiday, and we find out which of the aforementioned musicians once commented to him, “You have great veins.” (Hint: it should be obvious.)Visit https://tonyfletcher.substack.com/p/what-a-nice-way-to-turn-seventeen for images of some vintage What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen, to find similar posts and pages dedicated to earlier Fanzine Podcasts, and for Tony's twice-weekly writings. Thanks to Noel Fletcher for the theme music, and Greg Morton at Omnibus Press for the logo template. The Best of Jamming!: Selections and Stories from the Fanzine That Grew Up 1977-86 is available from here. “The Rabbit And The Butcher” An actor of tremendous range and versatility, the Michigan-born and L.A.-raised James Duval has had quite a career. He tore through the '90s, appearing in movies like The Doom Generation, SLC Punk Independence Day, Nowhere and Go, and by 2000, his resume was packed. He appeared as the rabbit Frank in Donnie Darko in 2001 and since then, he's added over forty films to his CV, including Kaboom, Blue Dream, Chasing Ghosts and Comic Book Villains. The preservation society around Donnie Darko has kept Frank the Rabbit very much alive in the public consciousness. And speaking of preservation societies, it turns out that James and I have been a part of the same one for many years. We're both massive Jazz Butcher fans and the Butcher Facebook group, which counted the Butcher himself, Pat Fish, as one of its active participants until his death last year, is a very special thing. it's a tight group made up people who really care about each other and who understand the magic of the music and how its informed their lives. The Jazz Butcher is for sure a band that existed below the radar of the mainstream, but to us, they were the biggest band in the world. And still are. In many ways, the Jazz Butcher are like Frank the Rabbit—eternal and unique and unforgettable to those who know about them. So James and I were at the same JBC show in 1997 and we talk about that and so much more. Great chat, great, great guy. www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com

On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, the Buzzards rip it up with venerable character actor and musician James Duval who has had one helluva career. His career starts with what would become a lifelong cinematic relationship. His work with filmmaker Gregg Araki has spawned four feature films, one MTV pilot and one television series including TOTALLY F***ED UP, THE DOOM GENERATION, NOWHERE, KABOOM, "This Is How the World Ends" and "Now Apocalypse". Jimmy would go on to a career that spans over 30 years and over 175 credits. Some of his other most known films include early trangressive masterwork MOD FUCK EXPLOSION, INDEPENDENCE DAY (as Randy Quaid's son), Doug Liman's GO, the GONE IN 60 SECONDS remake (with Nic Cage and Angelina Jolie), SLC PUNK and it's sequel PUNK'S DEAD: SLC PUNK 2, the Sundance horror film MAY, he won an award for the film THE DOE BOY, SUSHI GIRL, TALES OF HALLOWEEN, and, most recently, I, CHALLENGER (see episode 302!). There is one movie that he can never quite shake. It was a small Sundance film that rolled out to deathly box office numbers but over time has steadily become one of the most well-known cult films of all time. That, of course, is DONNIE DARKO where he plays Frank the Rabbit. Then there is the music side of Jimmy. As a guitarist he led a band called Antoneus Maximus & The Nuthouze Band and played in another called Gene Wilder with fellow filmmakers Brian McGuire and Bret Roberts. He associated strongly with jangle pop band The Jazz Butcher and worked with David J from Bauhaus and Love & Rockets. So get out your yoga mat, light some incense, drink some herbal tea as we venture into the career, loves and passions, and overall positive and energetic state of mind of one James Duval on this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ. Illustration by Meredith Schomburg In episode two of Bent By Nature, co-producer Bob Carlson explores the life of influential and enigmatic DJ Deirdre O'Donoghue behind the mic. Born in New York City and DJing across the country before landing at KCRW to host "SNAP!", O'Donoghue didn't talk much about her past or private life — even in the face of personal demons, and eventually, her deteriorating health. But O'Donoghue's fierce passion for music manifested in close friendships with those who came through her studio and beyond, from artists like Michael Stipe and Julian Cope, to record store owners, to young station volunteers she nurtured and mentored. Even amidst a kind of self-appointed solitude, O'Donoghue devoted herself to those she chose to let in, coming to the aid of artists in dire straits and offering solace within her record-filled apartment alongside a cup of tea and her cherished pet birds. Her presence could, and did, change lives. Here, some of O'Donoghue's closest friends, including Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano, Tricia Halloran, and the late Pat Fish of Jazz Butcher, reflect on O'Donoghue's life away from the studio and the many stories they shared.
The Woodentops with Rolo McGinty in conversation with David Eastaugh The band formed in 1983 in South London with an initial line-up of Rolo McGinty (vocals, guitar, formerly of The Wild Swans and The Jazz Butcher), Simon Mawby (guitar), Alice Thompson(keyboards), Frank DeFreitas (bass guitar), and Benny Staples replacing Paul Hookham (drums). After a debut single, "Plenty" on Food Records in 1984, which received a glowing review from Morrissey in Melody Maker, they signed to the independent label Rough Trade Records, releasing a series of singles in 1985 and their debut album, Giant, in 1986. Generally well received by critics, the album's sound was characterised by acoustic guitars, but also featured accordion, marimba, strings, and trumpet sounds. The album reached No. 35 on the UK Albums Chart. A single from the album, "Good Thing", reached No. 7 on the UK Indie Chart. The band then became more experimental and frenetic when playing live, using more electronicsounds. This first became apparent as documented on the live album Live Hypno Beat (1987), which was recorded in Los Angeles in 1986. The band also started to become more 'raw' and unpredictable live, becoming one of the most exciting independent groups from the UK, while gaining an early hit on the burgeoning club scene in Ibiza with '"Why".
Before Soundcloud and Bandcamp, there was Deirdre O'Donoghue and "SNAP!," the LA DJ and radio show that served as a waypoint for underground music, artists, and its fans — and helped shape the sound of independent and D.I.Y. culture today. In the first episode of "Bent By Nature," co-producer Bob Carlson introduces O'Donoghue and goes inside the community she cultivated, her passion for music, and the problems she had with KCRW's management and staff. Featuring archival live performances by Camper Van Beethoven, the Meat Puppets, Glass Eye, Jazz Butcher, the Dream Syndicate, and more.

“The Last Of The Gentleman Adventurers” Over the course of a 40-year career that started in 1982, the London born and Northampton raised and Oxford educated Pat Fish fronted the Jazz Butcher Conspiracy. The JBC was shortened to the Jazz Butcher and Fish, along with co-conspirator and guitarist Max Eider, had a rotating cast of characters in his band, varying from guys like David J of Bauhaus or Rolo from the Woodentops, The Jazz Butcher put out close to 15 studio albums, several live albums, a handful of compilations, box sets, singles—you get the idea. If you're a collector—the Jazz Butcher is the band for you. They put our records on Big Time, Creation, Fire and Glass, and they played with R.E.M., Jonathan Richman and the list goes on and on. "She's on Drugs" was the closest they came to a mainstream hit and by the late 90s, things had slowed down a bit for the band. Pat owned a bookshop, played locally a great deal, hosted the Masters of Budvar live series, and kind of just chilled out after nearly two decades of frantic touring, late night drinking, hotel staying and rock and roll mayhem. He was adored and never far from those who did all that adoring. He loved his cat, he loved to read, he loved to drink, he loved to smoke and he loved to play music. Recorded in 2009 as the Jazz Butcher's The Last Of The Gentleman Adventurers album hit shelvers, this interview finds Fish in fine form, talking about the new record, Roddy Frame, The Blue Nile, his long-standing relationship with Eider and why it's so hard to age in rock and roll…. www.thejazzbutcher.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers The Podcast: Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast

The Blue Aeroplanes and The Jazz Butcher (a.k.a. Pat Fish) were not only mutual favorites of Deirdre's, but also long-standing friends and collaborators in their own right. While both in LA by chance, they dropped into SNAP during the show's off-hours to record this ramshackle but lovely acoustic set for later broadcast.
