It's difficult to summarize Joanna Gaines' job description in one word. Together with her husband Chip Gaines, she opened a home goods shop, Magnolia Market, in the early 2000s—but it wasn't until the two of them ended up on TV a decade later that Joanna became a star. Since then, she's built an empire, ranging from product lines to a TV network to a retail and hospitality compound in Waco Texas. Along the way, she's been everything from designer to baker to shopkeeper to entrepreneur. On this episode of the podcast she speaks with host Dennis Scully about relying on intuition and faith to make business decisions, why she's returning to TV with a new show, and how going from a “no” person to a “why not” person changed everything. Our extended family (40+ people) just got back from spending a week in San Antonio, Texas. The Texas hill country is a beautiful place to visit almost any time of year, but it's especially gorgeous when it's all lit up and decorated for Christmas. Today, I'm sharing all the fun and budget-friendly things we did while we were there, and giving tips for finding similar bargains in your neck of the woods. Show Notes SCRIPTURES CITED: I didn't quote a single Bible verse in this week's episode, but our family's theme verse certainly fits: "Whether then you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31) That goal should hold in public and private, at home and abroad, in our dealings with each other, with hotel clerks and waitresses and park rangers and valet attendants and cashiers and cleaning ladies and museum docents and fellow travelers. We want to treat everyone we come into contact with in a way that honors and glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ -- at Christmas time, especially! ***SPOILERS*** Well, the girls went to the movie theater to see Harry Styles eat Florence Pugh (yes, in that way). But what they left with was the feeling that they'd just been on a giant shrooms trip to the 1950s. This episode is their raw dog review on Don't Worry Darling. Olivia Wilde was giving misogyny but make it hot, but make it a thriller, but make it a mind fuck. The girls question the ethics of virtual reality, make the comparison of Waco TX's Magnolia Market to the Victory Project, and talk Joanna Gains as the cult leader of modernity. Hannah says “[Don't Worry Darling] was her superbowl” and also Hannah says it “gets you so horny and gets you so thinking [about the world].” It's hot to be Harry's little side piece, unless its against your own will. Watch the movie, then listen.
This episode features an interview with Warren Shoulberg, award-winning journalist and consultant for the retailing and home furnishings industries. He is a regular contributor to The Robin Report, Forbes.com, The Business of Home, and his own blog, Stupidbusiness.com.On this episode, Warren gives us his take on a wide range of contemporary retail issues, including technological innovation and supply-chain backlog, and shares why he dislikes the terms “brick-and-mortar,” “omnichannel,” and “upholstery.”3 Takeaways:Get out there. Talk to your customers, go into your stores to ensure they are executing on a local level, and keep your nose to the grindstone. On the supply side, technology is not going to save the day in industries that are labor-intensive. Retailers must understand where their competitive levers lie and the distinctiveness of their businesses. While some retail buzzwords get low marks from Warren, here is one that doesn't: “retail-as-campus.” The immersive, experiential concept is presenting a different way to engage shoppers. Multiple structures offer retail, dining, and even lodging in an experience that cannot be replicated online.Key Quotes:“That's why I like the retail business: because you can just see with your own eyes what's going on, and they can't fool you.”“Any time I run into an independent retailer who says, ‘I can't do E-commerce,' I say, ‘You're crazy, because you're willing to write off 30% of the potential market.'”“You've got to go out and see the stores. If you don't - if you're just sitting on your computer or your phone all day - you're going to miss a lot of stuff.”--This podcast is presented by Dell Technologies and Intel. Together they help you realize digital transformation across retail by driving IT innovation to better engage with today's connected consumer. Carla Pendergraft is originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has a B.A. degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and has a master’s degree in business from Texas State University. Since 1990, she has worked for the Waco Convention Center and Waco Convention & Visitors Bureau, first in the convention sales area and for the last 4 years, as Director of Marketing. Carla is the proud grandmother of Aviana, who is 8 years old, and Rosie, 2 years. In this episode of Destination on the Left, Carla Pendergraft, the Director of Marketing for the Waco Convention and Visitors Bureau, discusses the growth of tourism in Waco, Texas. She walks us through the introduction of tons of new attractions like Magnolia Market at the Silos, and she explains the impact that television shows like Fixer Upper have made on Waco’s community and brand. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Carla’s journey into the travel and tourism industry What Carla has done to help Waco stand out from the crowd How Waco overcame its negative image and increased tourism How the Waco brand has changed over the last thirty years The main drivers of tourism for Waco and how Carla has leveraged them How CVBs can do their job while serving the locals How destination marketers are playing a role in local support instead of just tourism alone Waco Convention and Visitors Bureau Carla Pendergraft is the Director of Marketing for the Waco Convention and Visitors Bureau in Waco, Texas. Since 1990, Carla has developed a broad perspective on the success of her community and the Waco brand. She was there for the Waco Siege of the Branch Davidians compound and witnessed the rebound of the Waco brand after the smoke cleared. There is a lot to be said about a community’s willingness to band together and thrive, especially in times like these. That is why Waco continues to stand out after years with Carla at the helm. In this episode, we talk about the success of the Waco brand and how it has changed throughout Carla’s carer. We also discuss the significant impact Magnolia Market at the Silos and Fixer Upper has made on the growth of tourism in Waco. An Uphill Battle Carla fell into the CVB world by accident, but she has been there for thirty years now without having the same job once. There are certainly some glamorous elements to the job, but for the most part, it is all about getting in the trenches and figuring out how to make your destination stand out. Because of Waco’s history, standing out was never the problem. It created an uphill battle for destination marketers like Carla who were tasked with shedding Waco’s negative image. Texans have always known Waco well, but people across the world determine the appeal of smaller destinations in one or two thoughts—if they are negative, it is a lot harder to market the destination. Putting Waco on the Map As time went on, the Waco community began to develop organically. Baylor was always a major driver of tourism and as the school grew, so did the travel market. Waco became home to many new attractions like the Waco Mammoth National Monument, the Texas Rangers Museum, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and it is the birthplace of Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Fixer Upper on HGTV. Everyone in Waco has a story about how the television show impacted their life. It completely changed the public perception of Waco and made the CVB’s job so much easier. Instead of fighting a negative image, they could focus on using creativity to grow. There is always a way to cut through the noise with creativity and collaboration, and Waco is a testament to that. Welcome Lisa-Jo Baker to the Thriving Beyond Belief podcast today! Do you ever wonder how you woke up one day with all the responsibilities of a grown-up who secretly enjoys buying groceries in bulk, can no longer recognize the tween celebrities on the magazines at checkout, but is still surprised when a Starbucks barista calls you “ma’am”—because your inside self is frozen in time to about twenty years ago? So does Lisa-Jo Baker. In these intimate reflections on midlife, Lisa-Jo invites us to get a good look at our middles and gives us permission to embrace them—beyond what the media, the mirror, or the magazines say. Through gutsy, beautiful storytelling, she admits out loud what most of us are thinking about marriage, parenting, the bathroom scale, and how badly we all want to buy those matching Magnolia Market mugs. Her delicious stories come from not being afraid of who she is, because Lisa-Jo knows that the middle might be the best part of the love story of life, kids, faith, doubt, marriage, failure, wonder, and the muffin top—and that these are all good things. She’s not asking you to seize the day, just to make sure you actually see it for all its wildly ordinary glory. Welcome to the middle!

Maybe when you think of Waco Texas you think of the standoff at the Branch Davidian compound the 1990s. Well, there's a new compound in Waco that's getting all the attention now: The Magnolia Market at the Silos, a fortress of a different kind buit by HGTV design stars Chip and Joanna Gaines. Long a staple hotel room cable viewing for Dan and Janice and the family, they took advantage of a late checkout at the campground to go visit this place and, listener, it was bananas. It's hard to explain, but basically it's a theme park for upscale rustic living. And it attracts 50,000 people a week. Plus us. Everyone knows and loves whatever Chip and Joanna Gaines does. Whether it's their HGTV show, Fixer Upper, or one of their many projects coming from Magnolia Home; it's impossible to find anyone who doesn't love this sweet pair! Today's episode, we discuss our August Book Club book, Capital Gaines, written by Chip Gaines himself! About Chip Gaines Chip, along with his wife, Joanna, are co-founders of Magnolia Homes, Magnolia Market, and Magnolia Realty in Waco, Texas. Chip was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and raised in Dallas, Texas. He graduated from Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business with a degree in marketing. Chip is an entrepreneur by nature and started and sold many small businesses before Magnolia. Chip is a true cowboy at heart. He says he was made for hard labor and always preferred digging ditches to academic pursuits. Thoughts on Capital Gaines We thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It's a simple, happy read that you can accomplish in an afternoon. In the book, Chip shares (as he calls it) “smart things he's learned doing stupid stuff.” He elaborates on his upbringing and his college years and how it's helped him become a better business owner, husband, father, and human being. He has a sweet way of just loving everyone he meets and being fearless in all that he does. It made us love Chip every more! Favorite Quotes Pg. 13 “It was that day I knew I was going to be an entrepreneur. When an uncovered passion sits dormant inside you and then someone calls it out, all of a sudden that's all you can think about. It's like a wildfire being lit by a spark, and the aftermath is all-consuming” Pg. 56 “It's very important to take other people's opinions into consideration. It's crucial, even. You can't operate in a vacuum. But in the end, it's your life. It's your work. The conclusions you come to ultimately reflect you, and it's critical that it reflects you honestly. Learn to hear your inner voice, and then trust it.” Pg. 127 “We were created to live passionately - all of us, no matter our personality type or circumstance. The human heart was made to swell and jump and stir; that's a fact. It took me a while to figure out what makes my heart feel that way. But that is perhaps one of the most crucial things to know about ourselves.” Pg. 165 “So I'm urging you to find something worthwhile in this one invaluable life of yours. Find something to fight for. Something to live for.” Find Chip Gaines Online • Website • Instagram • Twitter Find The Creative Legacy Podcast Online • Website • Instagram • Facebook Find Sarah Online • Website • Instagram • Facebook Find Shaunae Online: • Website • Instagram • Facebook

For those of you that do not know, there is a couple named Chip and Joanna Gaines that have a popular TV show about flipping houses in Waco, TX. While on this trip I had no idea the Holy Spirit was going to show me some significant things about the culture of the Kingdom we are cultivating here in Carolina.
