John Kosar, chief market strategist at Asbury Research, says the stock market "doesn't know exactly what to do here," with the economy clicking but sector bets being hard to make because it's hard to know which areas to favor until the re4sults of the election are in. Still, Kosar is generally bullish, noting that he has been risk-on since early August and that he will feel even more strongly if technology stocks can push the Nasdaq through previous highs for several days, clearing the way for more upside from tech stocks. Then, we finish up coverage from FinCon '24, chatting with Marty Steffens, the SABEW Endowed Chair in Business Journalism at the University of Missouri, about the tension between "journalism" and "content creation," and what it means for individual investors who are looking at those different work products. Plus, Bindu and Prahlad Pant — the parents of FinCon rock star Paula Pant of the Afford Anything Podcast — give their first-ever podcast interview, discussing how their daughter came up with her attitudes about money and spending, before Paula herself talks about money attitudes for consumers now.

We've been working on this investigation all year, with our partners at Scripps News and the Baltimore Banner. With those partners, we've dug up some surprising (and possibly uplifting) news about lawsuits in three states – Maryland, New York and Wisconsin — and what that news might mean for the rest of the country. This is part two of a two-part series. In part one, we examined the phenomenon of hospitals suing patients in bulk – sometimes hundred or thousands at a time – over unpaid bills. We learned that in many cases, those patients are struggling financially, and that the lawsuits aren't very lucrative for hospitals anyway. So why did they happen in the first place? As one former collections industry insider told us, those decisions are “philosophically based.” In this episode — before getting to those surprising/hopeful findings — we try to understand that “philosophy,” perhaps best described as: business-as-usual. We speak with a former hospital billing executive and a representative from the third-party collections industry. This series is produced in partnership with the McGraw Center for Business Journalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York.… and supported by the Fund for Investigative Journalism. For years, we've been hearing about hospitals suing patients over unpaid medical bills – sometimes even in bulk, by the hundreds or thousands at a time. Many of the patients getting sued are already facing financial hardship, or like one couple we interviewed, already in bankruptcy. Judgments against patients in these suits can be life changing. But according to experts, these lawsuits don't recoup a ton of lost revenue for hospitals. So why do they happen? And what if hospitals stopped doing it completely? In this episode, we talk to a former sales rep for a medical-debt collections agency — who now steers hospitals away from efforts to collect money, via lawsuits or other means, from folks who just don't have it.He tells hospitals: This is better for your bottom line. Stay tuned for part two, coming in two weeks. To say that Peter Bhatia is a successful newspaper editor would be akin to stating that Tom Brady was a good quarterback. As Bhatia reminisces during this vodcast interview with E&P Publisher Mike Blinder, when he left Stanford in 1975 to begin his journalism career, the first operation he worked at was using "hot type” typesetting to lay out the daily edition. Since those early days, Bhatia has managed newsrooms that collectively have won 10 Pulitzer Prizes. He spent time in academia as the Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism director at Arizona State University's Cronkite School of Journalism. Bhatia was president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and received the 2020 "Benjamin Bradlee Editor of the Year Award" from the National Press Foundation. He is the first journalist of South Asian descent to lead a major daily newspaper in the U.S. And was featured on the cover of E&P Magazine as our 2008 "Editor of the Year." For the last seven years, Bhatia was part of the Gannett/ USA Today company, serving as vice president and editor for the Cincinnati Enquirer from 2015-2017. He then worked for the Detroit Free Press until January 2023, when he decided to be one of eight to take a voluntary severance departure, sacrificing his job to save others from being laid off the next month. Some thought now that Peter would take advantage of a long and prosperous career, perhaps watching the rest of us struggle to swim in the turbulent waters of today's news publishing industry from his front porch rocking chair. However, that was not to be the case. A few months after he departed from Gannett, Bhatia announced that he was launching a nonprofit, free-access local news website in the nation's fourth largest metropolitan area, entitled Houston Landing. Stating its core mission is to be “an independent, nonpartisan news organization devoted to public service journalism that seeks to strengthen democracy and improve the lives of all Houstonians one story at a time," the Landing was started with a 7 million dollar seed investment from three Houston philanthropies – the Houston Endowment, Arnold Ventures and Kinder Foundation. Bhatia states that the Landing was born out of a study spearheaded by the American Journalism Project that found many Houstonians do not feel they have access to a trusted source for deeply reported stories that impact their daily lives. As of the time of this interview, they have used those funds to hire over 20 journalists led by Editor-in-Chief Mizanur Rahman, who spent 15 years in the same post at the Houston Chronicle. On June 7th, 2023, Bhatia announced the Houston Landing's launch in an editorial where he states: “We formally launch today, without the legacy that traditional journalistic outlets face based on long years of practices and viewpoints. (We will not have an “editorial page," nor will we endorse political candidates.) We are unburdened with debates about the past. Ours is a clean slate, bolstered by the nonprofit, nonpartisan, no-paywall principles we embrace, and by carving an independent way to make Houston a better place, but to do so through truthful, thoroughly reported, and fair journalism.” In this episode of E&P reports, we go one-on-one with Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom leader Peter Bhatia, who recently exited his post as editor-in-chief of Gannett's Detroit Free Press to lead a new free-access, nonprofit, Texas-based digital local news startup, Houston Landing. We ask Bhatia why he believes this new project lacking paywalls, editorials and local sports can become a sustainable business in today's news ecosystem. We also ask his thoughts on managing newsrooms for over seven years at major market Gannett newspapers and where he sees the news media industry today and the future for its survival.

The discussion arises from the publication of The Future of Business Journalism and Why It Matters for Wall Street and Main Street by Chris Roush. As the top journalist and now CEO of Fortune Media — publisher of Fortune magazine, Fortune.com, and an increasing array of live Fortune global conferences — Alan Murray is one of the most influential business journalists in the country. In his capacity as the head of Fortune, Alan has the opportunity to keep company with many of the world's most prominent and influential people, including presidents, heads of state, legendary CEOs, titans of Wall Street, and even the Pope. Alan is the author of a bold, newly released book, Tomorrow's Capitalist: My Search for the Soul of Business. In the book, Alan encapsulates the wisdom of his coterie, mixed with a full serving of his own savvy, to create a vision for a new, 21st-century breed of business owners and leaders. Alan dubs them Capitalists 2.0. Some of Alan's ideas are surprisingly radical — or, if not radical — certainly a break from the traditions of Corporate America and the deeply-rooted Milton Friedman philosophy that “There is one and only one social responsibility of business–to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits.” This week, Alan sits for an exclusive interview with host and award-winning author Dean Rotbart to explain how tomorrow's CEOs can do a better job than their predecessors for their employees, communities, and investors. [Note: Alan's journalism career spans more than four decades, including serving as deputy managing editor, executive editor online, Washington bureau chief, and a columnist for The Wall Street Journal. He is the recipient of a Business News Visionary Award, nominated by his peers and recognized for his transformative contributions to the business journalism profession. The Business News Visionary Awards are made possible by the support of Monday Morning Radio and The Dilenschneider Group. This episode features an interview with Warren Shoulberg, award-winning journalist and consultant for the retailing and home furnishings industries. He is a regular contributor to The Robin Report, Forbes.com, The Business of Home, and his own blog, Stupidbusiness.com.On this episode, Warren gives us his take on a wide range of contemporary retail issues, including technological innovation and supply-chain backlog, and shares why he dislikes the terms “brick-and-mortar,” “omnichannel,” and “upholstery.”3 Takeaways:Get out there. Talk to your customers, go into your stores to ensure they are executing on a local level, and keep your nose to the grindstone. On the supply side, technology is not going to save the day in industries that are labor-intensive. Retailers must understand where their competitive levers lie and the distinctiveness of their businesses. While some retail buzzwords get low marks from Warren, here is one that doesn't: “retail-as-campus.” The immersive, experiential concept is presenting a different way to engage shoppers. Multiple structures offer retail, dining, and even lodging in an experience that cannot be replicated online.Key Quotes:“That's why I like the retail business: because you can just see with your own eyes what's going on, and they can't fool you.”“Any time I run into an independent retailer who says, ‘I can't do E-commerce,' I say, ‘You're crazy, because you're willing to write off 30% of the potential market.'”“You've got to go out and see the stores. If you don't - if you're just sitting on your computer or your phone all day - you're going to miss a lot of stuff.”--This podcast is presented by Dell Technologies and Intel. Together they help you realize digital transformation across retail by driving IT innovation to better engage with today's connected consumer. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, philanthropists and New Orleans education reformers saw an unprecedented chance to completely restructure a failing school system. As a result, New Orleans has become the only city in the United States where charter schools have completely replaced public schools. It's the most dramatic test case for the claims of the self-styled, traditional school choice movement—a nationwide push, led by a slew of major philanthropists and by current secretary of education Betsy DeVos, to privatize education and treat schooling as a business like any other. As Andrea Gabor documents in the November issue of Harper's Magazine, the experiment is not producing the desired results. The skewed incentives of the portfolio model, which stakes school survival largely on standardized test scores, have caused many schools to treat students like prisoners while deliberately discouraging or underserving children with special needs. In districts where charters and public schools coexist, competitive pressure and poor funding can make public schools dysfunctional “dumping grounds” for harder-to-teach children, victims of a system that values profitability over community needs. In this episode, web editor Violet Lucca speaks with Andrea Gabor—author of After the Education Wars and the Bloomberg Chair of Business Journalism at Baruch College of the City University of New York—about the reality of school choice, the mind-set of Big Philanthropy, and the often-neglected tipping point at which charter schools begin harming nearby public schools. Read Gabor's article here: https://harpers.org/archive/2019/11/the-k-12-takeover-charter-schools-new-orleans/ This episode was produced by Violet Lucca and Andrew Blevins.

Listen NowNine in 10 prescriptions are today filled using a generic drug saving Americans tens of billions annually. A significant amount of generic drugs, along with active ingredients in all drugs, are manufactured overseas. However, how safely or to what quality standards are these ingredients and generics produced? Bottle of Lies, published in May, tells the story of appalling practices foreign generic manufacturers use to produce these drugs at the most minimal cost. The work moreover provides a detailed account of Ranbaxy, the former India-based generic manufacturer that after eight years of investigation was fined a then record amount,$500 million, for significant fraud. The work questions or brings to serious doubt the FDA's ability to adequately inspect overseas generic manufacturers ensuring these drugs are safe for consumption in the US or around the world. Listeners may recall I interviewed coauthor Paul Weinberg in September 2017 concerning his related work, Blood On Their Hands, How Greedy Companies, Inept Bureaucracy and Bad Science Killed Thousands of Hemophiliacs and Rosemary Gibson this past December concerning her related, China Rx, Exposing the Risk of America's Dependence on China for Medicine. During this 37 minute interview. Ms. Eban provides an overview of Ranbaxy's manufacturing practices revealed by former employee and whistleblower, Dinesh Thakur. She explains the mindset, termed "Jugaad," used in India to produce generics. She discusses the adequacy of the 2013 US settlement with Ranbaxy , the role the Japanese firm, Daiichi Sankyo, a major Ranbaxy stakeholder, the FDA's ability to adequately inspect Ranbaxy and other generic manufacturers around the world, e.g., Cipla and Mylan, recent and future related Congressional action, how poor or inadequate manufacturing practices complicate remedying the drug shortage problem and what precautions consumers or patients can take before consuming generic drugs. Katherine Eban, an investigative journalist, is a Fortune magazine contributor and Andrew Carnegie fellow. Her articles on pharmaceutical counterfeiting, gun trafficking, and coercive interrogations by the CIA, have won international attention and numerous awards. She has also written for Vanity Fair, The New York Times, Self, The Nation, the New York Observer and other publications. Her work has been featured on 60 Minutes, Nightline, NPR, and other national news programs. She lectures frequently on the topic of pharmaceutical integrity. Her first book, Dangerous Doses: a True Story of Cops, Counterfeiters and the Contamination of America's Drug Supply, was named one of the Best Books of 2005 by Kirkus Reviews and was a Barnes&Noble Discover Great New Writers pick. Her account of reporting on 9/11 was anthologized in At Ground Zero: 25 Stories From Young Reporters Who Were There. Her work has also been awarded grants from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Fund for Investigative Journalism, the Alicia Patterson Foundation and the McGraw Center for Business Journalism at CUNY's Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism. Educated at Brown University and Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. Information on Bottle of Lies is at: https://www.harpercollins.com/9780062338785/bottle-of-lies/. Consolidation cutbacks and competition from the web -- these are the headlines grabbing the attention of business journalists around the world. Concerns about the quality of reporting and information have risen steadily as the industry has undergone dramatic changes. How has global expansion affected the standards of news organizations? What impact have blogs and ”citizen journalism” had on the industry? And what role does investigative journalism play in an age of around-the-clock cable news updates and shrinking budgets? To answer these and other questions Knowledge at Wharton spoke with four news professionals from the U.S. and abroad who attended the 2007 Wharton Seminars for Business Journalists.
