In business, we have a bias for busyness. Doing something is always better than doing nothing, to most of us. Indeed, Brainfluence guest and management expert Tom Peters famously proclaimed "a bias for action" to be a key component of excellence. But, is it possible that doing nothing could sometimes be the best strategy? In today's episode, we welcome Jinny Uppal, who has studied the science of action-taking and discovered that constantly being busy can be counter-productive. Jinny has compiled her research into a book called IN/ACTION: Rethinking the Path to Results, in which she argues that taking breaks and being mindful can lead to more sustainable growth than constantly striving for progress. As a business consultant, investor, author, and speaker, Jinny now helps others achieve their goals without burning out. In this conversation, Jinny shares her own experience of shedding the busyness bias and embracing a more strategic approach to success, and explains the science behind the action bias and how we can motivate ourselves to overcome it.
Jinny Uppal is the Principal at CK Advisory LLC and has held leadership positions at Bed Bath & Beyond, Kohl's, and Macy's. She has more than 20 years of working experience with Fortune 500 companies, helping drive growth and lead corporate transformation. She is an experienced technology and business leader with a track record of driving growth in telecom, e-commerce, and retail businesses. Jinny recently wrote her first book, In/Action: Rethinking the Path to Results, where she dissects counterproductivity and how to reconfigure your business. In this episode… The zeitgeist of modern entrepreneurship is constant work. Many people believe that the more you work, the more successful you are. However, this rhetoric has left many people in business feeling drained and coming up short. When this is added on to the immense weight that already falls on leaders, burnout is inevitable. Something needs to change. For Jinny Uppal, she discovered that utilizing strategic rest and mindfulness had resulted in the greatest growth of her career. She has spent many years leading brands such as Macy's and Kohl's but is now redirecting her goals to help others find what she has with her book, In/Action. Now, she offers some of those same insights to you. Dov Pollack sits down with Jinny Uppal, the Principal at CK Advisory LLC, on this episode of Next Wave Leadership to see how nonlinear paths can lead to nonlinear success. They discuss Jinny's own story of taking a step back and how others have used similar methods to great results. They also touch on the difference between goals and principles, why daydreaming can be so effective, and the powerful stories in Jinny's book.
We are back for another great interview in our Entelechy Series In today's episode, we chat with Jinny Uppal, an award-winning author, business leader, and team builder. She has over 20+ year track record of driving transformational growth in Fortune 500 telecom, e-commerce, and retail businesses including companies like Khol, Bed Bath & Beyond, Macy's, IBM, etc Jinny's recent book titled IN/Action: Rethinking the path to results, where she helps you leverage the power of a thoughtful pause to discover newer paths to great results while exploring the downside of the prevalent cultural bias toward unnecessary and counter-productive action. The book captures insights into the benefits of reflective thinking and thoughtful pauses while presenting a less stressful and more efficient way of achieving more by “doing” less. Jinny got inspired to write this book after she found herself without a conventional job in 2020, she had always worked in a highly structured environment where action-oriented people were valued, and not being in this kind of space really distressed her. At that low point of her life, Jinny self-analyzed and realized her career had a couple of pivots. Every time she was about to start a new career, she had come from a moment of downtime. This period of non-action made her realize that what really drives great progress is inaction. Jinny gives a few pointers on how to help inaction give you results: Strategic inaction implies a choice. If you're thinking long-term, its being here for the long game. It's not about doing this today for the sake of doing it. It's doing this because you want to live to see another day. If you're working in a very complex and dynamic environment, very often the thing to do is wait for better information to come along or wait for things to sort themselves out. So you are not interfering with the flow of what's happening. People who are very action-oriented, are almost overacting at this point. You don't need to because you're wasting your own mental bandwidth, physical time, and doing things that are not needed. In the book, she stresses it's all about taking thoughtful pauses, long enough for creative ideas to come through. Letting intuition make room for creation to come through you, as opposed to you chasing the idea. As a leader, you can't mandate your people to change but if you live this way yourself as a leader and people see the consequences, the change in your behavior they will do what you are doing. When it comes to team collaboration, the pause experienced enhances communication. The power of verbal silence in conversations, negotiations, in team meetings. There's a science to prove that something as simple as a thoughtful pause of a few seconds in a meeting just leads to better outcomes for a team meeting. In conclusion, the first steps you can start doing are building restorative habits and giving yourself intermittent breaks throughout the day. Very few people truly control their schedules. You can't take a day off or days off at once, but instead, develop a habit of taking 10-minute breaks once a day, or a couple of times a week and do nothing, allowing your mind to declutter. As the Great Resignation continues unabated—current estimates are that 4.4 million Americans left their jobs in September—there's growing concern that younger professionals' embrace of hustle culture is primarily responsible for the high levels of burnout they're experiencing. Wearing 80-hour work weeks like badges of honor and staying chained to their virtual desks even during their downtime has resulted in increased stress levels, mistakes, and plain old exhaustion. Contrarily, says Uppal, knowing when to lean in and when to let go is the key to unlocking creative inspiration helping you achieving your most ambitious goals. Uppal's book is not about slowing down as an end goal, rather it's about leveraging strategic pauses to make great leaps forward.Jinny Uppal is no stranger to driving contrary and innovative thinking. Put an author in front of schoolchildren and you can guarantee that before too long, one of them will ask: 'Where do you get your ideas?' It's a good question, and one that's just as important for business book writers. In this week's 'best bits' episode we look back over recent conversations to see, well, where DO authors get their ideas? (So if someone asks you that question from now on, you can tell them: The Extraordinary Business Book Club podcast.) With insights from: Cathy Rentzenbrink, Robert Kelsey, Jinny Uppal, John Howkins, Christian Busch, David Grayson, Helen Beedham and Catherine Stothart.
Jinny Uppal, a Growth Strategist for Fortune 500 companies, joins Navin to talk about why inaction isn't always a bad thing. She talks about the benefits of taking a step back and letting the mind wander to solve problems.
Jinny Uppal is a Harvard Business School alumni, speaker, business growth strategist, and author. Her new book, IN/ACTION: Rethinking the Path to Results just came out last last year and she's here to talk about business, entrepreneurship, and of course how the rise of hustle culture is responsible for our current levels of burnout, and why reflective thinking and strategic inaction is a better—and healthier—path to success. Jinny has spent her career in leadership roles at major companies like Kohl's, Macys, and IBM believes that determining when to lean in–and when to let go–is the key to keeping burnout at bay, unlocking creative inspiration, and allowing the workforce to achieve even their most ambitious goals.
"What's the point?" A great question from today's guest on Getting Work To Work, Jinny Uppal. Jinny is the author of In/Action: Rethinking the Path to Results, a growth executive, team builder, and thought(ful) leader. In this conversation, she shares how thoughtful pauses and strategic inaction help progress. Jinny also talks about the fine line between motivation and burnout, the importance of trusting the process, how goal setting fits into the mindset of inaction, why boredom is a good thing, and how learning to be okay with silence is a must to connect with the dynamism of life. Most importantly, she lets us know what horseback riding has to do with being more present in life and work.
In a world that screams 'Just Do It!', inaction has a bad reputation. But sometimes, strategic inaction is exactly what the situation demands - and much more productive in the long run than the rush to do something, anything. In this week's conversation I talk to Jinny Uppal about how she learned this for herself, and about writing, publishing, crowdfunding and curiosity.

When we start losing our hard-earned money in the market, we want to put a stop to it. We want to take action. But statistically, we know that investors who stay the course do better over time than those who try to time the markets. Jinny Uppal, author of “IN/ACTION: Rethinking the Path to Results," dishes on why we should stop listening to the voice in our head that tempts us to a default action path. "The belief that ‘I am the one who can control the outcome with my action,' makes us take more action than is necessary," she says. In Mailbag, we advise a divorced listener on setting up a trust for her son. And in Thrive, how to host a Galentine's Day party on a budget.
