Bloody Elbow fight experts, Zane Simon & Eddie Mercado, are BACK tonight – Sat, Oct 23rd, to breakdown the UFC Vegas 41 ‘Paulo Costa vs. Marvin Vettori' event. The guys will have hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event. (SPOILERS...) This afternoon the UFC brought us yet another (the 9th in a row actually) Fight Night card from the smaller octagon at the APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, airing LIVE on ESPN+. The UFC Vegas 41 event showcased top-ranked MW Championship foes, Paulo ‘The Eraser' Costa, (No. 2), & ‘The Italian Dream' Marvin Vettori, (No. 5). Neither combatant had fought since their defeats at the hands of Israel Adesanya at UFC 263 & UFC 253, respectively. The main event contest became a 205lbs catchweight/LHW bout just a few days ago, when “The Eraser” failed to make weight. This brawl became an instant classic. Costa was warned about his hands more than once & had a point removed for an early eye-poke in the 2nd Rd. We got a solid 5 rds of action, pressure, blows, strikes & aggression from both men. After all of that, the judges decided Vettori was the unanimous victor, it was close, but this felt like the right call. Prior to that, our LW Co-Main event today had Grant ‘KGD' Dawson enter the Octagon on an 8-fight win streak against Rick/y ‘The Gladiator' Glenn. In a solid back-n-forth effort from both men, it went the distance resulting in the judges deciding on a Majority Draw, which is always a major bummer for everyone involved. On the 8-fight prelims card, our featured prelim won FOTN for the overall event -- Gregory Rodrigues proved victorious with a standing TKO via punches in the 2nd Rd over Jun Yong Park. Gregory hit Park with gigantic right hands, rocking him & sending him stumbling, took advantage of his foes weakness, followed it all up with a massive uppercut which put him to sleep standing. Also, in our 4th bout of the night, we had Jai ‘The Black Country Banger' Herbert strike the crap out of Khama ‘The Death Star' Worthy over the course of about 2+1/2 mins or so - 1st Rd stoppage. Overall, this massive 14-bout card saw 2 1st Rd finishes, 4 KO/TKO's, 1 sub, & 8 decisions, 1 split. Plus, 1 majority draw. Rounding things out, bonuses for putting forth POTN efforts went to Alex Caceres & Marvin Vettori; FOTN honors went to Gregory Rodrigues vs Jun Yong Park. How will these fight cancelations impact potential UFC 260 PPV buys? Auger breaks it all down and provides his UFC 260 PPV buys estimate. Secondly, Auger then discusses the recent news that the PFL 2021 season may be put on hold due to various lawsuits against the promotion. Mike Russell first reported the news on Twitter. Auger breaks down what this means for PFL and even touches on whether this could be the end for the promotion. Next, Auger discusses Miesha Tate's return to the UFC and what this means for the UFC and ONE Championship considering her role as ONE Championship VP. In the co-main event, we have a Lightweight tilt between Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson entering the octagon with a 25-4 record vs. Charles ‘Do Bronx’ Oliveira’s 29-8, so far to date. Also on the card, we have an exciting women’s Strawweight bout taking place between up-and-comer Mackenzie Dern and the Brazilian brawler Virna ‘Carcara’ Jandiroba. Dern is coming at this on a two-fight win streak, having had defeated both Randa Markos and Hannah Cifers this year. UFC Fight Night 183 features a short-notice, life-saving bout between Paul Felder and Rafael dos Anjos. If it were not for the fill-in, chances are we were looking at a main event between Abdul Razak Alhasan and Khaos Williams. Alhasan and Williams will now feature in the co-main event which promises to be exciting. Sean Strickland will make what seems to be an immediate return to the UFC octagon to face Brendan Allen, another fighter who lost an opponent to the COVID-19 pandemic. The best part about UFC Vegas 14 is that there are 3 very competitive women's bouts that feature prospects Kay Hansen, Cory McKenna, Miranda Granger and Kanako Murata. Both Ashley Yoder and Randa Markos will be the UFC veterans hoping to put a stop to Granger and Murata's aspirations, respectively. Last but certainly not least, the main card will feature a great fight between Ultimate Fighter alumni Julian Marquez and Saparbek Safarov. Overall, this 9-bout card saw just 1 swift finish in Rd 1, no subs, 2 exciting KO/TKOs, & 7 decisions, 2 split. Paul Felder, entered the octagon on five days’ notice, stepping away from the commentary table, as the #6 Best UFC Lightweight, making him an easy favorite, despite having lost his last bout against Dan Hooker at UFC on ESPN+ 26; via Split Decision back in February of this year, however, odds makers had him listed as a slight underdog. Prior to that loss to Hooker, he was on a two-fight win streak. The impressive striker now holds a 17-5 record. The 36-year-old Philly native, was pitted up against our opponent, former Lightweight Champion, the #16 current best Welterweight veteran ‘RDA’ - Rafael dos Anjos; fighting his 30th fight in the UFC over the past 12 years. Our Brazilian combatant, was coming off a two-fight losing streak, holding an impressive 29-13 fight record, and entered the octagon as the favorite. The 36-year-old grappler had a 3” height deficit and 1/2” reach deficit going against him in his efforts to defeat ‘The Irish Dragon’ tonight... but that didn’t matter when it was all said and done, RDA walked away with the ‘W’, via split decision. Directly after the fight, RDA indicated his next bout should be against none other than Conor McGregor. Also on the card, a lightening fast Welterweight scrap for our co-main event; it was an almost instantaneous bout between the younger competitor, 26-year old “Khaos” ‘The Oxfighter’ Williams, who entered the octagon an underdog for his second fight in the UFC, despite having a debut which featured a 30-second knockout; he took on Abdul ‘Judo Thunder’ Razak Alhassan, with a 10-3 fight record, at 35-yrs of age, coming at this bout under the banner of Fortis MMA out of Texas; having lost his last bout against Mounir Lazzaz earlier this year in July, via Unanimous Decision. The night showcased a long-awaited & highly-anticipated WW clash between Tyron Woodley & Colby Covington. Unfortunately, the bout was terribly anti-clamactic, especially for a highly-touted main event. Covington backed Woodley up against the fence for nearly 25 minutes, battering away at him with elbows & knees, until he eventually succumbed to a fight-ending injury to the ribs; Niko Price & Donald Cerrone faced off in the co-main event, which was actually entertaining — up until the fight was scored a majority draw. In the main card opener, Mackenzie Dern increased her clout in the UFC, as the BJJ virtuoso finished veteran Randa Markos via an armbar sub in the 1st Rd. In a light HW performance, Johnny Walker also came away with a 1st Rd finish when he put a swift stop to contender Ryan Spann by raining down elbows & punches for his TKO win. Right before the co-main event of the evening, Khamzat Chimaev continued to impress, when the undefeated crowd-puller put veteran middleweight Gerald Meerschaert to sleep with a 17-second knockout punch. The undercard portion of the night had an impressive 6 finishes out of 8 bouts. In our opener, Tyson Nam finished Jerome Rivera via TKO - punches.
