Taco Trim Shop: A 65-Year Upholstery Legacy with Brittany EdwardsOn the Small Town Big Business podcast, cohost Allison Hassler joins the hosts to interview Brittany Edwards of Taco Trim Shop, an automotive upholstery business founded in 1960 by her father, Roger “Taco” Loss. Brittany explains the name comes from “Taylor and Cook,” the prior owners, and shares the shop's moves from Benton to Christopher and then Herrin in 1980. After her brother became ill, Brittany and her husband Daniel moved from Chicago and assumed ownership within a month; Daniel manages installations while Brittany handles customers and operations. They serve customers across Southern Illinois and nearby states, do automotive and commercial upholstery (including medical projects), and are currently not taking couches or most boats. Brittany discusses upgrading equipment, using SBDC workshops and grants for bookkeeping/legal help, building a website and social media presence, using ChatGPT, launching Taco Trim Media to document classic-car stories, and hosting a Herrin car show that drew about 150 cars.00:00 Podcast Introductions00:58 What Taco Trim Shop Is01:18 Origin Story Taylor Cook03:01 Family Legacy Today04:16 Sudden Succession Plan06:06 Learning As New Owner07:32 Service Area And Website08:55 Beyond Cars Commercial Work11:26 What They Do Not Do12:59 Materials OEM Seat Covers14:58 Equipment And Craft Process15:47 Roles Hiring And Care17:50 Apprenticeship And Experience18:52 Husband Joins the Craft20:48 Teamwork in a Tiny Shop21:13 Bookkeeping Grants and Taxes22:35 Marketing and Social Growth24:32 Networking Prayer and AI27:06 Taco Trim Media Stories29:06 Car Show Surprise Success31:12 Favorite Builds and Services32:51 Dad Legacy and Motivation35:01 How to Contact Taco TrimRecorded at EThOs Small Business Incubator and Co-working Spaces in Marion, Illinois.https://members.ethosmarion.org/ SUBSCRIBE TO THE PODCASTOur guest: https://www.tacotrimshop.com/
Can upholstery innovate without toxicity? Or are we stuck between outdated regulations, industry habits and the fear of change? This week Vicky and Ray sit down with Delyth Fetherston-Dilke, one of the leading voices challenging the UK furniture industry to think differently about flame retardants, materials, sustainability and the future of upholstery. But this conversation goes far beyond “toxic foam”.We get into the real questions:Are current fire regulations still fit for purpose? Why is innovation in furniture materials so difficult? Who really influences what upholsterers are able to buy and use? And can the industry evolve without losing safety, craftsmanship or trust?Delyth shares her experiences working across campaigning, regulation and industry conversations, alongside her belief that innovation, transparency and collaboration are essential if upholstery is going to move forward. This is an honest conversation about materials, manufacturing, health, responsibility and the complicated reality of change within traditional industries.FR ConsultationCheck out that amazing article in TheTimeshttps://www.thetimes.com/life-style/property-home/article/sofas-toxic-chemicals-cancer-9tz66br9c“Dark Waters” Movie: https://tv.apple.com/gb/movie/dark-waters/umc.cmc.3topp2g12va4hj1i9v50f13g7Fidra CharityThe Environmental charity supporting sustainability & preventing pollution: https://fidra.org.uk Our profound thanks go out to all our SponsorsMartins Upholstery SuppliesBeA Group Follow Sit on This! for monthly chats from the workbench, stories from inside the upholstery world, with makers, fixers, and fabric lovers.

Mandy Szigethy discovered upholstery while completing her Theater Technology degree at Indiana University and decided to forsake the stage in favor of the workshop. She has had the unique opportunity to work in both furniture manufacturing at Beachley Furniture and now custom upholstery as the owner of Rose City Upholstery in Portland. She has received training in both modern materials and traditional methods through Upholstery Education and is now able to apply time tested techniques to all of her projects. Her love of learning lead to her to co-ownership of Upholstery Education in 2025 where she hopes to foster the same enthusiasm in others. Her passion for revitalizing and repurposing home furnishings has led to an in depth--if unintentional--study of older and newer furniture, and the potential of any antique store or curbside find. Marta Powers is the owner of MartaPOW LLC, a custom workroom in Richmond, Virginia, offering upholstery and soft goods services nationally To The Trade. Her past career as a project manager for architecture and design firms has informed her business processes and broadened her network of professionals across the hospitality and interior design sectors. Marta's early training in tailoring, pattern drafting, clothing design, and fabrication skills led to her creation of a business serving designers, helping them to achieve their and their clients' vision. A co-owner of Upholstery Education LLC, Marta and her partners bring educators from the UK and France to the U.S., offering courses in traditional upholstery methods, materials, and related interior furnishing trades. Marta has served on the boards of the National Upholstery Association and the Virginia chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (as an Industry Partner). She is also a member of IFDA Richmond, the SeatWeavers Guild, and the NUA's Education Committee. Justin Dazey is the owner of Foxglove Artisan and Castillo's Custom Upholstery on Queen Anne Hill in Seattle, Washington. Justin has a BA in Interior Design and over 30 years of experience in the antiques, interiors, and furniture world. In 2014, Justin took up sweeping floors in the shop of a third-generation Upholstery family. He brought his design skills and furniture history knowledge to the role of Studio Manager, eventually becoming their lead upholsterer. In 2024, Justin took up the mantle as his mentor retired, becoming the owner, designer, and upholsterer of the Seattle Studio. Most recently, Justin partnered with Marta Powers and Mandy Szigethy to acquire Upholstery Education, offering the very best in traditional upholstery training available in the United States. Justin is a collector at heart. He collects history, chairs, and curiosities. He firmly believes every piece has a story to tell and loves bringing old items back to life through patient and accurate restoration. Sharing his insights and seeking education to honor the traditions of craft and furniture is one of his true passions. Links and Resources; Upholstery Edcuation

The salient focus of our discourse today centers on the transformative impact of evolving consumer behaviors within the realm of home furnishings, particularly as individuals increasingly allocate their time to domestic environments. Recent research elucidates a pronounced trend toward multifunctional furniture, revealing that consumers now prioritize comfort and practicality over mere aesthetic appeal. This shift necessitates a recalibration of strategies for retailers and manufacturers, compelling them to emphasize designs that cater to both work and relaxation, thus aligning with contemporary lifestyle demands. Furthermore, the podcast delves into the pressing issue of return policies within the furniture sector, highlighting the shift toward return fees as merchants adapt to rising logistical costs, a trend that may significantly alter consumer purchasing behavior. In conclusion, we examine the broader implications of these developments, underscoring the necessity for agility and responsiveness in an increasingly competitive market landscape.Takeaways: The contemporary consumer landscape indicates a marked inclination towards multifunctional furniture, reflecting an evolution in living space utilization. As home environments evolve, the demand for comfort in furniture design supersedes aesthetic appeal, reshaping retail strategies. Recent industry reports reveal a significant shift, with approximately 70% of merchants now imposing return fees, a stark departure from previous norms. The closures of established companies such as Our House Designs and Leathercraft underscore the intense competition and challenges facing small manufacturers. Millenol's robust performance amidst economic fluctuations illustrates the importance of brand adaptability and consumer market alignment for success. The furniture industry is currently navigating a complex interplay of consumer behavior, retailer policies, and manufacturing realities that influence procurement strategies.

In 1999 Jes and Wes were on a quest to work for themselves and have more control over their own time. That's when they created Crown Upholstery. After 25 years they have definitely worked, but they have yet to gain much control over their time. Jesica is the 5th generation in her family to be enticed by the upholstery lifestyle. Growing up in her grandparents shop, in Glendale Arizona, she witnessed first hand the freedoms upholstery had to offer as well as the hard work one has to put in to be successful in this craft. Wes was raised in Maryland and had never known upholstery to be anything other than something you did to the interiors of cars. The sirens of upholstery began to sing to him on a visit to Jesica's grandparents house. He saw their home based shop and the countless processes that go into this craft and quickly fell in love. Having a background in auto mechanics he was already primed for the problem solving journey that upholstery provides. He took a few classes taught by Jesica's grandfather, Frank, and then began his apprenticeship with him after Frank saw the enthusiasm and attention to detail Wes had. Within a few years of walking into an upholstery shop for the first time, Wes was starting his own. It began in a tiny one car garage that shared space with laundry machines, holiday decorations and lawn equipment but it did the job. Jesica had experience in accounting and she's much better at organization and management of things so that made the decision of who would be boss really easy. They moved across country a couple of times searching for a place to settle down and eventually landed in east Tennessee. In the 17 years living and working in Knoxville they have established a reputation for quality upholstery and excellent customer service. For the majority of their upholstery career they have been a home based business. In 2018 they purchased their first commercial space. A 1920's grocery store with an apartment above. They were officially a business based home. Within a few years, and after hiring another upholsterer Crown Upholstery was ready for more growth. Jesica found and purchased another building in the same neighborhood. This allowed them to bring on another full-time upholsterer. Jesica was now coordinating the schedules of 3 upholsterers along with everything else that goes into running a business. They still live above the old upholstery shop but it is now a Hair salon that Jesica manages as well. There's a reason she won Knoxville's Women owned business of the year 2024. Even when they aren't working together they still enjoy spending time together. Whether it's camping, sifting through junks shops or riding bikes. They are rarely seen very far apart. Crown Upholstery is on Instagram and Facebook SBA - Small Business Association Kim's Upholstery
