Caring what people think is important as you build a business. And building your reputation is what Lida Citroën does best. Lida Citroën is an award-winning branding and reputation management authority who designs and enhances the identities of executives, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders globally. As CEO and founder of LIDA360, LLC, Lida is sought-after for her knowledge of personal brand development, reputation management, leadership communication, and online positioning. Lida's popular TEDx Talk, Talks at Google presentation, and multiple courses on LinkedIn Learning showcase her empowering delivery style and message. She regularly presents business workshops on reputation management, personal branding, executive presence, leadership communication, and using social media to self-promote, helping employees and leaders build a personal brand that supports the business. She also works to support military veterans as they make the transition from a military to a civilian career. Lida is the author of 5 best-selling books on reputation management including her latest "Control the Narrative: The Executive's Guide to Building, Pivoting and Repairing Your Reputation," published in May 2021 from Kogan Page. Why should you care about your reputation? You have a personal brand. Even if you're just now launching your business, you are already known for acting, interacting and dressing a certain way. How you treat people, how you present yourself and how you run your business has a deep impact on how others perceive you! Those perceptions affect whether people want to work with you in the future. What can you do about it? When you intend to have a big impact, your reputation gets bigger and the stakes get higher. Lida Citroën coaches entrepreneurs on how to build, reclaim or transform the way people perceive them. In this episode, Lida discusses accountability, public perception, and why your reputation can be the foundation for a strong and enduring business. Quotes “Everyone has a brand - by design or by default. You're known for certain things - how you've been living your life and showing up. You've formed some type of reputation in the minds of people who interact with you. What I do is to help people take control of that, authentically.” “One thing I help my clients do is separate reputation from fact. It's hard when you're being dragged. Separate what happened from what you feel about what happened. What are the short and long term implications? Has it actually damaged your career? I also help them decide who their audience is.” “We have to know that someone's perception of us is going to drive them to want to work with us…or not.” “If people don't see you and perceive you in the way that you want, you're going to miss out on opportunities.” Links mentioned in this episode: You can navigate to Lida Citroën's website here: www.lida360.com Watch Lida's TedTalk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BloWnsJCRw Subscribe to Lida's Youtube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/c/LidaCitroen Lida is very active on LinkedIn. "Part of being entrepreneur is that sense of unknowing." - Lida CitroënIn this week's episode, we have Lida Citroën. She was in corporate America for 20 years moving from one industry to the next. It's not that she can't do one job perfectly, it's more of accomplishing so much in that one position and then challenging herself to be as successful in another one, in a totally different industry. She established Lida360 last 2008 in the worst economy. She thought of helping businesses to do strategic branding and global positioning. Lida turned these trying times to guide other businesses on how to position themselves to be competitive in a very complicated market. Lida connected with other business owners and had informational interviews with them. Surprisingly, the advice that she got consistently from other successful business owners, was to NOT have a business plan yet. She was told that creating a business plan at the onset will cause you to miss the organic part of the business. She mentioned that as she started her business thinking that she will help businesses in doing marketing, as she was doing for years. And then personal branding found her and she fell in love with it. A personal brand is a narrative or a value proposition that defines yourself. She believes every business, in every industry, should have this. It is creating a story where you tell who you are authentically and with consistency. Key Takeaways [3:55] Everyone has a brand or a reputation; whether it's intentional or not, that's another story. Everyone needs to be thinking about this, no matter where they are in their career. [5:45] A good measurement for reputation and brand success is knowing you're consistently attracting the right kind of opportunities. [12:40] It's important to discard what's no longer serving you as you adapt to a new culture. [13:15] Personal branding is all about you and it's centered around you, but context and the situation matters. You can have a refined message and still be authentic to you. [16:55] Where people fall short in their personal brand is that they're trying to appeal to everybody. This is the wrong message you're putting out. [18:25] Lida shares a story where a client of hers needed a reputation repair when they hadn't actually done anything wrong. Sometimes you can have your reputation tarnished just by who you are associated with. [21:50] What might be an innocent share of a meme can turn into a big explosion on social media. There are a lot of little landmines you have to navigate through today. [23:10] It's natural to disable all social media when the world is attacking you, but that means only the negative narrative is getting spread around. [27:30] Unfortunately, so many people just react to social media instead of creating meaningful intention around it. [28:50] The biggest contributor to a tarnished reputation is that people have forgotten about the importance of boundaries and privacy. You can be authentic without having it all “hang out.” Sometimes, it's best not to share that political/religious/etc. message publicly, especially if it's not in line with your brand and the work that you do. [34:10] Listener challenge: Start paying attention to other people's perceptions about you. Quotable Quotes “If we're strategic and intentional about the way we want people to experience us, then we tend to attract the opportunities in people that are most meaningful. If we leave it to chance, we're giving up all that power.” “If you interact with people, you need to be thinking about reputation and branding. It's simply where all the power in our career lies.” “If you're a leader, it's not about you.” “Being authentic doesn't mean you know everything about me. It just means what I do share is real. I am allowed to keep things private.” Resources Mentioned Sponsored by: Darley.com. Connect with Lida: Lida360.com, and @Lida360 on Twitter Buy Lida's books: Lida360.com/store

When it comes to hiring, veterans are often overlooked. Many organizations have worked very hard to bring their unemployment numbers closer to other groups with some success. However, there is one related group of candidates that is even more often overlooked: military spouses. This episode will examine why that is a mistake on the part of employers. Our first guest is Lida Citreon, founder of LIDA360 (https://www.lida360.com/). A leader in reputation management and personal branding, Lida has worked with hundreds of international business leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals, designing and promoting authentic, passionate, and intentional reputation strategies that drive results. She also focuses on building up veteran and military spouse talent. We are also joined by Tina Flores, SPHR and 16 year military spouse. Tina knows all about the struggles that mil spouses face as she’s seen and lived it all. She has had to give birth (2x) without her husband present, she’s had to let go of her former life during a move (New State didn’t recognize a former state’s law school…) and safe to say she’s been married to a man who has been home less than he’s been away. More recently in her career, she has been focused on the more human side of business and has found her happy place in human resources. She’s been performing HR-ish roles since 2011, but has recently made it her mission to focus on this niche as sourcing, cultivating, training, and reviewing teams is where she belongs. Finally, we are also joined by Kayla Eberhardt. She is Program Coordinator, Entrepreneurship at the Institute for Veterans & Military Families (https://ivmf.syracuse.edu/). She is responsible for the coordination and support of objectives related to the growth of the Coalition for Veteran Business (CVOB) and the Center of Excellence in Veteran Entrepreneurship (CoE). Kayla brings a unique perspective to her role through her knowledge as both a former military spouse and daughter of a veteran entrepreneur.
Summary & Ideas for Action Lida Citroën, international reputation management and branding specialist, and CEO of LIDA360, shares her expertise on repairing reputations, and what to include and exclude from your personal brand. Your personal brand is the public extension of you. It represents the expectation of the experience people will get from you. She talks about the importance of protecting your reputation before you need to repair it. Key Takeaways The key question for personal branding is how do you want to live this life, what type of person do you want people to believe you are? What do you want to solve? Do you want to solve issues, do you want to solve things for your family? What problem or issue or concern are you passionate about solving? [9:12] In some cases, people don’t need a new image, but they want awareness of how they got to their image, and how they can maintain it. [10:53] Personal branding is very simple, but not easy. Simple things matter — your LinkedIn profile, how you dress for meetings, and your body language and eye contact. [14:00] Reputation repair is a complex process. How much of the damage is emotional, and how much is financial and professional? In ten years will it have any effect on your business? Does it affect your core audience, or an external audience? Different circumstances require different approaches. You have to accept accountability. [19:20] Posting affects your reputation. When you share something, the person who shared it before you is irrelevant. If it is wrong, or insensitive, the offense attaches to you for sharing it. Social media is part of your reputation management strategy. [21:09] What do you want people to find about you on social media? Who do you want to find you? Social media is not about being flawless. It is about being consistent. Be relatable, human, and compelling to your target audience. Stay real. Your profile should be authentic, vulnerability and all. [23:17] Social media is for collaboration and networking. We form relationships, and create content, ideas, movements, and thoughts. Across all platforms, be consistent with who you are. [29:22] You set your own rules on social media. Social media is a marketing channel, not a place to unwind. [35:37] It can be healthy to observe what your competition is doing on social media. Sometimes you can identify opportunity. It can help identify your unique value proposition, and it can also lead to collaboration. [27:39] It does matter what others think of you. Reputation, or brand, is about an expectation of experience. If the expectation is shattered, the reputation is no longer trusted. Ensure expectations are met.
