Jill released a memoir at the end of 2023, Counting the Cost, that called out everyone who was complacent in her repressed, abusive and highly controlled religious upbringing, and we are here for it. We talk Jim Bob, IBLP (Institute of Basic Life Principals) and the "Shiny, Happy People" documentary. This episode is from a listener question. Here is the question: In light of the recent Josh Duggar accusations and his upcoming trial for child pornography, I've wondered about some things. I realize that the Duggars aren't members of the church. It's my understanding though that they feel when matters occur involving a member of their “religious” group sinning against other members, that it is to be handled within the group. As you probably know, Josh admitted in the past to molesting 4 of his sisters and a babysitter. His dad had it handled within their group instead of going to police immediately. After some time, his dad, Jim Bob Duggar, finally went to a friend on the force, but no charges were brought. In the Lord's church, we aren't to bring our brethren to court. Is there ever an exception? I've heard of situations within congregations where men have exposed themselves or molested young girls and the victims were simply told they must forgive them. These matters were never brought before the church and to my understanding, the men never apologized. In situations where church members expose themselves, molest others, or even commit rape, are we supposed to only handle it within the church? And what if it's been handled within the church, but the offender continues to offend? Say that the offender continues to offend and is unrepentant and the congregation withdraws fellowship, can the victim take him/her to court then?
