In the fifth part of our series on John Soane, we discussed his designs for speculative housing developments in central London, another building in the middle of the city for the Bank of England's National Debt Redemption Office, and his various hypothetical schemes for transforming the city with a thick encrustation of Corinthian columns. We also discussed his work for the Royal Hospital Chelsea, some of which survives to this day. We talked about John Gwynne's 'London & Westminster Improved (1766) and the ongoing problem of London and Westminster's disorderly urbanism, which Soane's unbuilt schemes cannot convincingly overcome — as always, he is at his best when constrained! We've opened nominations for Mad Marchness!, our March tournament of book picks. Plus, the failure of the Hugos and the rise of Romantasy. And we begin our first impressions of Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne.
Welcome to the first episode of Mining Media, a short brainstorming style series that will come out every 3rd Tuesday of the month where I discuss a book, TV series, movie, video game, or any other kind of media I've been binging and think about what kind of inspiration and ideas you can take from it to use at your table and better your gaming experience. This first episode dives into John Gwynne's The Faithful and the Fallen book series. It's generally low-fantasy and skirts the edges of grimdark, with plenty of battles, violence, and classic fantasy tropes worn proudly on its chain shirt. It subverts some tropes, leans into others, but reads very relatable to tabletop RPG campaigns, which I think makes it a great series to talk about mining ideas from. Definitely, did Chad love every well-blocked and intricately described large-scale battle found within these pages? Most certainly. But even a battle lord with a finely refined war palet can find themselves fatigued yet oddly satisfied covered in the gore of countless innocents still somehow looking forward to future John Gwynne adventures . . . and a shower. But allow what is shaping up to be certainly top-five fantasy book review podcast episode descriptions of all time to be cut short and delay you no more. This month we read and review The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne! Like all of our reviews, the first part is spoiler free. Here's a little about The Shadow of the Gods:After the gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrið.Now a new world is rising, where power-hungry jarls feud and monsters stalk the woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. Now, as whispers of war echo across the mountains and fjords, fate follows in the footsteps of three people: a huntress on a dangerous quest, a noblewoman who has rejected privilege in pursuit of battle fame, and a thrall who seeks vengeance among the famed mercenaries known as the Bloodsworn. All three will shape the fate of the world as it once more falls under the shadow of the gods . . . The Shadow of the Gods By John Gwynne "Gwynne, a Viking reenactor, puts in the work, with fine historical details that make the story come to life. This is a duly exciting start to the series."―Publishers Weekly on The Shadow of the Gods "A Time of Dread reminds me of why I became a fantasy enthusiast in the first place. What's not to love?"―Peter Newman on A Time of Dread "A series that promises the same degree of complexity and depth found in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time books and George R. R.
