Chris and Robbie were out on the road when they spoke to a man with an incredible story that is far from finished. He went from humble beginnings in the Indian village of Gopiganj in Uttar Pradesh, to a professional MLB contract and international fame via reality TV - as if that wasn't enough he is now on the NXT roster with the WWE. His ambition is even bigger than his sizeable frame and his conversation with Robbie and Chris was one of the best we've had on Off Script. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Producer Mark Ciardi should be the subject of his own much-beloved movies. He's been a Major League pitcher, a European model and a go-to producer for all things sports. After spending years in the minor league, in places like Beloit, Wis., El Paso and Stockton, California, Mark was called up by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1987. After lasting for a cup of cocoa in the Major Leagues, he became a model, working the runways of Paris and Milan for seven years. After that chapter, he became a Hollywood producer, bringing us “The Rookie,” “Invincible” “Secretariat” and “Million Dollar Arm.” And now he's working on the Kurt Warner story – but I think he should be working on his own!

Over the course of his 30 year career, Aasif Mandvi has learned that the dreaded phrase, “Jack of all trades, master of none,” is nothing more than a myth. As an actor, writer, producer, podcast host and much more, Aasif has no shortage of creative endeavors and has learned to embrace that multiplicity rather than fight it. Born in Mumbai, India, Aasif moved with his family to the U.K. and grew up in north England. His creativity was evident from a young age, from drawing to writing poetry to even performing a radio play as encouraged by his parents. Joining a children's theater company, Aasif describes how acting served as an escape for him and how the “no pressure” attitude from his parents gave way to a sense of freedom in his acting with no expectations attached. After moving to America, Aasif studied drama in both high school and college and immediately secured a job with Disney. Upon moving to New York, Aasif felt that the lack of representation in the media left him without a career roadmap to follow from other actors that looked like him. While studying his craft, Aasif began to explore other ways he could get seen within the industry and wrote a one-man-show titled, “Sakina's Restaurant” which was the first story of a south Asian immigrant family to be performed in New York City's theater scene in Times Square. You've seen him in hit films and television series such as CBS' “Evil,” “This Way Up,” “Million Dollar Arm,” “Blue Bloods,” “The Last Airbender,” CBS' “Jericho,” “The Internship,” “The Proposal,” and a fan favorite correspondent on “The Daily Show” with John Stewart. Today, Aasif opens up about his character-building process. He shares with listeners how to work with material that you may be struggling to connect with, and reveals how he navigated the decision to stick with telling his own story early on, even when other opportunities began to present themselves. These are the unforgettable stories that landed Aasif Mandvi right here. "You can see the stuff 'Million Dollar Arm' throws at you from miles away, but that doesn't stop this baseball movie from being genially enjoyable." Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times goes for the obvious BALLS analogy... which we would never do. In particular when talking about Jon Hamm or Lake Bell. No... we would never do that. Wouldn't even cross our deviant minds. THANKFULLY we have a guest to get us back on the subject of balls of the sporting kind with Web Bist of TRILOGY IN THEORY. Re-posting our conversation with J.B. Bernstein, President and CEO of athlete management firm, Access Group, and CMO of sports marketing and athlete representation company, Seven Figures Management. His insane work ethic and incredible drive has led him to become one of the most respected marketing experts in the world of sports today. At a time when his sports agency company was on the verge of collapse, J.B. took a leap of faith, entering completely uncharted waters to find the world's next Yao Ming. He decided to host a baseball competition in of all places India, at a time when baseball was nearly unheard of in that part of the world. The competition attracted over 35,000 contestants, which eventually sprung into a groundbreaking opportunity to sign two of the first ever Indian pro-league baseball players, Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel to the Major Leagues. The story got on Disney's radar and was turned into a heart-warming biographical film, Million Dollar Arm, where J.B. was portrayed by Emmy Award winning actor, Jon Hamm.

In our shortest episode of the year, I take a minute to dissect the way gigantic things are being portrayed on screen and to consider how Godzilla is like the most recent doomsday climate change report. Plus, Jack interviews the legendary Bill Paxton who plays a pitching coach in Million Dollar Arm. They get philosophical about acting just above a whisper and going calmly over the top. Fortunately, the lurking Predator decides not to attack them in the process.
"Million Dollar Arm" producer Mark Ciardi tells Schrager the story behind the story of Disney's latest sports movie, as well as his own life story of going from professional baseball player to Hollywood producer.
In this week's Movie Date podcast, Rafer and Kristen look at the theme of immigration on film through three of this week's big releases. "The Immigrant" follows the story of a Polish woman (Marion Cotillard) who falls victim to an unscrupulous man (Joaquin Phoenix) shortly after arriving at Ellis Island at the turn of the twentieth century. "Godzilla" tells the story of a monster who leaves his home off the coast of Japan to spend some time in Hawaii and California. And "Million Dollar Arm" follows a sports agent (John Hamm) who recruits two young men from India (Siraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal) to play baseball in the U.S. Based on a true story, "Million Dollar Arm" is produced by a real former baseball player, Mark Ciardi. Ciardi sits down with Kristen and Rafer, and reveals some fun facts about how the movie was made, and how much about the characters is true. A very special thanks to Jay Cowit, who performed and wrote music on this week's podcast.
