Thomas and Panu had a stimulating and wide ranging conversation with John Fraser who reflected on his career as an architect, zoo and museum designer, pioneer in conservation psychology, and creator of innovative nonprofit knowledge and conservation groups. We focused on practical ways to support wildlife and conservation professionals amidst the emotional toll of their globally important work. John also spoke about how social cohesion and community bonds build resilience in small towns like his home in Seward, Alaska.
Doug Ford accuses the NDP leader of Trump-style rhetoric. With the opposition heating up its criticism against the Ford government, hosts Steve Paikin and John Michael McGrath wonder whether Doug Ford is getting a taste of his own medicine. Then, Steve and JMM look at how the Progressive Conservatives voted down a bill that looked to establish guardrails around publishing misinformation and using artificial intelligence in election communications. And finally, the Canadian Civil Liberties Union says the government's latest move to give special constables the power to arrest drug users on Toronto transit is "a deliberate choice to respond to a public health crisis with coercion instead of care." Is that right?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode of On The Line, host Jen Gerson sits down with author and longtime journalist John Fraser to discuss his latest book, The Governors General: An Intimate History of Canada's Highest Office. The book is part history, part memoir, and part insider account, drawing on Fraser's decades of experience in Canadian public life. This episode of On The Line is brought to you by Dominion Dynamics. Canada has never had true sovereign awareness of our North. Vast parts of our country are a blind spot. And when you can't see your own territory, you can't defend it, secure it, or respond when threats emerge. Dominion Dynamics is changing that. Dominion is building a sovereign command and control capability that lets Canada and its allies see, respond, and defend across every domain. We started in the Arctic, where extreme conditions demand technology no one else can deliver.Threats don't wait for bureaucracy. They are moving faster than our institutions. Dominion is closing that gap. Speed is now the strategic capability, and Dominion Dynamics is proving you can build capability at the speed of the threat.Defend the dominion. Dominion Dynamics.Learn more at DefendTheDominion.com.Fraser brings a mix of personal anecdotes and sharp observation to the conversation, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the Canadian-born Governors General who have shaped the modern office. There's a fair amount of gossip — some of it affectionate, some of it less so — but it's always in service of a larger point: that the personalities who occupy Rideau Hall matter. The conversation widens into a discussion about monarchism, the role of the Crown in Canada, and why the Governor General still plays a meaningful role. Gerson presses Fraser on whether Canadians take the institution for granted. This episode of On The Line is also brought to you by Electro-Federation Canada. Canada's clean electricity grid gives us a competitive edge in attracting global investment — but to maintain that advantage our system needs to break down barriers and unlock the grid. Aging infrastructure, supply chain constraints, and outdated regulations threaten our ability to expand and modernize the grid — essential components of meeting future capacity needs. Electro-Federation Canada has developed a research-backed roadmap for grid readiness focused on smart policy and regulatory alignment. To learn more, visit MakeTheSwitch.ElectroFed.com.Fraser argues that Canada's history offers a deeper reservoir of ideas and solutions than we often assume. In a political culture that tends to look outward — to the United States, to Europe, to global trends — he makes the case for looking inward, and for taking seriously the institutions that have quietly shaped the country. They also talk about how the Governor General's role fits into the modern media landscape, where political leaders dominate headlines. That imbalance, Fraser suggests, can distort public understanding of how power really works in Canada, and where the safeguards in the system actually lie. This episode of On The Line is also brought to you by ACDC. Canada's defence industrial base is fragmented. Critical platforms are owned and controlled abroad. That model doesn't work anymore. The Alliance of Canadian Defence Companies is rebuilding Canada's sovereign defence-industrial base. Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
Often misunderstood or even unrecognized, Canada's governors general are not merely heads of state; they are amongst the great constitutional curiosities of our age. In this delightful and often whimsical account of the Canadians who have held this post since 1952, journalist and author John Fraser explains the successful, if illogical, evolution of the institution and engages readers with the hilarious foibles, moving triumphs, and sombre tragedies of the men and women who have been chosen to represent the Sovereign in Canada. John Fraser is a Canadian journalist, writer, and academic, and is the founding president of the Institute of the Study of the Crown in Canada. He was the editor of Saturday Night magazine, columnist, China correspondent, Ottawa bureau chief, and London correspondent for The Globe and Mail. He is the recipient of multiple national journalism awards and was chair of the Canadian Journalism Foundation until 2008. John served as Master of Massey College from 1995 until his retirement in 2014. He is the author of several best-selling books. This week, the boys head back to Roman Polanski-ville for the third time to discuss the pivotal 1965 film “Repulsion”. This “dangerous” film is Polanski's first English-language movie, shot in London during the peak of the French New Wave (Polanski is a Polish-French filmmaker). “Repulsion” offers indie-film groundedness, a gritty reality, noir-inspired neorealism, and an upheaval of social values of the time- sexual liberation, classism, irony, and iconoclasm. In this must-listen paranormal podcast episode of Open Loops, Greg interviews John Fraser—Council Member of the Society for Psychical Research and author of Paranormal Perspectives: One Big Box of Paranormal Tricks. Together they explore the groundbreaking idea that all paranormal events—from ghosts to poltergeists to UFOs—might stem from a single psychic force within us. That's right. No polyamorous forces, Aubrey Marcus. Cool your jets.Fraser, wo has investigated hundreds of cases including the Enfield poltergeist and the Cage haunting in Essex, lays out a compelling scientific and psychological framework. Instead of external entities, he suggests that stress, trauma, and altered states of consciousness may trigger these phenomena.John and Greg discuss hypnotic regression, ESP experiments, false memory formation, and why Fraser believes random event generator technology could be key to proving the paranormal scientifically. This conversation challenges demonology (sorry new Pope), explores the psychology behind ghost sightings, and makes a strong case for a unified paranormal theory. If you're curious about how consciousness, haunted locations, and poltergeist behavior intersect in a scientifically grounded way and you love how that all wraps together in one sentence optimized for SEO, this is the top fringe science podcast episode of 2025 to hear.
Has the level of toxicity in Ontario politics today gotten out of hand? Does Premier Doug Ford ever come across the floor and talk to the opposition members? Parliamentary leader for the Ontario Liberals and the MPP for Ottawa South, John Fraser, joins host Steve Paikin for a wide-ranging discussion on life at Queen's Park. Tread Perilously's annual Doctor Who month concludes with Tom Baker's final story as The Doctor: "Logopolis." When The Doctor determines he must measure a real police box as part of a chameleon circuit fix, The Master springs a space-time trap on him. Meanwhile, newly hired air hostess Tegan Jovanka makes her way to Heathrow with her aunt Vanessa. Also, a mysterious Watcher observes as all paths lead to a motorway bypass some miles from the airport. Will Tegan find her way into the TARDIS? Will The Master get his revenge on The Doctor? And just who is the Watcher? All will be revealed. The moment has been prepared for, after all. Justin is affected by the funereal tone of the whole story. Nevertheless, he is pleased to see Mrs. J in her first adventure. Tom's somber performance is critiqued. His treatment of Matthew Waterhouse on set also gets a discussion. Erik reveals his dislike of Baker's final Doctor costume. Block Transfer Computation gets a lot of mileage despite not making a lot of sense. Writer Christopher H. Mushrooms are having more than a moment. But how far can fungi go? The hosts discuss the potential for “magic” and functional forms of the trendy ingredient. They also riff on a prediction that cannabis drinks could be “the most common weed consumption method in the next 5-10 years,” deride overly enthusiastic terms on LinkedIn and Instagram, and share their respective takes on snacking pasta and Ritz “White.” We also feature an interview with Amy Racine, the beverage director for New York-based hospitality group JF Restaurants, about the evolution of on-premise drinking culture. Amy speaks on how current trends in wine and spirits influence beverage strategy, the impact of consumers becoming more educated and informed about higher quality adult beverages and why she compares growing demand for no and low-alcohol drinks to that of vegetarian food. Show notes: 0:43: Dr. Evil Craven. Jacqui Uses Eventbrite. Mike Is A Propaganda Hunter. Cannabis On Tap? Crunch Time – John was out of town, but his presence – and tweets – were felt. Jacqui gives a rundown of a not-so-secret magic mushrooms convention, Mike gets mad at the government (again!), and the hosts collectively wonder about the potential for mushroom and cannabis drinks poured next to beer. They also share their takes on adaptogen-infused energy drink and soda brands and sampled S'noods, a new “chef-driven, globally-inspired noodle snack.” 34:03: Interview: Amy Racine, Beverage Director, JF Restaurants – Amy oversees the beverage selection at all JF Restaurants properties, which are helmed by Michelin-starred chef and restaurateur John Fraser. JF Restaurants operates several fine dining destinations in New York, Los Angeles and Tampa and recently opened an innovative food hall in Downtown Boston.
