Although he may never surpass him, of the Chargers played their cards right, Herbert could steal an MVP away from Mahomes. It's a no-brainer for Los Angeles to lock up their star QB for as long as possible. The guys also get into what the Chargers could get in return for trading out of the first round. Even though free agency has slowed, the Chargers are not done yet and could make one more splash with John Johnson III. Locked On Chargers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Chargers
Morgan Fox was excellent for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022 and even after his most successful season, the team was able to bring him back in free agency. This was an incredibly important signing for the Chargers as Fox has been quietly one of the better interior rushers in the NFL and would have been very hard to replace. Now that Fox is back, hopefully we get to see him pass rush alongside Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack which we didn't see much last year. General Manager Tom Telesco deserves a lot credit for finding a way to now bring back the team's biggest internal free agents with Fox and Trey Pipkins. Another free agent that could be the next domino for the Chargers is safety John Johnson III. With Nasir Adderley likely out of the picture now, Derwin James needs a new running mate and Johnson could look for a reunion with Brandon Staley. In this podcast episode, we discuss the latest updates on the Los Angeles Chargers' off-season moves. The team recently signed Eric Kendricks to a 2-year deal worth $13 million, Trey Pipkins to a 3-year deal worth $21 million, and Easton Stick to a 1-year deal worth $1.8 million. They also tendered Foster Sarell and Cameron Dicler as exclusive rights free agents. There are also rumors circulating that the Chargers could sign Dalton Shultz and John Johnson III, two high-profile free agents. The team also released Matt Feiler to save $6.5 million in cap space and signed Morgan Fox to a 2-year deal. However, the biggest news is that running back Austin Ekeler has reportedly requested a trade. Ekeler has been a key player for the Chargers in recent years, and his potential departure could have a significant impact on the team's offense. The NFL news cycle is winding back up and Monday was just the tip of the iceberg with the franchise tag deadline on Tuesday and the new league year getting started next week. Mary Kay Cabot and Dan Labbe discussed four Browns questions to get up to speed on the latest as they prepare to get working in free agency and the trade market. Dan has four "Are we sure?" questions for Mary Kay. Are we sure signing Bates wouldn't be akin to John Johnson III last year? Are we sure moving on from Ethan Pocic is the smart move? Are we sure the Browns won't at least consider trading Nick Chubb? Are we sure Kevin Stefanski calling plays is what's best for the Browns? Want to get involved in Football Insider? The Ravens placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on quarterback Lamar Jackson on Tuesday after the two sides failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension. Mary Kay Cabot and Dan Labbe start Tuesday's podcast by reacting to the news and what it means for the Ravens and Browns. Then they get into some Hey, Mary Kay! questions about Deshaun Watson's contract and whether it was a foregone conclusion it would have to be restructured when it was signed. They discuss Andrew Berry's approach to free agency this year and which Browns free agents they would want back. They also get into what went wrong with the John Johnson III signing. Lamar Jackson promised to put on a show on Sunday, and while the Browns pushed the Ravens to the very end, he and the Ravens held on for a 23-20 victory in a big AFC North showdown. Cleveland's Cade York lined up for a potential game-tying 60-yard field goal attempt with 2:01 left, and it was deflected wide and left by Malik Harrison. The Browns had one last-ditch chance at a miracle finish, but Donovan Peoples-Jones was forced to fumble after a 19-yard catch as time expired. The Ravens recovered, but without any timeouts, the Browns wouldn't have had time to line up for another play anyway. Jackson orchestrated a vintage Jackson drive at the end of the first half to give the Ravens their first lead of the game, 13-10, with 1:57 left in the half.Facing a third and 11 from the Browns' 19, Jackson slipped away from Myles Garrett and found receiver Rashod Bateman wide open for a 26-yard pass down the right side. Ronnie Harrison missed the tackle and Bateman rumbled for another 10 yards. Jackson ran for 10 yards on a third and 3, weaving past John Johnson III in the backfield. He found tight end Isaiah Likely over the middle for 16 yards to the 17 and then ran it again himself for 10 to the 7. Gus Edwards took it from there, finding a gaping hole on the left side for the 7-yard TD run.Brissett took over at his 12 after a holding call on the kickoff return, and it looked good when Marcus Peters was flagged 15 yards for pass interference to the Ravens' 40. Linebacker Justin Houston lit it up from there, sacking Brissett on back-to-back plays, and stripping him on the second. They punted two plays later from near midfield, and the Ravens ran one more play from their 8 before jogging to the locker room. The Browns were fortunate to be down only 13-10 at the half. Early in the second quarter, receiver Devin Duvernay ripped off a 46-yard punt return to the Browns' 21, with D'Ernest Johnson losing contain. But the Ravens moved only 5 yards to the 16 before Owusu-Koramoah blitzed and defended the pass to Kenyan Drake. Baltimore settled for a 34-yard Tucker field goal that made it 10-6 with 10:05 left in the half.LinkedInLinkedIn Jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. 'It's a commitment thing': John Johnson III believes Browns defense needs full dedicationBEREA − It's a motto that is linked to a completely different NFL franchise. However, Browns safety John Johnson III believes there's something to be said about the Raiders' "Commitment to excellence" mantra. Specifically, Johnson believes there's something the Browns defense can take from the first word of that motto to change the trajectory of what has been one of the league's worst defenses statistically. "Yeah, it's a commitment thing," Johnson said Wednesday. "When practice is over and our day is done, you can't just run out of the building and forget about your job. I think we need everyone in this building to really be a 100% in on the task at hand. Right now I think we're at a place where that's not the case. So whatever we gotta do to get as many guys, if not everyone in on the same page I think that's what it is. Because that's the only way things are going to change."The Browns defense is currently tied for 23rd in the league, allowing 361.3 yards a game, entering Sunday's game at Baltimore. They're tied for 30th in points allowed at 27.2 points a game. The pass defense, which had been better against Pittsburgh and Atlanta, even the Los Angeles Chargers, allowed Patriots rookie Bailey Zappe to throw for 309 yards in just his second start. The Browns are 19th in pass defense with 229.8 yards a game. The run defense, which was better against New England after being gashed by the Falcons and Chargers, is 24th at 131.5 yards per game. That's where the talk about commitment comes into play. Specifically, it's where the talk about a commitment to accountability to finally change those statistics. Johnson isn't the first one to speak on the commitment subject since the Browns dropped their third consecutive game last Sunday to the New England Patriots. He's just the most established player on the defense, at least in terms of years in the league, to bring it up.Linebacker Sione Takitaki spoke along a similar vein on Monday, a day after the Patriots loss. The message was one formulated by the leadership group among the Browns players shortly after the game. Both Johnson and Takitaki are among the handful of Browns defenders who have at least four years in the league. The former is in his fifth season in the NFL, and second in Cleveland, and the latter is in his fourth season after being drafted in the third round in 2019 by the Browns.Outside of nine-year pro Jadeveon Clowney and seventh-year pro Myles Garrett, there's few more experienced that those two on the defense. Now, it's about that message getting through across the defense in time for Sunday's game. That change starts with the preparation each player puts in during a given week. The Browns' work day generally starts before 8 a.m. and last until at least 5 p.m., between on-field and off-the-field work. What players like Johnson believe is that's not enough time dedicated to the work. As with anything someone may want to master, there's work away from the organized training that is necessary. Among the ideas has been film study away from the facility, extra time dedicated to looking not just at the opponent, but at themselves. It's all about figuring out ways to show up on Sunday, specifically this Sunday against the Ravens, ready to play at their highest level.#Browns #ClevelandBrowns #NFL #NFLWeek7 #BaltimoreRavens #Ravens Learn more about your ad choices.
