EPISODE 76 - “MEMORABLE OSCAR SPEECHES OF THE GOLDEN ERA OF HOLLYWOOD” - 2/24/2025 Winning an Oscar is a dream for most people who work in Hollywood. But you can't just win the Oscar, you have to have a good speech once your name is called and you head to the podium. There have been some great ones — OLIVIA COLEMAN's funny and cheeky speech hit the right tone and who can forget JACK PALANCE's one-arm push-ups or CUBA GOODING's exuberance? There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? As we prepare to celebrate the 97th annual Academy Award ceremony, Steve and Nan look back on some of their favorite Oscar speeches and why they resonate. So put on your tux, don the gown and jewels, pop the champagne, and join us for a fun talk about … well, people talking. The boys are back in town and take the field to watch the 1960 TV special Moochie of Pop Warner Football: From Ticonderoga to Disneyland, directed by William Beaudine and starring Kevin "Moochie" Corcoran as himself... kind of. If you don't know Moochie, stop and go directly back to "Old Yeller" or last year's summer special where he's in little league. If you don't know football, go back to "Gus." We sat down with Alan Hale, president of Consight Marketing Group, to discuss the importance of voice of the customer (VOC) research for B2B companies. Alan is a true expert in the field, and he shared his insights on why customer obsession should be the North star for any business.According to Bain & Company, only 21% of B2B companies identify and act on customer insights. That's a shockingly low number, and it's one of the main reasons why so many businesses fail to succeed in the marketplace. VOC research allows you to make better business decisions, minimize the risk of failure, and differentiate yourself from the competition.Alan breaks down the right way to conduct VOC research, emphasizing the importance of taking an outside-in approach and truly understanding your customers' needs, pain points, and expectations. He also highlights the limitations of relying solely on surveys and why qualitative research is crucial for gaining deeper insights.Tune in and learn:+ The 80/20 rule: Why you should focus on your best customers+The 10-30-90 rule: Continuous customer touchpoints for success+ Practical examples of how VOC research has helped businesses thriveWhether you're a marketer, business owner, or anyone interested in understanding your customers better, this episode is a must-watch. Alan's wealth of knowledge and real-world examples will open your eyes to the power of customer obsession and the potential pitfalls of marketing malpractice.-----------------------------------------------------SUBSCRIBE to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/@theb2bplaybookSUBSCRIBE to our newsletter: https://theb2bplaybook.com/newsletter/GET the latest CONTENT: https://theb2bplaybook.com/-----------------------------------------------------00:00:00 Marketing Malpractice: The Shocking Truth About B2B Companies00:05:10 The Importance of Voice of the Customer (VOC) Research00:10:20 Taking an Outside-In Approach: Putting Customers First00:15:30 The Right Way to Do Voice of the Customer Research00:20:40 Why Surveys Alone Aren't Enough for VOC Research00:25:50 The 80/20 Rule: Focus on Your Best Customers00:31:00 A Practical Example: Helping a Company Enter the U.S. Market00:36:10 The Power of Customer Obsession: Closing the Loop00:41:20 Overcoming Objections: Why VOC Research Is Worth It00:46:30 The Importance of Getting Buy-In from Customers00:51:40 The 10-30-90 Rule: Continuous Customer Touchpoints00:56:50 A Red Flag Example: Saving a Major Account01:02:00 Key Takeaways: Customer Obsession Is the Path to Success-----------------------------------------------------
In “It's A Wonderful Life,” BEULAH BONDI played the most loving mother to JAMES STEWART. Ma Bailey is the epitome of sweetness, kindness, and supportiveness so it's quite shocking when we meet the Ma Bailey who would have existed had George Bailey not been born. She's cold, bitter, and unkind. It gives Bondi the wonderful opportunity to play two versions of the same character, which she does flawlessly. So to celebrate Mother's Day, Nan and Steve are taking a page from Bondi's playbook as they discuss the good and bad mothers of classic cinema. "The years hadn't softened Moronie. He continued to murder the English language, and anyone who got in his way. " 1982 may be The Year of Living Dangerously, but 1984 is most definitely the year of living Johnny Dangerously! This movie inhabits a special place in the realms of comedy, parody classics of the '80s. And the creative license taken on curse words has lived a quiet life of infamy in small groups of immature males for the last 39 years. Here's a roll call of how deep the cast runs. Michael Keaton, Joe Piscopo, Danny Devito, Marilu Henner, Maureen Stapleton, Peter Boyle, Griffin Dunne, Dom DeLuise, Glenno so Connor, Ray Walston, Alan Hale junior, Dick Butkus , Jack Nance, Bob Eubanks, Taylor Negron, and Joe Flaherty. You'll have to trust me that there are many more after reading that aggravatingly long list. Had to slip an adverb in here somehow.

Everyone knows about “Doctor Google”. Worst. Doctor. EVER.Anxious people tend to run directly to Google so they can verify that anxiety symptoms are not dangerous and that scary thoughts will not come true. Invariably, anxious people will also bemoan the choice to ask Doctor Google because no good ever comes from it.Why does asking Google seem like such a good idea … then such a bad idea after the fact?Google is driven not by accuracy or veracity, but by popularity. The Google algorithm has certainly gotten smarter over the years, but it still rewards sites that are visited most often. That means that when you search for something on Google, the results you see will generally reflect the sites that are most visited in response to the search term you enter. Google will generally show you what it thinks makes most sense because lots of other people have clicked on those links. When it comes to health issues - including mental health issues - people will most often use Google when trying to find safety from the worst case scenario. This means they will click on the worst case scenarios to see if they apply for them. This means that Google thinks that the worst case scenarios are the best links to show people since they are the most clicked on. So when you ask Google if your racing heart might kill you, you are going to get a bunch of links that paint a really scary picture, leading you to conclude that you are doomed. The natural bias toward the negative means that Google thinks it’s giving you the best results, but it’s just giving you the most popular, and also the scariest results. Add your anxious mind and it’s compromised reasoning and critical thinking skills, and you can see why Google goes from great idea to terrible idea in short order. What can we do about this? Part of recovery is learning to stop frantically seeking reassurance all the time, so that is certainly part of the solution. But being educated and well-informed about the nature of disordered anxiety and recovery is a good thing, so not all searching and researching is a bad thing! Start by NOT starting with Google, or any other major search engine. They’re great when you want to find out who played the Skipper on Gilligan’s Island but they are TERRIBLE mental health tools. Instead, if you’re going to do research, start with some more focused sites that are driven by veracity and accuracy in the space. Here are a few:Verywell Mind Simply PsychologyInternational OCD FoundationAnxiety And Depression Association of AmericaPsych CentralWhy go direct to sites like this? Because these sites are going to give you a more accurate view into the nature of anxiety disorders and recovery. They are not about click bait or sensationalism. They tend to be slanted toward education about the nuts and bolts of anxiety and treatment. Not everything you read on these sites will make you feel good, but you are far less likely to be dragged into the trap of catastrophic thinking if you make use of well written and focused sites like these. This is by no means an exhaustive list of good mental health websites, but its a start. I’ll do my best to pass on good resources when I have them for you. For now, just remember that Googling to feel safe isn’t a good plan, but if you must search, skip the usual visit to Doctor Google. She’ll always leave you wishing you hadn’t asked. By the way, Alan Hale, Jr. played the Skipper. Alan Hale makes a teenage escape from Launceston when he gets work at Taronga Zoo in Sydney. It's the mid 1960s and Taronga's chief benefactor, Sir Edward Hallstrom, is pouring much of his fortune into acquiring new and exotic animals to add to zoo's collection. Alan is apprenticed to the Head Keeper for monkeys and he's charged with cleaning out the cages each morning. He loves the zoo and his job, until he's outwitted by a family of thirty macaque monkeys who disappear over the zoo's walls and into the suburbs of Sydney.

Will our second entry in the "child of Robin Hood" sub-genre actually explore the protagonist's relationship with his parents? Will his mother get even the slightest mention? Don't count on it! But you can expect some historically-inspired court politics and Alan Hale's third performance as Little John in the final film of his career. -with Richard Hopkins-Lutz and Andy FixInto the Greenwood is produced by Thaddeus Papke Theme music is by Plastic3For more from Into the Greenwood:https://www.instagram.com/intogreenwood/https://twitter.com/intogreenwoodhttps://www.facebook.com/intogreenwoodTo support the podcast go to:https://www.patreon.com/IntoGreenwoodorhttps://ko-fi.com/intogreenwoodOur selected charity: Trees, Water & Peopleintogreenwood@gmail.com

Alan Hale, Jr., best remembered for playing the Skipper on "Gilligan's Island", plays the farmer so Aaron and Chris take a trip to Gilligan's Island with the president of the fan club.
Today is the 100th birthday of the Skipper from Gilligan's Island: Alan Hale Jr. He was a film and theatre actor before landing that role, whole full careers of both. The most interesting facts I discovered while researching him is that I had no idea the number of Gilligan's Island specials and movies after the series was over. That and he had is own seafood restaurant and travel agency afterward. Brilliant. The world is a better place because he was in it and still feels the loss that he has left. Abbott and Costello were an American comedy duo composed of comedians Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, whose work on radio and in film and television made them the most popular comedy team of the 1940s and early 1950s and the highest-paid entertainers in the world during World War II. Their patter routine "Who's on First?" is one of the best-known comedy routines of all time. Their popularity waned in the early 1950s due to overexposure and their film and television contracts lapsed. The partnership ended soon afterwards. The team's first known radio broadcast was on The Kate Smith Hour on February 3, 1938. At first, the similarities between their voices made it difficult for radio listeners (as opposed to stage audiences) to tell them apart during their rapid-fire repartee. As a result, Costello affected a high-pitched, childish voice. "Who's on First?" was first performed for a national radio audience the following month. They performed on the program as regulars for two years, while also landing roles in a Broadway revue, The Streets of Paris, in 1939. Abbott and Costello on radio (note Abbott without toupee normally worn in films) After debuting their own program, The Abbott and Costello Show, as Fred Allen's summer replacement in 1940, Abbott and Costello joined Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy on The Chase and Sanborn Hour in 1941. Two of their films (Buck Privates and Hold That Ghost) were adapted for Lux Radio Theater that year. Their program returned in its own weekly time slot starting on October 8, 1942 and Camel cigarettes as sponsor. The Abbott and Costello Show mixed comedy with musical interludes (by vocalists such as Connie Haines, Ashley Eustis, the Delta Rhythm Boys, Skinnay Ennis, Marilyn Maxwell and the Les Baxter Singers). Regulars and semi-regulars on the show included Artie Auerbach ("Mr. Kitzel"), Elvia Allman, Iris Adrian, Mel Blanc, Wally Brown, Sharon Douglas, Verna Felton, Sidney Fields, Frank Nelson, Martha Wentworth and Benay Venuta. Ken Niles was the show's longtime announcer, doubling as an exasperated foil to Costello, who routinely insulted his on-air wife (played by Elvia Allman). Niles was succeeded by Michael Roy, alternating over the years with Frank Bingman and Jim Doyle. The show went through several orchestras, including those of Ennis, Charles Hoff, Matty Matlock, Matty Malneck, Jack Meakin, Will Osborne, Fred Rich, Leith Stevens and Peter van Steeden. The show's writers included Howard Harris, Hal Fimberg, Parke Levy, Don Prindle, Eddie Cherkose (later known as Eddie Maxwell), Leonard B. Stern, Martin Ragaway, Paul Conlan and Eddie Forman, as well as producer Martin Gosch. Sound effects were handled primarily by Floyd Caton. Guest stars included Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, The Andrews Sisters and Lucille Ball. In 1947 the show moved to ABC (the former NBC Blue Network). During their time on ABC the duo also hosted a 30-minute children's radio program (The Abbott and Costello Children's Show) on Saturday mornings. The program featured child vocalist Anna Mae Slaughter and child announcer Johnny McGovern. It finished its run in 1949.

Tasmanian Errol Flynn had already proven himself a solid action star for Warner Bros. in films like Captain Blood, so when the dealings with James Cagney to play Robin Hood fell through, Flynn seemed like a logical choice. And it's lucky for all of us that things went this way because Flynn created one of the most iconic portrayals of Robin Hood that has graced the silver screen. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Robin Hood series to talk about Michael Curtiz's and William Keighley's 1938 film The Adventures of Robin Hood. We talk about the differences in the myths and portrayals of the title character between this and the Douglas Fairbanks version, and how these differences affect our opinion of the film. We look at Errol Flynn and how effective he is as the titular character. We chat about the rest of the cast that stands out to us – Olivia de Havilland, Alan Hale, Claude Rains, and Basil Rathbone. We discuss the stunt work – both archery and swordplay – and how it all came together to make for incredibly effective action sequences. And we touched on the fabulous use of technicolor. It's a wonderful and thrilling film that's well worth checking out. It holds up as a central figure in the modern Robin Hood myths. We have a great time chatting about it. Check it out then tune in!
