Hi Everyone, In this episode, I got to sit down with Ben10 Nguyen, a former top 8 UFC Flyweight and it was really cool to actually be able have Brian Ebersole sit in with us at the start to talk about this crazy moment that changed the trajectory of Ben's entire life. From growing up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to being the non-academic sibling, Ben had been fighting for a while and was at this point of deciding whether he was going to settle into a more 'normal' life when he received a call from Brian Ebersole at Tiger Muay Thai. Ben also went viral for his fight against Julian Wallace and was featured on Lawrence Kenshin's Striking Breakdowns and it was cool to listen to his mindset going into that fight. Nowadays Ben spends most of his time coaching and is a great wealth of knowledge for MMA - if you're interested in those things check out the links below! Enjoy! Joe Benavidez of UFC fame joins us today with Scott Groves at On The Edge Podcast! Scott and Joe go in depth into the career of Benavidez, from the very beginning in a New Mexico bar to his current role in society as a Real Estate Agent catering to retired public figures. We discuss movies, families, marriage, tons of martial arts, and everything in between. This is such a great chat with an absolute legend! Here is a gratuitous copy/paste from Wikipedia about him: Benavidez was born on July 31, 1984, in San Antonio, Texas, and is of Mexican descent. Benavidez grew up with his single mother and two brothers.[7] He attended Las Cruces High School, where he began training boxing. At the age of 16, he also began wrestling, discipline in which he became a New Mexico State champion. He continued to wrestle for one semester at William Penn University before dropping out. From college onwards Benavidez struggled with alcohol and drug abuse before becoming sober, subsequently turning his interest into mixed martial arts.[7] After fighting in smaller shows while working as a screen printer in Las Cruces, New Mexico, he joined up with Urijah Faber's Team Alpha Male in 2007. Benavidez has since fought in Dream, WEC and most recently the UFC. His fighting style has drawn comparisons to training partner and former WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber. On April 27, 2010, the Mayor and City Council of the City of Las Cruces proclaimed April 27 as Joseph Benavidez Day in Las Cruces.[8] 0:00 - Start 2:30 - Fighting in New Mexico 5:00 - Growing up 8:00 - Being sober 15:00 - Ultimate Fighter TV Show vs UFC 24:00 - Team Alpha Male 28:40 - What are the sacrifices you made for the sport 40:10 - Beginning of Joe Jitsu 47:10 - How much of fighting is mental vs physical 56:05 - Why did you stop? 1:04:00 - The bug is gone (the need to fight) 1:09:00 - Did it just not work out for some ppl training? 1:15:00 - Retirement and his wife 1:27:30 - The decision to purchase in Nevada 1:39:30 - Closing questions ------------ Quickly- I'm Scott Groves - Husband, Father, Loan Officer, Coach, Author, Podcaster, and Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
