Host Meg Wolitzer presents a program celebrating the 100th anniversary of The New Yorker. One of the magazine's strengths has always been its fiction, and honor of this winning literary streak, this year saw the release of the collection, A Century of Fiction in The New Yorker. The quartet of stories on this show is drawn from that volume. The program includes a pithy satire by E. B. White, “Life Cycle of a Literary Genius,” read by Liev Schreiber; “Love,” by William Maxwell, a tender recounting of an collective adolescent crush, read by Fred Hechinger; “Bullet in the Brain,” a powerful reversal of fortune tale by Tobias Wolff, read by Liev Schreiber; and “All Will be Well,” an intriguing tangle of truths and half-truths by Yiyun Li, read by Ann Harada.

It's been 24 years since “Gladiator” took the world by storm and spawned a whole new era of swords and sandals movies. Will it's sequel “Gladiator II”, our movie for this week, do the same? We shall see. This time the main character is Lucius, who we met as a young boy in the original “Gladiator.” He's the son of Lucilla, and it's revealed in the trailers, the son of Maximus, Russell Crowe's character from “Gladiator.” Lucius suffers a tragedy early in the movie and is made a slave and then rises up as a gladiator for Macrinus, played by Denzel Washington. Macrinus is not all he appears to be and is proven to be power hungry and wants to use Lucius as his instrument for power. Another main character is General Acacius, played by Pedro Pascal, who is the leader of the Roman army who fight for Emperor Geta and Emperor Caracalla, played by Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger respectively. Acacius isn't exactly excited anymore to be dispatched like an errand boy by these emperors to kill people all over the world and conquer lands. Connie Nielsen returns to play Lucilla and as she sees a particular gladiator fight in the Colosseum, she starts to get a feeling that she knows this man. All of these worlds will collide. Sometimes sequels surpass the quality of the original. Does “Gladiator II” accomplish that feat? Check out this episode to find out! “Gladiator II” also stars Derek Jacobi, Yuval Gonen, Rory McCann, Peter Mensah, Matt Lucas, Tim McInnerny, Alexander Karim and Lior Raz. It's finally here! We're talking Christian's most anticipated movie of 2024: Gladiator II. Ridley Scott returns to Rome 24 years after his Best Picture win. This time, Paul Mescal takes the reins as leading man, joined by Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, and Denzel Washington. Much like the original, there are plenty of battles, rousing speeches, and political intrigue to enjoy. But, we don't have Russell Crowe or Joaquin Phoenix. Does the sequel fail to entertain? Or, much like its precursor, will it echo in eternity? Plus, our thoughts on Wicked! What did you think of Gladiator II? Let us know at cinemaontappodcast@gmail.com. Join us in December as we wrap up the year and look ahead to 2025!

"Strength and Honor." It's our Black Friday episode, and we're celebrating Galicked this week and are discussing Ridley Scott's long-awaited Gladiator II. An old-fashioned sword and sandal epic that both the gays and straights can equally enjoy, this might not match the prestige of its Oscar-winning predecessor, but there's a lot of fun going on here. It's nice to see this type of historic blockbuster embrace its gay Ancient Rome roots and lean more into the camp of its material. Get us a fan, because we're verklempt from all of the insanely hot men on display here. We'd risk it all for a night with our boy Paul Mescal, and daddy Pedro Pascal is the type of man we'd have on our bedroom wall growing up. Even though this movie may not exactly pass the Bechdel Test, Connie Nielsen more than makes up for it as the fierce Lucilla. We're also all here for the comeback of queer villains. Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger chew up the scenery as two twink brother Emperors adding some Caligula-level hijinks, complete with a monkey in a dress and a bisexual harem. We discuss the Denzel Washington hinted man on man kiss left on the cutting room floor, some brief thoughts on Wicked, and the iconic Liz Taylor 2001 Golden Globe appearance. Gllaaaaadiator! STRENGTH AND HONOR!The legendary Sir Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) returns to Ancient Rome to direct this long-awaited sequel to his Best Picture-winning, blockbuster smash from twenty four years ago, Gladiator. This continuation takes place around sixteen years later as the legacy of the both Maximus and the late Emperor Marcus Aurelius has seemingly waned. Rome is now even more corrupt with two childish, manic twin emperors (Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger) now running things as the Roman Empire has stretched itself even thinner under the military leadership of General Acacius (Pedro Pascal)....with bloody, increasingly elaborate gladiator games taking place in the Coliseum now as important as ever! And into this brutal arena, A Hero Will Rise. :) His name is Lucius and he's a slave played by acclaimed up-and-coming actor Oscar-nominee Paul Mescal (Aftersun, All of Us Strangers) while the promoter who owns and controls him is Macrinus played by multiple Oscar-winner Denzel Washington. Also still in the mix and returning from the first film is Lucilla played by Connie Nielsen (One Hour Photo, Wonder Woman) who seems to recognize this strapping young fighter who's staking Rome by storm....and what results is another swords-and-sandals epic somewhat similar to the first one, only THIS time featuring....sharks? :P Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

In this episode, Olivia and Emily (much to their dad's chagrin) give their brutally honest takes on Gladiator II expressing their frustrations with the film industry and the lack of originality in sequels, and generally wondering why was this film even made? The sisters dive deep into the character developments, the self plagiarized storytelling and confusing moments that define the film. They also analyze Denzel Washington's mismatched tone and the missed opportunity of underutilizing Connie Nielsen (again!!!), and how this film was basically set up to fail from the start. Although, in the end, Emily and Olivia can say technically it is not a bad film, it was one that left them scratching their heads wondering what was the point…Gladiator II was directed by Ridley Scott, starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington and was theatrically released on November 22, 2024. On today's NYFF62 podcast, director Alex Ross Perry, producer/editor Robert Greene, and members of the band Pavement (Stephen Malkmus, Scott Kannberg, Mark Ibold, Steve West, and Bob Nastanovich) join NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim to discuss Pavements at its North American Premiere. Fueled by a sardonic, tricky sense of humor, Alex Ross Perry's very funny sorta-documentary about the beloved indie rock band integrates archival footage of Pavement at the height of their cult popularity, newly shot material following them during their recent comeback tour in 2022, and a kaleidoscope of semi-scripted contemporary scenes about the shooting of a movie within the movie starring Jason Schwartzman, Fred Hechinger, Nat Wolff, Tim Heidecker, Logan Miller, and a hilarious Joe Keery as an actor seeking awards glory. For today's daily NYFF62 podcast, director RaMell Ross and cast members Ethan Herisse, Brandon Wilson, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Fred Hechinger, and Hamish Linklater join NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim to discuss Nickel Boys, the Opening Night selection of the 62nd New York Film Festival. Nickel Boys screens again on October 3, 5, and 9. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/nyff Rare is the film of a major book that maintains the power and precision of its source material while also generating its own singular aesthetic. Yet RaMell Ross's extraordinary realization of Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize–winning 2019 novel, about two Black teenagers who become wards of a barbaric juvenile reformatory in Jim Crow–era Florida, achieves just this. In breakout performances that cut to the bone, Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson play Elwood and Turner, whose close friendship helps sustain their hope even as the horrors mount around them at the Nickel Academy, which becomes a microcosm of American racism in the mid-20th century. Ross, whose unforgettable Oscar-nominated documentary Hale County This Morning, This Evening (Closing Night of New Directors/New Films, 2018) portrayed an Alabama community in moments of revelatory intimacy, has here fashioned a film of equal daring and intensity, buoyed by expressive, shallow-focus cinematography by Jomo Fray (All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt), pinpoint-precise editing by Nicholas Monsour (NOPE), and deeply felt supporting performances from Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Hamish Linklater, and Daveed Diggs. Inspired by actual events, this harrowing tale comes to vivid life via an ingenious visual approach that brilliantly adapts the novel's exercise in subjectivity. Ross's Nickel Boys sets the beauty of the natural world against the cruel realities of American racism, and confirms its maker's status as a visionary cinematic artist. Thelma Unleashed: June Squibb and Richard Roundtree's Epic Final Ride – A Tale of Grit, Humor, and Defiance at 93, Interview with “Thelma” writer-director Josh Margolin The Not Old Better Show Interview Series Welcome to a special episode of the Not Old Better Show, sponsored by MDHearing and Prolon. where we dive into the poignant action-comedy film that is taking audiences by storm: "Thelma." This feature film directorial debut from our guest today Josh Margolin and showcases the incredible talents of veteran Oscar® nominee June Squibb, in her first leading role, and the legendary Richard Roundtree, in his final performance. "Thelma" is not just a film; it's a celebration of resilience, humor, and the unyielding spirit of the elderly. Thelma opens world wide on June 21 In "Thelma," June Squibb brings to life a feisty 93-year-old grandmother, Thelma Post, who finds herself the victim of a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson, played by Fred Hechinger from "The White Lotus." Refusing to be seen as helpless, Thelma embarks on a treacherous quest across Los Angeles to reclaim her stolen $10,000. Her journey is hilariously action-packed and heartwarming, as she enlists the help of her old friend Ben, portrayed by the iconic Richard Roundtree. Together, they navigate the city on a motorized scooter, facing obstacles that would challenge even the likes of Ethan Hunt from "Mission: Impossible." This film, inspired by a real-life incident involving Margolin's own grandmother, cleverly adapts action tropes to highlight the strength and agency of its elderly protagonist. Margolin's script resonates with infectious humor and a touching narrative, earning rave reviews at this year's Sundance Film Festival for its fresh take on familiar genres and its sensitive portrayal of aging. June Squibb's portrayal of Thelma is nothing short of remarkable. Known for her early career as a dancer and singer, Squibb embraced the physicality of the role, performing most of her own stunts—including high-speed scooter chases and rolling across beds with a gun in hand—all while channeling the fierce determination of her character. Her connection to Thelma's sense of justice is deeply personal, shaped by her lifelong ethos of right and wrong, and her late husband's belief that she could have made an excellent cop. The chemistry between Squibb and Roundtree is palpable, bringing to life a story filled with laughter, grit, and a profound sense of companionship. Margolin's casting choice was driven by Squibb's perfect blend of strength and vulnerability, humor and understatement—qualities that mirror his own grandmother's indomitable spirit. As we explore this extraordinary film, we also ponder the possibilities of a sequel. After all, every great action hero deserves a franchise. Join us as we delve into the making of "Thelma," the remarkable performances of its cast, and the inspiring messages it conveys about aging with dignity and determination.
