In the latest episode of Science 4-Hire, I have a refreshing and relaxing conversation with Fred Oswald, an esteemed industrial-organizational psychologist and professor at Rice University. Fred is extremely active in the area of AI ethics and governance, especially with regards to hiring. Fred has served on many committees addressing these issues such as the National AI Advisory Committee and is a regular contributor at the SIOP (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology) conference. We called our conversation, “SIOP decompression” as the conference was 100% information overload. Fred and I sift through the mountain of information we consumed to focus on some of the topics we found to be most important to businesses and society at large. It is no surprise that the topics we choose to focus on all fall under AI and Hiring. We distill topics such as legislation and ethics for AI and hiring, the impact of Chat GPT and large language models on the world of work, and cool stuff like Fred's work with performance management programs for the US Space Force. We look at these issues from many points of view including those of the law, computer science, psychology, and business. Our message is that the future is starting to look pretty crazy, and it is going to take a blend of many perspectives and disciplines to ensure we are navigating it ethically while still building a free market economy. At the core of all this are humans. Fred emphasized the need for human involvement, stating,“Like any algorithm, you have to have humans there to manage every aspect of its use and interpretation.”Listen to the full episode now and join us as we explore the great stuff from SIOP 2023 as it related to the intersection of AI, psychology, and the future of work.

Unlocking Business Growth - exploring achievements, challenges and what's interesting
Bryan Clayton used many of the lessons learned in his first business to grow the second, but he did find that the nature of the business has a big impact on how you achieve success. It was difficult to switch from growing a lawn care business to building a technology business because a tech business is mostly inventing something new; never seen or used before. One of the secrets to growing your business is to focus on one level at a time, and look to gain knowledge or experience from multiple sources in order to build your own ability. Progressively try to move towards working more on your business than in it, but be patient because the early years are a challenge. Success in a technology business can be developed through rapidly releasing a first product, which probably embarrasses the creators but delights the small customer base you have, and using the valuable feedback received to develop a product that the market truly wants.Employing his superpower – consistency – made Bryan show up every day and persevere on the one or two things his business was working on to get to the next milestone. By doing it over and over, enthusiastically, until successful GreenPal has grown large, and yet Bryan feels they are only getting started. Bryan counsels to stay enthusiastic as you pursue each milestone, do not get side tracked through the highs and lows, and for those who feel they have missed their opportunity in technology – remember what Marc Andreessen thought about his opportunities in technology!Tune in to hear about: The value of the first-year customer base. How to close the gap between founder logic and user logic. The double-edged sword of external funding. Finding a business soul-mate if you need a business co-founder. And more. Mentioned in this episode:GreenPal app: Apple or Google Bryan Clayton on Instagram

Today you will hear us talk about: Warehousing innovation is becoming increasingly more important to the success of a scaling hardware product business Construction inventions and innovations are happening very quickly in new building design, fabrication, and maintenance. How do you get your construction product into the market to get into new or renovated buildings. Less labour, more product. This is prefabrication, and there is a lot of room for new construction inventions in this space. Product manufacturing and architecture are merging To pitch your construction innovation, show that it reduces risk, increases quality, is more reliable, is easy to install. A big advantage when designing your product, is to either make it easy to work with other products, or include what used to be multiple products into one There are lots of problems on a construction site, solve them with your construction inventions. Frances Valintine - Founder & CEO of the MindLab and the Tech Futures Lab - Impact of Emerging Technologies and Embracing Change. This is episode 478 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Frances Valintine Founder and CEO of The Mind Lab and Tech Futures Lab A well regarded and recognised technologist and educator, Frances has been focused on the future of work and the development of human capability for the duration of her career. She has a life mission to uncover the potential in anyone she meets - if you have a conversation with Frances you'll come away buzzing with inspiration, confidence and optimism for what lies ahead. Every day, no matter whether it's a keynote speech to corporate, government, education or social impact audiences; designing new future focused learning programmes; advising the boards and not-for-profit organizations she's involved with; or supporting staff around Aotearoa New Zealand, Frances is always thinking about how to create impact. Not for herself but to enable others to find it in themselves. Her door is always open and there's nothing more that she loves than to have a good natter about life, kids, culture and whatever else comes up. In recent years, Frances has built up The Mind Lab (started in 2013) and Tech Futures Lab (2016) to provide learning pathways for educators and professionals to not just participate in but have sustainable impact for the technologically driven future. Everything she does is about supporting people, businesses and organizations to understand the impact of emerging technologies and the cultural adaptation required to embrace change and build that impact. Frances sets the tone for the two organizations - one of lifelong learning, openness, awareness and inclusion. She has a passionate belief that a flexible mind that fosters an ability to learn, unlearn and relearn is crucial as new information, improved data and more advanced science and technology shapes our understanding of the world around us. Aside from her business acumen, she is also a naturally talented creative. The HQ for The Mind Lab and Tech Futures Lab is a great example of what is going on in Frances' mind in between the more serious conversations and tasks. Frances earned a Master of Education Management at the University of Melbourne and completed the Executive Program at Singularity University. Frances has been recognized as the New Zealand Companion of the Order of Merit for services in Education & Technology CNZM. She is a New Zealand Member of the High Tech Hall of Fame & 14th Recipient of the New Zealand Flying Kiwi Award, Recipient of the Peter Blake Leadership Award, Recipient of the CIO Award for Outstanding Contribution to Technology & Business, Winner of the Women of Influence Award for Innovation, and Winner of Woman of the Year for Education. You're not a developer, but you have an innovative idea for a software or maybe a mobile app, now what? How can a non-techie turn a great idea into a viable product without blowing your budget? That's exactly what Lori Vajda and Nola Boea wanted to know so they sat down with Igor Belagorudsky, Founder and CEO of Fast CTO. Igor and his team started the company to help people and companies with great software ideas get them built the right way, the first time around. In this episode Igor shares his experience, insights and tips so listeners can learn what you need to know about hiring developers, why you don't want an SOW (statement of work), and how to build a successful tech company. In This Episode You'll LearnWhy a poorly executed mobile app or software idea can quickly become a huge bank debt and how you can avoid it.The make-or-break steps for finding and hiring the right developer partner to successfully build your app.The risky mistake first time startup founders make when coming up with an idea for an app. The 3 reasons you need to treat your app like a business.Hire a reputable app developer. It's a statement that implies anyone can do so. As Nola and Lori found out, when you're a non-techie with a great idea, but limited to no experience talking the language of a developer, miscommunication is the fastest way to lose money on app development. As Igor Belagorudsky pointed out, while it's important to do your research, being knowledgeable about what to look for, what type of developer you need and speaking the language throughout the process to ensure your idea is executed, is quite another.(5:16.46) While the process of building an app seems pretty straightforward, this one costly mistake often leads non-tech founders to hire the wrong team of developers and programmers. (7:48.17) The three primary reasons non-tech entrepreneurs should be wary about signing an SOW and why it usually doesn't help with getting your idea built.(11:10.90) Why you don't want to hire, and should run the other way, a dev shop that offers project management for free. (13:06:42) When it comes to technology businesses, men and women have uniquely different approaches. Unfortunately, that difference can also lead more women to get taken advantage of by these scammy dev shops than male on.(14:20:20) Before hiring anyone, this is the first thing you should do, when considering if your app is worth developing.(17:12:28) The three main pros and cons of hiring a freelance software developer and hiring a company such as a dev shop.(19:27:22) The surprising answer to determine whether or not you can tell if a developer is trying to scam you.Resources Subscribe to Lori and Nola's show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Audible, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Fast CTOEmail address: igor@fastcto.comIgor Belagorudsky Social Links:Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/igorbelagorudsky/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lookattheigor/?hl=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fastcto To Get Igor's two recipes and quote: Sticky Brand Lab Resource Page
