Host Meg Wolitzer presents a program celebrating the 100th anniversary of The New Yorker. One of the magazine's strengths has always been its fiction, and honor of this winning literary streak, this year saw the release of the collection, A Century of Fiction in The New Yorker. The quartet of stories on this show is drawn from that volume. The program includes a pithy satire by E. B. White, “Life Cycle of a Literary Genius,” read by Liev Schreiber; “Love,” by William Maxwell, a tender recounting of an collective adolescent crush, read by Fred Hechinger; “Bullet in the Brain,” a powerful reversal of fortune tale by Tobias Wolff, read by Liev Schreiber; and “All Will be Well,” an intriguing tangle of truths and half-truths by Yiyun Li, read by Ann Harada.
In “It's A Wonderful Life,” BEULAH BONDI played the most loving mother to JAMES STEWART. Ma Bailey is the epitome of sweetness, kindness, and supportiveness so it's quite shocking when we meet the Ma Bailey who would have existed had George Bailey not been born. She's cold, bitter, and unkind. It gives Bondi the wonderful opportunity to play two versions of the same character, which she does flawlessly. So to celebrate Mother's Day, Nan and Steve are taking a page from Bondi's playbook as they discuss the good and bad mothers of classic cinema. Well hello again…it's our good friend: the unnecessary remake. That's right, it's time for the film that came out on 06/06/06 (you see what they did there?): “The Omen”. While discussing the atmosphere, mood, and wonderful lead performances in the original, Richard Donner version would have been lovely, we decided to talk about the lackluster lead performances, uneven direction, and straight up “rip off” style of the 2006 remake. The St. Johns build Julia Stiles' Mt. Rushmore, discuss when they first saw Live Schreiber, and dissect how to say this name: Pete Postlethwaite. The film may have been unnecessary, but I assure you: this podcast is NOT! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
The new year is looking Brotastic! Philip and Andrew are back from the break and start off Season 2 of Cinematic Brotastic with Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse, a unique blend of animation styles that don’t clash, but rather creates a one of a kind viewing experience that has the added bonus of being family friendly as well. The Cast includes Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Valez, Zoё Kravitz, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, Nicolas Cage, Kathryn Hahn, Live Schreiber, Chris Pine, Natalie Morales, Oscar Isaac, Greta Lee, and Stan Lee. Philip and Andrew welcome each other back from the break and talk about what they have seen in the meantime. Both saw Skyscraper, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, but not together. Tey then discussed what TV show they were hooked on at the momen: Philip is watching “The Walking Dead’ and Andrew is hooked on “Manifest” on NBC. Now into the Spider-verse! At first Andrew was reluctant to take his children to see the film fearing it would be too violent or inappropriate. However, upon hearing that Philip was going to take his children, Andrew reevaluated his opinion. After looking at a parental guide to how appropriate films are for families, Andrew was comfortable taking his children. Philip and Andrew had few complaints, if you could call them that, about Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse. Green Goblin was huge for some reason, making him more like a monster than a costumed villain. Then there was Prowler, a Batmanesque villain that neither brother was familiar with. Almost thought it was newly invented for the film. This film featured not one Spider-man, but 6 Spider-people. Miles Morales who is the subject of the film, hen there was Peter Parker, we all know him. Next up is Gwen Stacy, a love interest of Peter's, but this version has the spider powers instead. now on to the even lesser known heroes. Spider-man Noir, a Humphrey Bogart style Peter Parker hailing from a black and white dimension, and of all the doors he had to walk. into, he had to walk into ours. Peni Parker, a Japanese animé styled version from the future, sporting a spider-mech suit operated by a spider that was also her father? And last but not least, Spider-Ham, a pig named Peter Porker, who has spider powers. Touching back on the unfamiliarity of the Prowler, Miles Morales has the powers of Spider-man, and then some. On top of wall crawling, he has Venom Strike, a directed energy from his hands that causes paralysis. Then he has camouflage, an ability to match his surroundings that makes him virtually invisible. After looking these up, Philip and Andrew quickly realized they are cannon to the comics. The Brothers Brotastic equally rated this film Two Tickets. It's fun, its family friendly, its unique, and both would go back to the theater in a heartbeat. Until Next time, we'll see you at the movies. And don't forget to check your ticket stubs!
We welcome veteran actor, Liev Schreiber, in Episode 028 of the D&D Fitness Radio Podcast to discuss his approach to life, work, parenting, health and fitness. Although Liev was not an early adopter of a consistent physical fitness regime when he was a young actor, he has been committed to regular intense training over the last 10 years. In addition to a comprehensive strength routine, Liev is dedicated to the sport of boxing and the bumps and bruises that accompany that lifestyle. In 2016, Liev played Chuck Wepner in the film “Chuck,” the real life boxer who fought Muhammad Ali and inspired the “Rocky” movies. He shares some fantastic stories on how he worked closely with the stunt professionals to make fight scenes look as realistic as possible. As Liev describes, "There’s always mishaps.”With Liev’s demanding schedule shooting the critically acclaimed series, “Ray Donovan,” he works hard to fit in his parenting responsibilities along with his personal fitness objectives. Sometimes these two tasks merge when he bicycles to school with them in New York City. As life gets hectic, Liev also values the process and benefits of meditation for recovery and peace of mind. We certainly appreciated him taking the time out of his busy schedule to speak with us and know for certain that you will enjoy listening to our talk with Liev Schreiber, the modern day Renaissance Man.For more information on Live Schreiber, you can watch him on Ray Donovan on Showtime, or follow him via the links below:Showtime Web Site: http://www.sho.com/ray-donovan/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lievschreiber/Twitter: https://twitter.com/LievSchreiber/The D&D Fitness Radio podcast is available at the following locations for downloadable audio, including: iTunes – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/d-d-fitness-radio-podcast/id1331724217https://www.iheart.com/podcast/dd-fitness-radio-28797988/Spreaker.com – https://www.spreaker.com/show/d-and-d-fitness-radios-showYou can reach both Don and Derek at the following locations: Don Saladino: http://www.DonSaladino.com Twitter and Instagram - @DonSaladino YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/donsaladino Derek M. No sparkly vampires here, instead we get Paul Newman, Susan Sarandon, and Gene Hackman in a fun noir thriller. The supporting cast is also formidable: Stockard Channing, James Garner, Reese Witherspoon, Live Schreiber, Giancarlo Esposito, Margo Martindale, John Spencer, and M. Emmet Walsh. Note: This Eric and Drew only episode was recorded in December 2015 and inserted into the calendar this week due to minor illness. It’s also a bite sized ep but hey, sometimes that happens.
