Today we delve into the importance of public and free third spaces and how they impact your mental health. We had the pleasure of talking with filmmaker, Ali Weinstein about her first observational documentary, Your Tomorrow, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024. The film is about the last year in the life of Ontario Place which became a defacto public park 10 years ago after living many lives as an educational and entertainment destination. Ontario Place was a third space that acted as a refuge to a lot of Torontonians until the government decided to turn the main part of the space into a private spa and despite public process, construction began in October of 2024, a month after Ali's documentary premiered. For those of you who haven't heard of third places before, it's a sociological term that refers to the social surroundings that are separate from the two usual social environments of home ("first place") and the workplace ("second place"). Third places, then, are "anchors" of community life and facilitate and foster broader, more creative interaction. They are spaces like churches, cafes, libraries, gyms, bookstores, gaming spaces, parks, and theatres, where people can gather, relax, and engage in meaningful interactions, which can positively impact mental health by fostering a sense of community and belonging Third places are where we can both affirm our own identities and build empathy for identities different from our own. In Ray Oldenburg and Karen Christensen's 1989 book The Great Good Place, Oldenburg argues that third places are important for democracy, civic engagement, and a sense of place. IN the 2023 edition, Christensen argues that third places are also the answer to loneliness, political polarization, and climate resilience. Ali Weinstein is the writer/producer/director behind "Your Tomorrow," a look at Ontario Place the summer before it was shut down after 52 years. For over five decades a 155-acre Toronto waterfront sanctuary, it is being radically redeveloped. Gone are 850 West Island trees. Instead we get a spa with a killer view of Cinesphere. In a moving, observational documentary,Weinstein captures the place in its final days as a full-on family retreat. Even after falling into disrepair, it was still treasured as a bird sanctuary and even a beach. The documentary is rather personal for me. As a student, I worked there as a bus boy for three summers, 1972, '73 and '74. Out the front door of the West Island's Blockhouse restaurant, between shifts clearing tables for two dollars an hour, I watched the CN Tower rise above the Toronto skyline. It never seemed possible back in those halcyon days of summer that Ontario Place would wind up, fifty years later, looking like an abandoned mall. Weinstein's documentary, shot mainly during the park's last active summer of 2023, throws a bright light on that reality. Was Ontario Place purposefully left to rot? Hear Weinstein on that and the making of this doc, which premieres on TVO March 23 and streams on TVODoc starting March 21.
We talk about Israel's wars, anti-Trans legislation, Trump's climate agenda, new Liberal leader Mark Carney, and our beautiful future. Dave Gray-Donald interviews Norm Di Pasquale of Ontario Place For All about the Therme Spa and their 100-year lease.

Guest: Toronto Star City Hall Bureau Chief Ben Spurr The city, we often hear, is a “creature of the province,” and as such almost all city hall business hangs on the indulgence of the premier. So for Toronto, the stakes in the provincial election would seem to be high. It's not hard to think of specific examples of issues that could turn based on the results, from bike lanes to Ontario Place to safe injection sites, to the ongoing negotiations about the “new deal” financial plan. Even more broadly, the current premier has taken an activist, micro-managing approach to Toronto, and central policies like housing and transit depend on provincial funding. City Hall Bureau Chief Ben Spurr and host Edward Keenan discuss a range of things that could change for Toronto based on this election, and about why you don't hear much in the way of specific talk about the Toronto angle from the leaders in debates. PLUS: Why Mayor Olivia Chow has been quiet about the campaign, and is unlikely to endorse anyone. This episode was produced by Julia De Laurentiis Johnston, Paolo Marques and Ed Keenan.
The Canadian political landscape is undergoing significant changes. The looming threat of Trump tariffs poses a risk to our economy, while Mark Carney is emerging as a strong contender for Prime Minister. At the same time, Pierre Poilievre is facing increased scrutiny due to his lack of high-level security clearance, which raises concerns about trust and accountability. Many Ontarians are angry. The billions wasted under Ford's leadership, combined with failures in healthcare and housing and scandals involving the Greenbelt and Ontario Place, have left many feeling betrayed. This discontent may significantly influence the results of the snap election in February.Poilievre and Ford are experiencing declining poll numbers, indicating a substantial loss of faith in the populist conservative movement. In the latest episode of the Scandal Panel, Keith Leslie, Mark Cripps, and Laura Babcock discuss these shifting dynamics in our political landscape. This week on Open Sources Guelph, we're reminded that the history of this show is haunted by an orange-coloured goon in a Florida beach club. Yes, we're heading back to Mar-a-Lago this week, and we're also heading back to Queen's Park to talk about accountability, our favourite topic! For the interview, we're talking to a friend of the show about how we can help people not go hungry this Christmas and beyond. This Thursday, December 5, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Mar-a-Largesse. Last week, President-elect Donald Trump announced his intention to apply 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico as a means of stopping the flow of unauthorized border crossings and the trafficking of fentanyl, an early sign that we're going back to the unfettered chaos of 2017-2021. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a surprise visit to Mar-a-Logo to try and nip this in the bud, but apparently Trump joked about making Canada the 51st state. Do we really have to deal with this again? Shelley Shocked. Ontario Auditor General Shelley Spence delivered her first report as AG and boy was it a banger. Essentially, her report said that the Ontario government did bad on Ontario Place redevelopment, MZOs, the addictions crisis, and unprecedented government spending. As the Ontario Legislature starts to shut down for the holiday break, and as the possibility of election still hangs in the air, we will dig into all this controversy at Queen's Park, which seems to be it's most reliable renewable resource. The Hunger. There was another report released this week, Feed Ontario's Hunger Report. In its some 57 pages you will see a story about the incredible food insecurity crisis in Ontario as more and more people are using food banks to feed themselves. To help us talk about the highlights of the report and how we can address the increasing need being faced by food banks, we're joined by Feed Ontario's Carolyn Stewart who will tell us how we can give the gift of eating well for everyone this holiday season. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.
