Our guests today are the beloved British indie collective Black Country, New Road. The acclaimed art-rock band recently returned with their third studio album Forever Howlong—a bold and beautiful leap forward in both sound and spirit. Following the 2022 departure of frontman Isaac Wood—just before the release of their beloved second album Ants From Up There—the six remaining members embraced a new, collaborative direction. With no single frontperson, the group now shares the spotlight, crafting a more eclectic, playful, and emotionally resonant sound connecting with fans worldwide. In today's episode, we're joined by Luke Mark and Georgia Ellery to chat about the creative process behind Forever Howlong, working with producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Kylie Minogue), and how this record marks a new era for the band. We also dive into standout track “For The Cold Country” and explore how the band is navigating this exciting chapter together.Black Country, New Road: Instagram / Spotify Purchase Forever Howlong and find Black Country, New Road tour dates hereVisit our official website here and follow us across our socials.
Alle Links in den Shownotes. >> Black Country, New Road – Forever Howlong (Ninja Tune) Wir müssen reden. >> The Completers – The Completers (Yeah You!) Brasilianischer Post-Punk. >> Great Grandpa – Patience, Moonbeam (Run For Cover Records) Vom Schredder-Post-Rock zum schluffigen Country-Emo.

The music of Brixton-based Black Country, New Road makes us feel like we’re “Besties.” Their imaginative mix of sounds comes from classically trained as well as self-taught bandmates, and their new album Forever Howlong (due April 4) promises a heady palette that blends everything from folk, to prog, to baroque pop, to points beyond. It’s also their first release to feature lead vocals by Georgia Ellery.

Originally recorded August 22, 2024. This album by the Cambridge collective not only breaks the sophomore slump, but manages to be one of the greatest albums of the 2020s, let alone of all time. Filled with music & lyrics both poignant and personal, the band may never be the same after this but our feelings on it will be. It's BCNR's "Ants From Up There"!

Delighted and honoured to be joined by Jonathan Moore on the podcast today. Jonathan is one-half of hugely influential electronic act, Coldcut, which he formed back in 1986 with Matt Black. Coldcut are often refereed to as pioneers of pop sampling in the 1980s We discuss, among other things, the recording of Coldcut's first album. His memories of working with the late and very great, Mark. E. Smith from post-punk band The Fall and Jonathan tells a great story about the time Coldcut remixed a track by legendary French composer and pioneer of musique concrète, Pierre Henry. We also discuss Ninja Tune, the label that he and Matt started in 1990. The label's first release was the first five volumes of DJ Food's Jazz Brakes. Since then Ninja Tune has gone on to release albums by The Cinematic Orchestra, Bonobo, Kelis, Amon Tobin, Black Country New Road and the amazing BICEP https://coldcut.net/ https://ninjatune.net/home The Fall w/Coldcut - Telephone Thing Coldcut featuring Lisa Stansfield Synthetic Dreams is presented and produced by Scott Zverblis Synthetic Dreams on Instagram Synthetic Dreams title music by Chris Ibbott

The exceptional second album from the London group plays like a slow burn to a triumphant finale. Softer and more melodic, the band remains just as challenging and delightfully confounding as ever. 这句话实在是不好翻译,建议大家去从第一张专辑完整听到第二张,就会明显的感觉到那种slow burn到triumphant finale的过渡,自我审视,剥离;从那种"yo Issac you ok?"(I make this up, but if you know, you know.) 的距离感到"so if you see me looking strange with a fresh style, I'm still not feeling that great"(Basketball shoes-ants from up there)的那种感觉。 再到第三张现场recording的尝试(Live at bush hall),从疏离,忧郁,破碎,到“Look what we, did together, BCNR, Friends Forever”的振奋人心。 Enjoy. Songs Intro: Up song - live at Bush Hall 02:47 Up song cont. - live at Bush Hall 06:23 Intro - Ants From up there 09:48 The Place Where He Inserted The Blade - Ants From up there 17:22 The Place Where He Inserted The Blade, cont. - Ants From up there 25:47 Instrumental - For the First Time, live at Queen Elithbeth Hall 31:25 Sunglasses - For the First Time 47:25 Happier Than Ever - Billie Eilish Cover - Never Again 1:01:41 Track X - For the first time 01:11:21 Chaos Space Marine - Ants From up there 01:20:40 Concorde - Ants From up there 01:31:36 Bread Song - Ants From up there 01:43:28 Haldern - Ants From up there 01:53:26 I won‘t always love you - Live at Bush Hall 02:01:39 The Boy - Live at Bush Hall 02:12:12 Turbines/Pigs - Live at Bush Hall 02:23:31 Up song Reprise - Live at Bush Hall

As broadcast March 23, 2023 with plenty of candles to blow out. Tonight we start the show highlighting the birthday boy Damon Albarn, celebrating his 55th trip around the sun. Now a living icon, Albarn even if you're familiar with his big projects is a colossus in the studio and beyond, responsible for most likely far more than you know. After we blew out the candles on the cake, we got into our Sampled funk & soul first hour with tunes from DeRobert & The Half-Truths, Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Les Imprimes, and some refurbished live stuff from Elis Regina as well. Hour 2 we had a lot to get through as Dan Lloyd's local stalwarts of stage Malarkey are finally out with their debut album! We also had big stuff from Geese, Fall Out Boy, and Bouncing Souls along with more worship of Robert Smith, who is a true hero of the people.Tracklist:Part I (00:00)Tony Allen & Damon Albarn – Go BackDeRobert & The Half-Truths – Judgement (GED Soul Version)Dragonfruit – Honeymoon PhaseTinariwen feat Fats Kaplin – Tenere DenBella Brown & The Jealous Lovers – What Will Leave You BehindBrooklyn Funk Essentials feat Alison Limerick – Rollin (Love Will Be Here)Part II (33:45)Les Imprimes – If ILady Wray feat Ghostface Killah – Piece of MeBacao Rhythm & Steel Band – Hotline BlingFlavien Berger – JerichoOrions Belte – Lucid DreamingElis Regina – O Trem AzulElis Regina – Maria MariaPart III (64:49)Fall Out Boy – Heartbreak Feels So GoodBlack Country, New Road – Across the Pond FriendLemon Twigs – In My HeadGeese – 3D CountryKate Davis – Long Long LongPart IV (95:14)Bouncing Souls – Ten Stories HighMalarkey – Loose EndsTrophy Eyes – Blue Eyed BoyThe White Stripes – Icky ThumpDef Leppard – Pour Some Sugar on MeThe Cure – Friday I'm in Love

In this week's Indiecast, Ian and Steve share their thoughts on two new albums. The first is Yves Tumor's long-winded album Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds) (yes, that's the full album title), which is not quite experimental enough to be avant-garde but not quite catchy enough to be a pop record (44:40). The second is Black Country, New Road's Live At Bush Hall, an album recorded after the band's lead singer departed (53:11).But before they get into the meat of the episode, Steve and Ian dive into Ticketmaster's latest controversy and how it's kinda, sorta, but not really surprising how quickly The Cure's tour sold out (21:53). They briefly recap SXSW and a certain viral artist who people accused of “quiet quitting” during her set (1:30). Plus, in honor of Steve's list of the 100 best debut albums, they talk about which albums didn't make the cut (31:37).In this week's Recommendation Corner (1:03:36), Ian shouts out the memoir Stay True by Hua Hsu. Meanwhile, Steve gives props to Dazy's power pop EP Otherbody.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Listen to Episode 131 here and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. For the 2nd hour, our rock maestro Dan Lloyd takes us more through a criticism of the critics, marking some best ofs from the critterati that he both agreed and disagreed with, and highlights from Alvvays, Black Country New Road, and a few misses sprinkled in there for good measure.Tracklist Part I (00:00)CARRTOONS feat Nigel Hall – GroceriesJazzanova feat Sean Haefeli – Creative MusiciansBusty & The Bass – All The Things I Couldn't Say To YouParekh & Singh – Je Suis la Pomme RougeEl Michels Affair feat Piya Malik – UnathiThe Diasonics – Gurami Part II (32:49)The Cactus Blossoms feat Jenny Lewis – EverybodyKendra Morris – Got Me DownLady Wray – Joy & PainLucky Daye – EgoLizz Kalo – Transition Robert Glasper feat Q-Tip & Esperanza Spaulding – Why We Speak Part III (61:16)The Specials – Concrete JungleSoul Glo – Coming Correct Is CheaperAlvvays – Easy On Your Own?The Smile – The SmokeJack White – What's The Trick?Black Country, New Road – Chaos Space Marine Part IV (91:18)Nova Twins – Choose Your FighterIthaca – They Fear UsSpoon – On The RadioGhost – Watcher In The Sky Suede – 15 AgainArctic Monkeys – Hello You
For our 2nd edition of our Top of The Drop (best albums of 2022) rundown, we highlighted some bigger acts that we didn't blurb in the article but also gave a nod to some acts we think are very worthy of a listen if you haven't familiarized yet. Tunes from Bey, SZA, Bobby Oroza, Say Sue Me, and Danielle Ponder are definite highlights, along with unexpected surprise Adeem The Artist, who definitly moved us with his fantastic album White Trash Revelry (and we don't even dig country).Tracklist Part I (00:00)Beyonce - PLASTIC OFF THE SOFABeyonce - MOVE feat Grace JonesSAULT - LionSAULT - The Greatest SmileSZA - Ghost in the MachineSZA - Gone Girl feat Phoebe BridgersPart II (30:03)Bobby Oroza - Loving BodyBobby Oroza - Make Me BelieveDanielle Ponder - Some of Us Are BraveDanielle Ponder - Someone Like YouHUNJIYA - OUTGROWN HUNJIYA - FAVORITEHUNJIYA - MAIN CHARACTERPart III (61:03)Adeem The Artist - CarolinaAdeem The Artist - Baptized in Well SpiritsBlack Country, New Road - ConcordeBlack Country, New Road - Chaos Space MachineMakaya McCraven - In These TimesPart IV (91:05)Say Sue Me - Still HereSay Sue Me - Photo of You Alvvays - Easy On Your OwnAlvvays - Lottery NoisesFontaines DC - Jackie Down The LineFontaines DC - I Love You

This week we're discussing Ants From Up There by Black Country, New Road. If you haven't heard of these guys, they're spastic, unpredictable, and surprisingly emotional post-rock from the UK. This is a fascinating album on its own, but days before its release, singer/guitarist Isaac Wood left the band. While they are continuing without him, you have to hear this album to fully appreciate what that means.Ants From Up There by Black Country, New Road:https://open.spotify.com/album/4ZGAjDHKwwcMZSkDALzlSO?si=b09fb9aca9be4df3Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @motherpuncherHistory Tom's stuff:Debut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackInstagramTwitterFacebook
The last we heard from Jack White, he seemed to be midst of the artistic equivalent of a mid-life crisis with his 2018 album Boarding House Reach. But with his new LP Fear Of The Dawn, White has adopted a sense of indifference, resulting in a surprisingly captivating effort. On the latest Indiecast episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen review White's new album (29:49) and share their thoughts on Father John Misty's latest LP, Chloë And The Next 20th Century (39:14).In other indie news this week, the Grammys once again proved their waning relevance by awarding Jon Batiste Album Of The Year (:26). Plus, Steven and Ian share their thoughts on Wet Leg's much-hyped self-titled debut album (7:13), which they both liked and disliked more than expected. They also cast their votes for artists who made their favorite Q1 albums (20:25), including Big Thief, Nilüfer Yanya, Black Country New Road, and The Weeknd. This week's Recommendation Corner (49:02) has Ian giving props to Brooklyn band Tree River. Steven gives a shout out to Austin-based band Good Looks, whose debut LP Bummer Year is out now.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday.
