While Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass might be dated now, it was certainly controversial 15 years ago. It's jammed with violence and bad language...and many of those naughty words come out of the mouth of an 11-year-old girl. But it's also a story about a young nobody who becomes a star on social media and goes on to save his city from very bad guy. Take away that he DOES become a superhero and this movie IS our current culture. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays the title character and he's about as average as he always is, but Chloe Grace Moretz is fantastic as the merciless Hit-Girl. And while Kick-Ass' Big Bad, Mark Strong, is just okay and Christopher Mintz-Plasse is nothing special as Kick-Ass' friend/foil, Nicolas Cage has a phenomenal time playing Moretz's vengeful dad. And even though Vaughn's adaption of the comic book is colourful and often fun as it explores the theme of "what if a regular kid tried to be a superhero", it doesn't really deliver on that promise. CHRISTOPHER LAWRENCE (Costume Designer) drew inspiration for his design career while putting together looks for he and his dance partner on the beloved “American Bandstand.” He then started working at the trendy boutique Camp Beverly Hills where he began cultivating a clientele of actors, directors and, most importantly, Costume Designers. Christopher caught his first break in the wardrobe department on two iconic television series, “Moonlighting” and “Pee Wee's Playhouse.” He then decided that designing feature films was his true passion, and he quickly developed relationships with some of the world's most celebrated Designers such as Ellen Mirojnick and Albert Wolsky. Before he knew it, Christopher had created his path in features, working on such films as “City Slickers,” “Beaches” and “Bugsy,” the latter of which garnered the Academy Award® for Best Costume Design. Christopher came up through the ranks in the wardrobe department and quickly became one of the industry's top Costume Supervisors. In 1999, Michael Mann recognized Christopher's talent and promoted him to Associate Costume Designer on “The Insider” (Al Pacino, Russell Crowe), and Christopher has been designing films ever since. Some of the credits that followed were “The Anniversary Party” (Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Kline), “Showtime” (Robert De Niro, Eddie Murphy) and “S.W.A.T.” (Colin Farrell, Samuel L. Jackson). Christopher has become a favorite of Jason Statham, having designed “The Mechanic,” “Cellular” and “Crank” and is a longtime collaborator with film director Simon West, most notably on the Capital One “What's In Your Wallet?” Viking campaign, which won the Costume Designers Guild Award - Best Commercial Costume Design. Christopher teamed up yet again with Michael Mann on two additional projects, including the feature film “Texas Killing Fields” (starring Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain and Chloe Grace Moretz). Christopher served as costume designer on the Jennifer Aniston film, “Management,” and from sketch to fabric he designed all of Miley Cyrus' Hannah Montana costumes for “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” from which dolls, Halloween costumes and sportswear were created for the tween market. “The Space Between Us” reunites Christopher with director Peter Chelsom who directed the Hannah Montana movie. Christopher was the costume designer for the first three seasons of the popular Showtime series “Ray Donovan,” for which he was twice nominated for a Costume Designers Guild award. It was his fifth nomination, having won twice for his commercial work. Recently, he was the Costume Designer for Bill Burr's OLD DADS.

SHADOW IN THE CLOUD from 2020 is part claustrophobic radio play, part creature-feature, part war movie, and part absolutely bananas-bonkers action fantasy. Chloe Grace-Moretz stars as a WWII gunner who boards a plane under top secret orders with some top secret cargo, only to discover mid-flight that the plane is under attack from a malevolent creature. We're joined this week by Vera Goudie, Jess Fischli, and Jocee Worley for a very lively debate about the film's merit, its message, and its manic, absurdist energy. Our individual opinions vary wildly on this film, but also guide us into a thoughtful reflection on the spectrum of perspectives in all walks of life, and provides a fascinating opportunity to make room for approaches and responses that differ greatly from our own. Also featuring a Patron-Only Whatcha segment, we hope you enjoy hearing this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it.Patron Only Segment: Whatcha Watchin' / Readin' / Listenin' To?4:42 - SHADOW IN THE CLOUDPlease note -- this conversation features a good bit of salty language. So... you think you can remake a classic horror movie. That's what Michael Bay thought, anyway, when his production shingle Platinum Dunes embarked on a new adaptation of Jay Anson's tale of mayhem on Long Island. Citizen Kane the 1979 Amityville Horror may not be, but it holds a special place in the hearts of horror fans worldwide. So who's to blame for the mess that is the 2005 version? First (and last) time director Andrew Douglas? Frequently shirtless Ryan Reynolds, miscast as axe-wielding George Lutz? Or screenwriter Scott Kosar, who picks up a surprise nomination this week for the Michael Myers Award? Remember a time...a time before the intense superhero fatigue of the 2020's kicked in, where the idea of a non-IP semi-satire of pre-mature MCU films was a fresh idea. If you're thinking of 2010's Kick-Ass then congratulations...you win nothing! This film by Matthew Vaughn features a creative premise, Nicholas Cage overacting, kids cursing and committing murder, and some seriously questionable story beats. We also get into Le Finn Du Monde being the greatest beer ever, and the time capsule that is Ohio's Jungle Jims International food market. It stars - Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Nicholas Cage, Mark Strong, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Lyndsy Fonseca, Clark Duke, and Evan Peters.

Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

January's theme is “PORTRAITS OF THE ARTISTS” where we analyze the works of two major black leading men and a lot of this month is devoted to DENZEL WASHINGTON. Today's discussion is a bit of casting and franchising genius as Denzel gets to essentially be a superhero without the costume and green screen. Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington plucked a deep cut TV series and turned it into a box office action success. This one is for the grandads who imagine themselves being badass in a Home Depot. Bob has a mysterious past, a built in detective mode in his mind and he made friends with a sex-trafficked Chloe Grace Moretz so, of course, he has to kill a bunch of people. Russians in particular. We're talking about THE EQUALIZER from 2014 and now they're on the third one. The things he can do with a nail gun and a shot glass are a trip. Denzel pulls out “franchise action star” later in his career and it's pretty impressive even if some of the story feels a wee bit overbaked. This is week my guest is Desiree Akhavan!  Desiree's first feature film was 2014's APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR, in which she also starred. It came off the back of a web series she made in 2010 called The Slope, with fellow NYU postgrad film student Ingrid Jungermann. After Appropriate Behaviour, Desiree had a guest spot on the TV show Girls, and also began adapting the book THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST, alongside her co-writer and producer Cecilia Frugiuele. The film, which Desiree also directed, would star Chloe Grace Moretz and Sasha Lane and went on to win the Sundance Dramatic Grand Jury Prize in 2018.  Around the same time, Desiree also created, wrote and directed a brilliant 6-part TV show for Channel 4 called THE BISEXUAL, starring Maxine Peake, Brian Gleeson, Naomi Ackie and Desiree herself and all set in London.  Since 2018 Desiree has been working on a very personal project which we talk about, as well directing episodes of many brilliant TV shows, including RAMY, HACKS and TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS.  We talk about a lot, and if you've ever read an interview with Desiree you know she's very good at cutting through the bullshit and this is no exception. We dig into how the past five years have seen her working at a different pace and why that is, we talk about the moments after success and the expectations that were placed on her career, we talk about what it actually means or requires to direct an episode of TV, finding a soulmate in her creative partner Cecilia and why learning and having fun is at the centre of everything she does…

Hugo was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and took home five wins, but it wasn't enough to save it from losing more than $100 million during its box office run. As a bonus, Troy and Brad share their top three Scorsese films and talk about the relevancy of the academy award ceremony.Timestamps: Intro - (2:10), Academy Awards Talk - (5:40), Box Office Results and Critical Response - (16:07), Behind the Camera - (23:45), In Front of the Camera - (37:43), Production, Development and Historical Accuracies - (48:13), Commerical Break - (53:19), Hugo Discussion - (55:19), Is it a Bomb? - (90:32), Listener Feedback - (91:32), and Outro - (102:44)Hugo is directed by Martin Scorsese and stars Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, Emily Mortimer, and Jude Law.
