In 1902, Dr. Takagi Tomoe arrived in newly-colonized Japanese Formosa as a seasoned Japanese medical expert sent here to battle bubonic plague – one of the many tropical sicknesses that killed thousands of local people each year. Takagi had a rare sense of empathy. Unlike many of his peers, he encouraged local students to attend his medical school (even letting them speak Taiwanese). This brilliant Japanese and German-trained doctor helped create Taiwan's medical system – and also, in an unexpected twist, Takagi was tasked with managing the company that's today known as Taipower. In this largely forgotten story, Taipei physician Dr. Jimmy Lee joins John Ross to tell the story of how Dr. Takagi became one of colonial Taiwan's most influential figures.

Frederick County Parks and Recreation is gearing up for an eventful summer, kicking off with its popular Youth Trout Derby on May 9th at Clearbrook Park. Marketing Manager Jeremy Sanders joined host Janet Michael on the Valley Today to discuss the array of upcoming activities. The Youth Trout Derby is a cherished event, inviting kids aged four to fifteen to enjoy a day of fishing. It's free but requires early registration at fcprd.net to ensure there are enough door prizes for all participants. Jeremy also highlighted the upcoming Sunset Series, featuring 12 weeks of free live music at Bowman Amphitheater starting June 5th. "We've got everyone from Jimmy Lee to the Fly Birds," he said, noting the picturesque lakeside setting. Independence Day will be marked with a spectacular fireworks display and a performance by the local band Train Wreck at Sherando Park. Food trucks from Chick-fil-A to Kona Ice will cater to all tastes, making it a family-friendly event. Dog lovers should mark their calendars for the charity dog walk and pool pawty at Sherando Park, offering trails for dogs of all endurance levels followed by pool activities. Frederick County Parks and Rec also has a robust lineup of races under the "Run at the Top" series. Kicking off with the Kids Blooming Mile on the Friday of Apple Blossom weekend, Jeremy notes that this event draws over a thousand young runners. The following day, the Valley Health 10K attracts even more participants, including elite runners. For a unique experience, don't miss the "Glow All Out 5K" on July 18th, an evening race with glow-in-the-dark elements. Although Janet isn't a runner herself, she found the idea of a fun, less competitive glow run intriguing. The summer guide, filled with information on classes, workshops, athletic events, and more is available online. Jeremy encouraged listeners to register at fcprd.net to get a copy delivered to their homes. For the most current updates, he recommended checking the Frederick County Parks and Rec Facebook page. With such a wide range of activities, Frederick County Parks and Rec ensures there's something for everyone this summer. Jeremy concludes, "We'll keep you busy!"

Research on the serious brain disorder paves the way to new treatments. Synopsis: Every first Wednesday of the month, The Straits Times helps you make sense of health matters that affect you. Schizophrenia is a serious and chronic brain disorder that affects a person’s ability to think clearly, manage emotions, make decisions and relate to others. Some people may associate the disorder with just hallucinations or delusions, but it is more than that. Those with the illness can experience cognitive and motivational problems that have no pharmaceutical solution, though other strategies, like therapy, may help. Schizophrenia affects one in 116 people in Singapore, and is the most common disorder seen at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH). With treatment, many people with schizophrenia can go on to lead fulfilling lives. In this episode, ST senior health correspondent Joyce Teo speaks to psychiatrist Jimmy Lee about the complexity of schizophrenia and the research that is being done to help individuals who have this illness. Associate Professor Jimmy Lee is a senior consultant at IMH’s Department of Psychosis. He has been conducting research to help advance the understanding of schizophrenia for more than 15 years. This podcast is part of the No Health Without Mental Health series. In this episode, host Janet Michael discusses one of Frederick County's favorite events, the Shenandoah Valley Apple Harvest Festival, with co-chair Darla McCreary. Darla, a Winchester Rotarian, shares that the festival will take place on September 21st and 22nd at the Frederick County Fairgrounds. The festival is celebrating its 50th year and will feature a variety of events, including arts and crafts, pet-friendly activities, and live music. Originally an arts and crafts festival, it has since expanded to include more fun elements like pet areas and adult beverages, including beer, cider, and mead. There will be continuous live music throughout both days, including performances by Mojo Mothership, Jimmy Lee, and Bottle Shock. A special 'Apple Harvest at Night' concert featuring Chris Darlington will require a separate admission. The festival will also host an apple pie baking and eating contest, a classic car show, and a kids' zone with face painting, inflatables, a petting zoo, and pony rides. The festival is organized by the all-volunteer Rotary Club of Winchester, which raises significant funds for local nonprofits. The Rotary Club has donated a playground to Jim Barnett Park and hosts a variety of fundraisers, including a rummage sale, golf tournament, and international wine-tasting affair. Food concessions will include everything from apple-themed treats like apple pie and apple dumplings to ethnic foods, BBQ, and Jamaican jerk chicken. General admission is $10 per day, with free entry for children under 10, law enforcement, veterans, and military personnel. Coupons for a dollar off can be picked up at Handy Mart stores. 'Apple Harvest at Night' requires a separate $10 ticket or $25 for VIP seating, which includes an adult beverage. The festival is supported by sponsors like First Bank, Bank of Clarke, and White House/National Fruit. For more details, including vendor sign-ups and ticket purchases, visit rotaryclubofwinchester.org. Pets are welcome, and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets to enjoy the festival's atmosphere.

With over 2,000 inpatient beds and a dedicated trauma unit, Barra hospital ranks as the 5th largest hospital in the world.  Coupled with its location in an area with unfortunately high rates of violent crime, and variable reliability and access to resources, working in the trauma unit poses unique challenges not often faced here in Irish EDs.  Dr Lee's experience and pearls of wisdom are not to be missed.  Right then, let's get to it. Get ready to pivot, and pivot fast!

I first became aware of Jimmy Lee because so many people asked for me to interview him. I liked him and his comedy but I was hesitant and din't want to do it. Not because of Jimmie but because I didn't want to leech off of H3. Listen, when they had me on their show it gave me an incredivle boost. I had new people from the H3 community subscribing to my channel but also supporting me financaillly. They were buying my merch, buying memberships, sharing my content, engaging etc. So, just having me on their show was more than enough. It gave a dead channel a couple of months to give it a final chance. So, I didn't want to start leeching off of them and asking them for things or start interviewing their frequent guests. But whenever I asked my subscribers who they'd like to see, the overwhelming winner was Jimmie. Plus, he had a story I could relate to. He's an older guy from South Jersey, who was't sdatisfied with his job and decided to branch out and try to make it in showbiz. Not an easy thing to do and he failed a lot along the way. But he finally found his niche and his following gas grow rapidly. He just hit 1m followers on Instagram. So, I watched every interview with Jimmie that I could find and they all interviewed the Jimmy Outlaw and did goofy skits with him. That was boring to me. He's done it a million times. What I was interested in, was who is the real guy behind The Jersey Outlaw. What motivates him? How he deal living in two different worlds? What mental issues has he suffered from? And why is he so obsessed with becoming famous? So, I wanted to interview James Weiner but also talk to Jimmie Lee a little bit too. I hope you like this angle and the conversation. I think it showed a side of him he hasn't shaed much. And we've got new merch! We're got some great new hoodies to keep you cozy and worm this winter. And I'm giving 10% off all orders.
