Four years into his 12-year career chapter at Amazon, Hetu Patel was appointed Finance Director for Prime—a role he credits with opening his eyes to strategic finance. In the days ahead Patel would be handed a milestone assignment, where he worked on a groundbreaking framework attributing the total value of Prime membership to each bundled benefit: video, music, books, and fast shipping. Collaborating with economics and business teams, he quantified how each offering affected purchase behavior and membership renewals, “Patel tells us.” This data-driven approach ultimately informed billions in investment decisions, illustrating how finance could reshape strategy, boost decision-making speed, and deliver transformative impact.Patel's nearly 12-year tenure at Amazon exposed him to operations, retail category development, and even a general manager role, sharpening his analytical skills and broadening his perspective on enterprise-wide connectivity. “Improving the quality and speed of decision-making is the most important role of finance,” Patel tells us. This belief guided him into his subsequent position as CFO at Imperfect Foods, where he further honed board relations, fundraising, and M&A capabilities.Today, Patel channels these cross-functional experiences into his role as CFO of Thrive Market, combining rigorous long-term planning with a mission-driven focus on healthy, sustainable living. Drawing on lessons from Amazon's culture of data-centricity, Patel emphasizes strategic foresight and clear performance metrics to guide decision-making.

Misfits Market thinks it has found a unique way to tackle the difficult business that is online grocery. The company, which acquired Imperfect Foods over a year ago, has a pretty simple premise. It partners with farms and brands, and sells products that otherwise wouldn't hit major retail shelves. The name of the game for this type of business is scale, which is something COO Corey Farrell is constantly thinking about. But the ethos behind Misfits is sustainability. "We wanted to be able to offer the consumer more complete shopping experience, to help us ultimately reduce more food waste," Farrell said on this week's Modern Retail Podcast. The Imperfect acquisition has helped with growth. With the two companies combined, Misfits has a large presence on both coasts, and is growing both its first-party and third-party fulfillment. With this comes other areas of expansion -- namely, private label. Misfits does not bill itself as a competitor to Walmart. "Our assortment is limited," Farrell said. Right now, it sells around 700 items, compared to the over 20,000 most grocery stores contain. But, by working with the right partners and being able to create new private-label products that wouldn't otherwise be sold, Misfits is generating new revenue streams. Farrell pointed to a product Misfits sells that consists of broken pretzels that would otherwise be thrown away, which are dipped in chocolate. "That's an example of part of what we're trying to do with our private-label assortment that's very aligned with our mission," he said. Ultimately, the idea is to grow Misfits so that it's available in the entire country and continue to work with companies that want to offload otherwise unsellable products. "As we expand our assortment. We want to make the shopping experience more seamless for consumers," he said.
Launching an e-commerce startup in the grocery space is no small task. On today's episode Becca and Dom are joined by Abhi Ramesh, the CEO and founder of Misfits Market, a grocery startup that sells surplus and unwanted produce directly to consumers who don't mind funny-looking foods. They talk about how he started the company in his apartment handling every aspect from personally buying the unwanted produce from the farms, to storing the food, to packaging and shipping, all while running the website and trying to fundraise. He racked up six-figure credit card debt to fund the logistics-heavy startup before raising his first seed round — and that was just the first three months of the company. They also talked about:The systemic issues that have created a massive amount of produce wasteChanging consumer behavior when shopping for food and how COVID helped their businessThe lessons Ramesh learned after Misfits Markets acquired Imperfect Foods and what the next steps are for the companyFound posts every Friday. Nikhil Basu Trivedi is Co-Founder & General Partner at Footwork, an early-stage focused venture firm investing its first fund. In his venture career, he has invested in the early rounds of several companies that have exited or are currently valued at over $1B, including Athelas, Canva, ClassDojo, Color Health, Frame.io, Imperfect Foods, Lattice, and The Farmer's Dog. Prior to Footwork, Nikhil was a Managing Director at Shasta Ventures, on the investment team at Insight Partners, and on the founding team at Artsy. In Today's Episode with Nikhil Basu Trivedi We Discuss: 1. From Summer Intern to Founding a Firm: The 13 Year Journey: How did Nikhil first make his way into venture as an intern at Insight Partners in NYC? What does Nikhil know now that he wishes he had known on his first day in venture? Why does Nikhil advise all young VCs to "not look at their business card"? Why does title not matter in venture? Should founders meet with Juniors as well as GPs and more senior people? 2. Small Funds Outperform Large Funds: Why does Nikhil believe that small funds outperform large funds? Why is AUM the biggest bullshit metric in VC? How does Nikhil advise seed stage founders who have offers from seed firms for smaller rounds at lower valuations and are weighing them against larger rounds with higher valuations from multi-stage funds? Does Nikhil believe that platform value-added services really provide any value? 3. The Art of Investing: What has been Nikhil's biggest investing win? How has it changed his approach to investing? How does Nikhil prioritize between people, traction, and market? What is most important? What has been Nikhil's biggest investing miss? How has that changed his approach? Does Nikhil believe the great founders are immediately obvious? Why is market size the single question that keeps Nikhil up the most? 4. The Dysfunctions of Venture Capital: What are the single biggest areas of misalignment between GP and LP? What do many GPs see and know well that LPs should know and see more of? What are the biggest ways that decision-making breaks down in a venture fund? Why does Nikhil believe that so much of the investment in AI is going to go up in flames?

Prep Dish founder and Meal Prep expert Allison Schaaf shares 11 changes you can make at the grocery store to save money, without sacrificing quality. 1. Swap Packaged Snacks for Whole Foods / Larger Packages For example, swap apple slices for apple sauce pouches. Not only is this less expensive, it's also healthier and better for jaw development. 2. Switch Ground Meat for Beans I sometimes do half and half, or ¼ beans with ¾ ground meat to stretch the meal further. I've also added in mushrooms to bulk up a meal. 3. Buy Large Packages of Oats Instead of Small Packets There is a huge price difference here! 4. Swap for Cheaper Seafood If you're a Prep Dish subscriber and you see halibut on the menu, know that swapping out proteins is usually pretty easy. You could use any white fish in place of halibut. You can interchange trout and salmon as well. Just make sure to adjust the cooking times. Don't hesitate to ask the person behind the fish counter! 5. Substitute a Different Ground Meat If your freezer is stocked with ground beef, use that in place of bison or turkey! Again, make sure to adjust the cooking time as needed. 6. For Steak, Choose a Smaller Amount You can save money by buying a smaller amount of steak and bulking up the sides. You can also swap portobello mushrooms 7. Go Homemade for Salad Dressings This is SO easy, SO much healthier and SO much less expensive! Olive oil and balsamic vinegar is a super easy combo but we have a lot of great ones on our meal plans. 8. Buy Shrimp on Sale if Buying Frozen This applies to other items as well! Stock up when you see it on sale. 9. Purchase Ugly Fruits & Veggies There are a few companies now selling misshapen produce that would otherwise be tossed. I use Imperfect Foods. 10. Grow Your Own Herbs If you use our Prep Dish meal plans, you know we use a lot of fresh herbs. They provide a ton of flavor and elevate meals. Some are pretty easy to grow at home. Mint is pretty easy and rosemary is quite easy where I live. Ask around about your area! 11. Have a plan! This is the best way to save money at the grocery store. Our Prep Dish meal plans do this for you and make sure your meals actually use the perishable items on your grocery list so you're not left with half packages of produce. In the US, food waste is a pervasive problem, with an estimated 30 to 40 percent of the country's food supply going to waste each year. This amounts to around 133 billion pounds of food, worth an estimated $161 billion, being discarded annually. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about Full Harvest and other companies that sell surplus or imperfect produce that would otherwise be thrown away. By using Full Harvest, farmers can reduce their waste and increase their profits, while food and beverage companies can access high-quality produce at a lower cost. Its platform operates using digitization, with a user-friendly interface that streamlines the buying and selling process. Companies like Full Harvest, Imperfect Foods and Misfits Market are doing their part to reduce food waste and promote sustainability through digitization. The team wonders why these types of platforms are relatively new and whether food products that contain imperfect produce should require a label to inform consumers of the quality. Also in this episode, Sydney talks about United Nations' (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) food price index, which saw an increase in April after a year-long decline. The FAO food price index monitors the prices of the most traded food commodities worldwide and measures the average monthly change in international prices for a basket of food commodities, including meat, dairy products, cereals, oils and sugar. In April, the FAO food price index recorded an average of 127.2 points, compared to 126.5 points in March. The index is an essential barometer for food security and provides valuable insights into the economic and environmental factors that influence food prices. The index allows policymakers, food producers and consumers to track changes in food prices and plan accordingly. It is also used to monitor global food security. By tracking changes in food prices, policymakers, food producers and consumers can take steps to ensure food security and stability in the global food market.Read the full article here:Full Harvest is Leading the Charge Against Food Waste with DigitizationFAO Food Price Index Rises for the First Time in a YearFor more food and beverage industry content, visit the Xtalks Vitals homepage.Follow Us on Social Media Twitter: @XtalksFood Instagram: @Xtalks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Xtalks.Webinars/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/xtalks-webconferences YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/XtalksWebinars/featured

Try Acres: https://www.acres.co/The Ugly Company: https://www.theugly.company/The Business of Food Newsletter: https://jenniferbarney.substack.com/Today's episode features Ben Moore, founder of The Ugly Company, an upcycled dried fruit snack company. Ben is a 4th generation California farmer tackling the complex problem of food waste. Through Ugly Fruit, Ben is on a mission to achieve zero waste at farms by upcycling unmarketable fruit directly from farms to consumers. Ben had an epiphany while in his tractor plowing culled fruit. Ben reasoned that much of this fruit is perfectly good to eat and a shame being dumped. So, he did some research on ways to bring stone fruit to use as a value-added product. It's another way for consumers to minimize food waste – some of the listeners may have heard of grocery ecommerce companies like Misfit Market and Imperfect Foods where you can purchase slightly off-spec food. The two main problems with food waste is food insecurity – getting nutritious foods transported to those in need that is shelf stable and able to withstand varying storage conditions, and second, emissions problems – the EPA estimates food that is dumped contributes 170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. In order to solve the problem the way Ben envisions he is tackling the challenge of operational scale. We learn that stickers on fruit are an operational nightmare and that current dehydrator operators don't have the capacity or automation to make the business economically feasible. So Ben is building it himself. It's a single ingredient snack with no added sugars or preservatives which is a huge differentiator from a lot of other dried fruit snacks and trail mixes that contain sugar and other additives.

Hello and welcome back to Equity, a podcast about the business of startups, where we unpack the numbers and nuance behind the headlines.What.A.Week.Alex, Natasha and Mary Ann jumped on the mic, with Theresa on backup, to talk through the biggest headlines. For our Apple coverage, click here. For our YC coverage, click here. All that aside, here's what we got into on today's episode:Kim Kardashian surprised us all -- yet again -- with the news that she is co-founding a private equity firm. We also talked about how Userpilot raised $4.6 million to help SaaS companies offer a more personalized user experience and Varjo - an early mover in building XR headsets and software for enterprises - landing $40 million in new funding. We pivoted to riff on a couple of acquisitions in the grocery delivery space, both of which thought were pretty cool and made sense. Instacart acquired Rosie (gotta love the name) in an example of not putting all its eggs in one basket, and Misfit Markets announced it is buying Imperfect Foods.Next, we talked about a couple of venture firms -- Kapor Capital and Countdown Capital -- raising new, second funds. Notably, both firms are looking to back historically overlooked founders and industries, which we -- and their LPs -- are 100% here for.And lastly, we had a lively debate on AI and its impact on the creator economy -- discussing topics such as AI-generated porn and whether AI-driven art is truly art.If you are coming to Disrupt, use the code "EQUITY" to save 15%. Did you know that for the FDA to consider a product a jam, it needs to be 55% sugar content? When Anna Peck found this out, she thought it was wild and started experimenting in her kitchen. In 2019, Anna teamed up with co-founder Steve Ford to bring Chia Smash to market; a jam with 75% FRUIT content (and that's Upcycled Certified)! Full disclosure, Anna sent me some samples to try and my spouse is obsessed. And me? I've just been eating it the raspberry jam out of the jar with a spoon. Listen in as Anna shares the story behind Chia Smash, her time at Blue Apron, finding a co-founder and commercializing the recipe, launches with Thrive Market, Imperfect Foods, Misfit Markets, Whole Foods, and Sprouts, the rebrand process, beautiful recipe content, and more.

Most recently, Adam was the Chief Product and Growth Offer at Imperfect Foods, where Adam built a 40-person product and growth organization, responsible for 70% of overall company metrics and growing revenue by 400% in one year to $600M annually. Before Imperfect, Adam spent 4 years as VP of Product and Growth @ Patreon, driving the company pivot and rebrand and helping the company scale to $1BN GMV and $100M in revenue. Finally, before Patreon, Adam was the Head of Growth @ Lyft, Adam was the first growth and marketing employee hired, grew the team to 18 people, and reported directly to the founders. In Today's Episode with Adam You Will Learn: 1.) Entry into Growth: How Adam first made his way into the world of growth when "growth" did not exist as a function? What were Adam's biggest lessons from leading Lyft's growth team? How did that impact his mindset? What are some of Adam's biggest takeaways from his time at Patreon? What are some of the biggest mistakes he made at Patreon? 2.) The Basics: Growth 101: What and When: How does Adam define "growth" today? What is it? What is it not? When is the right time to hire your first growth hires? Should this first hire be a seasoned growth leader or a more junior growth rep? What characteristics and skill sets should this growth hire have? 3.) The Hiring Process: How should founders structure the hiring process for their first growth hire? What 3 questions should all founders ask in the hiring process for growth? How can founders use data and case studies to really test the skillsets of growth candidates? Why does Adam believe that the hiring process for growth and product is so broken? 4.) The Onboarding Process: What is the right way to structure the onboarding process for new growth hires? How should growth hires create cross-functional relationships and communication with the rest of the team? What has worked for Adam in the past? What has not? What are the signs that are new growth hire is not working? How long should they be given? What are the signs that are a new growth hire is working? What is the sign of "exceptional"? 5.) Adam Fishman: AMA: What growth decision has Adam made without data? How did it go? How does Adam define "viral loops"? What makes one better than another? Where do so many make mistakes with viral loops? Adam led the rebrand for Patreon, what is the secret to a successful rebrand? What are some of the most common pitfalls to avoid? With rising food costs, host Allison Schaaf knows that finding high quality, budget protein sources that won't break the bank is a real challenge. Prep Dish subscribers, make sure to check your subscriber newsletters every Friday for budget-friendly substitution ideas as well! Here are 5 Low Budget Protein Sources (Plus a Bonus!): Pork Chops - Make sure not to overcook them! Pork can be a little pink on the inside and still be safe to eat. According to the USDA, pork should be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 145 F (https://www.usda.gov/media/blog/2011/05/25/cooking-meat-check-new-recommended-temperatures) Ground Turkey - Use this anywhere you would use ground beef! Tacos, marinara, etc. If you make turkey burgers, use a recipe with some add-ins like feta cheese, etc., so they're not dry. Roasts - Roasts are budget-friendly, and also cut down on meal prep time! Since they make a lot of meat, it's easy to serve them twice in two different ways. Cod - Cod is more sustainable than a lot of other seafood and has a mild taste. It works well as an alternative to salmon and is a lot less expensive than something like sea bass or halibut. Make sure not to overcook! You can often find nice frozen cod. Beans & Lentils - Similar to a roast, you can make a big batch and use for multiple meals. You can also freeze extra. You can find a big bag of organic black beans at Costco. There is a huge variety of types of beans. Explore and find the ones your family likes the best! You can also use beans to stretch meals with meat. If you're making something with ground meat, add some beans to add extra servings. Bonus - Eggs! There's no reason to limit eggs to breakfast, think about serving for lunch or dinner for a great budget-friendly protein. Whether your oven is broken or you just don't want to turn it on because it's too hot outside, these 5 recipes are perfect! Tacos - Tacos are a natural choice for the stovetop and there are so many variations! Use ground beef, ground turkey, ground pork or a big roast for carnitas. Mix up the veggies - I recommend trying poblanos! Stew in the Instant Pot - Imperfect Foods has some really good lamb stew meat. I combine it with root veggies and water or broth in the Instant Pot, sometimes with crushed tomatoes. Chicken stew is also great in the Instant Pot. Oatmeal - Steel Cut oats are great in the Instant Pot, especially with canned pumpkin and raisins! Hamburgers - These are great served with baked potato fries or sweet potato fries but if you don't have an oven, you can serve with a salad or sauteed veggies. My all time favorite professor, Danny Warshay, from my first ever business class (Brown University's "The Entrepreneurial Process") comes on to talk about his NEW BOOK "See, Solve, Scale" (out today!). Danny shares a bit behind the See Solve Scale method, including miscellaneous anecdotes about businesses started in his class (such as Casper and Imperfect Foods), with plenty of inspiration for those of you who don't see yourself as entrepreneurs but still feel you might want to create something in this lifetime.
