Mike Lynch used to run the chip design giant Autonomy before it was sold to HP for $12bn. HP then sued Lynch for fraudulently overstating the value of Autonomy and won in the British civil courts. His life story is fascinating from an Irish point of view because both his parents were born here and now there's a superb book about him. It's called ‘The Curious Case of Mike Lynch: the Improbable Life & Death of a Tech Billionaire'. And its author is Katie Prescott, the Technology Business editor with the Times of London.

In this engaging session, Brian Doyle delves into the art of conducting effective Technology Business Reviews (TBRs) for MSPs. With insights drawn from his years of experience, Brian highlights the top five mistakes to avoid in TBR delivery, ensuring that these interactions build stronger client relationships and drive business value. Through this coaching session, Brian equips IT professionals with actionable strategies to improve their client communication and presentation techniques. Brian outlines the critical importance of assembling the right stakeholder mix in TBR meetings, emphasizing roles such as financial executives and line-of-business managers. He cautions against common pitfalls like inconsistent data presentation and overly technical jargon that can derail the effectiveness of these sessions. By articulating clear business-to-technology alignments, Brian underscores how MSPs can transform TBRs into strategic planning opportunities that resonate with clients' business drivers and objectives. The session is not just about troubleshooting; it's about paving a path for effective engagement with key decision-makers and enhancing the consultative value offered to clients. These insights are vital for any MSP looking to solidify their position as a trusted advisor in the eyes of their clients. Key Takeaways Stakeholder Engagement: Successfully conducting TBRs requires engaging the right mix of stakeholders, including C-level executives and line-of-business managers, to ensure comprehensive strategic alignment. Meeting Management: Establish clear agendas and maintain focus, preventing clients from derailing meetings with unrelated issues, thus preserving the session's strategic objectives. Consistency and Clarity: Deliver consistent, non-technical data across meetings to help clients track progress and understand the strategic value being delivered. Business-Technology Alignment: Clearly communicate how technology initiatives align with business goals, offering clients a straightforward view of potential ROI and strategic benefits. Leveraging Relationships: Cultivate relationships with decision-makers by positioning yourself as a partner in achieving their strategic priorities. CEO David Trainer sat down with Chuck Jaffe of Money Life to talk about our Danger Zone pick this week: Investors Shouldn't Pay This Price.
The Global Technology Industry Association (GTIA) stands at a pivotal moment, facing a profound transformation following the sale of its certification and training division. This transition presents a unique opportunity for GTIA to redefine its mission and solidify its role as a cornerstone of the IT industry. Rather than merely adjusting to changes in the technology landscape, GTIA must embrace a bold, redefined purpose that focuses on the business of delivering technology, including strategies, partnerships, and economic frameworks that facilitate how technology reaches customers. One of the key challenges for GTIA is its identity and the perception that it represents the technology industry as a whole. The organization must shift its focus from being an industry standards group to becoming an association that empowers go-to-market partners, service providers, and vendors. With only 2,000 member organizations, GTIA's reach is limited compared to the vast number of providers and companies operating globally. To thrive, GTIA must actively redefine membership and engage with the broader industry, positioning itself as the central hub of the IT ecosystem. To remain relevant, GTIA must also embrace digital transformation, moving away from outdated engagement models that rely on static reports and periodic conferences. By adopting a modern approach that includes real-time engagement, AI-driven insights, and digital-first collaboration, GTIA can become a dynamic intelligence network for technology delivery professionals. This transformation will allow GTIA to provide personalized, data-driven content and on-demand resources that align with the preferences of a younger, more digital-native workforce. Finally, GTIA has the opportunity to lead in philanthropy and workforce development by moving beyond traditional grant processes and focusing on impactful initiatives. By leveraging its substantial endowment, GTIA can empower organizations that drive meaningful change in the industry. Establishing a platform for new ideas and diverse voices will further enhance GTIA's role as a thought leader, fostering innovation and proactive discussions that elevate the entire IT ecosystem. The time for GTIA to act is now, as it must choose to become a driving force in the rapidly evolving technology landscape or risk fading into irrelevance. And after about a year they decided to take the plunge and then go out and build business themselves. Mirus Australia was established in 2010 and has been in operation for about 13 years already with over 55 FTEs. Jame has said that growing a small business involves focus and repeatability. So he mentioned, “Focus and repeatability are very important because you're a small business and you're very agile, there's a temptation to have a go at lots of different things.” This Cast Covers: Running an advisory and technology business in the aged care sector. Been working out for almost 13 years already. Maintaining full entitlements from the government for aged care funding. In the latest episode of Science 4-Hire, I have a refreshing and relaxing conversation with Fred Oswald, an esteemed industrial-organizational psychologist and professor at Rice University. Fred is extremely active in the area of AI ethics and governance, especially with regards to hiring. Fred has served on many committees addressing these issues such as the National AI Advisory Committee and is a regular contributor at the SIOP (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology) conference. We called our conversation, “SIOP decompression” as the conference was 100% information overload. Fred and I sift through the mountain of information we consumed to focus on some of the topics we found to be most important to businesses and society at large. It is no surprise that the topics we choose to focus on all fall under AI and Hiring. We distill topics such as legislation and ethics for AI and hiring, the impact of Chat GPT and large language models on the world of work, and cool stuff like Fred's work with performance management programs for the US Space Force. We look at these issues from many points of view including those of the law, computer science, psychology, and business. Our message is that the future is starting to look pretty crazy, and it is going to take a blend of many perspectives and disciplines to ensure we are navigating it ethically while still building a free market economy. At the core of all this are humans. Fred emphasized the need for human involvement, stating,“Like any algorithm, you have to have humans there to manage every aspect of its use and interpretation.”Listen to the full episode now and join us as we explore the great stuff from SIOP 2023 as it related to the intersection of AI, psychology, and the future of work.
