Welcome to another episode of ScaleUp Radio with me, Granger Forson. You can find me at www.bizsmart-gloucestershire.co.uk or on LinkedIn. This time, I had the true pleasure of talking to Bob Hayward, founder of two incredible ventures: Be More Effective and Key Performance Training. Bob's entrepreneurial journey is not only seasoned with decades of experience but fuelled by a deep commitment to improving the lives of others. His business Be More Effective is a consultancy designed to unlock human potential through the scientific blend of coaching, training and recruitment, all focused on helping businesses achieve sustainable high performance. His second venture, Key Performance Training, is equally impressive — a regulated training provider using practical skill-building as a pathway to meaningful employment. Think forklift certifications leading to second chances, real jobs, and better futures. What stands out about Bob is his unwavering belief that success in business is about more than strategy — it's about understanding people. With a background in psychiatry, he brings a unique and compelling lens to leadership and hiring. From avoiding the pitfalls of ‘like bias' in recruitment to treating people the way they want to be treated (not how youwant to be treated), Bob's insights could change how you lead your team forever. We also talk about the power of goals and structured onboarding, the mistakes many leaders make by not setting clear performance expectations early, and how just a few adjustments can change retention rates and team energy drastically. If you're in the scale-up phase and you're wrestling with hiring the right people, motivating them, or building a culture that thrives — this episode is essential listening. To ensure you don't miss any inspirational future episodes do subscribe to ScaleUp Radio wherever you like to listen to your podcasts. In this episode, former sales executive and poker player turned executive coach Kate Turner shares her journey through the "mid-career meltdown" and her work with professionals who feel burned out or dissatisfied in their careers. Kate provides actionable insights for navigating career changes, reconnecting with personal values, and making intentional choices. Her unique path, influenced by the strategic thinking and intuition she developed through poker, reveals how crucial it is to align your career with who you truly are. Key Insights and Takeaways: The Power of Self-Reflection: Kate stresses the importance of understanding your core values and allowing intuition to guide career decisions. Reflecting on what matters most can bring clarity to your goals and help you make meaningful changes. Strategic Thinking and Risk-Taking: Through poker, Kate honed her ability to strategize and take calculated risks—skills she applied to her career. She encourages listeners to take small, manageable steps toward change rather than waiting for a “perfect time.” The Impact of Corporate Culture: Kate reflects on her experience with the high-stakes, cutthroat nature of corporate environments. She shares her realization that dissatisfaction often stemmed from ignoring her needs and values, reinforcing the importance of staying true to yourself. Redefining Success: Many professionals fall into the trap of aligning with societal expectations. Kate discusses the value of creating a career that fits your true desires, even if it means breaking away from traditional paths. Addressing Self-Worth and Identity: Career changes often come with questions about identity and worth. Kate encourages addressing these deeper issues to build a fulfilling, authentic career. Practical Steps for Navigating Career Changes: Reflect on Your Values: Identify what truly matters to you. Write down your top five values and consider whether your current role supports or conflicts with them. Take Small, Strategic Steps: Don't feel pressured to overhaul your life overnight. Start with small actions that align with your goals and values. Seek Support: Whether it's a mentor, coach, or peer group, surrounding yourself with support can make a huge difference in staying grounded and focused during transitions. Visualize Your Ideal Career: Spend a few minutes each day imagining yourself in a role that feels aligned. Notice the details of what you're doing and how it feels, and allow this vision to guide your decisions. Check in with Your Intuition: Trust your inner voice as you make choices. Notice any signals or gut feelings, as they often point toward authentic desires and away from misaligned paths. Kate's story is a powerful reminder that aligning our careers with our true selves can lead to deep satisfaction and success, even if it means redefining the conventional career journey. Ideas That Make An Impact: Expert and Author Interviews to transform your life and business
3 big ideas discussed in this episode: When you've reached a point in your career where you say enough is enough and need a change -- how do you do it? How do you know where to make change in order to create more time, more space, more satisfaction? Knowing when you've done enough and feel like you're enough. Root your focus in what you have control over: What am I committing to? saying yes and saying no. Keep track of this - lists of what's on plate and who it is for, and what can be delegated. Did I do what I said I'm going to do? This is the measure of success and enoughness. Are you stopping to acknowledge and celebrate the little wins instead of stacking up the pitfalls, downfalls and losses. This is key to creating satisfaction. Celebrate what you did do and also appreciate the things you decided not to do. Consciousness/intention helps eliminate shame and guilt. A little bit of forethought and planning makes big shifts in outcomes and how we feel about it. Get more resources for this episode here: AskJeremyJones.com/300

Women will soon be allowed to swim topless in Berlin's public pools, after a ruling by the city's authorities. It comes after a woman who was thrown out of an open-air pool for sunbathing topless took legal action. A second woman said she was told to cover up while at an indoor pool in December. Authorities agreed they had been victims of discrimination and said that all visitors to Berlin's pools were now entitled to go topless. Kate Turner is a naturist and a member of the Irish Naturist Association and she joined Sean to discuss...
Special treat for you this week. Replay of a panel we hosted last week with Kate Turner, Abby Jiu and Julian Leaver. All three are clients of Ideaction Consulting, and also The Media Socialites, the company we're doing the Social and Sway Mastermind with this year. We brought them together for a conversation because we wanted our audience to hear their perspective on what helped them get where they are today, which is near or at the top of their respective markets. As you'll hear, there are lots of ways to get where you want to go - but the fastest and most enjoyable approaches share a lot in common. Here are some of the big highlights from the discussion that you'll get: Top 10 Takeaways Success isn't granted. You have to go out and get it, especially when it's slow. When you think you're doing really well, there's so much more out there - but you have to do things differently to take it to the next level and stop leaving money on the table. Ideal clients want to see themselves in your work, so know what to post and how to present it on social media and your website. Sales is something that has to be learned. Find an expert and do what they say. Everyone “plateaus” or “hits a ceiling.” The pros who push through do it by getting help from experts who know the way. Guessing what to post on social media and how to sell to couples is the slowest way to success. You improve what you focus on. Pick carefully and be strategic. You can't do it all. Find others to round out your team in key areas. Get good at the hard things, because everyone else is struggling and if you can be just a bit better than you'll win the business more often. People at the top don't get there by themselves. They have help from coaches and advisors, and their biggest regret is not hiring them sooner. We had nearly 100 people on live with us, and we kept them all on for the duration of the conversation. If you don't make it to the end, do yourself a favor and check out more information on Social and Sway, the new mastermind we've created for wedding pros who want to attract and book more ideal clients. Click the link in show notes and go to www.socialandsway.com The curriculum for the program is 25% social media, 25% other marketing, and 50% sales. This mastermind tells you exactly what to do in areas you're either a) getting stuck, or b) leaving money on the table. It's not an expense, it's a money-maker for your business. Last day to sign up for this one is Tuesday, February 7 at midnight.

One of the most magical moments of my childhood was when I first dug up potatoes in a garden and we later had some for dinner. I was awe struck! The domestication and cultivation of the potato (Solanum tuberosum) that I was digging up in that garden or the potatoes we purchase at the grocery store goes back thousands of years in the Andes of Peru and Bolivia. And isn't it wonderful crazy that here in North America the cultivation of the native Four Corners potato (Solanum jamesii) here in the southwest goes back 11,000 years. Well, the range of Solanum jamesii is far beyond the four corners area and you can bet indigenous folks all over North America have been eating species of wild native potatoes for thousands of years. Pretty cool. The photos of Solanum stoloniferum (S. fendleri) are mine and taken in the Chiricahua Mountains. The rainbow photo was taken by my old friend Kate Turner and taken from her little homestead the very day I was jabbering about in this episode. Thanks Kate!
