In the spring of 1935, nineteen year-old Orson Welles was living in New York, appearing on stage in Katharine Cornell's stock company and workin on CBS' American School of the Air and The March of Time. The next year, Welles was on the debut episode of CBS's Columbia Workshop. The program's creator Irving Reiss recognized Orson's talent, while Welles studied the creative risks The Workshop took. He began to assemble his Mercury Theater troupe just as FDR launched the Federal Theater Project. John Houseman invited Welles to be part of an African-American theater unit in Harlem. Their first co-production was an adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth. Welles changed the setting to a mythical island. Voodoo took the place of Scottish witchcraft. The play opened on April 14th, 1936, at the Lafayette Theater in Harlem. It received incredible reviews. By that autumn, Welles was traveling between Chicago and New York, appearing on Mutual Broadcasting's Wonder Show, and on The Columbia Workshop. On Sunday April 11th, 1937 The Workshop broadcast a verse-play written especially for radio by Archibald MacLeish. It was called The Fall of the City. It was an allegory on the rise of fascism. The broadcast took place at the massive Seventh regiment armory on 67th street and Park avenue in New York. Reiss used over one-hundred fifty extras, and entrusted Welles to be the narrator. To get proper sonic differentiation, they built radio's first narration booth. The Fall of The City was selected by The New York Times as one of the outstanding broadcasts of 1937. Time magazine noted that it proved to listeners radio was science's gift to poetry and poetic drama. The Fall of the City made Orson Welles a star. Mutual Broadcasting was about to give him the opportunity of a lifetime.
“If we were to offer a symbol of what Harlem has come to mean in a short span of twenty years, it would be another statue of liberty on the landward side of New York. Harlem represents the Negro’s latest thrust towards Democracy.” -- Alain Locke This is Part Two of our two-part look at the birth of Black Harlem, a look at the era BEFORE the 1920s, when the soul and spirit of this legendary neighborhood was just beginning to form. The Harlem Renaissance is a cultural movement which describes the flowering of the arts and political thought which occurred mostly within the Black community of Harlem between 1920 and the 1940s. In particular the 1920s were described by writer Langston Hughes as “the period when the Negro was in vogue.” The moment when the white mainstream turned its attention to black culture. But how Harlem become a mecca of Black culture and "the Capital of Black America"? This is the story of constructing a cultural movement on the streets of Upper Manhattan in the 1910s. From the stages of the Lafayette Theater to the soapboxes of Speakers Corner. From the pulpits to the salons (both hair and literary)! WITH stories of Marcus Garvey, Madam C.J. Walker, Arturo Schomburg and many more. Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/boweryboys See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Batya Zachter (Age 22) grew up in Los Angeles, California and is the second to oldest of six children in her family. She went to Bais Yaakov Los Angeles and attended two years of seminary in Israel. Batya has been a Madricha for various dorms and camps during the past few years. She loves to enhance other's experiences, and always strives to create a fun and comfortable atmosphere wherever she goes. It is in Batya's nature to bring her ideas and imagination, and to make it a reality. She refers to it as “Making dreams come true.” Batya has been involved in many plays, Jewish movies, comedy skits, drama camps, and directed a performance one summer in a Kiruv camp as well. She loves to express herself through being part of a performance, but as a director and event planner, she is now able to use her many talents to help others express themselves in a Frum way. Batya also loves to lead events for teens. Whenever there is an opportunity to create a fun and meaningful program, she grabs it. She has organized and lead night camps, Tisha B'av programs, dance classes, and loves to create music videos for friends, families, schools, and bat mitzvas to help people bond in a creative way. As she is a Social Worker(LMSW) by profession, Batya has the ability to direct and plan her shows and events in a sensitive, calm, and organized manner, making sure everyone feels good during the process. Batya had the idea to create Girls' Talent Tour in November 2018. From the moment she had this idea, there was nothing that could stop her from accomplishing this dream. Batya partnered up with Hatzolah of Staten Island for her debut in December 2018. Rivka and Moishe Weber, the heads of Hatzolah of Staten Island stated: “She was so passionate about her plan that her enthusiasm was truly contagious.” Being that this was Batya's first major event, she quickly realized the enormous details entailed in creating this “Dream Show.” A few of the many aspects included: selecting the talent and judges, booking the venue, staging, lighting, sound systems, ticket sales, advertisement, talent coaching and much more. Continuing her full-time job as a Social Worker, Batya worked to create the show she imagined. The first Girls' Talent Competition was such a success. The talent was truly incredible, and the show was amazing and entertaining. First, second, and third place winners were selected by three remarkable judges: Shaindel Antelis, Maayan Davis, and Devorah Schwartz. The feedback from the show was amazing! This lead various communities to reach out to Batya and ask her to go on tour and select new talent. Batya's next show will IY'H be on February 24th in the Lafayette Theater near Monsey, Passaic, Teaneck, and Monroe. The proceeds from this show are to raise money for Toras Dovid Community Kollel, a Kollel for Baalei Teshuva. Batya is very excited about this show. The very talented composer and singer, Nechama Cohen, was added as a fourth guest judge for this upcoming show. The size of this theater is more than double the size of last show's venue. The talent chosen for this show is something to really look forward to. You can purchase tickets by visiting the website dreamontalenttickets.com or by calling Tzippy Simon at 201-983-3748. Batya is looking forward to continuing to create more events in the future. Follow Batya on Instagram @dream_on_events and on Facebook.
Recently in Lafayette IN (home of our podcast), racial tensions flared due to separate events. There was angry debate, along with substantive discussions. Hate groups had posted racist signs and flyers in prominent places, and two groups were booked to appear locally that many believed to be racist performers. To counter all that, a group of musicians have decided to perform in a show called "No Time To Hate" at the Lafayette Theater. We spoke to one of those performers, Christopher Lee from the Grateful Dead cover band, Graciously Departed. We talked about the band and its upcoming gigs, especially No Time To Hate, and the idea behind the show. It's something other communities could do to help ease tensions and promote positivity. We end with a song from one of the participating acts, Sheeza, a brilliant band with a desire for social justice that comes from the heart.
Jason Wells plays the blues and rock, sells his own coffee blend, runs an open mic night, and generally works his butt off. Which is good for you, since you can see the fruits of his labor on stages across America, and in Lafayette IN on 12/30. His band will perform at the Lafayette Theater with a local band called Graciously Departed (a nice dose of Dead!), and up-and-coming singer songwriter Tara Marlow. The show will start with Marlow's acoustic music, follwed by the GP and their happy set, then Jason Wells and Friends with some crunchy rockin party jams. Jason talked about his music, his coffee brand, how to run an open mic, and a cool deal for those who buy tickets prior to the show. We conclude with a Jason jam and a Merry Crimble to all!
In 1967, we opened our new copy of the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", expecting something brilliant and groundbreaking. Turned out to be much more, as Pepper became one of the most influential albums, not only in the Beatles' canon, but in all of contemporary music. Members of local Lafayette band Frank Muffin, along with 20 musicians from the community and elsewhere, will be staging that album from start to finish, with extras, December 9, at Lafayette Theater. It's a mammoth undertaking, and we spoke to Frank Muffin's Brittany and Hans Rees about the idea and the process of rounding up band members, dividing the labor, and coming up with a fitting tribute to this cultural landmark. Details: Tickets locally at the Theater Box Office, $10 advance, $15 day of show. Also available at People's Brewing, JL Records, and McGuire Music. Proceeds to a wonderful charity, Therapeion, a therapeutic equestrian center in Brookston, IN

Three Cities is a band on a mission to keep the fun in hard rock. We spoke to Patrick Barry Brown, guitarist for this rock band whose members hail from Indy, Fort Wayne, and Marion, IN. They recorded a live set in May at the Lafayette Theater, in Lafayette, IN. The theater is a beautifully renovated and expertly run music venue that was once an Art Deco style movie theater. Three Cities' "Live from Lafayette" release consists of a few favorite originals from their previous sets, along with new original music. It all has edge without being an overt attempt at "edginess". That's due to the band's philosophy that "this ought to be fun". And it is, with big ballsy vocals, guitar jams and swooping keyboards. Patrick gave us some band history and his thoughts on music. We finish up with a sample from "Live from Lafayette" called Walkin', which has a cool story behind the tune's origin.
