TODAY'S GUEST Dr. Marilyn Paul is the author of It's Hard to Make a Difference When You Can't Find Your Keys and An Oasis in Time: How a Day of Rest Can Save Your Life. She is the co-founder of Bridgeway Partners, a consulting firm dedicated to using systems thinking approaches to multi-sectoral and complex organizational challenges. We spoke at the end of August 2022, and I was excited to talk to Marilyn since we've been introduced by her husband, former guest of the podcast, David Peter Stroh, and my discovery of her delightful book, An Oasis in Time. Avid listeners of the podcast would know that I am a designer by profession, but I've studied religious studies in my master's degree. I did this out of curiosity for the ways religions use design to create supportive frameworks for our lives, whether they are philosophical, social, institutional, or personal. I've been especially fascinated by the way that religions design and structure time itself through ritual and community to produce valuable experiences. Meditation, pilgrimage, and the Jewish Sabbath are all examples of wonderful ways of structuring time. In fact, it was the Sabbath that opened the door to Buddhist meditation and spirituality in my own life, and Marilyn is the only person I know who wrote about it enthusiastically, pragmatically, and from an accessible secular perspective. Her book is not just meant for Jewish people. It's a passionate defense and advocacy for the value of a weekly day of rest. A day intentionally and deeply separated from the mundane concerns of work, money, and achievement. And it's also a practical guide for how to set such a day up and embark on a journey of making it richer, more beautiful, more meaningful, and more social over time. The conversation was delightful and thought-provoking. EPISODE SUMMARY In this conversation we talk about: What it was like to grow up with two therapist parents. Her early interest in climate change and how it shaped her choices. Suffering from what she calls chronic disorganization, and how she learned to tame chaos and to be more organized. The spirituality of organizing. The role of meditation in her journey. How she discovered the Sabbath and recognized its importance in her life. What the Sabbath has to do with gratefulness. How to remember who we are as human beings. And many other topics. We live in a hectic, modern society, but I found that having a day of rest helps me stay sane and stable throughout it all, and helps me stay connected to my own values and to the present, even in the most stressful times. This conversation was a chance to enrich this day of rest. What stayed with me is Marilyn's call to make it richer, mark it more decisively, and enjoy great food and great company. It's a lifelong process, but I'm learning. This conversation is one a dozen or so weekly conversations we already have lined up for you with thinkers, designers, makers, authors, and activists who are working to change our world for the better. In this episode, I interview author, speaker, coach, and consultant Marilyn Paul. Marilyn is the author of two books: It's Hard to Make a Difference When You Can't Find Your Keys: The Seven Step Path to Becoming Truly Organized and An Oasis in Time: How a Day of Rest Can Save Your Life. We cover these two topics, getting organized and resting, both with an eye on how this can help in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous world. In the first portion of the interview, Marilyn shares her own story of discovering how her disorganization was impacting others around her, and how this realization led her to making big changes in her life and habits. She asks us to consider what it is costing us to be disorganized, and she talks about what it costs organizations to constantly rely on the "hero" to swoop in at the end and save the day. Marilyn shares practical advice, including how to get started if you are struggling to take the first step. She encourages us to really connect with why we want to get more organized, our vision of what life would look like if were to be more organized, and how our current reality is holding us back. We then shift into her more recent work, the value of getting rest. She again shares her own story of realizing how exhaustion and burnout were normal to her, that is until she attended a Shabbat dinner at a friend's home and started to see unexpected benefits in the rest of her life. She began to build more "Oasis Time" into her life, and has now made it a weekly practice with her family. Marilyn encourages us to revel in this oasis time, spending time doing the things we "never seem to have time to get to" in our busy lives. We talk about the benefits of rest, two of which include feeling more joy and experiencing more awe in our lives. She also talks about how the lack of rest is impacting how leaders lead and how organizations make decisions in complex situations. She again offers practical advice on how to get started on the road to more rest, encouraging us to start with one hour/week and then building from there. We live in a culture where busyness is mistaken for success. If we’re not moving, we’re not achieving, some seem to think. Our addiction to speed isn’t just hurting our productivity, but our happiness and relationships, too. Marilyn Paul tackles this topic in her new book, An Oasis in Time. Drawing on the historically religious definition of the Sabbath, Paul takes Skrhak along her journey to carve out time for actual rest and relearning to love her life just as it is.
Marilyn Paul is an explorer of time management and well-being. She helps people find their path to balancing the inner, intuitive spaciousness of oasis time with the pleasures and efficacy of getting the right things done. Today Dr. Dan welcomes Dr. Marilyn Paul, an author, parent and well being expert. Marilyn‘s passion is the basis of her new book for parents and families An Oasis in Time: How a Day of Rest Can Save Your Life (Rodale, August 2017) – in it she shows us all how a day of rest can transform and save lives. We live in hurried times. We value busy-ness, juggling too much, and trying to reach daily pie-in-the-sky goals. We are connected 24/7 and we are passing these habits on to our children. Dr. Paul encourages us to make small changes to make big life changes - spending meaningful time in nature or attending a family dinner and taking a day of rest is a gift we can give ourselves and our children. Listeners today will learn that there are practical strategies for creating their own modern-day Sabbath or day of rest, whatever their religious beliefs. Scheduled rest time is life-affirming and creates an oasis. Parents can integrate "oasis time" into their lives by examining their habits and finding and scheduling “pause time” – purposefully. There is power in STOPPING and making it sacred. And you can do this with your family – stretching, deep breathing, looking at a tree, turning off all screens, playing a board game, going on a family walk. By seeking a way to pause and refresh ourselves we will recover from exhaustion and at the same time teach our children this crucial life lesson that should be a priority. Dr. Dan and Dr. Paul talk about “giving up achievement” on your day of rest. Dr. Dan goes on to explain how being present with yourself and your loved ones (and avoid the need To Do) is a paradigm shifting way of thinking and living. The Parent Footprint moment Marilyn describes is eye-opening: Marilyn considered herself a parent who limited her own cell phone usage. But when Marilyn’s son called her a phone addict, Marilyn learned she was wrong and started to simply STOP using her device when she is with her son. Nothing is more important than being with her child and so she puts the phone away now. With a Ph.D. from the Yale School of Management and an M.B.A. from Cornell, Dr. Paul takes a creative, integrative approach that blends practical skills training with inner work. As a senior consultant with Bridgeway Partners, an organizational consulting group based in the San Francisco Bay Area, she has worked with a wide range of companies, non-profits, religious organizations and educational institutions. In addition to her consulting work, she has taught on the faculties of Yale University School of Medicine, the Hebrew University School of Public Health and Colby College in Waterville Maine. In her new book, An Oasis in Time: How a Day of Rest Can Save Your Life (Rodale, 2017), http://marilynpaul.com/an-oasis-in-time-book/ Dr. Paul shows that a solution for the modern sense of relentless pressure can be found in the ancient tradition of the Sabbath. Among the many profound benefits of taking a day off each week are renewed perspective, enhanced creativity and a refreshed outlook on life. Drawing on Sabbath history, contemporary research and her own personal experience, Dr. Paul shows readers how to design a weekly time off, carve out the time from busy schedule and most importantly, change their mindset to have the pleasure of regularly slowing down every week. Marilyn is also the author of It's Hard to Make a Difference When You Can't Find Your Keys: The Seven-Step Path to Becoming Truly Organized and has been featured in USA Today, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, NPR, the Discovery Channel and Yoga Journal. Dr. Paul lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and son. For more information, please visit www.marilynpaul.com.
