Joe Benavidez of UFC fame joins us today with Scott Groves at On The Edge Podcast! Scott and Joe go in depth into the career of Benavidez, from the very beginning in a New Mexico bar to his current role in society as a Real Estate Agent catering to retired public figures. We discuss movies, families, marriage, tons of martial arts, and everything in between. This is such a great chat with an absolute legend! This is a condensed version of the full 2 1/2 hour podcast. You can also catch that here! Here is a gratuitous copy/paste from Wikipedia about him: Benavidez was born on July 31, 1984, in San Antonio, Texas, and is of Mexican descent. Benavidez grew up with his single mother and two brothers.[7] He attended Las Cruces High School, where he began training boxing. At the age of 16, he also began wrestling, discipline in which he became a New Mexico State champion. He continued to wrestle for one semester at William Penn University before dropping out. From college onwards Benavidez struggled with alcohol and drug abuse before becoming sober, subsequently turning his interest into mixed martial arts.[7] After fighting in smaller shows while working as a screen printer in Las Cruces, New Mexico, he joined up with Urijah Faber's Team Alpha Male in 2007. Benavidez has since fought in Dream, WEC and most recently the UFC. His fighting style has drawn comparisons to training partner and former WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber. On April 27, 2010, the Mayor and City Council of the City of Las Cruces proclaimed April 27 as Joseph Benavidez Day in Las Cruces.[8] 0:00 - Start 2:30 - Fighting in New Mexico 5:00 - Growing up 8:00 - Being sober 15:00 - Ultimate Fighter TV Show vs UFC 24:00 - Team Alpha Male 28:40 - What are the sacrifices you made for the sport 40:10 - Beginning of Joe Jitsu 47:10 - How much of fighting is mental vs physical 56:05 - Why did you stop? 1:04:00 - The bug is gone (the need to fight) 1:0900 - Did it just not work out for some ppl training? 1:15:00 - Retirement and his wife 1:27:30 - The decision to purchase in Nevada 1:39:30 - Closing questions ------------ Quickly- I'm Scott Groves - Husband, Father, Loan Officer, Coach, Author, Podcaster, and Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. UFC 259 is being billed as the best card of 2021 and it may very well live up to it. 3 Title fights in Yan vs Aljo, Nunez vs Anderson and Jan vs Izzy, plus the return of Thiago Santos, Dominick Cruz and Joe Benavidez amongst the many other great fights.
Zane Simon & Connor Ruebusch are back with the MMA Vivisection PRELIMS SHOW, breaking down a set of TEN bouts on the 15-bout UFC 259 PPV: 'Blachowicz vs Adesnaya' Preliminary Card. "The UFC has pulled out all the stops for this weekend’s PPV card. Featuring ranked talent from top to bottom, the main card is headlined by a trio of title fight, with Israel Adesanya taking on Jan Blachowicz, Megan Anderson challenging Amanda Nunes, and ALjamain Sterling taking his shot at Petr Yan. Throw former title challenger Thiago Santos in there along with Khabib heir apparent Islam Makhachev and the stakes are sure to be high comes Saturday night. That even goes for the undercard, where former champion Dominick Cruz will take on rising talent Casey Kenney. A card has to be deep when former multiple time title challenger Joe Benavidez can’t even get feature billing." - Zane Simon For those fans who wish to dive deeper into the MAIN CARD, check out that version of the MMA Vivi which airs at 2pm Central today, Thurs., March 4th., 2021, right here on our SC channel. Check out the show on YouTube!Follow Fitz Twitter: @BrendanFitzTVInstagram: @brendanfitztvIn this episode, I start by paying tribute to Joe Benavidez. It looks like his goal of winning a UFC title will go unfulfilled, but he will be remembered as a great fighter and better person.I also have to give props where it's due to our new UFC Flyweight Champ Deiveson Figueiredo, who improved to 19-1 with an emphatic victory on Fight Island. Then, I realized we just hit the 3-year-anniversary of my first Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series show back on July 18, 2017... the night that introduced Sean O'Malley on his road to being a UFC star.
Connor and Phil break down the incredible action in UFC 251's three title fights, and look forward to the rematch between Deiveson Figueiredo and Joe Benavidez. Jose Aldo came as close to beating Max Holloway as he ever will, and even closer to dying in the Octagon. Thanks Leon! Jorge Masvidal was in better shape than we had expected. It didn't matter Max Holloway is a liar. HE IS A LIAR Could Joe B have won that first Figueiredo fight without the clash of heads?

Fight Site godfather and boxing historian Kyle McLachlan joins the show this week, not only to break down Tyson Fury's incredible win over Deontay Wilder, but to preview one of our most anticipated UFC fights of the year. Joe Benavidez is probably the best to never win a belt, but Deiveson Figueiredo is the future of the division--is Joe B too old for destiny? How did Tyson Fury dominate Deontay Wilder so thoroughly? Did Paul Felder and Dan Hooker lift one another up, headfirst right into their shared ceiling?

This week on Heavy Hands, we're looking forward to two very big and very interesting fights, as well as reviewing the violence visited on our beloved boy Junior Dos Santos by Francis Ngannou last weekend. Topics: Has Jon Jones ever faced a fighter like Thiago Santos, and how much does that matter? Holly Holm is like a larger, less skilled Valentina Shevchenko. Is that enough to beat the double champ Nunes? (probably not) Demian Maia just barely beat Jorge Masvidal. Does Ben Askren have enough Maia in him to do the same? It's going to be super funny when Jan of Rivia just takes Luke Rockhold's head off all because he spent the last half decade ensuring that he'd leave his chin at 185 Junior Dos Santos, and the overhand he didn't throw hard enough Joe Benavidez rules, and Jussier Formiga looked better than ever, and WHY IS ALL OF THIS HAPPENING TO THIS AWESOME DIVISION

His journey has been quite a ride from his early years in Texas to growing up in Las Cruces, New Mexico as one of three boys with a single mom.His love of competition but lack of size led him to being a standout wrestler. But during his teenage years, he also battled drugs and alcohol. After getting sober, he found a passion for mixed martial arts and became a contender in short order. Now, years later, he is still a top contender in the UFC.
UFC: Cejudo vs Dillashaw marked the promotion's first event on ESPN+, which is another thing you're supposed to buy to follow this sport. It was one hell of a good card, and it ended with an unexpected--but somewhat anticlimactic--bang. On this week's episode of Heavy Hands, we're breaking it all down. Topics include: How come TJ Dillashaw got murked like that, and did the weight cut have anything to do with it (probably, yes) Has Henry Cejudo's win done anything to help save the UFC's flyweight division? Old man strength in action: breaking down Donald Cerrone, Joe Benavidez, and Glover Teixeira's crafty performances Geoff Neal, and other names you should get used to hearing You still have to remember Belal Muhammad's name, though
