In “It's A Wonderful Life,” BEULAH BONDI played the most loving mother to JAMES STEWART. Ma Bailey is the epitome of sweetness, kindness, and supportiveness so it's quite shocking when we meet the Ma Bailey who would have existed had George Bailey not been born. She's cold, bitter, and unkind. It gives Bondi the wonderful opportunity to play two versions of the same character, which she does flawlessly. So to celebrate Mother's Day, Nan and Steve are taking a page from Bondi's playbook as they discuss the good and bad mothers of classic cinema.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Moms in the Movies (2014), by Richard Corliss; Actresses of a Certain Character (2007), by Axel Nissen; Irene Dunne: First Lady of Hollywood (2006), by Wes D. Arts and Entertainment: Rancho Cordova is known as the "City of Events" and houses one of the best Art Complex in our region The MACC. The City has its own orchestra, Symphony D'oro, a Swing Dance Band, a Black Box Theatre, and features one of the largest July 4th fireworks displays in the region, and a whole slate of large outdoor events. Every month Director/ Curator of The MACC, Cheryl Gleason speaks to visual artists, musicians, actors, theatre groups as well as other notable influencers in the art scene in the Sacramento Region. It is not uncommon to hear people marvel at the explosion of the arts in Rancho Cordova, and for good reason. Where ever you go in our city, you are likely to experience a bit of art – whether painted on the side of a utility box, as music heard wafting through a grocery store or enjoyed during a casual wander through the Mills Station Arts and Culture Center.  It's true that the arts have continued to grow in Rancho Cordova in so many ways that it is easy to forget that it has been only 10 years since this spark was ignited, and how the wonderful Marsha Mason has guided it to success.  Marsha brought a background as a landscape architect with experience running large programs in the public sector to Rancho Cordova's newborn arts movement back in 2012. She was CEO of Sites Pacific, Inc., a landscape architectural firm specializing in public works projects and visual impact assessments. She taught landscape architecture courses as a lecturer at U.C. Davis. Marsha served as President of the Sierra Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, was a founder of WalkSacramento.  Those skills all come together in 2012 as Marsha joined a small group of local artists to work with the Cordova Community Council to form what has become known as “Rancho Cordova Arts.” That year, the first City Hall exhibit launched with a fine art exhibit of local artists aptly named “Genesis.”  Most artists are content – and prefer -- to simply work on their art, but Marsha is not like most artists. Understanding the importance of having an organization of people committed to an artistic future, she rolled up her sleeves to accomplish less glamourous foundational tasks like creating a non-profit organization, developing a website, creating a newsletter and focusing artistic energy in the community to produce memorable art events.

What if we had a Patreon? That's what we're exploring this week as we continue to stand in solidarity with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. In lieu of a new actor interview we're book clubbing 1979's Norma Rae starring Sally Field, Beau Bridges, and Ron Leibman. Norma Rae is inspired by the real story of mill workers unionizing in rural North Carolina. We get into all the important parts: Ron Leibman being hot, Burt Reynolds advising Sally not to do the film, and the beautiful appearance of legendary character actress Grace Zabriskie in a small role. The film is a small quiet human story about the importance of labor unions and it felt like the right time to correct our blindspot and screen it. Also discussed this episode: the Debra Winger-Barbra Hershey led film A Dangerous Woman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Mandy Patinkin vs. Toni Collette. Hi 70's movie fans, today we gots 9 reviews for you. Can't wait to compare notes with you rad cinephiles. I do need to get this done quick. I've put it off and I need to go to work. Swigs espresso……… Let's go!!!! First off we have James Mason in Sidney Lumet's (Child's play 1972) Who would ever think that dark shit is goin on in a boys boarding school. Next we get great music and a cocaine slide show in (Super fly 1972). Next. Oh look y'all Ron O'Neil and Sheila Frazier are back in, oops, first we review (Detroit 9000 1973) Alex Rocco and rad Vonetta McGee Star in this gritty possibly PR for the police state film. Ok now it's (Super fly TNT1973) and Benson from the hit show Benson is in this sequel also Box from Logan's run. Also also, revolution! Moving on to (The grass is always greener over the septic tank 1978) Carol Burnett and Erma Bombeck! I loved diving into our dvd of this rare made for tv 70's treat. Coach is here in this as well. Moving onto (Bear island 1979). Based on a popular novel of that year. Here we have many great actors dealing with the pressures of ecology, explosions, snow, and nazi's. Ok next is the recently lost great actor James Caan, teaming again with Marsha Mason in (Chapter 2 1979) Rhoda is here too, so what can go wrong. Almost done, and, oh look I finally scored a copy of (Dreamer 1979). Here is a bowling movie that is really got a lot of bowling in it. The cover of this movie has Jack Warden drawn as a man living out his days happily inside of a bowling pin. Poster made me smile so much I had to buy it. Dreamer is actually the main characters name. He is fiercely dedicated to being great at bowling, and is played by the guy from the Star tours ride at EPCOT. Finally chums today we end our reviews today with another Carol Burnett made for TV movie called (The 10th month 1979) She's very serious in this one. Both of these tv movies are written by women and really get on film some outdated medieval treatment of women, the exposure and eradication of which were long overdue. Still long to go but after watching both of these I gotta say that the great Carol got even greater. It's a different day now but the coffee's finished and so am I. Thanks for listening, please spread the word. If you need any help acquiring any of these films, drop us a line and we'll help you out.

Best Actress

The year is 1982 and the nominees are: 1. Katharine Hepburn - On Golden Pond 2. Susan Sarandon - Atlantic City 3. Marsha Mason - Only When I Laugh 4. Diane Keaton - Reds 5. Meryl Streep - The French Lieutenant's Woman - In 1982 Katharine Hepburn became the first (and still only) actor to have 4 Academy Awards for a performance by an actor in a lead role. As Ethel in On Golden Pond she plays the wife/mother of the Fondas (Henry and Jane) in an emotional driven story about family and relationships, new and old. Hepburn was not present for the ceremony to receive her Oscar (as was her style) though neither was Henry Fonda or Sir John Gielgud (who won Supporting for Arthur). Susan Sarandon became a first time nominee in Atlantic City in a gritty gangster drama playing opposite Burt Lancaster. Marsha Mason became a four time nominee (still no wins) for Only When I Laugh playing a Broadway actress returning home from rehab. Meryl Streep received her first Best Actress in a leading role nomination for The French Lieutenant's Woman, a role which she describes as her least favourite (but it's still pretty impressive). Finally Diane Keaton plays Louise Bryant in Reds demonstrating her range and proving she can handle a historic drama. Very interesting year! Who do you think should have won? Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Glenn Sumi as they discuss.
